[Q] Huge Lag when Browser App is running. - Ubuntu Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I am using Ubuntu Touch (15.04) Build 57 on my nexus 4.
Im using Ubuntu touch since a couple of weeks now but there is one thing that is really annoying. There is an immense lag when swiping from the welcome screen. Sometimes it takes 3-4 seconds until something happens. I noticed that this is most of the time when the standard browser app is running.... is this a known problem?
I tested with many apps running (Camera, Contacts, Phoneapp, Email App Dekko, Message App, System Settings, etc....) except the browser - the phone is fast and the experience is nice, but as soon as the browser is runnning, the phone is barely usable.... and really slow. The browser itself is okay when it is running... Very Strange...
Does anyone has suggestions what i can do? Is there an alternative browser i can test?
Thanks a ton for helping!

Hi,
There's no other browser which you can use (except one which hasn't seen any updates for a couple of months). That's indeed an interesting observation. Would you mind creating a bug report here? https://bugs.launchpad.net/webbrowser-app

Hi! thanks - yes i reported the bug - hopefully someone will help me solve this - it's nearly unusable like this...

@zwenson69 Thank you for the bug report.

PSA - Chrome out of beta

FYI - I'm sure you saw that Chrome is now out of beta (check the market for updates), and if you were a bit leery of it not working on the TP with 120 DPI, rest assured it now works flawlessly! I updated it a bit ago and it no longer force closes if you're running a non-stock DPI setting.
Been waiting for this update for a while!
here he is giving too much lag and slow scroll.
you have the same problem?
I did notice some lag and occasional freezing, but i can live with it to get the sync capability back and the "Request desktop site" option - man does that come in handy.

You can get that option in the stock browser...

Still not the smoothest browser. But Chrome will be my main one because I like the syncing features.

the problem here is that it is very slow not to mention that sometimes it makes the screen blink
I'd really like to use chrome as standard but unfortunately does not due to lag

Why do web browsers always crash on this tablet?

Ever since Honeycomb, the absolute biggest problem I've had with this tablet is the browser. It doesn't freaking stay open. No matter what browser I use, no matter if I'm running Honeycomb, ICS or Jellybean, the browser always crashes. And it's not a typical FC either; It just closes right back to Launcher.
I've been hearing that it's caused by some null pointer exception in JavaScript; But you mean to tell me between Android 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 4.0 - 4.0.4 and 4.1, 4.1.1, that this issue STILL isn't resolved? Not to mention, it only happens on tablets (Tegra 2 issue? Xoom has the same issue).
For me, it most notably happens when I'm browsing a Twitter page. In the past minute alone, I've had browser crash on my SIX times trying to load a page on Twitter. Let's make that 7 now.
So what the hell really causes this, and why won't it go away? My Sensation and myTouch 4G can browse just fine, and this temporary Galaxy S III works perfectly too, so what's with the tablet?
EDIT: Disabled JavaScript and set plugins to ondemand. Same damn result.
I've used the stock browser, Dolphin, Chrome, and Skyfire and none of them have ever crashed on me. Ever. Sounds like there is either something defective about your device perhaps your internet connection. A factory reset might help, as might going into applications, finding the Google framework and clearing data. Do the same for your browsers as well.
That's funny, I've noticed just the same thing. Browsers work terribly on this tablet.
With me, they only do crash sometimes – a lot more than on my HTC phone, though. But using browsers is a real pain, as they all feel kinda buggy, and I don't think it's their fault, since they all show the same "bugs". They're all kinda laggy. I've updated to ICS today and I was crying in emotion for being able to finally download Chrome, as it's the most stable one I've ever used in my phone, but I was disappointed when I noticed it too felt quite laggy. I'd rather go home and turn my Mac on than to struggle with web browsing on this tablet, honestly. I've tried many browsers –*stock, Dolphin, Boat, that other one with green icon, and also Skyfire or something.
If anyone has a better thing, or a solution, or anything, I bet there are many desperate people that would die to hear it.
(I know I sound more dramatic than I should, but let's face it, web browsing sucks in this device.)
I've never had any problem web browsing on my Tab. None. I'm not rooted, maybe that's why, or maybe it has to do with the sites you visit. Dunno.
On my tab with HC 3.2, the stock browser would also just disappear to the home screen, but not all that often.
I flashed to ICS, and the stock browser got a bit quirky. The address bar would no longer hide when I scrolled down
on a web page. Would stutter as if it was trying to hide but wouldn't.
Installed Dolphin and it worked fine.
I went back to HC 3.2 (had some other issues besides the browser) and so far the stock browser is working fine.

Dolphin does the same thing though, just a lot less frequently. Motorola Xoom users in a thread from a year ago reported this same problem (in a filled up 14 page thread), and several of users report the same exact issue. I'm gonna poll some more Tegra 2 sections and see if they suffer from the same thing but it looks like this is just another issue with this ****ty SoC, like the portrait mode lag.

Come on dude, I'd have to be rooted to be running Jellybean. And as everyone else has shown, it does seem to vary by website. Full pages on twitter ALWAYS crash, (they work once in a blue moon). Other times browser crashes when browser feels like it hasn't crashed in a while. I could get through a day perfectly, then bam, crash.
I'm not a dude.
I've never had a problem with any of the browsers I've tried, I think maybe you have a faulty tablet.
I to have the same problems. The browser would even close and reopen with no webpages there.

Yes Google.ca. The browser just shut down without a force close notice and opens blank. Plus it becomes non responsive, on pages that have a lot of javascript.

That specifically happens the second time. On the first crash, I'd relaunch and it would reload my pages, but 99/100 times it would crash seconds afterward. Upon opening it again, i get one tab with the Google homepage.

Sounds like JavaScript is the culprit, but it still crashed for me even after I disabled JavaScript
I think it's all about memory management, I cant tell about HC 'cause I barely used it, but JB is still very experimental.

I'm biased because I've never had any problems with my browser crashing? Whatever. I also never "went crazy" over anything. All you do is complain and complain. Why not just get an iPad and move on?
I have tried several browsers also, and for me I really only have problems with chrome freezing (not force closing). It seems to be random, but happens more frequently when opening new tabs. However, the stock browser on the same sites seems to work every time. My guess is that it may be due to timeouts on the network connection or possibly memory related. And, it seems to be random... I may go a day without a freeze, then have two back to back freezes. Oh tegra2, why don't you behave?
Hey guys,
It's been almost a week since I flashed the stock ICS and installed Chrome. So far so good, no complaints. I'm really relieved, as I was almost giving up. Give it a try

Chrome is the way to go. The ability to create an account and sync all relevant browser data to your devices via the cloud - why hasn't anyone thought of this before? So obvious and useful.
I also strongly recommend trying out Boat Browser, which is highly underrated. Smoother and smarter layout than Dolphin and the best alternative to Chrome, IMO.

Chrome acts really weird on JB. I'm still running pershoot's 8/4 build but I'll be updating and trying out Chrome again. Last time I tried it I would always get a white page while switching tabs, and scrolling was odd. Browser does a much better job but Chrome has too much nice functionality lol

I doubt it's memory relate, it happens a lot with 1 tab open, and with a full Gig of RAM, browsing should be painless when it comes to memory management, not to mention, but Android's memory management scheme is the most beautiful thing I've seen. Tabs and apps actually know how to stay open, and Android knows what to close. Works a lot better than any tablet I've used, even better than crapple's iPad.

[Q] Contacts opening is slow

hello,
i have searched on web about this subject but no accurate solution found. my problem is that when i hit contacts, it opens after 3-4 secs. then it opens instantly. after browsing web or facebook or something different, then it waits 3-4 secs again to enter contacts. it happens at all roms i have tried (turkbey, agabey, omega, anonorom, md, crdroid, cyanogenmod, viking). stock rom has the same lag. the situation continues when i hit message or dailer. it is not related with the animation speed i guess. older samsung mobiles have faster response (ace, wonder or sii). thisi is annoying.
some lags occur while browsing facebook (not too much but sensing).
anyone know how to get rid of this problem?
best regards
Dialer lag on Cyanogenmod...............No. Stock Contacts app being slow has been pointed out numerous times. It is being killed from ram to make room for other apps. Either use Exdialer which can be kept in memory, Purchase JKAY Deluxe settings, or accept the slowness.

The problem is because the Contact and Phone aps are getting killed off from the memory after sometime.
1) use a third party app like exDilaler.
2) Install jKay's framework and white list Contacts and Dialer. This will lock the app in memory.
Just download exdialer from play store.
I think U have installed some task manager/killer which kills the running apps after some time.
And due to which there is a delay in contacts opening.
Add this app not to kill in settings !
Thread moved to proper forum.

thanks for answers,
first of all; i do not use any app killer programs. i can understand that the phone is killing app to open room on ram for other apps. what about galaxy s2? i tried opening contacts on this device many times and it is quite fast in every time. if i saw same problem on lower models i would accept that lag for contacts. but i do not understand how s2 could kept it in ram and why s3 could not. and it is laggy when browsing contacts. not too much but you can see it.

[Q] What's wrong with my Nexus 5/Android

Hi Everyone,
I need help on my nexus 5/Android 4.4.2. I want to be able to troubleshoot and figure out why my nexus 5 is acting strange -at least the OS part of it.
A BIT OF HISTORY: I just recently purchased this phone in the US through a friend.
THE SITUATION/ISSUES:
- When I go to the app drawer, sometimes the wall paper in the background turns black and comes back just after I tap a an app
- When I use the chrome browser and surf the web some something, it reloads the page I am viewing without me triggering reload. It's kinda annoying that it reloads pages i am viewing. Quiet a few times chrome crashed.
- When I use youtube and tap the voice command to search for videos, it accepts the command but it doesn't load the videos I wanted to search.
- Sometimes, when I tap the home button it kinda reloads the home screen.
I thought that it might be just the OS and maybe a glitch or something. I tried factory reset (vanilla android) a few times but it is the same. I have tried cyanogenmod 11 on it and it is still the same issues.
I am a newbie. This is my first nexus android. I have used HTC desire HD for a month and it doesn't have this problem.
If I am unclear with describing my situation/problem please let me know.

Since it persists in different roms looks like a hardware issue.. More of an ram issue is what I can make of.. Take a logcat and send it my way and I'll look at it.
The last 2 errors are pretty common. The last one is because your launcher is not locked on ram.

Thanks for the reply MasterAwesome.
I have just downloaded aLogCat to log issues on my phone. Once I've gathered enough activity/issues, I'll send it your way.
Are issues likes these common in Nexus 5's? I've reverted back to my Stock Android.
YouTube issue: I didn't update the YouTube app and the voice search feature on it worked fine - at least for now that seems to be the fix for it.
Chrome Browser reloading issue: I haven't found a fix but Chrome Beta seem to work fine. Still reloads but not quite as often. I think this reloading issue isn't just contained in Chrome Browser.
Skype Video Call issue: I forgot to mention that I used Skype for a video call once and every 1-3 minutes the video drops (but not the call) I would have to press back to go out of the call without hanging up and get back to it. That seem to reload the video again.

They are common? I have an N5 and have a few friends with them and hang out in the Nexus 5 forums too. It's definitely not that common. I've flashed dozens of roms on my phone and have not experienced any of these problems besides Chrome reloading a few times, though even that only happened a few times. I also use Nova Launcher and have never seen it reload (besides waiting for a new theme to load) or flake out once.

Lag experience

Is anyone else experiencing lag? Even with 3gb of ram I can still feel the lag. I'm rooted with stump root and have the nova launcher installed but when opening up youtube or yahoo mail it takes a good 3 seconds before the app opens up. When opening up other apps it lags about half a second and the same goes for closing apps.
Am I the only one with this issue?
Pretty sure that's not lag it's normal and also depends on your internet connection
I'm experiencing some lag as well coming from a rooted galaxy note 2 with custom ROM & kernel. I'm afraid there aren't many options until developers start working on this wonderful new toy of ours.

So because the app takes a while to open means lag isn't the issue? It takes about 2 seconds for the torch to start also after tapping on the widget which seems weird to me.

As far as the torch goes, that's app related and not the phone. Some of those apps just take longer to launch, especially those torch apps. Saw this on my moto x as well. Try another torch app.
