Just got my new Nexus Player and after long search I can't find the right answer.
I want to connect the player to my Ethernet in my house for better connection and if possible to add an external HDD.
Here is my list of questions and I hope that I've got the the right place:
1. I want to have the maximum network speed and I have Giga cables in my walls . Is there a standards in the adapter that I need to buy to have the maximum speed? Or all the adapters have the same speed limit?
2. Is there a way to connect both Ethernet and USB HDD long side? Is there a magic box that have USB and also an Ethernet connection? If there is I would like to get an advise what is the best one to buy.
If someone have an experience what the items I need and have an advice what is the best to buy - I will love to get some links.

You'll need an OTG cable, a USB 2.0 hub (a powered one if you're going to hook up non-powered hdd), and then just about anything you want will work through the hub. For expanded storage you'll need to root and install stickmount. If you want to install large games then you may need foldermount as well.

In Amazon type in "ethernet USB hub", many results will come up. Here is a link to the first one. I don't know for sure if it is compatible or not though.

The problem is that even if the adapter supports full Ethernet speed the USB port on the nexus player will not.
So, you should get the benefit of a stable connection... But it will never be beyond USB 2.0 speeds.
I am connected to 2.5ghz wireless N and I haven't had a problem with 1080p Netflix, no stutters on YouTube and modern combat 4 and 5 both play with no lag.

Can anyone tell me why my USB flash drive doesn't always mount with my Nexus player? I've got a powered Plugable USB hub, with my pny 32gb fat32 format USB drive.
It keeps switching names and sometimes doesn't show up at all until after I rerun stickmount.
This happens after waking from sleep as well. I'm obviously rooted and unlocked what am I missing?
Also how do I activate pro on stickmount after I've purchased it. I just get a weird screenshots about the pro version when clicking upgrade....

My current portable hard drive apparently uses too much power for the galaxy tab.
Are there any 500gig + hard drives that use the same power as a thumb drive or is this just wishful thinking?

You will have to use an USB Hub with power supply. All spinning HDD's require much more power than the tablet is supplying.
I know it is not cheap, but you can today buy 128GB USB flash drives - they will work well and store also a lot of HD movies!
i am curious how you are connection your HD to the tab? if you are usign the usb host usb adapter, the little paper that came with it supports up to 32gb fat32 drives. i dont know if thats true or not, but if it is, you wont even be able to use a 128 usb flash drive as previously suggested.
i can confirm that a 32gb fat32 usb flash drive works, used with my sandisk cruiser 32
For portability the Seagate wireless drive would work.

Using a powered hub will work just fine with portable hard drives. I have a 500GB Seagate that works very well
The USB 2.0 spec can only handle supplying 100mA x 5. So 500mA draw us the max it can supply to any drive. I don't know of any drives that are that low, might as well use a flash drive or SD card.

Hosts are actually not required to supply 500 mA even. They are required to supply 100, and may negotiate up to 500 during device enumeration.
PCs that don't support 500 are extremely rare, but mobile devices with OTG are a different story - many are limited to 100. This seems to include our device.
2.5" spinning hard drives that use less than 500 can be found. Less than 100 is not possible.
As to the 32GB limit - I have no idea why that's in the flyer, other than maybe the fact that it's VERY rare to see drives above this size formatted as FAT since Windows refuses to format drives of this size as FAT.
I have a 120GB WD external drive that works fine on my netbook (single USB port cable) I'll have to pick up a USB adapter and try it.
IIRC as the size (GB) of the drive goes up so does it's power draw.

Though I suppose this Thread is kinda dead...I'd still like to know if there is a way to connect harddrives bigger than 32GB (and to format a Fat32 driver bigger than 32GB). Wish to stream media from my tablet to the PS3 and other players via Skifta...but I don't want to buy harddrives randomly, hoping they will work.
Tried with different USB Drives I have at home, but none works (well, NTFS of course).
Has anyone tried a bigger driver via powered USB Hub yet?
Or 64GB Sticks etc?

Sounds awesome! So, I suppose any powered hub works. Did you format the HD in any specific way or by the help of some fancy software (just wondering as I think Fat32 cannot be formatted under Win7 if the harddisk exceeded size x) ?

If your tab is rooted you can get "usb mass storage otg" from the market which support your ntfs formatted drives no need for fat 32 crap anymore!

Edit:think i figured how to go around. Find attaches the. Apk file. I found a few seconds delay while first opening. Also sometimes i had to reopen the app to allow root acces.because it didnt ask for root access on first run. Apart from the first run, its a breeze afterwords

So it's true, you actually have to format your 500GB drive as FAT32 to get it working?
I guess this means no HD movies (files bigger than 4 GB) right?
i plug in the lod fashioned 3.5hdd externally powered and ntfs formatted,
not able to connect 2.5hdds yet. if anyone was successful,what is powered usb hub used, i was not able to connect using a local brand of powered usb hub.

i already have a 300GB portable hard drive, but there is no way to connect this to the flyer, is there?
Some people have reported success with USB host on Flyer with Honeycomb using a powered hub. I have not tried that myself.
Most NAS (network attached storage) drives can be used with android, but i recommend you get one of the file manager apps that supports them from the app market. Most have a web based interface as well, but this is usually slow and clunky.
Many are way cheaper than this Seagate item.
I use Dropbox cloud storage with great success.
i use dropbox as well, for the small stuff...but i'm thinking more along the lines of entertainment when i'm travelling
i used to fill up my 300GB HDD with various music and video and and travel with a netbook...i'm trying to figure out a way of doing that with the flyer, with more space than the 32GB sd card

Often times, an Amazon or ebay page will give info on compatible devices with most hardwares. Look around and see if theres a flyer compatible hard drive online. I'm sure there is

are you 'sure' there is, or are you just assuming? because i can't find anything
other threads on xda say that a powered external drive 'should' work (but no one who has tried it has confirmed), and on androidforums they categorically say that it will not work
If you are only concerned with videos or music, get a DLNA compatible server and that will work with Flyer, problem with all of these is they need a wireless LAN and its hard to guess if they will work with the Flyer or any other device in a standalone mode. I"m betting the Flyer will refuse to connect to them ad-hoc.
This Seagate device does appear to have a unique ability to setup its own network allowing direct access without another router. Might be useful in that regard. Of course performance is going to be slow, but fast enough to stream one file.
Be sure and read the reviews of users for the android app before you buy one, they are very poor.

yes, i had read those app reviews, which has simply brought me back to the most basic of questions: other than 32GB SD cards, we have zero confirmed options on extending storage?
Unless you are sitting on a LAN via wifi, or you are running Honeycomb with a powered hub, you'd be a lot better off carrying extra SD cards. This is the same for MOST, not all tablets. Except for a couple of heavyweights, even those that have USB host don't have the power to run a external USB drive

It has 2 usb connectors one for power and data the other for just power.
I formatted it in Fat32 and found a 2 dollar adaptor to plug the data connector into my flyer.
I then plug the power connector into a usb power source (I’m using the charger from my EVO 4G phone)
Works great … all the files are displayed in Astro and Root Explorer.
I’ve seen the drives as cheap as 75 dollars. Just search around.

it's not self powered but i already have one of those cables (came with my flyer)

It’s really simple … if the device you are trying to use doesn’t have its own power supply it will draw power from the usb connection, however the Flyer doesn’t provide power.
So you will need to use a powered hub for your device to get power to operate

but if the external drive is connected to the powered hub, how will it also connect to the flyer? Y cable?

I’m running FlyHoney (haven't updated to latest leak yet) and after plugging in the device I go to settings > storage scroll down to usb storage then mount usb.
Then open Astro and scroll down ... there is new folder labeled USB.
OK, I have Honeycomb too, stock version, but the Host USB does not come online with either a standard cable or an OTG cable. The disk is powered by a Y cable or I can connected it the powered hub. The disk is formatted FAT32 as it should be , looking at the dmesg in terminal , the USB interface never even activates. I wonder if FlyHoney does anything special that stock HC does not do?

Thanks yes, I understand your setup. I have the same things with a Y cable and power, just saying that USB host is not generally available on the Flyer to my knowledge and lots of people wonder how to get it work so maybe Nick can help us out.

Do I have to root my Nexus 10 in order to read from a USB drive I've hooked up to my Nexus 10 using the mini-USB slot?
I'm using a conversion dongle, a AC Adapter powered hub, and have tried a thumb drive and a WD passport. I've confirmed that all devices work with a PC as well as with my Samsung GSIII (which is running CM10.1).
Is there a setting I need to enable or is this just something I need to root the device in order to get it to work?

Have you tried using the app "Nexus media importer" that works fine when im connection an usb drive. I havent rooted my N10.

Hi!
You either need Nexus Media Importer (as already stated) or root your device and use stick mount (or something similar) or flash a custom rom which natively supports OTG like any ASOP/AOKP or CM10.1 ROM...
I have both the original USB 3.0 Samsung cable + USB 3.0 Ports on my PC ( Asrock Z87 Extreme4 Motherboard).
USB 3.0 enabled in BIOS and everything. My computer detects it as 3.0 cable .
But whenever I select USB 3.0 mode on the phone and transfer large files,
I noticed there is barely or no difference in transfer speed at all, as compared to MTP (regular) mode ?
Is anyone in the same situation .
I heard this 3.0 feature is actually just for charging speed not transfer speed on the S5.
Can somebody clarify ?

I transferred a 9.8 gb file last night in under 5 minutes. I don't know exactly how long it took but I know after my 4:27 YouTube video it was finished. I have personally seen much faster speeds. Are you missing drivers for your mobo?
As for charging, I get the same voltage irregardless old which USB port I use. Only USB port I know that would make a difference is one of those new high voltage always on ports I hear about.

Whoaaa, the speeds are at minimum double than regular mtp. But where the 3.0 really shines is transferring a bunch of small files as opposed to a few large files.

I could never figure out how to get 3.0 to work

WELL...Apparently USb 3.0 is not supported by MTP w/e AT ALL :
"From what I see it's a technical issue with the Android OS. Certain android applications are restricted from being moved from the internal memory to your internally mounted external SD card. That's part of android's protection: your "external" SD card is no longer considered as an USB mass storage device. The reasoning popped out at me when I began to think about my HP Touchpad running CM10 (ICS). When I mount it to my Linux Desktop, it's still recognized as USB Mass storage device.
Using MTP protects permissions, users, groups, and other file management parameters. Unfortunately, libmtp has not yet been updated to support USB 3.0 speeds. We can only hope it will be as USB 3.0 is becoming more and more prevalent.
The only way I see one can benefit from USB 3.0 transfer speeds to and from android devices (Kit-Kat and beyond) now is to use an OTG 3.0 thumb drive, until that glorious day when USB 3.0 is supported by libmtp."

The reasoning popped out at me when I began to think about my HP Touchpad running CM10 (ICS). When I mount it to my Linux Desktop, it's still recognized as USB Mass storage device.
Using MTP protects permissions, users, groups, and other file management parameters. Unfortunately, libmtp has not yet been updated to support USB 3.0 speeds. We can only hope it will be as USB 3.0 is becoming more and more prevalent.
The only way I see one can benefit from USB 3.0 transfer speeds to and from android devices (Kit-Kat and beyond) now is to use an OTG 3.0 thumb drive, until that glorious day when USB 3.0 is supported by libmtp."

Has anyone here used one of these?
I use my tablet for just about everything so I'm always worried about running out of space.
But with this I could add so much storage space with usb drives, and an sd card.

I have been using OTG to transfer files from and to my galaxy devices and it is working very well
But the sad news is that our note pro cannot give enough power to portable HDD ( the ones i used were 1Tb and 2tb, on my note 3 and my note edge they work but not on the note pro)
You can connect flash memories and anything that consumes low voltage like a mouse or a keyboard or a flash memory

I'm not looking to connect hdd's.
I already have planned what I'm doing.
First of all I'm gonna find some way to strap it to the back of the tablet case, and then, I got 1 for now, ultra fit usb flash drive, which will go in one of the usb ports.
I got a memory stick pro duo adapter which I can slot two of my micro sd cards into, and then stick it in the otg.
And then one micro sd card in an sd card adapter to put in the sd card slot. :3
This thing makes no sense. It's great yeah, but it's weird, it can have three flash drives or usb devices running at once, but when it comes to cards of any kind, you can only use one at a time, even if one is in a usb adapter, it still won't allow two.
It makes no sense, usb all you want, but cards only one. Why?

Maybe the adapter requires extra power that the note pro cannot give
Can you send a picture of what you have and how you connected them to the note pro?
I will try it and see if i am having similar issue
Sorry, just came across this post. Here are several methods I use; a 128Gb Sandisk USB 3 thumb drive [http://a.co/9OVzdu5 ] and a USB 3 OTA adapter [http://a.co/jfMs2Yq ] along with the 128gb micro card in the device. If you need terabytes, get a wireless battery powered portable hard drive [http://a.co/fzM9ZPi], it works on mine. I also had a spare 240gb mSATA card from when I replaced my laptop drive. I bought a case for it and use that - the tablet has enough power to use it. Finally, I have connected a self-powered 2 Tb desktop drive with good results via the OTG cable. It just takes a while when opening your file explorer. Last, but not least, you can connect to your NAS via WiFi [ I use QNAP, and have accessed it from everywhere that I've visited that had good inet speeds via the QNAP apps]
Do you have more info on QNAP? Where to get it for instance? Is it in the Play Store?

QNAP is a hardware vendor for Network Attached Storage units - look on Amazon or NewEgg. I got the empty 2 bay one and loaded some spare drives I had laying around so I have 2 Tbytes mirrored now. Their apps allow remote access for files, music and movies to their devices.

I am using a Y-cable that powers device and allow OTG at the same time with usb 3.0.It is sufficient to power my 2.5 HDD
