Any kernel that we can restore our DRM to? - Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

Hi i successfully rooted and backuped my TA, thanks to the guide written here. Unfortunately, the ending FW was for Z3 which really wasn't functional for my SGP621. I cannot revert to stock without losing root because it would overwrite kernel and system of the rooted FW now. My question is, is there a rooted stock kernel for unlocked BL where we can restore our DRM partitions and also maintain root at the same time?

Mate, follow the instructions on this link and you can have a rooted stock rom with TA restored no problem.
To gain read/write you'll need to run this script. No need to follow all the instructions there, allow usb debugging and run the bat file.

[Q] Please help me get my head around rooting

Hi all,
Excuse the noobness but trying to get my head straight before I dive into rooting and flashing custom ROMS
I currently have a Telstra Australia S2 on kernel DVKF4. My aim is to root and flash Litening ROM
I think to flash Litening ROM I do not have to Root I can just go ahead and flash it however I would like to take a backup of my current firmware first, if I go ahead an install Litening my original Telstra will be gone and wont be able to back it up now?
If I understand this correctly I first need to root and I need to flash an insecure ROM. Now currently the DVKF4 insecure ROM hasnt been uploaded yet... Can I use any old kernel to get root access?
I know if I do this I will get the yellow warning label but will this even matter since after I gain root I am going to flash litening anyway so that will replace the kernel anyway with the litening one and I will not get the yellow warning. Correct?
Anyhoo I wanted to backup current Telstra firmware in case I need to flash it back for warranty. Also I would have to unroot it. So in order to do this I would firstly restore the backup made which would flash back the original telstra ROM but the phone will still be rooted?
Since I made the backup with the 'any old' kernel to get root does that when I restore I am going to have that kernel still on phone and giving me yellow warning?
OK so I would have to flash back the correct DVKF4 kernel to get rid of it again. So I would have to flash back the original (secure) kernel to get rid of this and user superoneclick to unroot and then its back to its original state? (besides the download counter of unsigned ROMS which can be reset with jig)
Also does the yellow warning come up even if you use an insecure kernel which is the same version your firmware needs?
I thought it's the kernel which gives the root access but it's not is it? It just allows superoneclick to install the superuser files etc?
Thanks!

True but you may find copy on Branded roms post dev section or use vanilla Samsung stock rom .
If I understand this correctly I first need to root and I need to flash an insecure ROM. Now currently the DVKF4 insecure ROM hasnt been uploaded yet... Can I use any old kernel to get root access?
Depends upon what the instructions say but generally as near to possible as your rom .
I know if I do this I will get the yellow warning label but will this even matter since after I gain root I am going to flash litening anyway so that will replace the kernel anyway with the litening one and I will not get the yellow warning. Correct?
Incorrect you will need the USB recovery jig to remove the warning and reset the custom rom counter to zero the easy way .

A backup via CWM of a phone will restore what you backup .
To restore unrooted you will need to save unrooted in the first instance .
Original rom or branded rom flashed via Odin will remove root .
I thought it's the kernel which gives the root access
Yes if you use the usual method no if you use another method .
Root & CWM kernel.

Hey thanks but how do I make a backup of the unrooted current carrier ROM? Don't I first need to gain root access to be able to run CWM and make the backup?
Or is there a way I can go into recovery now with the device currently unrooted and stock carrier ROM and make a backup?
Thanks

As was pointed out above by JJEgan, either wait for the Telstra carrier branded firmware to hit this thread.
Or you can try the root/unroot method as described here. Good luck

yeah thanks I get that part it's just that he mentioned if I want back a backup of an unrooted rom I need to make the backup while unrooted but I did not think this was possible since you need to root first before being able to backup?
Just after some clarification about that.. Thanks

[Q] Unrooting Note...

Greetings,
I rooted my note using Da_G's process which worked great. I then tried to "unroot" it using the kernel pda-odin-att-stock-kernel.tar and it appears to be still rooted (Titanum Backup still gets root privs). Do I need to flash the 400MB .rar to remove root?
Thanks,
Bugly
I believe you need to follow the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506330
Don't forget the factory reset at the end.
Thanks for the reply...
I did use that particular process but since I only flashed the kernel to root it shouldn't I only have to flash the stock kernel to unroot?

No because a kernal by itself doesn't provide root. If you read Da_G's original post it says that the kernal runs an auto-root script on /system. That is where the root takes place. That is why when you flash only the kernal your system is still rooted. You must flash stock system as well.
Okay... that explains it...
Thanks for the help...
One more question if I might... If I just flash the kernel does this set things up for a successful OTA upgrade?
Thanks...
It's only guaranteed you will get OTA updates if the phone is completely stock. Sometimes rooting alone will still allow you to get OTA updates, but from what I've heard, it's very hit or miss.
However, if the trend continues from what was done with the Samsung Captivate, then any serious update for the phone will be via Kies and not OTA anyway.

New method discovered to root Xperia (Mini) Stock ROM?

I think I just might have discovered a (relatively) painless and (relatively) quick method of rooting a stock Sony ROM. The following process was executed on an Xperia Mini with bootloader unlocked via testpoint method.
1. Flash stock .431 Sony ROM (downloadable from here)
2. Reboot and let the initial setup steps complete
3. Hotboot using FlashTool with EXtended Stock Kernel available here
4. You are now partially but not completely rooted as TB will inform you
4. Connect to Google Play and update installed apps.
5 This will also update Superuser (remember, we're hotbooted using the EXtended Stock Kernel so Superuser is installed by default.
6. When you update Superuser, most probably what it does is push the appropriate files and set the correct permissions into the operating system.
7. Reboot normally now (with the standard/regular Sony included kernel) and you'll find yourself rooted as can be verified by TB and rootchecker
Please hit the thanks button if this was at all useful. It would be awesome if somebody could corroborate this by independent testing as well.

this wasn't a permanent flash of custom kernel. i temporarily hotbooted the custom kernel, updated superuser then rebooted back into stock kernel and the root was still there

Anyway this method is for unlocked bootloaders and why do such long procedure when you can have a rooted device with one simple step?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
well, if you want to have a completely stock ROM including stock kernel without flashing a custom stock kernel which you would otherwise have to do if you wanted root
so basically you're retaining everything stock plus you have root as well
naw, if you reflash kernel.sin without wiping data you retain stock kernel without loosing root..

thats my point, isn't it, you only have to permanently flash the stock ROM including stock kernel just once, that's it.
after that, you just hotboot once with extended stock kernel, update superuser, reboot normally and you're good to go
Every one can root stock ICS with unlocked bootloader! So I found nothing new in your method except pain in the ass process! Isn't easily to flash autorooted kernel and switch back to stock if you want to use it
Sent from my ST15i using xda app-developers app
Actually the extend stock kernel is still stock kernel. The kernel binary is still the same as sony stock kernel, difference is just in ramdisk, added cwm and autoroot. If u already flash it, doesn't make sense to reflash stock kernel again. U got built in cwm without need to reinstall cwm after every rom flash, with the same exact kernel as stock kernel.
One little thought : Many people might want root without unlocking the bootloader, because once you unlock it, there is no turning back. So, that does not sound as "everything stock" And moreover, unlocking bootloader is really a scary process for many. I myself got root first, and unlocked the boot loader months later.

Error playing YouTube, no audio will play. Modified mixer_paths.xml on GPe

So I just got my phone and noticed the volume playing music was a little low. I installed this mod and now I have no sound! I can't play YouTube anymore either, it says a problem while playing. I tried to restore my original file and it didn't work. I factory reset it and still no change. I'm rooted but on stock and still have a locked bootloader. I would love to just start over but I think you have to unlock the bootloader, which I really didn't want to do. I wish I could just go back to stock and update up to 4.4.4. Any suggestions?

Does anyone know of a way to make the volume louder? My Note plays stuff much louder than this and I would like to boost the sound a bit. The clearboost (?) didn't help much. I would also like to remove that loud noise can damage your hearing warning, but right now I'm just happy with having sound back!
Yes to flash the 4.4.2 full OTA (modified) you will have to be on an unlocked kernel. If all else fails then follow these steps (all in the [Guide] thread in the GPe section):
Back up the TA with TAbackup
Unlock BL
Flash or hotboot DooMLoRD's advanced kernel or DooMKernel
Use custom recovery in new kernel to flash the modified 4.4.2 OTA (link is in guide I think)
Restore TA (this will relock BL)
Follow OTA updates back to 4.4.4
Root with towelroot
You should now be back to where you started

Oh okay so the only way to fix this is with the unlocked bootloader? I'm trying to do Doomlords adb sideload but its difficult getting my computer to even recognize the adb commands. I was hesitant about unlocking because I remember reading broken cameras with the updates.

So I've been reading and I really don't feel comfortable unlocking my bootloader. It doesn't help that when I go to BackupTA it just hangs at waiting for debugging, even when it tells me on the screen debugging is running. Is there a flashable 4.4.4 zip for this phone? I saw one but it was for the regular Ultra and I tried to flash the 4.4.2 but it wouldn't let me downgrade. I'm really stumped! I can't believe this one little hack completely ruined my device!

Thank you but that didn't work. Neither did me restoring my old mixer_path. I'm at my wit's end here, I'll probably just send it back and get another one.
I was looking for a whole 4.4.4 flashable rom that's stock, but I can't find it anywhere, just the OTA incremental zip. I was just going to flash that and do a factory reset, but I can't find a zip that will install! I would consider myself pretty smart but I'm genuinely stumped here.
Thanks for the mixer_ though

none of the incremental ota will install on to anything than what they are meant for. The 4.4.2 full ota can be installed from a custom recovery as I've said, and if you do it correctly there will be no difference to a new one.
I missed a step or 2 above though:
Back up the TA with TAbackup
Unlock BL
Flash or hotboot DooMLoRD's advanced kernel or DooMKernel
Boot into recovery
Use custom recovery in new kernel to flash the modified 4.4.2 OTA (link is in guide I think)
Gain root (hotboot doomlords advanced stock kernel and flash supersu from recovery)
Reboot
Restore TA (this will relock BL)
Follow OTA updates back to 4.4.4
Root with towelroot

To get back to stock 4.4.4 u can unlock bootloader and fastboot the system.img from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2799423

Need a bit of input?

Okay,I posted recently about my old z ultra. I bought the z ultra off Craigslist and it was updated to 5.0.
Anyhow the screen got the dreaded 'hairline' Crack in the screen and Sony covered it.
They sent me a new phone international version and the first thing I checked were the hidden functions in the dialer. Rooting status says yes or bootloader rather. Also the phone is still running 4.3. I did some searching and found a root method. I don't want kingroot or any Chinese crap.
Do I need a computer? Can I root using towelroot? Install busboy? DL cwm and flash via the phone?

Nope. Towelroot does not work on 4.3. I hope my phone doesn't force a system update. I'm still 4.3 for now.
Not a gpe edition either
Screw it. I think I'll just take the update
This is why im tempted to multi post. A moderator warned against multi post. Ive had this post up for a few days now and ive not got one answer.
I need to know about 4.3 jellybean. My phone was shipped with it. Do i have to use flashtool? Whats the first step? I haven't taken the update. Im still 4.3
PLEASE ANSWER
Hello there lonely islander! I'm randomly passing through with my ship, and I caught your smoke signals.
I can't really remember the root situation on 4.3, but there were quite a few rooting tools in the cross-development section. Not sure if those were for 4.1 or 4.3 though. I'll do some digging and I'll be back.
What's the firmware version? .290?
EDIT: Okay, so I've done some searching, and this method was the one that people used back on 4.3. It's not perfect though since it required the use of Vroot, which is/was the same type of rooting tool as Kingroot, so that's probably a no-go.
Another way of doing it would be to downgrade to a firmware that's supported by towelroot. That would be 4.1? 4.2? Find out which version is compatible and find that firmware FTF in the Dev section. You'll probably have to do some digging since a 4.x ROM thread will be quite old. Flash it using Flashtool and then root with towelroot.
But...
What's your plan now? Backup the TA partition (DRM-files) and then unlocking the bootloader, update to 5.1.1 and easily root again through fastboot since your B/L is unlocked? Or are you planning to keep the bootloader locked and live the rest of your life on an ancient Android version?
EDIT 2: Have you tried this tool on 4.3? It's based on Towelroot, but it's customized for rooting Xperia devices. I think that maybe, probably, it'll work on 4.3. I don't know, so go ahead and just try it unless you've already done it.
EDIT 3: Okay, so it looks like the tool provided in "Edit 2" should be compatible with Android versions up to 4.4.2 before being patched by Google/Sony in 4.4.3/4.4.4 (KitKat), so it should in theory work on 4.3.
EDIT 4: OKay, I have no idea what's real anymore. I just stumbled upon this post from that thread:
v 12.4 worked like a charm on my Xperia Z Ultra C6802 (4.4.4).
Did TA backup. Installed SU chainfire and updated binary in normal mode. Got write to external SD card ability on my Total Commander without any SDFix app. Thanks.

So... just go ahead and try it. If it fails, then you can downgrade using Flashtool if you're into that.
Build is 136. No,you are correct. King root is king crap. Im not going back there. The bootloader status says yes. Will i have to use the sony web site to unlock bootloader? Yes, i want root and i want too flash roms.
So,can i just root and install safestrap, superSU or do i have to unlock BL.
I could update to 4.4.....
Okay. Forget what i want. Tell me the steps i need to take. Im on 4.3. Build136. Yes i wanna root and i wanna rom..

Alright. First step is to test and see if that root tool I linked to in my previous post works. If it does, great. If it doesn't, it'll get a little more time consuming.
But the important question here is: Do you care about the DRM files? They control mostly the camera which will be a little affected by the loss of the keys. It'll happen either way when you unlock the bootloader, but backing them up allows you to restore them later if you ever re-lock the bootloader for some reason.
So you can either:
1. Backup the DRM files, but doing that requires root, which is fairly hard to obtain with a locked bootloader, which you are currently witnessing.
2. Ignore the loss of the DRM files and unlock the bootloader right now. When you have unlocked the bootloader it'll allow you to boot and flash custom code, like a custom kernel with recovery (CWM/TWRP/Philz) which again allows you to flash SuperSU and be done with it, or flash a different ROM. It's the easiest way, but you'll lose the DRM keys. They might become handy if you have to send your device in for repairs down the road (if you have any warranty left, that is)
So what you need to decide right now is what you want to do.
Should i update? the next update is 4.4.2. I could take it then use watevr roottool. So root first then unlock bootloader

Alright, now we know.
If bootloader status says YES on unlocked, then it's already unlocked, and we've wasted a bunch of time! If it's already unlocked, then just install recovery.
Bootloader unlock allowed:yes...... So i take it,its not.
Can i use flashtool? I tried sony "official " way and i did NOT understand it. So ive read into flashtool and it seems easier.
If i get a recovery on this thing im good from there.
I dont understand the steps. On Samsung note devices its root, safestrap, SU then happy flashhing.

OK. Here is what you need to know and do.
1- you didn't need to upgrade. A towelroot variant would have worked.
2- you don't need to unlock bootloader.
3- you need to install, from a PC onto your phone, what's called Xzdualrecovery, which is essentially a recovery. Google it and download the latest installer for this phone. You need to enable USB debugging on the phone so it can be installed from the PC. When your start the installer there is an option to instal AND root. This tool comes with the variant of towelroot tha can properly root your phone, if your OS date is before June 7 2014.
If you need help with these steps message me.
Thank u najoor. I have only updated to 4.4.2. I tried towelroot. Didnt work. I have a c6802. So im completely stock and your saying theres a tool out there that can root and install recovery from a pc.
Flashtool? Could you provide a link?
