Reads as they will release it as a (mini) tablet... I guess so we dont look like twats with a small sun-shade held to our heads as we make calls

That's gotta be the stupidest thing ever! The whole point is having a bridging device between 5" smartphone and 7" tablet.
FCC seem to have an objection about this device. Especially since its output is only SAR.42 which is one of the lower ratings for even a smartphone.
What does it meen? That I have to buy another pfhone to make calls????
It's a different product derived from the Z Ultra. I guess Sony realized that they are going to to have a problem selling it to Americans as a smartphone when the mainstream size is less than 6".

No. They are making a "Z Ultra" without the cellular part so it'll only be a pure 6.4" tablet, and not a smartphone.

Oh, i agree
There are already a number of different variants of the Ultra (3G, 4G/LTE, etc)
So what's so surprising about Sony releasing a cheaper version that has no phone capabilities, but which they will just sell as a small tablet?

This drop makes it a REALLY tempting purchase... I have a 32GB White Nexus 5 that I could maybe sell for it. I've always liked the “phablet" form-factor and the two have near identical specs. It would just be at the expense of getting updates first... Thanks for the heads-up OP!
B&H is also running a promotion on SBH52 bluetooth headset at ~$64 which will go very well with the Z Ultra :good:

This is awesome. Just purchased one. I’ve been eyeing this forever but finally decided to make the switch. Coming from an iPhone 5 this is going to be a hell of a change lol.
EDIT: Slightly confused with the ROMS selection though. I see the GPe basically has nothing. Can I flash regular Z ultra rome on the GPe?
This is kind of making me hesitant on the purchase now.
was thinking of getting the ZU, but now with the price drop, the ZU GPe is similar price to an official set here in my country. FYI, Google does not sell their Nexus nor GPe devices in my country

I'm afraid you can't do that. It's probably not that hard to make it work, but no devs have looked at it yet, so we don't know.

I currently rock an LG G3 and while I love the screen and phone model, I can't stand the software at all, it is laggy and horrible, I've compared it to a Z Ultra via youtube video and I'm loving the look of the phone already!
Z Ultra's are currently retailing for £250 brand new and I'm ready to purchase, but a genuine question, what are the massive cons of owning the phone and is it still worth it at this price?

I'm surprised the G3 is laggy, but it may be to do with the high res screen.
The Z ultra is definitely not laggy, and is the best phone i've owned. I came from an LG phone (Optimus 4X HD) and hated LG's skinning of Android. Sony's efforts are far more impressive and although I've tried the GPE Rom (Stock Android) I came back to Sony's firmware within a day.

I find it mental that you can even get this phone for £245!
It's definitely the best value for money phone out there at the moment that you can buy without an invite.
Been there, saw all phones, and got the ultra!

very, very worth for me, as of now cant see any competitor to our XZU, 6.4" screen, thin, metal & glass :good::good:

I bought my original Z Ultra for £549 at the beginning of last year and I loved the phone back then paired with the Smartwatch 2. I sold it back then but have just bought another brand new black one for £250, I use this as a tablet rather than a phone, I don't have the Smartwatch 2 this time.
I must admit that having been through a few phones since I sold it I'm a little disappointed with the KitKat firmware on my new Z Ultra, the display feels a little dim at 100% brightness but overall I think it's amazing value for money and great for watching Sky Go. I just love the sheer size of the phone but it does require a huge pocket to carry it around in.

There are atleast 2 different LCD panels that have been used. One has better contrast.
I just got the phone from amazon and I got it cheap from warehouse deals. First impressions, amaizing....
It was the cheapest most powerful device I found. I bought it for 250€ Not bad, considering what it offers
Its size isnt bothering me, I fear for the possibility of it breaking,
I've truly been debating about buying this, Z Ultra GPE, since it came out. Now that it can be purchased on the cheap it's making it harder not to. My main concern is; Android L? Will Google and Sony make the update available for the Z Ultra? I have a Nexus 5 (nothing wrong with it) but I've always wanted a phablet. Then again the next Nexus could be either 5.2-.9 inches so that could ease my phablet want... IDK, what do yous peoples thinks?

Speaking of phones, the dock is configurable to fit phones of different sizes. The double-DIN standard prescribes dimensions of 180×100 mm, so presumably even the Xperia Z Ultra phablet will fit (it measures 179.4 x 92.2 mm).

The head unit will be compatible with most Android phones via the app (which will be on the Play Store), though if your device is substantially larger than the Xperia Z1 it may not physically fit in the clamp mechanism, so Note 3 and Z Ultra owners probably shouldn't be preordering just yet.

Thanks very much for your post. It's very helpful for those of us considering a purchase of this XSP-N1BT head unit. I have an Xperia Z Ultra with dimensions of 179.4 x 92.2 mm so it seems that based on the posted max supported phone size for this head unit in the manual of 150.7 x 77mm my phone would NOT sit/fit in the dock properly, but I'm wondering if there's anything you can tell from having your hands actually on it that might seem like it could accommodate it anyway. Doesn't it seem idiotic for Sony's own engineers to not make sure this stereo works well with their current largest available smartphone? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. I'd bet there are loads of Z Ultra users like me trying to find this info, so they'd be extremely happy if you could post a picture of a Z Ultra in your unit if indeed it could fit, but any kind of answer from an actual owner would be awesome before I make a purchase I might have to return.

The Z ultra will 100% not fit in this deck, the largest device that did fit in there is the Samsung note 2, with a width of 80mm. Fitting the note 2 also required a significant amount of force to squeeze it in.
Sony's engineers/designers definitely had a brain fart while working on this unit, either that or the one i purchased is defective because the locking latch does not actually push down far enough to actually lock the z1 in place. This problem is hard to describe in words, but what happens in the real world is when ever i hit a bump, slight pot hole or accelerate/decelerate too fast, my z1 falls right out of the deck and sometimes hit me right in the balls . Although this would only be a problem if your car has stiff suspensions like mine.

But still no details of its being able to mount or if its too big
The best idea I can come up with is to either try it. Order one sample to your home or visit a local shop that can unpack one unit and you can take out your Z ultra and try to dock it in there.
...or just wait until someone else does it and confirms if it fits or not
Hi,
I smash my ZU screen 2 months ago, I was in a hurry and there is no ZU on the stock here so I buy a LG G3. That device is rock solid specs, roms, community is really good but can not feel comfortable with it. You can see lots of people out there using the same device. I give to my dad and go for an nexus 6. I'm using it for 3 weeks. Most of you know the device no need to tell about it but it is thick and bulky. Ne feel of premium device. Early updates are good but buggy. I use it but I don't love it. LG G Line, Sammy S and Note Line are all good devices, all you can fine well cookeded roms for them like CM variants, AOSP variants. But it is same for the Z Ultra too.
Last night I see the broken ZU on the desk, take it on my hands. It feels sooooo slick, premium and special. As a fellow ZU buddy of you, my advice is just stick to your beast-giant-premium ZU. Other devices are bad but only the waste of time for a ZU user. Only alternative for me is rumored Z5 Ultra for know. I beleive we'll is in in next 4 months may be sooner.
Just want to share
Well dah, I'm on my 5th ultra now

I have to agree with you. My ZU touch screen was not working. I bought a C5 ultra. I thought they share the similar spec. But it can't replicate the premium feel on the hand.

How do you find the Xperia C5? I like the look of the super slim bezels. How do you find the camera performance - it is the only issue I ever had with my ZU.
If your really a ZU lover you always have 2 on hand! Can always find one under $300

Slow camera launch and shutter speed. Other than that I have no issue, I am not nit-picky about the colour accuracy and low light performance. However, I do notice that photo can be blurry if my hand shakes a little bit. I think it is because the camera module does not have optical image stabilization.
Heheee I feel you buddy. Don't give up on this 6.4' beautiful monster. 4 months of ZU use and I wouldn't trade off for no 2015 device yet, 2 years since release and this [email protected] still feels rock solid and commands respect among equals!
Now waiting for Xperia Z 5 Ultra : A better camera with LED Flash, Less bezels &more battery juice maybe!:fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:
I have my ZU for almost 2 years now (January 2014) and I've started looking for alternatives. Besides screen size (anything smaller than 6" is too small), the thickness (or thinness) is very important to me. In that area, there is no quality competition.
The Xperia C5 is too thick, the X5 Premium is close, but a bit thicker and the screen is under 6".
There are phones from other makers, like the Huawei P8 max, but they don't have the beautiful Xperia design and feel. Somehow they feel like an augmented phone while the ZU really looks like something that is designed to be like this from the beginning, balanced and well proportionate in its size.
So, just like you guys, still no solution. I'll keep the ZU for now, just bought a new USB flap for it. And if something breaks, I think I'll buy the same model on eBay.

Two years I've had my Z ultra. I love this thing, best $600 I ever spent on a phone. At the time I was considering a note 3 or the Z ultra in the Z ultra with 100 bucks cheaper. So glad I didn't go with the note 3.
By the way, where do you buy a new USB flap?
