Will you be carrying the SGS3 in 2015? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
Just wondering - do you plan keep carrying and using your SGS3 in 2015?
Or planning to get a new device?
Cheers

I think I'll keep my s3 in 2015 also, as I don't have money for a new phone, maybe next year, but no more samsung. What about you?

Yup, currently happy with it.
Got myself a new original battery and its a solid device

Well no. For multiple reasons, I'm growing angrier with this device every day.
1) Can't find a solid ROM for the life of me. Any stock based is slow, any cyanogen is way too unstable (reboots my device every now and again, crashes my apps) which is unacceptable, I can be far from charger for a few hours and rebooting the device that many times drains it. Won't even mention other bugs here.
2) My home button died. Now while I can use the 'handy whats-it-called' to replace it, it slows me down insanely, since they are software keys, when you need them the most (something is crashing) they will take a few seconds to appear. Also, the funny thing is (at least that's what I was told by repair shops) that in order to replace the home key, one must replace the screen as well, totaling the repair at about 120-130e, which is the price of a new unit.
Unfortunately, time has come to part ways with it. Still between s5 and 5s, not sure which one I'll get next.

No, today is my last day with the SIII! moved on to a Moto X+1

Not very happy with my s4

After a few days of playing with my S4 I would have to say I'm not very happy with it. My smart stay setting don't work but maybe a 1/4 of the time if that. My voice commands don't work but half the time and I get a bit of lag from time to time. I've always used the stock browser in the past cause of flash player and now that don't work right, along with every now and then not being able to click links like its lagging but yet the url, bookmarks, Window manager, and menu button work. Plus the battery life hasn't been to great but that may be me being used to the note 2 battery. If anyone else is getting the same thing or knows of fixes please let me know. I have had these problems on fully stock, rooted with stock debloated, and now on rooted stock. Should I just wait and see what roms come out or should I try to return it and if I should return it is there a way back to non rooted fully stock? Thank you for your time.
edit 5/30: i just got done formating the int and ext storage to start from scratch. after that i noticed hyperdrive was just released so i installed that. phone softbricked cause i tried to install the ads mod from the app he has on the rom. was getting missing file errors and i/o error when tring to restore/wipe/install anything. did the no-wipe factory image and had to wipe data and factory reset after to get it out of bootloop. now im back and phone seems to be running great (but not sure about the voice commands and smart screen stuff just yet). i think my problem was i didnt change the save folder for titanium backup to sd card and i had some rom backups in the int. storage. figured this out when i went to make a backup and it said not enough memory. so if your having problems with lag double check your int. storage to make sure you have plenty of space.
Sounds like every S 4 I have ever seen.

Cleanrom would be nice right about now but I heard it will be a while till he can get his hands on one. Looks like I may have to just wait it out for some roms to come out And hope the wonderful devs can get this thing running good. God knows verizon cant do it.

Looking at his site, he got his donations, and was about to purchase the device. He should just be waiting for its arrival. Give it a week or two and he will likely have a ROM cooked

Thanks for the heads up! I ran it on my note 2 and loved it. Can't freaking wait!
Glad I brightened things up a bit for you!! Heck I am looking to upgrade soon and am considering the gs4. Been testing the waters in anticipation. I ran one of scotts roms years ago on my Optimus S (moved to the nexus s 4g, to currently the epic 4g touch) and he made a solid rom then, I know that.
I came from a note 2 as well. I can't wait for custom roms. The stock rom Sucks. I miss clean rom and beanstown but I'm sure everything will be here soon because the S series devices always have more development because they're more popular and more of an everyone phone unlike the note which isn't for everyone.

I've seen none of that. This phone hasn't lagged once. Huge upgrade over my Galaxy nexus.

I've noticed the Verizon S4 lags when compared to the T-Mobile variant.
the issue with links you cant click is an bug browser freezing up.hopefully they will fix it soon.temp u can clise tge broswer and then fire back up and it should work.
I wonder in Verizon applied the latest update like all the other carruers did that took care of lag etc...I remember something in early may that the other carriers were getting an update to address the lag issue and since our phones were just released last week...it may be a little bit before Verizon catches up.

The Galaxy S3 was the first android phone that I could say finally solved the laggyness that has been there since the droid. I have an iphone 5, S3, and the S4. The S4, at least mine, is clearly faster then my S3, and the even the iphone (which has always been pinnacle of non lag phones)......can't even compare with the S4 smoothness, and that is saying something.
I hate lag, hated it since the OGDroid, and can see immediately. I'm sorry you're having issues with you're S4, but I really don't know what alternative phone you could buy as of now.....because, if i'm not mistaking, the S4,HTC One or Iphone.....are the only phones you can buy with the least amount of lag as of todays date.
Best of luck to you.
Well I need to do some more testing with the voice command. I went outside today (were is bright) and noticed that some of the clear stickers on the side of the phone were still there. Just not to sure if the ones I pulled off was covering the mic. If it's better from here on out I will definitely feel like a de de deee.
edit: still having a little of trouble but it may have to do with background noises and the phone volume being all the way up.
Tks

Same here.
I turned off all the Air gestures, and other 'features' that I don't need or care about and switched to ADW EX launcher.
Very pleased with the S4.
I'm happy with my GS4. No issues with me. My battery has been treating me much better compared to my old LG Revolution. I haven't noticed any lag on my phone and that's something I noticed all the time on 2.3.6

That sucks. I'm glad I haven't had any issues.
I kept reading posts about the S4 being laggy, so I was a little worried when I picked mine up yesterday. Luckily, I seem to have a lag free version.
I came from an iPhone 5, and this S4 is much faster. Prior to that I had a gnex, and there is night and day difference between that and the S4.
Omg, Clean Rom is coming!!!!!! I cant wait, his roms are seriously top notch, I have renewed faith!!!!

What are you guys talking about here, you can run other carrier roms, what is your hold up? You can run any rom the ATT I337 can, to include sprint and t-mobile roms. you just need to use the loki patch (verizon) within the recovery apps. Smile and start here...Cheer up Charlie!

Thinking about jumping from SGS3 but have a few concerns

My first concern is will there be anything really that I would miss about the HTC One if I don't wait (I root and flash like crazy, so the new software isn't much of an issue). Also, how long does the battery typically last for? Is it comparable to the SGS3? How prevalent is the sim issue? Will I see it no matter what or is there a chance I will be lucky and avoid it? Is it worth it, or should I wait for the One?

My old roommate had an S3 that lasted two days on a single charge. My DNA is almost dead by the end of the day with moderate use. You can extend that quite a bit by installing BatteryGuru.

I got my DNA when Verizon was giving them away for free a few weeks ago. I have yet to encounter any sim card issues, so I think that was more of a problem with older DNA's, and has been fixed since then.

Battery life is more or less identical to the s3. What you get will depend on your usage.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
Battery life is always subjective. Some power use the phone then complain it's dead in a few hours. Some don't touch the phone at all then say the 30+ hours they get is great. The DNA is as good as as my GNEX, 18 hours.
If your a crack flasher then wait for the One. You can bet they'll be more development on that and possibly some devs that we have know will jump to that.
Overall I'm really happy with my DNA and it's stripped down Sense5 ROM. And I've never experienced the SIM issue.

I'm not what I'd consider to be a crack flasher. I just flash ROMS that work 100% with long battery life. Although, one thing that still bothers me is the idea that Verizon is going to try it's best to lock down the bootloader on the One, hard.
Though, the one other thing that I'm looking at is that I could actually get the DNA for free through Amazon and keep my unlimited data thanks to the basic phone workaround.
Thanks for replying everyone!

I would personally wait for the one or at least the droid DNA 2 if they come out with one.. SGS3 isnt a bad phone to wait a couple months with lol.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda premium
I didn't even know there was a sim issue. Battery life is on par if not a bit better than my old gs3. Though personally I'd wait for the one for the extra storage space (one starts out at 32GB) and the better speakers and camera if that's important to you. But if you have another upgrade in August as well this phone is free right now and I don't think the one will be out till August.
If, and only if, yiu think you can live with the DNA 2 years I'd say go for it.
It has the same internals as the Nexus 4 but with a larger and 1080p screen. It's fast and enjoyable with a Sense5 ROM.
The bootloader will certainly be locked down harder, if possible, due to the DNA being broken.
Plus, pure speculation, the new motorola phone is coming with "midgrade" specs. The DNA ought to run KeyLime fantastically, if it gets ported.
Just a chime in, my DNA has been in my hands since almost launch, and not seen the sim issue either. But I baby my devices, it doesn't get banged around or anything, may help the sim card from being jostled around maybe.

[Q] GNEX to DNA

Hello there i have a GSM Gnexus running on paranoid android 3.68 and i'm not really happy with it. Recently it started to show it's age and even though i'm happy with it's design and kinda emotionally attached to it, im thinking of buying a new phone. I've been doing a research on which phone i should buy and from both a financial standpoint and a user standpoint, i decided to buy DNA. I was wondering if anyone had regrets with buying this phone or think that they should have bought a different phone instead of this?
Thanks.
This is a great phone, and you'll love it if you're coming from a Gnex. There's not as much development as on Nexuses or Samsung devices, but there's still plenty of roms choose from. I personally don't regret buying it.
There are a ton of ROMs man I doubt your miss your gnex

I don't really mess that much with roms as i don't really have time for it i just want to apply the sense 5 rom to my phone if i buy it and i'll stick with that for quite a while. Also as i find it unnecessary to open a new thread can i use any kernel i want regardless of what rom iam using on my phone or do i have to use the ones that are compatible?

Aosp roms for anything built off of cyanogen. And then you have your sense roms that just use the sense kernels. I recommend crpalmers kernels aosp or sense they are excellent

I would use viper ROM if your going sense more customizable and other sense ROMs feel sluggish in comparison. Its not sense 5 though and of course this is only my opinion.

Get the DNA, you won't regret it at all. :good:
DNA is a good choice, first time I believe I've been able to enjoy android and leave it on the same rom for many months because it functions so reliably and quickly. Especially quickly, I've always hated how android stalls as a whole compared to iPhones.
For sense 5, NOS M7 is more or less the most common and reliable. There are 2 or 3 major sense kernels to try.
Beware, if you want Cyanogen, don't expect it to run as nicely as sense on this phone.
Oh, and <3 Battery life
I just came from gnex and I am so glad I did. Not a whole lot to choose from comparatively, but the device itself is such an upgrade.
Viper is unlike anything on the gnex, and Tranquil is not bad either.
The screen, sound quality, camera, processor, battery life, EVERYTHING is an improvement from the gnex.
I sold my bought the DNA on craigslist for 175 and sold my gnex for 140, so it's also an awesome value

Easily! Right now I'm on 9 1/2 hours battery life and 1 1/2 hours screen on time and I'm at 45% but that is on miui which is a much heavier rom than most.

If you plan on getting a new off contract HTC DNA its $599.99 USD (amazon wireless, usually the cheapest) Now if you can get google to ship you an HTC ONE G.E. its the same price for a slightly newer device which IMO is nicer than the DNA and is a GSM phone so it should work on all if not most GSM carriers (if thats what they are called)

i have to charge my phone everyday with 2 hours of screen time so that would be a pretty huge jump for me

3 years later

my Note is still my "go-to" device , even with LG G2 Pro , Note-2 and Moto X , this is my daily driver , i cant seem to find the others without faults and the faults are numerous , having been replaced several times , the G2 just plain sucks , the Note-2 I love but cant seem to get one that works very long and the Moto X is awesome with xposed , but without an unlocked boot loader its just no fun whatsoever , Im still running Avatar rom on the Note 4.2.2 and besides a few crashes now and then its flawless !
Ha I'll trade you for your g2 then you can have 2 beloved notes.

Please let me know what rom you use on your original note!
I looked at the original Note right before we signed our contract with At&t. I ended up going with the iPhone 5. I ended up selling my 5 for $350 a few weeks ago, and wanted to play around with Android some more before my upgrade in October. I picked up a mint i717 the other day for $100. It was still running ICS. I quickly rooted it, and now I'm running Beanstalk with uber kernel, and couldn't be happier.

I dont have that issue and wasnt aware of it , I did have a similiar issue with my winfone Samsung Focus , cant remember how i cleared it but had to do with the secret menu on the phone itself
I'm still rocking the note!
Glad to see others are too. Sure it's had its problems over the years, but it's still running OK.
I had the power button issue, the GPS issue, and I'm on my 3rd battery, but I still love it!
I'm running Candy Kat 4.4, most stable for me I've found, but I'll have to look into the suggestions you've made on what your running right now, I'm do for a clean wipe anyway
Sadly I am in the market for an upgrade, I will probably take a chance on the one plus one later this year (when it might be possible to find an invite without fighting a few hundred thousand other people for it).
I figure for the price it can't hurt to give it a go. I am without contract right now and I'd like to keep it that way lol.
*EDIT*
Also, I have the same echo issue, I never knew there was a fix?

I love my Note but the USB port bummed out on me a few days ago. No longer charges, but I plan on getting it fixed. Beanstalk has been my DD for a month or so. I have been looking at other phones though, possibly a Nexus or HTC
While I have moved onto the Note 3 myself, my original note is still running strong for my mom. She was unsure about the size of the phone but after an hour of using it she said she'll never use another phone but the note. The custom ROMs pulled from this site have greatly lengthened it's life and useability.
if anyone wants to trade their note for a droid dna,hit me up. the droid dna is for verizon but it has a sim slot and works on any gsm network,no LTE tho but will get HSPA+.
I too was thinking of rocking a Note in 2014. Found one for $70, is it worth it?
I'll honestly say, my phone still handles all the things I throw at it, just fine. Games like asphalt 8, etc, seem to run just fine.
I actually just got an invite for a oneplus one, so I will be upgrading. But if I didn't have the option, the note would still be fine.
If you're looking for a phone, and you don't want to spend a bunch of money, and it's in good condition, $70 isn't bad for a note. If I can get mine on a more stable Rom I'll probably give it to my mom, her galaxy s2 is giving her fits.

So who still checks this Forum ? ( ********* PLEASE READ ******** )

I know this device is old.. its the only one I have right now and have no clue if i'd ever get the money to upgrade.. just curious how many people still check this forum or if i'm one of the only few...
Also if you are a typical visitor.. maybe post up so I can get to know this Note II community.
Thanks!
interesting.. 10 views already and no votes or posts... lol..
i see it has 23 views.. and 2 responses. Great! so there is still some life here. Are any developers still here?
I still use this device for gaming only. I play Underworld Empire via WiFi/mobile hotspot. Have multiple toons in the games . It is rooted and running TeamOctos MM weekly build rom.
I use my old Note II as a training device for my 6 year old. The thing is a tank.

thanks guys for responses! So i'm guessing there aren't anymore developers still working on this phone?
Not sure if there is any that hangs around this forum. TeamOctos has their rom on their own website, I'm glad they still make weekly builds for this phone. Runs pretty smoothly for me.

First Off, thanks for the response!
Second, Yeah i would love to go with a newer weekly build and version of android.. .. but I just really like to have screen options to turn screen off, bring up power menu, and have options for screenshot and screen record. I had forgotten about the power of XPosed Framework ( which R3D utilizes ) and perhaps that could help make OCTos more useful for me..
I also do like some of the touchwiz features that I can use with the S-Pen.. so i'm torn.. LOL
I have xposed installed along with TeamOctos, gravity box mm module installed. Since TeamOctos rom have most of the features, I scantily use the gravity box options. Don't wanna break anything lol. I find the s-pen was more a gimmick than anything else. The capacitive buttons don't work with the pen, have to manually press with finger (this was fixed with the Note 3, which I sold). Also there are 3rd party apps that can do just about the same as the Samsung spen apps.

yeah i was using that for a little bit.. but I noticed the overall sound volume seemed to be lower... when I went back to 4.4.2 , i could really hear the difference... i'm not sure if that is a AOSP issue or what.. do you notice it?
Yes unfortunately it is because of AOSP. I remember having to manually editing a mixer.xml file to increase the volume but still wasn't close to the sound level of TW rom. I got use to the low lvls after a while.
Now I don't use it as my daily driver so sound isn't really an issue anymore. Performance and battery life is what I'm looking for so it's ideal.

Ahh ok thank you. that makes me feel a lot better to know it wasn't just me that noticed it and that it wasn't directly related to my phone or my flash status...
so I guess its not an easy fix or even possible since it wasn't addressed when this phone was still being developed... darn..
I really don't recall what the reasoning was, if it was due to drivers or software. It can be remedied by editing the sound file, I believe someone has done it with this phone. Do a post search for low sound or mixer.xml on here.
Haha not trying to sell AOSP roms or anything but I find them more useful with their options. Isn't that the main reason people use Android phones, for their customization?

HA yes.. but i guess for those of us that don't have multiple phones to try out different ROMs and updates :silly: constantly have to find the happy medium between stability, functionality and customization.. Right now i'm gonna stick with TW 4.4.2 (at least on my Note II) since I need to have these things on my phone for me to use it as a daily driver:
1. Stable (won't freeze up / random reboots / random power offs / FC'ers)
2. Camera - Camera must be able to take great photos (at least as good as the physical camera is)
3. Sound - Must have great sounding audio for voice calls / speakerphone / ringtones and for media watching
4. Functional - Must be able to not miss calls / notifications or messages and connect to data for internet
5. Battery - Battery must be decent to good.. want it to be able to last at least 1 day of medium to heavy use..

You are correct there. I could not find it either myself. I wonder if TeamOctos even included it in their build for this phone. I checked with another phone of mine (LG G3) thats running the same ROM. It has the mixer_paths.xml in the folder system/ETC. May have to contact them to find out why... Sorry, like I've mentioned, I don't use my Note II as a daily driver so haven't had the need to increase the sound levels. I wonder if its possible to just copy the file from another ROM?

yeah i thought about that but nervous with all that modifications either messing something up or not even getting it as loud as TW..
right now i think ill stay with a 4.4.2 rom and use xposed to get the features i like. do wish i had 6.0 but have to be happy with what i got. ?
Sorry I couldn't have been more helpful. Hope things will look up for you and that you may be able to afford a newer phone. This years phone releases haven't been all the great, maybe next year will see some really great improvements. The biggest thing is the battery life in most cell phones nowadays (unless you have removable option). Manufacturers will never give you a better battery/longer life because they want consumers to keep buying newer phones. Batteries usually only have a lifetime of about ~1.5 years, the more you charge, the less it will hold a charge. Forces people to buy new phones

yeah true.. and for me its difficult because i'm fairly picky with what I want in the phone... seems like i haven't actually found a "perfect" one yet... several will have 80 to 90% but some will be missing 1 major thing i want.. and then i have to decide how important that is... So far from all the phones i had.. I think my Nexus 5 would probably me my all time favorite... of course I would have preferred an AMOLED display, front facing speakers and better cameras... but again.. had to pick and choose... the HTC 10 was amazing as well.. but I did have some issues with my LTE signal dropping.. so not sure if it was a fluke or because of my Total Wireless service? maybe the ROM.. idk.. LOL
Hmm favorite all time, may have to go with my Note 3 til I sold it. Had it with Verizon, unfortunately the bootloader was locked and when I updated to Jasmine rom, screwed up and lost root. It was a great phone, s pen is so useful, removable battery, amoled display, SD card slot. Camera was alright, my V10 excels in that department! I'm with T-mobile now, service is great for where I need it and their phones are mostly bootloader unlocked. Can easily root them.
Watching Floss Carter on YouTube, with his review of HTC 10. His biggest negative factor is that the phone is too small for him. Everything else is good, he even mentions that HTC should've made two options like HTC 10 and 10+.
His top 5 phones:
1: Note 5
2: Nexus 6p
3: iPhone 6s+
4: S7 edge
5: LG G5
