Greetings everyone,
The first two weeks with my Nexus 9, I used to play with it every now and then. Mostly watching videos and taking few notes. The only big thing I can think of doing on my tablet is reading ebooks.
For the past month or more, I have barely used it. Reason being that pretty much everything the tablet can do, our smartphones can do.
Maybe I am wrong to think that a Windows tablet would have been a better choice - so, I would like to hear what you guys use your Nexus 9 to if you already have a decent smartphone?
Looking forward to a good discussion

I bought the keyboard and use it as a chromebook on the go... I am taking online classes and I got all the Microsoft programs on it to do my homework... And my text books are on it...

I use mine as a replacement for my 7 year old desktop. I put the desktop in storage in the basement. The only time I use the desktop is to use fastboot. I also have the Microsoft apps on the n9. I use it in meetings, for spreadsheets and PowerPoints. At home I use mostly for cruising the web. If I didnt need fasrboot for the n9 and my n5 Id ditch all other computers for good, as I no longer play pc games.
book reading, comic reading, music playing, work out tracker... occasionally use it for videos as i have other tablets and laptops that have bigger screens. i got it as a replacement for my galaxy note 8 - which is a damn good device, i just had an upgrade itch going on that wouldn't go away
i've had 3 wintabs, samsung 500t and 700t and currently still have my transformer t100. the battery life is freaking awesome on the t100 - about 11hrs of actual screen on use. only drawback is that no decent browser is very suitable for touch. chrome was the closest, but when they removed stackable tabs it worsened the experience. ie is great for touch... but it's still ie, lol.
Mainly i use it for Clash of Clans and other games, but also for web browsing, YouTube and Streaming (no local media as the 11GB free storage is ridicolous) and thats about it. I sometimes use my laptop (13") to watch movies and TV-shows but in bed i find the tablet more enjoyable for that)

Hmm, when I have both my tablet and phone beside me, I will never pick up my phone. I mean, why would you prefer to read anything on your phone rather than your tablet?
i sold my chromebook and nexus 4. bought a nokia 515 (feature phone) and the nexus 9.
mostly leave the tablet at the house.
i use it for:
comic books (device is perfect for this!)
games (boombeach, madden, etc)
nba league pass
carbon poker
I use it to do my internet surfing at home. Its much more convienient than messing with my laptop just to quickly check something out. Right now I'm at work using my nexus 5 as a hotspot to surf the net on my nexus 9 (don't tell the boss ). I can't stand a lot of the mobile-optimized sites, so unless I am only with my phone, I use the tablet to view the desktop versions. I also play games and keep notes. I also use it for my music playing needs a lot of the time. I use Chordbot Pro to write music on it. That would be difficult on a phone screen.
I use mine to move questions to the Q&A section all day. ?

BTW.... My N7 is getting rusty. I think I'll be getting an N9. Not impressed with Samsung. My daughters Tab 3 is terrible. ?

It's a good device Darth. I'm a little disappointed with its lack of popularity and support. But I enjoy the device a lot. I use mine mostly for browsing, xda mostly, and use it for work where I use it while traveling so I don't have to lug a laptop around.

So I actually use my for working out when I am following a program. I am currently doing Body Beast (no laughing) and ripped the videos onto my Nexus 9. That and my Jaybird Blue Budz and I have my own little private training session .

Lol, yeah, just what you need, another device to keep you busy on xda My wife is still trying to come to terms with my hobby here. I'm tech savvy and she's not. It's an alien world to most "normal" people. But I love it! Love learning new things and helping others.

I'd love to see a distribution of the ages of posters, in general, but particularly on this thread!! Just a quartile say, by 10 year segments. I'm in the >70; my use is primarily listening to the radio at night (poor sleeper) and mail. I find it handy for checking facts while listening/watching/reading.

this is a great device.
other great tablets are the galaxy tab s 10.5 or the z3 tab compact
they are just a bit pricier however

I thought about either Asus Transformer or Galaxy 10'
- fast browser with flash, youtube, facebook
- skype with video
- avi, mp4 etc playback ( I dont want to convert files, I want to play them stright
after downloading)
- easy data transfer from my PC
- GPS navigation (copilot, igo etc) without using data
- some games working like : moshi monsters and android stuff (I ve got Galaxy 2)
Do I need a custom ROM for all above options?
Please share your thoughts, I ve got 2 weeks to make the decision.

My thoughts? especially if you are into video thingy (and you don't want to convert it), forget honeycomb tablets. Just buy Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 or HTC Flyer instead.. they run every and everything smooth and stable !
Is the tab just for him? Not trying to be rude, but I can't understand why a 9 year old needs a tab. Wants yes (mine does) but not need.
My oldest is 10 and he has a mid-range laptop. He gets some use for school, but mostly he uses it for playing games. I can control to an extent what he sees and does while surfing, and at the least keep close tabs on what he does online. I wouldn't think that's possible with a tab.

No. No 10" tablet has the right price/durability ratio for a 9-year-old kid.
Too expensive and too easy to break. Cheap netbook is the solution for kids - more durable, far cheaper.

- easy data transfer from my PC Depends. Who's doing the transfer, you or him? It's easy to use File Manager HD and connect to a LAN share and then Copy/Paste to the Tab. That's how I get the mp4 files to the Tab. Easy for you, might be tougher for him.
- GPS navigation (copilot, igo etc) without using data YES. It's a very, very nice GPS device.
- some games working like : moshi monsters and android stuff (I ve got Galaxy 2) YES
Do I need a custom ROM for all above options? NO, mine is stock, unrooted.
Please share your thoughts, I ve got 2 weeks to make the decision. TAB is the top of the food chain and most expensive. If budget isn't an issue then go for it.

One caveat: Unlike the iPad no password entry is required when making a purchase in the market. DO NOT have a credit card number in his Google account. That way he can't purchase apps or make in-app purchases without typing in a credit card number.

+1. Make sure you get a warranty with accidental damage. I'm sure your kid is great, but it takes only one drop to ruin these things.
Have you ever used a tablet? It's not the same as a PC. Many things still don't work. One of your requirements is that video work without transcoding. You're not going to get that from a tablet (I use three seperate video programs because some work for some files, and some files just need to be transcoded. It's hit or miss). I don't believe there is a data-free gps solution just yet (someone correct me if I'm wrong). The "fast" browser is still buggy, and pressing buttons or drop down menus can still be a problem. Finally, for a 9-year-old kid there isn't much in the way of parental controls for android yet. If he can use google, he's going to find all kinds of interesting content...
My advice would be the same: get him a cheap netbook. If you really want him to have a tablet, get one of the smaller lighter ones (7") or at least one of the burlier ones (like the iconia or the xoom) so it can take a short drop. There are a lot of smaller lighter choices from china; build quality sucks but they cost less than half this much and have much of the same functionality. The GT10 is very thin (which is why I like it), but it is also far more likely to be damaged by a short fall or a wrong step. At least go to the store and have the kid play around with one for a few minutes, see if he can find his way around it without help (or you will become tech support...).
Good luck! Please post back your experiences. Many of us will be interested in how your kid takes to a tablet computer.
Find out what your kid wants the tablet for games etc or just surfing the net my son is 14 bought him a iPad for xmass never plays it he just wanted it for hell of it

GPS/Navigation without data
Is that really possible? I tried to open up maps/google nav without being connected to wifi and got a pop up stating I needed a data connection to use the app. Since then I have pre-cached certain areas on maps but as far as turn by turn directions doesn't that need data?
Let me put it this way, my son is 4 years old. I let him play with my iPad and my SGT 7", and he does just fine with them, he's gentle, and treats them with care. He can navigate through them like nobody's business. He'd probably be fine using my SGT 10.1, but I won't let him mess with it simply because it's not as rigid (tough) as the other two, and accidents can happen. If you do end up getting your son an SGT 10.1, I suggest getting a rugged case for it like an Otterbox. (though that defeats the form-factor if you're getting it for thinness)

If there is one thing that i will say for the apple ipad2 it is that they are for kids and old people. If its for your 9 year old son, i would deffinately get him an ipad. But if you need things like flash then i would go for a netbook. There are many good options, small form factor, things like that.

Galaxy TAB.. NO NO NOT for a 9 year old unless you have an otterbox defender case which will never be realease. Otterbox had a press statement that said they will not be producing any otterbox accessores for the Samsung Galaxy tab 10.1. (a bummer I know)
Now my 4 Year old daughter has an ipad 1 encased in the otterbox defender series case. I have all types of books and learning apps on there for her and she loves it. Even have her movies on it (64GB Ipad 1 3G & Wi-fi) sure we don't use the 3G but I only paid $300 for it on ebay. I must also state that while I think children should get used to these things early my daughter is not your average 4 year old. She actually reads on a 2nd grade level. I think the IPAD 1 should be considered you can get one cheap on Ebay or CraigsList. I don't like apple's locked down devices however I couldn't find nearly as many Educational apps (formatted for tablets).. just my 2 cents. I am by no means an apple fanboy. I have the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and I have the Nook Color.. My wife uses the Xoom.
I am receiving my prime tomorrow, and was just curious what people have found they use their prime for. I have had a couple tablets in the past, but nothing like the prime - especially considering the dock. I was hoping it would be a laptop replacement in some situations (between classes and traveling for work) as well as a fun gaming device. So I'm curious, have you found that you use it as a laptop replacement or mainly as a toy? Anything else?
I also planned with all the hype surrounding the prime it would receive some good development efforts. I can't resist a shiny, rootable toy.

So far many have found it to be an excellent paper weight. Good luck on yours might want to rub a 4 leaf clover before you open it.

Seriously though, thanks for the posts. My class on Tuesday doesn't allow laptops, so I'm looking forward to having the prime (without the dock of course).
I am a student so main use is to take notes and read (I use ebook textbooks and pdf lecture notes mostly)
Otherwise I use for web browsing, music, movies (hdmi out to tv when at home), casual reading (big grisham fan), hulu, games, skype.

I use mine to browse the web in bed a lot. It works really nice because the screen can get really dim, which helps put me to sleep at night. It's also nice being able to wake up and have a web browser at your side without having to get up or anything.
I plan on using it for watching movies/tv while in my bed as well. It isn't as fun to watch them on my desktop since my monitor is usually hard to see from my bed.
Of course I use it to game in between my classes and whatnot.
I also plan on using it to take notes in class, but I haven't yet since mine has the rebooting issue, I don't want it to crash on me in class and have me lose all of my stuff and then not be able to take notes while it turns back on.

Can I get a job where you work?..
I pretty much use mine as a replacement for my laptop. I have a desktop that I rarely use and previously brought home my MacBook Pro from work every night to surf the web from my couch. Now I don't have to lug the laptop back and forth anymore. This was only part of the reason I got it though, the other being that it was a bad ass gadget and I just wanted it. I'm really looking forward to traveling with it next week as well, the size and light weight will be great. The gaming has been a great plus too.

Hate to go off-topic, but ever look at a Livescribe Echo Smartpen. I'm a Project Manager, and it's prob one of the best investments I made recently. I always miss stuff being said while taking down notes, with the pen recording as I write, brilliant. I can go back and review meetings.

What emulator are you using for the N64 stuff? I tried one before and it didn't work.

Are you using CourseSmart? I bludgeoned my way through last semester using their terrible v1.0 app that was never updated for tablets. They've since released a mobile web app that I assume is their solution for Android.
Still doesn't make me super jealous of their iPad app though..

I've actually been a bit surprised to find that half or so of my MBA classes prefer to not have laptops out. This is only the second class that appears to actually be enforcing that preference, however. This particular class is in marketing.

I'm semi familiar with the technology, but the last time I briefly looked into it the technology wasn't at the point where it was practical (or cost effective). The product you referenced looks very interesting, however. I am a product manager in a tech company so I could see how that would be useful. I'll probably look into it more. Thanks.

I can't imagine taking a full class worth of notes on a soft keyboard...
I am debating on purchasing a tablet with a keyboard for school. Solely to use in class. I could use my smartphone while on the go, and my laptop for when I am in a dedicated studying area.
Does anyone else own all three devices? I was hoping someone could enlighten me about how using all three could be beneficial, or if a laptop would suffice?

Tablets are great to have on the family room table to browse while you watch TV but pretty useless when it comes to getting real school work done. Take the laptop to class. The phone is just that, a phone. Occasionally it comes in handy as USB mass storage if you are short a thumb drive or to give your laptop a good internet connection if the schools wifi signal is weak.

Having all 3 is great. I've got my phone when on the go. Tablet when Im chillin at home or in a crowd, and laptop when doing hardcore research and in need of USB ports and such.

Get the note 10.1 as your tablet. I experimented this last semester with using just my note for taking notes in class using smemo, and while the functionality was awesome being able to use Swype for text entry and the pen for equations and diagrams/sketches all in one document, the larger screen of the note 10.1 would be a great tool and make note taking flawless.

I got all three I barely touch my tablet anymore the note covers for the large gaming/browsing screen and the laptop covers everything else I need I don't think the tablets necessary but it's still nice to have

Ill tell you what. Ever since I got my note I barley use my laptop- even in school I use my note with my Bluetooth keypad and take notes via Google drive so i have it on cloud storage.
Sometimes I even write essays on it like a bau5 -
I only use my laptop now for like heavy Java and flash things that really don work on the note

I typically use my Note for just about everything except gaming.
Ray, mind mentioning which Bluetooth keypad you are using?
Honestly...phablet (phone+tablet) and a laptop will be great for school. So go with a Galaxy Note or Note 2 and a laptop if you can afford it.

My wife has the kindle fire, I have the nexus 7, my 5 year old son has a trio tablet. Tablets for us are nothing more but toys, something solely for entertainment purposes and occasional skype, google talk. I'm a software developer so I need my laptop on the go and my PC at home. Although I'm seeing my note replacing the tablet.
Ever since I got my note. The fiancée uses the tablet more. I only time I use the tablet is to update apps. Laptop is use for other things the note can't do.

If you can only get one, get a laptop. No exceptions. A tablet is primarily a consumption device, a laptop lets you a lot more. Any school-specific software (office, photoshop, design apps, programming apps, compilers, web development, 3d modelling, etc...) is likely Windows (or Win/Mac/Linux) only. A tablet alone won't cut it.
Made my way through college (computer engineering) without a smartphone as well, had a laptop, desktop, tablet, and a mini-tablet (Android mp3 player) but just a basic prepaid phone. There's wireless everywhere on most college campuses, so you won't need a smartphone. Only bought my Note in May after graduation.
If you need high performance for school or gaming, I'd even recommend a nice custom desktop and a cheap netbook, you can always remote in to the desktop from the laptop.

Side question. Do you think computer engineering major is suck, i do. I might not a smart student. However i just gained a lil knowledge from computer engineering major after got my BS(B****) degree. I wish i can go to Computer Science instead.

I guess it really depends on what you want to do. My first 2 degrees are in computer science. I have a friend who did computer engineering but we have totally different jobs. I run a training datacenter and he designs chips for Intel. I like my job better and he likes his better.

I was going to buy another tablet, like a prime with the keyboard dock, but when I saw that, I decided to wait. Our phones are powerhouses and that would be just freaking cool to have.
a lot of people here mentioned they don't use their tablets anymore and I'm one of them which is another reason why I haven't pulled the trigger on a prime. My Note covers almost everything I want to do on it. when at home I run my media center, RDP into my server for upgrades, drive my boxee box. Heck if I could find a universal IR controller that allowed me to do so via wifi I'd get rid of my universal remote. This phone is just sweet, it's big enough to play games on and small enough not to feel like a burden.
I own all three. Skip the tablet. Get a laptop and phablet.
You can choose according to your budget and needs.
1. Galaxy note 10.1 + desktop.
2. Note 2 + Surface pro.
3. Laptop + S3.
4. Note + (high end) desktop.

Yeah no worries!
I use the ps3 Bluetooth keypad. I'm sure there are better ones but its small- hooks onto things (like my steering wheel) and has a mouse function!
Its also like $20 on amazon and its a nice Sony product. Also the battery lasts like forever maybe 3 weeks idk maybe more I never actually drained it!

Computer engineering? I loved it! I love low-level software as well as digital electronics hardware, and CompE is basically a low-level CS and digital systems EE combination. Great for people like me who prefer discrete/binary math to complex, real-valued math that you face in upper-level CS.

Alright, I'm stuck in a predicament and I want the opinion of people who know a lot about the S3 and it's longevity.
I own a galaxy S3-SGH-i747 on att and I'm loving it. Basically, my friend wants to trade his brand new iPhone 5 for my s3 (don't stop reading here haha). The thing is, I'm planning on getting the nexus 7 when the next update happens (I'm guessing it will be after april of this year). Do you guys think its worthwhile to switch with him? I'm planning on using the nexus 7 as my android replacement to watch videos and read books on. Basically I really love the music player on iOS (I've owned an iPhone 4 before, and I'm really disappointed with almost all android music players) as well as the insane stability of iOS, portability of the phone (I'm a big commuter, I travel all day) and the app selection. However I'm also a bit hesitant to switch over because I love the file managing, memory expansion slot, screen size and the free-ness of android. So I want your guys opinion on whether I should stick with my s3 or get the iPhone 5 (I'm stuck with this decision for 2 years since I recently got the S3 also D.
A bit about me: I go to college so I'm constantly walking and commuting to places, I use my phone as a music player always; even at the gym, I do enjoy playing a bunch of games on my phone, I watch videos on my phone a lot, I web browse when I have to look something up usually.
[I'm a bit worried because I probably won't use my s3 to watch videos anymore after I get my tablet and that I'll have a huge phone with a mediocre music player when I could have a smaller phone that I could use instead. However my old iPhone had such a small screen I found it very un-joyable.]

Thanks for your input I think I will switch, but im gonna miss my s3 haha. Android is definetly the superior operating system.
I bought the Nexus 10 32GB out of curiosity last week, unlocked it and installed AOKP And all the goodies, but now I ended up not even thinking about using it for anything.
I have been using the HTC DNA since it was released, so I wasn't impressed by the N10's screen quality but not disappointed either. For the first few hours, I thought it would replace my laptop but I found myself using my ASUS Zenbook more so than N10 or the DNA. It's not because the N10 Doesn't have any practical utilities, but rather because my laptop do things far more better. Also, I just can't figure out how to comfortably hold the tablet. I thought of buying a case with a built-in stand, but I figured that it would be more convenient to just carry my laptop around instead.
So I'm about to sell my N10 but I just wanted to know how you guys utilize it before I do.

ehhh that's based on your usage really I like to go out and travel a lot, I'm an amateur photographer and i also do vfx stuffs so my laptop is pretty bulky. I only use it when I have to. Other than that when I go out for coffee or photo day I usually carry my nexus 10 and otg usb so I could view them in a bigger screen and sort out what I don't need or need. I also use my nex during relax for youtube, web surfing...etc, I also found myself using it for a recipe in cooking lol :silly: and yes it is not as practical as a laptop but I use it because of portability. But maybe it's not for you since you have the Zenbook :silly:
In addition to checking bookmarked news sites and social networks, I use the kindle and comixology apps (the latter mainly for marvel comics). For reading, I find the N10 superior to a laptop, and for web it's most of the time only slightly inferior (except when you're thrown into an ugly mobile site designed for 3" screens).
As for holding it, I slouch with my feet on the table and find I can keep the N10 at a usable angle and distance by dropping it in my lap. You may want to experiment with various couches/tables to find your ideal position
I'm a unix system administrator by profession, and I wouldn't ever consider using the N10 for work. I still have my cheapo laptop with linux for when I need to work from home.
I use my Nexus 10 for a variety of things, but mainly for reading, gaming, communication through apps like Hangouts, Voxer, and others, and study. I use EZPDF for annotation, best annotator out there. I also use it for music, since the speakers are quite loud. I also use it to time my efforts in volunteer work and record any necessary information (Ministry Assistant), and more. I've been trying to find more uses for it myself, I've only owned it for a week now. Best Android tablet I've used, for sure!

I use it with my hands and fingers.
I found that whenever I owned a laptop it would always sit in one place plugged in constantly. I now stick with a more powerful and more reliable desktop and have a Nexus for when I go out and about since they're much more portable.
I'm at university studying computer science. I use it all the time to type notes and read pdf versions of the numerous textbooks I need, so saves a huge amount of space and weight in my bag. I also use it a lot for the web, like if I'm on a site that requires a lot of reading, I'll often load it up on my tablet even if I'm on it on my laptop just to read it, just because the screen is so much easier to read off for me than my laptops. I use my n10 a lot and it's possibly the best thing I have bought in years, the 10 inch tab fits in my life perfectly. Although I am used to the 10 inch form factor as I had the galaxy tab 10.1 for a year before I got the nexus 10 and 7.
I also have the nexus 4 and the nexus 7. The nexus 7 I mainly use as a ebook reader, to play some games that are awkward on a 4.7 and 10.05 inch screen. Also use it a lot between the large amount of time it takes to charge my n10 up
I do the same as the person above. Also use it for reading books in general, my friends steal it to play games, and it's useful for long car rides even without internet.
Only problem is, is that I am too lazy to figure out how to compile my programming assignments on my Nexus 10 :/

Mighty Text. Its even notify you when someone is calling.
I generally don't really use mine at home unless my Desktop is in some kind of inoperable state (I used my N10 earlier to look up some info on a few BIOS settings for my Desktop). If I hear a notification go off, I usually go to my N4, or just minimize the game I'm playing on my Desktop and check Gmail.
I'd love to get some more use out of my N10, just need to figure out how... lol
I use it to play games. test out different ROMs. for skype/chatting when I am playing a game on my desktop. browsing the web. Sometimes watch youtube videos when I am away from desktop. listen to music.
Thanks for Mighty Text. Also what's the best combo to use it as a streaming player of my files on my computer? I wanna use it as a player and make my computer the "server".

I gave up my PC when I bought my nexus 10 so I use it for everything. Most days I just use it for the basic email, news (while on the toilet ), calendar, phone. I have a galaxy nexus but when I'm home I usually just use hangouts,Facebook, or Skype for calls off my tablet.
Its also my Netflix, hooked up to a TV. I went through 3 HDMI cables before I found one that worked on the nexus 10. For some reason it's picky.
Torrents, I have a wifi external HD I use to back things up.
I really want to add a Bluetooth speaker but I spent too much money on my Bose back when I had iPhone 3gs. Now I have to suffer with it.
GPS in the car, tethered to my phone (NFC tag). Gaming, though obviously its far from what my PC was.

Everything! Watching movies, reading emails, social media sites. For editing and sharing pictures and videos. It pretty much replaced a laptop and a desktop.
Web browsing when I'm outside in the backyard smoking or grilling, occasional games, netflix in bed, etc. I should probably use it more for how much I paid for it, but I love it as a tablet. After having a HORRIBLE experience with a TF300t it's perfect for me. No lags unless the app I'm using is laggy on all devices.
Mostly reading (news, books, comics, pocket) I also have a Zenbook but for reading the N10 is far better.
