First impressions and questions - Themer General Discussion

Hi,
I have played with Themer and widgets last few hours, and it looks very nice. I have looked through the introduction videos, and they were informative, but there is always some information missing, and here is what I could not find:
How to lock widgets without right click?
When we unlock the widgets for editing, we need to lock them back. Every tutorial that I looked does this using right click on screen, but what if there is no place on screen available to right click (widget occupies to whole screen)?. I guess we could add one screen temporarily, lock the widgets, and remove the "dummy" screen, but I guess there should be some quicker method?
How to dock particular widget to appear on all screens?
I would like one widget to appear on all screens, something like a Dock on the stock Android. How to mark widget as docked (locked) on all screens?
How to preview a custom (exported) theme?
In the video tutorials it is said to put an image with the same name to thumbs folder (I noticed that it must be png also, not jpeg). However, this only shows the screenshot in the thumbnail preview of exported themes. What about when we select a particular theme, which opens a screen with Delete Apply choices? This preview is still blank screen, which means that it does not use the image from the thumbs. The same behavior is seen in the video tutorials.
How to know if there is an empty widget on screen?
For example, lets say that I have dropped a widget on the screen accidentally, and I did not place any element in it. This widget would be transparent by default. How can I see those widgets, so I can remove them?
Thanks.

Hi Goran,
So sorry for taking an incredibly long time to reply, I'm on a semi-vacation in Thailand at the moment and getting access to internet isn't easy. I'll try help as best I can.
1. Thanks for pointing this one out! The option to do this via the app drawer was removed in the last update, so I'll speak to the team about adding it in again. The only other way would be to enable the Themer notification bar, which has a Themer icon that brings up new themes. From here you can tap the back button to go into the Advanced Settings and then into Desktop.
2. This feature has been requested before, however it will take us a while to add it into Themer, as the resources required are quite vast to say the least. Hopefully in the new year we will have more time to focus on features like this. Right now the team is more focused on fixing bugs and improving the performance.
3. Another requested feature. We still want to improve the front end as much as possible before moving onto the back end. Trust me though we haven't forgotten about the designer side of Themer.
4. I've never heard of this feature before, but it sounds like a good one to have. I think because many users focus on adding widgets that instantly show information, it hasn't been as a priority. I'll speak to the team and see what they think.
I hope this has answered your questions. If you have any more just ask, I have a stable connection now and will be able to reply within the day.

Help Build up Max-Sense

As many are aware the new Max-Sense Manilla Mod for windows devices isint perfect, but there are many things that do give it a nice feel. I thought i would open this thread to help in posting bugs/things that could be better or more intuitive.
Let start guys, if there are some helpful comments in this thread ill be happy to add them to the OP as suggestions. Please post what you would like changed or made better, and keep flaming out of the question.
Personally What I'd like to see added in future updates:
Internet link widgets for the homepages
The ability to have more than one blank widget
Live Facebook widget, kinda like the sense tab
Sync Calender with Facebook events
Would like to see a picture Slideshow widget..
i'd like to see the memory and battery widgets have assignable actions, ex when you touch the memory widget it opens ark switch, taskmanager, clean ram, or a program of your choice, and battery would open the power settings, etc.
i would like to see more favorite people widgets
i would like the option to change the max sense taskbar from just minimized, maximized, or none to the windows default taskbar as well
i would like the backup/restore script that beegee_tokyo created implemented into the menu under max sense settings
i would like to be able to press the whole widget for your notifications to take you to the sense tab not just the icon.
it would be nice if the left soft key in the home screens was easily assignable, some people like have the start menu assigned or an app of choice.
i wish the back hard key did somthing, even if it just sent you to the homescreens instead of actually backing up.
i'm not trying to be negative in any way, i absolutely love max sense and all of the work everyone has put into it, but these are all features i think everyone would appreciate
lastly just somthing that came to mind would be a notes widget
I have not tried it. I am still waiting for the author to get back to me about being able to use it my roms. As soon as i am able to use i will let you know. Thanks

+1 for these, especially the "press the whole widget, not just the icon" one. I though my installation was broken until I figured out that you have to push the icon, not the number (eg. missed calls)
My personal feature request would be the ability to insert a table of quicklinks into one of the three main home screens, rather than only on the home button flick left action.
i.e. To fill-in the empty left screen of my theme here:

Thanks for all Max and BIGnAdAd's work!

I agree...I'd love to have my pictures at my main screen and be able to scroll like favorite contacts.....
Okay i have used every ROm on this planet and so far MAX is the most intuitive yet. Here are a few issues i have come across...
1- when returning from a tab based application there is a pause or slight hesitation where the notification bar return to back to the max sense appearance
2- all max sense ROMS are having the small MMS issues and for some reason the quick fix works and then doesn't and reverts back to the original settings
3-MAJOR battery eating - although i did notice when removing all the tmobile crap and the facebook tab that it was a HUGE success on saving batter...Now after one day of minimal use and testing often i was able to have 80% battery !!
4- I think that the Favs. widget could be smarter...quick sms mms or email buttons should or could be applied
thats all for now im sure I will have more ideas soon....thanks devs for making my windows phone make the iphone look retarded ....Nothing better then to see my buddy who just got the iphone 4 and then is caught staring at my HD2...And i know exactly what he's thinking...what phone is that? Phone envy is a sin i say....haha
well.. when we put a new widget, for example want to put a music player widget.. i put it but I want to choose a specific widget (of music player) to put.
So I want to have the option for me to choose what widget I want to put, and not put one itself that maybe i dont like it

[Q] What is the theme builder application?

How does a person create a theme and then use it? I'd like to have very specific things on my theme but other than adding to an existing theme, i can't seem to take away from an existing theme, how do I create a new one from scratch?
I know they say watch the vid but if you are like me you need to see it in writing,it makes more sense to me that way.Anyway the easiest way is to grab a theme and change it around/edit,get a feel for the program then create your own by changing wallpapers, icons, weather etc.A lot of themes now won't let you edit them I have found, however download any of mine and edit away they are all editable,as are a few more posted here but names don't spring to mind, none in my opinion are any better or worse than each other they just have their own little attributes that makes them unique in their own way.So go on and play around m8,it will be fun.

Thanks, I cannot stand those youtube videos that "show" you how to do things. I find them tedious and unusable. I'd rather just get some instructions, an application and let me do it. Yet, so many seem to post "youtube instructions" i write this stuff for a living and have never found a video more useful than written instructions. However, that's my bias.
I'll go check out some of yours.
I agree with your assessment that NONE of the themes I've downloaded have been editable. I don't want to ADD more widgets and icons to a theme. I just want to start with a blank canvas and let me do it.
Yet, if all these themes exist, HOW were they created? I'm really not going to watch a youtube video. There has to be a building application somewhere. Not re-engineer something already there.
One question, when you say "download mine" where do I find yours. None of the ones I've seen through the application say who created them.
mine and others are in the screenshots and themes forum beneath the general discussion.I agree fully with the video and much prefer to read it as I find it more followable, but again I suppose that is my bias too.You can start almost fresh, grab a theme as posted earlier, then delete everything,if the theme uses everything widget this is simple to do,just press screen and choose remove, then change the wallpaper by selecting your own then simply add you own widgets etc via the inbuilt everything widget (although this isn't as stable as it could be) or download widgets from playstore etc then add them, hope this helps apologies if I seem to waffle on.

Hi sanjsrik,
I'm the one who made the YouTube tutorial videos, so I apologize if they weren't that informative. Those were created in the beginning just to give people a basic understanding of what Themer was about.
Alldroid is correct in saying that starting with a fresh blank theme is the best, then just seeing what works and what doesn't. My advice would be learn more about Zooper Widget, as a lot of the newer themes use it, and it's brilliant. That's all Themer is essentially, a wallpaper, some widgets, and maybe some icons if you're feeling brave. We do recommend making the grid size quite large, in order to make the widget resizing easier. you might also notice that the new themes include incredibly detailed icons, these are in fact Zooper fonts, so as mentioned play around with the Zooper widgets found in the new themes.
If you need help/ideas feel free to ask, I'm always here to help!

It isn't that the video isn't informative,it probably is but some people including myself prefer to read it via a text file or maybe a pdf file

Marco,
I would definitely go for it... though I am more of a "hands on" student and for learning I need to hear the stuff (that's how I learned all the stuff during college - my wife reading the material and me laying down and just listening - damn, she was so furious when I got the same grades as she did... ;o]]]), the text might help you gain more audience among those "give-me-a-manual-and-shut-up" types.
You have created a superb product for the tinkerers so a step further in the direction of a superb customer/user support would be a definitive nod in the right direction.
I personally would like more short video tutorials on specific features, how they work, what is their purpose and the mechanics (Yeah, you guessed it, I am not that familiar with design and graphics;o]) and maybe a tut on the 'codes' for custom formats of zooper widget.
well and maybe few more videos with theme designers like the one you guys did with GeriArts would also be inspiring... ;o]]]
another definate yes here too thanks, would make it a more better product in my opinion.

I promise I am NOT complaining. I promise I am NOT criticizing. I am just asking the question, WHAT is Themer?
from everything I understand, it's not a true "application", it's a wallpaper that then people can add widgets that "do" things.
if this is the case, HOW are these widgets "locked" where they can't be changed in a lot of the wallpapers I've downloaded.
THAT is my only question.
Oh, and how come there's not a "builder" application for Themer?

No worries we weren't offended by your comments, we're just trying to make everyone's theming experience as easy possible.
Themer is a launcher. Just like TouchWiz, Nova, Apex, ssLauncher, etc. It's a link between the hardware and software, you could think of it as the body/shell of a car. The car can have a different shell, and with Themer, it's shell can be customized in seconds.
Calling it a wallpaper with widgets doesn't really do it justice, as a launcher incorporates your app drawer as well, and maybe some more features arriving soon.
One thing to remember is that Themer, once stripped to its core, it a launcher, just like the rest. By that we mean you're able to edit/add/remove widgets, change wallpapers, change the icons (icon pack support arriving soon), etc. To unlock widgets, hold down on the homescreen - Advanced - Unlock Widgets. Repeat the process to lock them, or alternatively you can go into the main Themer settings - Advanced - Desktop - enable Lock Desktop Widgets.
Whenever the widgets/icons are unlocked, this can be called the "builder" mode, as you can add/remove/edit widgets and icons.
Hope this helps!

Thank you for the constructive email.
I think the biggest confusion anyone has with your "application" is that it doesn't seem like an application. It really does sound like a wallpaper with widgets. For example:
* Is there the ability to add groups for grouping together like kinds of applications?
* Can I add my own icons for applications?
Think GoLauncher or some other such "launcher" application that exists.

1. With Themer, you can add in Smart Category folders. For example the Games Category, when you install a new game, it will show up in this category and then whichever theme has a games folder, this new game will automatically appear. This saves a lot of time, but you can also manually add in your own categories or manually add in your own apps to a category.
2. Icon pack support is still limited. If you have icons on the homescreen, these can be edited manually. Some icon packs are supported, but you can also set them to other images in your gallery.

YES! I watched many of the videos and I'm still very much confused. I have specific ideas for what I want, and although I can figure some things out on my own by trial and error, reinventing the wheel is both time-intensive and tiresome.
Also, I am glad to hear that icon pack support is on the list. Although my plans include heavy use off the app drawer, I'd like to have the icons in there be pleasing to my eye as well as the ones on my home screen.
It's a great product, one that I've already suggested to several friends. I just am more demanding than the "average bear".

most icon packs by default don't work with themer, but there is a way round this although you will need to manually change the icons you want to use.
Download apk extractor from Playstore
download the icon packs you want to your device
using apk extractor extract the apk of the icon pack you downloaded, this file will be stored on your device main storage in the apk extrat folder.
Attach your device to your laptop etc, then drag the extracted apk icon pack to it
rename the icon.apk and change the apk extension to zip
open with your favourite zip program
then simply extract the icon file images

[Q] Unable to place shortcuts in Themer dock

Hello, newb here to XDA, Themer, and Android in general. Hopefully someone will be so kind as to be able to help with my issue. I've searched the forums to no avail.
So I'm trying to build a theme within Themer and, for the most part, all is going well. But I just cannot figure out how to get the dock to accept icons/shortcuts/Themer actions so I can put the phone, internet, app drawer, sms, and camera icons there. 'Show Dock' is checked in the Advanced Settings, but I'm unable to actually get anything to stick in the dock area... any icons dragged to that area just bounce out. I attached a screen shot illustrating the problem.
Am I missing something obvious? Or maybe the Themer Beta app hasn't had this functionality implemented yet? I've seen working docks in Themer themes ('Twilight' for example), but maybe those designers used other tools to build the dock and then imported it into Themer?
I'm using a Moto G with Android 4.4.2 and Themer 1.47. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi defektiv1, welcome to the community.
How did you create this theme? Was it created from an earlier theme? If so, which one? There might be a widget blocking the apps.
If you use the Twilight theme, then remove the icons, are you then able to insert your own?
As long as the "Show Dock" option is enabled, a dock should be present and allow you to place icons within it.

I believe it was the 'Rainy Day' theme I started with as a base. I think there were only two widgets in that one and I deleted them both, and then turned on 'Show Dock' in the settings as that particular theme doesn't use one.
Experimenting with the 'Twilight' theme, I tried moving the icons off the dock into the main area and then back to the dock. The icons for some reason ended up smaller than they were in the default setup, and also aligned a bit higher, but they did still function as they should, staying in the dock area while swiping through the pages. Attached an image showing the smaller icons. I also tried replacing the icons that came with the theme with a random app from the app drawer, and it worked fine, except again the odd sizing and alignment issue.
The dock area is definitely there in my theme; when the 'Show Dock' option is unchecked, that area is just part of the normal desktop area of each page, and moving things there is no problem, but of course things don't stay there when moving between pages. When 'Show Dock' is enabled, it won't allow me to drop anything there... any icons dragged there from any of the main screen areas just automatically bounce back to where they were before the attempted move.
Went ahead and attached a copy of the zip in case it might be helpful.
Thanks a lot for the help, this could be really fun if I can just get this issue sorted.

More experimenting: When I first started building this theme, I had set the desktop grid size to 8x16 on the recommendation of the article "How to correctly lay out and anchor your themes" on the themerapp.com site. Thinking that might be related to this issue, I tried setting the grid to 5x8, what I assume is the default for my phone, and now the dock area is working as it should. So it seems changing the grid size has something to do with this issue. The smaller size and higher positioning of icons only happens when initially dragging them onto the dock from the main screen area. Once I selected a new Themer action to put on a home screen, the icons on the dock correctly re-sized and re-positioned automatically. Attached an image sequence to illustrate. Hope this helps find the bugs so I can use other grid sizes with the dock.
thank you: Good:

Once I passed your errors onto the developers, they told me that they were aware of both issues and that a fix would arrive soon. The latest update (now 1.49) should have been the update to fix these problems If you run into any other bugs, please let us know!

OK, just tried with the update and the dock is working now with an 8x16 grid. Cool, thanks!

[Q] Themes with folders?

I got Themer today, and I really love how a lot of them look, but I ended up sticking with my plain stock because I like to have most things on the home screen in folders. I tried making a folder, but it didn't work.
Are there any themes that incorporate folders? Did I just do it incorrectly or are they not an option? I realize you can go into apps, and then use the categories, but I'd much rather have them on my home screen.
Plus, if I have an app, like my flashlight, that I really need on my home screen for accessibility, it's kind of obnoxious against the pretty, cohesive theme, and sticks out. If there was a folder I could stick it in on the home screen that matched the rest of the theme, it would look better. Does that make sense? I might just be rambling now.
It's a really cool app though, I like that you can do these things without rooting, I didn't realize that was possible. (My noob is showing... )

Hi Lumosx,
With Themer, there are multiple ways of adding folders.
First, you can drag and drop apps from the app drawer onto one you've already added. To do this:
1. Drag an app onto the app drawer that you'd like in your folder.
2. Then drag another app next to it; a popup may appear asking you to unlock widgets.
3. Select Yes and open the Desktop menu and deselect Lock homescreeen Icons.
You're now able to drag icons into one another, creating folders accordingly.
Alternatively, you can use Smart Category folders. These are the categories you see in the app drawer, and adding one of these does come with some advantages. To add one:
1. Long press on the homescreen > Advanced > Desktop > Unlock homescreen Icons.
2. Long press on the homescreen > Smart Categories > choose your preferred category.
3. Tap the icon > Select the overflow icon (3-dot icon) > Manage, in order to manually add/remove apps.
Now this category will be saved for every theme that you use.
To change the look of a folder (with both methods), long press on the icon > Edit > then select an icon either from selected packs or a simple image. Let us know if you need to find an image/icon to match your theme.
Hope this helps!

I got it to work, thank you very much! I'm very happy with it now.
One more question: The only issue I have now is that there's one particular widget that tells me it's already added when I try to put it on the screen, but it's not actually there. Do you know what the problem could be? It came with the phone (Walkmate) if that matters.

What's your device and the widget called? We want to see if we can replicate this issue.
Also does it happen with all themes or one specific theme?
Lastly, is there room for the widget? What may happen is that a widget might take up the whole screen, not allowing for any widgets to be added. Deleting all the widgets on the page and try to add this widget will help us figure out what's causing the problem.
I have a Galaxy S3, the widget is Walkmate. It should fit, it's small and I have at least half the screen free. I tried when the screen was blank as well. The theme is Frosted Glass. I tried using a random theme as well and it still didn't work (it was Hi-Tech).
It's not a huge issue or anything.

I will revise that step, it's unclear, sorry
If you load the LT_settings in Nova and exit the program, you already can tap: resize or tap to start (middle of the screen) and load the LT_Home_screen from the SD Card option in Zooper.
Please let me know if you got it setup

Got it working now - was using Zooper Free and not Zooper Pro. thx
I'm struggling with sizing the Home Screen widget as Zooper widget sizes are limited. Nor does the Zooper scaling help.
Pls advise whether I'm doing cowrrect procedure.
1. Open a new widget
2. Select Zooper widget
3. select size (tried 1x1; 4 x 4; 4x2; 6x2 )
4. Then tap to resize or start
5. select sd card/LT Home Screen
6. Exit
Where do I go wrong?

All working . Thx
Hey Mokum,
Very nice theme!
I'd like to use it on my 10inch Asus Transformer, but I don't get the homescreen so crispy as you do.
Is that because of the dpi? Or the resolution?
Please reply!

I looked it up for you and it's '1280 x 800 pixels (~149 ppi pixel density)'

Separate widgets?
Hello,
fantastic job, even the other system info widget on the other thread, and very accurate explanation about how to configure everything.
From my point of view I see only one problem: such widgets are perfect for landscape but practically unusable for portrait, and having a Tab S 8.4 the last one is my most used mode.
I don't know if I'm asking too much or you already have tought about... Maybe you like my idea and you'll decide to do for yourself first
1) What if you make many different widgets instead of a big one? In such way you would give maximum modularity to them. It would be possible to use in portrait too, people could change order, etc.
The same for the info widget on the other thread.
2) What if you add customization using ZWUtilities even with these widgets like Meteo, Music, News, Calendar etc.?
3) What if you make at least "blank" 4x1, 4x2, 4x4 widgets, where "blank" means pastel coloured header with 3 stripes on the left upper corner, and white or dark background below... Luckily always with ZWUtilities customization to have a coherent theme.
To be sincere, I'm already trying to extrapolate elements by the big widget you already made, simply I personally miss the time to go fast on this job, so if you like the idea and you want to extend by yourself your own work I'll be happy too
However, really congratulations again for what you already made! And sorry for my english, isn't my primary language and I hope my ideas was enough clear.
