Archos 70b Cobalt cross flashing? - Gen8, Gen9, Gen10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So Archos' habit of reusing model numbers is a pain, but I've just got two Archos 70b Cobalt for $45 each new. I've given my parents it to give me for Christmas (they're always asking for ideas), anyway so this is the link:
http://www.archos.com/gb/products/tablets/cobalt/archos_70bcobalt/specs.html?#menu
Now, doing research they also do a Archos 70c Cobalt, and to me the specs look the same, but the tablets look slightly different cosmetically, and I think there could be things like wifi differences:

Basically the 70b runs 4.2 JB, the 70c runs 4.4 KK, would a cross flash work? If it doesn't will it be recoverable. I can't find firmware for either on the Archos site though.
Thanks.

Archos Gen9 Hardware Modding

Hi folks. Firstly, could some kind mod please create an Archos Gen9 category, and move this thread into it? You will then be beyond wonderful...
I've been looking at potential tablets for awhile, and am attracted to the Archos Gen9 devices coming out for their potential modability. I'm keen for feedback on this, and to start a discussion thread. Please post for your ideas and comments.
What interests me most:
1. They run an omap4 chipset, which is well supported (with graphics acceleration) under Ubuntu's arm port. Also, Texa Instruments, the makers of the omap chips, have a great linux community around them.
2. They have 2 x 1.5 ghz processors, along with a myriad of other goodies in their chips
3. Both the 80 and 101 models have options for a hard drive. The hard drive interests me less than the space put aside to put one in, and the sata conector that goes along with it. My hopes are it's relatively easy to open up the tablet, then switch out the drive for a fast ssd. Toshiba has a 7mm ssd drive coming out that works with a sata connection. Otherwise, a 5mm 1.8inch mini-sata drive might work, if it was packed out.
4. The last couple versions of the Archos system seem to have a developers version with it, so (hopefully) one could replace Armstrong with Ubuntu's arm port with minimal hassle. Regardless, a modified Ubuntu image should work fine with this device.
Anyone keen on this? I'd like to know your thoughts on hardware modability, and alternative software that can load on these devices. I'm looking at replacing my netbook with a tablet, and seems these upcoming Archos devices might be just the ticket. Lastly, does anyone know if the 16gb solid state drives shipping with the lighter models are likely to be soldiered onto the board, or is it possible to swap them with something else, like the ssd drives included in the eepc's and acer netbooks. Cheers.
Its way to early to create a Gen9 Forum

Well, one processor, but 2x 1.5GHz cores.
Apparently the G9 101 flash versions will only have a 1GHz chip (probably the OMAP 4430), as well as the G9 80 8GB model. The other models will be clocked at 1.5GHz, running the OMAP 4460.
Code:
80 G9 8GB: 1.0GHz 299$
80 G9 16GB: 1.5GHz 329$
80 G9 250GB: 1.5GHz 369$
101 G9 8GB: 1.0GHz 369$
101 G9 16GB: 1.0GHz 399$
101 G9 250GB: 1.5GHz 469$

Not really any reason for Archos to not include an SDE like they have been for the last two generations.

They aren't solid state drives. Theyr'e flash memory chips, and yes they are soldered on the board. They will likely operate the exact same way as last generation's chip, where they hosted the OS and the app storage, so they won't be replacable.
Also, it isn't way too early to start a G9 section. Most major hyped phones that come out get a section a month or so before they come out. Around next month would be a good time to start a G9 section (or start it now and have the mod for it make an announcement, and then only make a "General" section until they actually come out). People will continually post about the G9 devices here in the G8 section, because this is the only Archos section on XDA. If there were a G9 section, we could keep things separated.
Thanks for that Harfainx. Of course, that makes more sense about the flash memory chips. I still wonder how modable the rest of ths flash based units are, but think I'll be going for the hard drive versions, and pulling them apart. I'm still stoked Archos is putting in a sata hard disk to begin with, hers should be heaps more options for hacking it.
And yes, if this is the only place for people to post on XDA about the gen9 devices, this is where they will go. The fact that people are already posting means thaf we should have an area setup for gen9. Or at least have and archos area, with gen 8 and 9 under it. Cheers.

[Q] Archos 70b Internet Tablet - Honeycomb?

I picked up the newly released Archos 70b Internet Tablet recently. Archos announced this 'enhanced' version comes with many upgrades over the standard 70 model including Honeycomb. While it does have the better screen and more RAM its stuck on Android 2.2.1???
Was this a mistake by Archos or should this have the later software as advertised?
Anyone else got one yet?

If you head over to Forums.Archosfans.com and look at A70 section, you will find quite a lot of info and speculation about the new A70b - but basically expect honeycomb 'anyday'

[Q] Archos 101 IT - gen8 or gen9?

Hi, I've been thinking about buying a budget Android tablet for a while, but mixed reviews of things like the AndyPad put me off. I now have the opportunity to pick up a used Archos 101 Internet Tablet for about £100 (so inside budget territory) but I can't figure out whether this is a gen8 or gen9 device. I think it's a gen8 as it originally came with FroYo and the screen resolution is only 1024x600, but could just do with someone who knows more about them confirming that, I'm wondering what the chances are of a newer OS coming out for this device.
Even if it's the older gen8 version, is it worth a go for £100 anyway and just put a third-party ROM onto it to get the features I want? Cheers!

this would be the Gen8 tablet, there is very little chance of a newer OS coming to it officially but there are a few projects including getting gingerbread running and also a few people are trying to get ICS to boot
Thanks for confirming that, I've been reading up this morning and it seems like while they were a good purchase a while back, I might be better off with something slightly better specced (more RAM) and with a bit more support. Now tempted by an Advent Vega which is also for sale locally, a little bit more money but better specifications and they already have a working (very well, from what I can gather) Honeycomb port, with ICS well on the way. Thanks for your response though
I think is better buy the g9 .. it's new, use honeycomb and not froyo like the g8 and... Archos have say that upgrade the g9 to ics!

[Q] Archos 70b internet tablet (G8)-honeycomb?

i have the archos 70 b internet tablet and its running 2.2 froyo which isnt bad but when i walk into to places like carphone warhouse and see the Gen9 up to date version of mine with 3.2 honeycomb working it really winds me up because archos havent made an update for my one to run 3.2 and it looks so much better than 2.2 which is really starting to bore me now, is there anyway of downloading the Gen9 70b IT firmware from the archos site and putting it on the older Gen8 70b? i see archos have put 'WARNING: This Firmware is ONLY compatible with the ARCHOS 70b internet tablet running Honeycomb (3.2).
It is NOT COMPATIBLE with the Froyo (2.2) versions of the ARCHOS 70b internet tablet.' is that just bull crap to make you go out and buy the newer one or can you actually do it?
No, this is not bull crap, it will brick definitely your tablet if you do. Trust me, I did before the warning was there. So don't

Archos 10.1 tablet cobalt 101, rk3168

Hello!
I had an question about the older cobalt 101 tablet with an rk3168 in it.
Looks like this one what updated by an 1,5ghz version.
I have an older tablet what is special 2 me because i got it from someone special.
I was looking if i could maybe find a working rom for it, because its an emprire electronix rk3168 tablet and the spec of the archos cobalt 101 rk3168 looks the same.
But mine is running 4.2.2, so i don't know if the last firmware is newer as this one..Or maybe there is a custom rom for the archos cobalt 101 rk3168?
I would like to try to install an newer android version what fits the archos cobalt 101 on my empire tablet rk3168. Maybe it works, specs really look the same.
I have all the specs here so if anyone is interested to look of its fits my tablet let me know!
I also backup mine rom just in case,
Thanks!
Erik
