Hi,
Is there any accessibility app/option to convert stereo to mono on an Android phone. A friend would like an Android phopne but cannot find if this is possible.
Apparently the iPhone has the option in accesibility settings but he'd like to avoid iPhones if possible! Hardware/Headphones were not up to scratch when he tried them.

I'd connect the L and R channels on the jack itself. Like solder them together... or if i had headphones like SHURE i'd use a cable...

Adaptors are normally pretty useless
As a fellow member of society not blessed with stereo hearing I have been trying to find solutions for this over the years.
Most adaptors simply tie the L and R together but this never seems to work quite right in that the sound from the missing ear is there but only just (Bohemian Rhapsody is just not the same) Really it needs something to actively mixdown the audio in the way.
Also there is the fashion horror of having a unsightly leads and lumps from it all dangling about the place.
The best solution I found so far is stereo bluetooth headsets (proper A2DP ones) and use 'Joint Stereo' if you can, it's still not perfect but does help on tracks with heavy stereo parts.
If anyone still is looking for a solution.

I bought one of the Pro versions with the offset bud and bass speaker design and it's awesome stuff, aside from being able to hear everything the sound is far better than similarly priced big brand stuff.
I live in the UK and shipping was cheap and very quick, a mate of mine who recently lost hearing in one ear bought the same as me and the cheaper design for his other half to use at work and said the quality was not bad on those either.
Guys post your opinions on the audio quality of the device and if possible also a comparison with your previous phones.

Disappointed. Don't like the headset at all. got replacement and it's fine and waiting for the smart headset to come out.well hopefully it'll be the best, I love listen to music and this time I'm really disappointed with Sony for sure. (Sad Face)
Why disappointed? Everyone knows that standard headsets are bad.

Can you expand a little - what exactly are you unhappy about? When you say you 'don't like the headset' - is it the sound quality or the ergonomics/comfort that you don't like? what aspects exactly are bad?
When we assess the audio performance of a phone, there are several separate aspects:
1. Audio output signal quality, i.e. the analog signal coming out of the phone jack. I would argue that this is superb, as can be witnessed by connecting it directly to a quality Hi-Fi system or high-performance headphones.
Has anyone noticed anything different in this respect - like distortion, noise or other defects? I haven't.
2. The audio quality in the main use of the device: as a telephone (unless we have forgotten that it can also make calls). Taken for granted most of the time, this audio quality was disappointing in my previous X10 - but on the X-S is significantly better. Call audio quality (including volume) is on par with the best phones I've used.
3. The sound quality when listening to music 'over the air', i.e. form the phone's built-in speaker. There are limitations how much loudness and/or bass you can extract form a tiny speaker in a tiny box - I hope nobody expects it to sound like a 500 Watt stereo system On speaker, the X-S is on par with the following models found around my household: Xperia X10, SE C905, SE C902, Nokia 5800. Differences are minor and, at this compromise level, not worth analysing. Subjectively, on built-in speaker the X-S sounds to me slightly but certainly better than the X10.
4. Audio quality via the standard headset provided in the pack. NOT (!) any extra /additional headphones - those are subject to your taste (and investment), see (1) above.
The kit headset is a hands-free unit optimised for making calls and not for music consumption. Yes, they certainly can play music (and many models do it decently, depending on the listener's audio culture and expectations) - but they absolutely must not be assessed and criticised as a musical device, they simply are not that.
Anyone who has the ears to hear the difference and values audio quality normally buys dedicated musical headphones. (Or already has them - as technology in them evolves slower than phones and they need less frequent 'updates'. I keep them over the life of 2-3 phones).
When we rely on the headset provided in the box, we voluntarily agree with the limitations - that those are a compromise, designed for making calls and also designed to minimise the cost of the bundle.

I'd like to think that we all agree with the above logic. Please feel free to prove me wrong (with facts) on any aspect of it. In this light, I would like to hear:
- What aspects of the audio is @chesterr (and others) unhappy about?
- If Sony disappoints, who else doesn't? What are you comparing the X-S with? What is your example of the ideal mobile audio experience (straight out of the box)?
Anyone could recommend a headset at, at max 50 dollars, for listening to music that works on it. Cable at least 1 meter and has to be in-ear.

Using Soundmagic E10s with mine and have to say I'm impressed - easily on a par with my iPhone 4s for audio quality - sounds pretty neutral to me and more than adequate for a phone imho.

Wow man you're promoting Sony or something I thought that I was doing that..
well It's Sony dude they should've done more better than this, I don't blame it but I don't like the headset.Okay If you're telling me to be happy with what I get for the price that I paid for, Okay then.
BTW I'm waiting for their new Smart Headset. and Hopefully it'll be better and yes the call quality is to the maximum comparing to the other devices and they've done a pretty good job with the equaliser and with the xLoud.But I feel like I'm not getting enough Bass. Anyways I hope Smart Headset will be out soon to get
Included earbuds are always crap. If earbuds cost less than €50/$75 they are crap by definition. I've heard the audio output quality of the Xperia S is brilliant and amongst the best of all phones ever made.

Bass is very dependent on the headphones. I just tried on a pair of Sony MDR-EX81 and the bass is thumpin!
Tip: If you really wanna splurge, try the Sony balanced armature series...
I'm really impressed with the audio quality on the xs. I came from a Samsung Galaxy s2 which is a truly awful mp3 player.
The only criticism I can find with the Sony is that the highs and percussion are often more pronounced than vocals, but having said that the highs are very detailed and defined, and a pleasure to listen to!
This is the best performing phone for audio I have owned. That includes the Iphone 3gs...

Could anyone compare the sound coming from the backside speaker to the Iphone 4 speaker output (music without headset).
Cause coming from the X10i and comparing to Iphone of my wife, x10i has a miserable sound (small tweeter behind speakerhole at the left side), Iphone4 has a much richer base when playing back music without headset.
Reading that SXS is "on par" with my X10i in that aspect is really not what i hoped to hear ....

When I compare the built in speaker of my XPS with my old x10 mini pro, the x10 mini pro has a better sound, but with stock hearphones I think XPS is better.

No, I'm not promoting Sony. Unlike Appleheads, I am not a blind fan - every time I am buying a new device I research all products in the market, from all brands and makers. I have a (rather complex) set of comparison criteria and carefully score all available options. The fact that my last few phones happened to be Sony (Ericsson) is not brand loyalty, they just scored top marks according to my criteria. As a rationally-minded (stupid engineer) I can only compare facts and measurable parameters. 'Cool' factor, fashion trends and media hype are not among my criteria - otherwise I always gave Apple a chance in my shortlists.
Talking of audio, I cannot completely ignore the fact that among all phone makers Sony is the only one that has been making audio equipment for more than half a century, including high-quality HiFi systems and components. That includes a (very) deep vault of patents, but more important - a wealth of experience and expertise that no other phone maker has, and no 'think different' genius can easily replace.
Talking about cameras (sorry about straying off-topic for a moment) - apart from Samsung no other phone maker has any experience in making 'normal' cameras, and even they started much later and excel at the cheaper end. Sony have been making (photo) cameras longer and long before that they were making professional TV cameras used by every major broadcaster in the world. That counts for some (deep) understanding of electronic imaging that no one else has. In fact, Apple respect this and have chosen not to reinvent the steam engine, but have built a Sony camera in their phone. There can hardly be a higher recognition.

Having moved from an iPhone 4 to the Xperia S I would say that the audio quality is ok but nothing special.
Listening through decent headphones (Klipsh Image X10s) the Xperia produces a good sound but I don't think it is as good as the iPhone. It is perfectly serviceable but the iPhone does a lot better in my view, especially with lossless files where you can really hear the difference on the iPhone and on the Xperia it is marginal at best compared to 320Kbps mp3.
I've no complaints about the Xperia and it beats the iPhone in most other respects but I think audio quality is an area where it could be improved.
I guess it comes down to the quality of the DACs used within it. Sony's audio experience may help but it cannot compensate for lower quality audio circuitry at the end of the day.
The output is also noticably louder on the iPhone and the Xperia may struggle to drive some headphones at a decent volume level. Its ok with mine but I find I am using 85% volume on the Xperia to get the same sound level as my iPhone running at around 70%.
Great phone though.
The sound quailty of the phones speaker is good.
The bundled headphones are poor.
The sound output via analogue is okay but not great.
The call quality is very good.
I moved from iphone 4 to xperia arc to samsung s2 to samsung note to xperia s.
Xperia arc's noise level is too high and both samsung s2 and note sounded too soft.
If lack of low frequency is not a concern to you, iphone obvious has a more open and detailed mid-range frequency reproduction (e.g. vocal voices). However, I still prefer XS for the more balanced sound.
output volume from XS is too low... hope it will be fixed by firmware upgrade.
anyway, XS is the best music player among all mobile phones i've ever had.
btw, I am using Shure 425 earphone and 840 headphone.
I don't think xs has good quality of sound indeed, I heard that there is a deficit for android or Qualcomm chips dealing with 48k (or 44.1k sound ). I am not sure about it but the default music player does improve music quality a lot.

I am quite disappointed with the quality of headphones come with stock. I am music lover. Love rock song also some bollywood songs and some osho discourses. I love watching movies with surrounding effect. I have never bought any earphone before so please enlightened me with best quality and clarity with great bass ear phones. Also it must be convenient to wear for long time

Very few models will provide volume controls and working answer/start/pause button, so an option might be to get the stock headset (which is dirt-cheap on ebay, but indeed poor) and replace on the main cable just the speaker with something that you like how it sounds (in the reasonably low-cost segment - under 50 - I was very impressed with some older Panasonic earbuds, but sadly the newer low-cost models are no longer in the same quality range, and you have to move to the middle-to-high-cost segment to get the same quality).
One piece of advice i can give you: don't buy earphones that are made for iPhone(but this is what you will get if you want quality) for controls. MIC will work ok but controls will suck.
I have Skull Candy 50/50 or something. the controls are not fully.
For calls and music listening:
- Ultimate Ears 300vm or 500vm (both on heavily discounted at Amazon due to discontinuance) - 26 db isolation - great products/great performance (select Android versions) - both $23 (do not be afraid of the low price)
For working out, heavier use, more critical music listening (and can handle calls just fine with extra isolation that goes into the ear canal) use:
- Etymotic Research MC2 Earphones/Microphone - 35 db isolation - $69
- Etymotic Research HF2 Earphones/Microphone - 35 db isolation - $128
(- Etymotic Research HF5 Portable In-Ear Earphones (Cobalt) - 35 db isolation - $120 sorry these are only headphones))
I own the300vms. the HF2s. Upon seeing the reduced prices I bought more of the Ultimate Ears 300vms for business use (where I tend to lose them occasionally). I also bought a 500vm to try out and compare. I finally bought a higher end 600vm for my wife/son's ipod/ipads.
The controls on the headsets work as intended including mute.Not sure why other phones have issues unless they are ipod/ipad phones being used in Android environment or vice versa. Those have issues (microphone, buttons).
Not sure why they are discontinued but suspect marketing and distribution issues, ie lack of commitment to full UE line by Logitech who bought UE some time ago. Get them while available.

PS...Both UE and Etymotic know 'ears', heaphones, primarily in the Pro Music market. They make the best products but just don't have the marketing hype of Beats, Bose, and other phones more freely available.
Yurbuds. I love mine, use them for running a lot and in general. Sweat resistant, great sound, a lot off different with mics, w/o mics, over the ear, in the ear, tangle free cords. That's just a few.

Try the JVC fxt90 .they've been around a while now but I still believe they're really great for the price approx $75ish on amazon. I currently own them and they are extremely musical yet detailed. They have great reviews on other forums as well.
Klipsch S4a and Sol Republic Amps HD are my favorite buds under 100 and even over 100 to be honest
VSonic VC02. They were probably the best In ears I've heard. There is also an earphone review site somewhere where you can get a list of all the earphones, the reviews, and the prices.
I have to give soundmagic a good review with the e10 and e10m if you need a mic. Very good quality sound reproduction. Just get some comply tips for them and you will be surprised what you thought were good ear buds. Both under 50 USD.

As someone mentioned earlier I support the Xiaoumi Piston 2 headphones. The volume and Google now button work great as does the microphone. The sound qualty is really good IMO and I enjoy using then on my Asus Laptop, Note 3 and 2nd Gen Nexus 7.

Sennheiser 280 headphones, but you'll probably have to order them online or at a musical instrument store (selling guitars and microphones for example). I paid $110 Canadian for them, so they're probably $100 US or less. Best headphones I've ever used. But they're full-size, over-ear headphones. If you're an audio person, then don't waste your time or money on earbuds. To create sound (of any quality), a speaker needs to move air. It's not possible to get quality sound from a ¼" speaker, since it's too small to move enough air for quality sound.
The only downside (for some) is no Bluetooth on these headphones. But if you're looking for good audio quality at a price worth paying (Bose sounds good but it's just overpriced) then Sennheiser 280s are worth every penny.

Also depends if you want wired or bluetooth headphones. I have bluetooth headphones LG tone+ 700 and 800. Love both. 700's usually are 50 bucks or 800's will run you higher right at that 100 dollar range. I find that they have great audio quality, (the 800's are better) and the charge lasts for 8 hours and you don't have the whole cord thing to deal with. I exercise with them and use them for my daily commute. To deal with calls, the sound quality is good and i don't get any complaints. I'm able to use the buttons on the neck wrap (this thing lays around the base of your neck) and it works well for forwarding tracks or going back tracks. The volume control works fine and answering calls are fine. Just thought you might be interested.

+1, I loved my Sennheiser - Adidas CX680 they didnt have a mic but the sound was great for a sweatproof headphones, now I moved to a Jaybird Bluebuds X they are bluethooth they are more expensive but I'm very happy with them.

Don't be fooled by the price. They sound extremely good and are very durable. All the controls work on our phone.
Just make sure you buy from an authorized reseller, as you don't want to end up with a fake copy.
Just got a set of them, granted the price $159 was a little steep. I just didn't want wires, and working out with the Note 3 its a little tough. I was looking on amazon and best buy, but needed to go to target for some house stuff and walked by and saw them for 159 instead of 199 everywhere else. I guess its a 3 day sale according to the clerk that rang me up. The website says 199, but they are on sale in the store. Ill take a pic of the receipt later today...

Beats Audio - for those more concerned with image than quality.
Bad choice. Sorry to sound harsh but, basically, you have paid a 40% premium for a brand name, and not a particularly good one at that. You could have gotten a far better wireless solution for less money, and they would have had a frequency response that didn't involve the mid and upper ranges being overpowered and ruined by ludicrous levels of bass like all Beats Audio headphones and buds. Just one example are JBL J46BTs which you could have gotten for near half the price. There are others.
Yeah they are over priced but so are many things we buy. How do you like them? I bought some wireless Jaybirds Bluebuds X locally for $55 and i love them but i like the design of the Beats better.

Yea, I like them they sound great. Granted the price is higher than most they are the only ones that fit my ears correctly and comfortably. I hate having earphones fall out when i am running or zipping while mountain biking. Sure Beats is expensive, they sound good, feel great.
I tried theses - JBL Synchros Reflect BT In-Ear Bluetooth Headphones with Mic - Black (JBLREFLECTBTBLK) they are $100 dollars, they would pull out because they don't wrap around the ears. I also tried I tried Bose's SIE2i headphones, but the volume was far too low. They are great headphones but wanted something wireless.
Comfort - I wore these for 4 hours straight doing yardwork today. My ears didn't ache or felt uncomfortable.
Bluetooth - connects instantly, long range is great approx 30-45 feet outside, and have not experienced any skips or connection interruptions yet.
Mic - Great for calls can hear the other party on the line, and they can hear me great.
Price - $159, But in my opinion, they're worth it.
Its like anything, as a Mechanic I buy SNAP-ON, why because they are top tier when it comes to tools. Smooth and allow the ratchets to move in a few degrees to get what you need done. We all buy Brands that we like. Whether its clothing or what not. 200 dollars is steep, but 159 I needed to try them to make sure they fit and got the Job Done.

Comparing Snap-On tools to Beats is disingenuous. Snap-On are worth the premium you're expected to pay, Beats are not.
Looking online here in the UK at least, the Beats retail for around £160 and the JBLs for around £70. You also have the Jabra Rox which can be picked up for around £90. Both of which have better sound quality than the Beats offering.

Not sure how the beats sound but I just got a pair of jaybird freedoms for $30. They sound great. I've tried a few bluetooth headsets and they are the best I've used. The only issue I have is I have to put a tie in the cord that connects the earpieces otherwise it hangs on my neck and sticks while I jog. Other then that they are great especially at $30.

I got these for $14 on Amazon lightning, but they are worth $25. The first pair went back under warranty repair.
Overall, they are great. Battery life is awesome, and they are, in fact, waterproof! ( The second pair I got I inadvertently left outside in the rain for 24 hours once and they still work fine)

jbl with note 3
Hi guys,i i have my new bluetooth speaker jbl 3 and i have a problem when i connect it with my note 3.when i play music from my library,everything is ok.if i turn on the wi fi (to play music by live radios or you tube)it disconnect!after 1-2 minutes connects again for a while and after that disconnect again.has anybody problem like this with his note?
Just got me a pair of the PowerBeats 2 wireless at Best Buy for $99. Not sure how long the sale is going to be. I don't understand why people give it so much flak. The market is there to give choices to the customer. Animosity towards those that purchase Beats is like someone being upset someone bought Nike Jordans or UA Currys for basketball shoes over another more affordable brand.
I have the Bluebuds X that I purchased last year and Bluebuds X2 that I purchased when they came out. For what they are marketed for, they are by far the best. The market isn't for audiophiles. It's for people that need them for an active lifestyle. I can't speak for everyone else but they work great for the upbeat music I listen to when I work out.
The fit when compared to my Bluebuds X & X2 is much better. I can wear them without them falling out during a sweaty cardio session and they don't irritate my ears like the wings on the Bluebuds do.
Sound quality wise I think everything in the $100 - 200 price range for the most part sound the same in regards to bluetooth headsets (please read https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/bluetooth-basics to understand the limitations of bluetooth headphone technologies). The differences are subtle enough that if you aren't actively trying to critique them, it sounds the same. Also keep in mind the source file quality. Let's just be honest, many people utilize one or another type of streaming service. The free ones are typically music compressed down to anywhere between 64-128 kbps for free streaming, and caps out at 320 kbps for paid services. I highly doubt anyone has a lossless 1411 kbps audio collection on their phone/ipod/etc. Unless you have a lossless audio collection, the differences in sound quality for BT headphones in this price range are for the most part negligible. What's noticeable are the preconfigured EQ settings of the headset. (I.E beats products tend to be a "U" with a focus on bass and treble, Bluebuds for the most part are flat with slightly more emphasis on mids).
For specific comparison, the Bluebuds when comparing to the Powerbeats 2, the Beats have much clearer bass response, mids and highs are comparable. Overall, I prefer the listening experience with the Powerbeats because with my Bluebuds there are times when the music sounds artificially filtered.
Bluebuds have a much better sound isolation, whereas the Powerbeats are designed to allow some ambient noise so that if you have them in while running/gym/exercising you'll still be aware of your environment.
Just my two cents.
After running through a few sets of Samsung earbuds with my Note 4--generally, they would snag on something, following which one of the earbuds would stop working--I looked for something more durable, with significantly better sound, but without breaking the bank. A hi-fi stereo system, it's not.
My research led me to the Xiaomi Piston 3, a joint product of the same company that makes the phones and 1More, which offers well-regarded earphones at significantly higher price points.
To get the best price, I also looked for a reliable Chinese vendor. I ended up buying from Gearbest. Last August, I paid $15.13 plus $1.67 for faster shipping; slower shipping was, and still is, free. Today, I see Gearbest has them for $12.29.
Even at twice the price, I think they'd be a bargain. I enjoyed them thoroughly, listening mostly to classical music, acoustic folk music, folk rock, jazz, and popular music. theheadphonelist recommends them, rating them 10/10 for value.: "Very comfortable fit; fantastic sound quality for the price; 3-button Android remote." It's sound signature is somewhat v-shaped, meaning that the bass and treble are somewhat enhanced. I say "somewhat," because if you're a real bass-head, they're not for you. On the other hand, the mids are fairly clear and present.
They have a microphone and three-button remote located on the cable to the right ear. All three buttons work on Android phones. In using the Piston 3 for phone functions, people on the other end never complained about call quality. They come with four sets of eartips: XS, S. M (on the earphones), and L.
I found the Piston 3s quite comfortable to wear for long listening sessions. Over a little over six months, they worked flawlessly. Perhaps because of the wrapping of the cables, the occasional snag didn't led to disaster.
My only problem is that I somehow lost them shortly after getting by Galaxy S7. After more research, I decided to try the newest model Xiaomi earphones, with hybrid dual drivers, that is, the Xiaomi Hybrids have one dynamic driver for low frequencies and one armature driver for high and mid frequencies. Again, I've bought from Gearbest, $16.99 plus free shipping, or faster for only a little more. After I've had and listened with them for a reasonable time, I'll report back.
Meanwhile, I'd appreciate others' thoughts, and especially experience with the S7.
I'm using the Piston 3s once again, having purchased them for my LG G2, before switching to iPhone. I definitely became spoiled by all the 3-button iOS remotes out there and wish there were more for Android. Ideally, I want a sweatproof pair with earhooks, a 3-button Android remote, and a shirt clip. Basically, an Android version of my Klipsch AS-5i.
The Piston 3s sound fine, though I'm not crazy about the fit. I just switched to the L tips and that helps a bit, but the seal isn't terrific. They're more comfortable and a lot better sounding that the Samsung buds that were included. Those make the Apple EarPods sound premium. I'm interested in what you think about the Hybrids after you've had a chance to listen.
U guys are like writing an essay. Got Xiaomi headset myself. Sound is fine. Controls are to close to each other.
