Unrooted yet Lollipop coming, adhoc patching, usb hardwire tethering other androids - Xperia Z2 Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Have we gotten to the point where the Android tools in general use are available for a capable android computer, like say a Z2 tablet or one of several Galaxy phones just to name a few?
My Z2 has 23.0.1.A.4.44 which I understand is not rootable. At the same time the Lollipop update is supposed to be just any time now. Should I root it now or wait and see what happens after the update, which I'll assume will be nothing to make it easier to root. Any suggestions as what to do? Root now and see if it will update and keep root or just wait? I can hardly stand the idea of this not being rooted.
Has anyone had any luck making a Z2 connect to adhoc wifi? I've studied the OLSRD patch and a few other methods and I'm a bit unsure about which method would be best and easiest. In fact, I have several devices I'd like to be able to connect to a simple adhoc wifi.
If anyone can point me to a ground level and upwards networking tutorial that doesn't carry a person too fast that is slow in that department, I'd appreciate it. I know the WLAN on most all of my androids tested will see adhoc wifi but the wpa supplicant thing seems to be the problem that google has ignored to the point they say it's now moot. I wish I could say I agreed.
Going further, if I make a usb micro to micro cable to connect these various devices, would it even be possible to hard wire tether the Z2 (and/or) other various android devices that way?
The only cables similar I can find are micro a to micro b and they are mostly called OTG. My understanding is that the Z2 will accept a or b and so will some of my samsung handhelds. I don't guess I know for sure.
Have we gotten to the point that hard wiring androids to each other would ever be of benefit? The wifi direct, near devices and NFC beam things on my devices equipped seem hit or miss at best if not inexplicably inoperative. Can you wirelessly one click root an android or flash a rom?
Please pardon my ignorance and thank you for your tolerance. I'd like my android world to be easier and more logical when it comes to simple things and it would be nice not to need a windows PC to tinker with my androids.

Ad-hoc WIFI is supported via WIFI DIRECT, look under Settings > WIFI > Advanced > WIFI DIRECT
Advanced is the 3-dot menu in the top-right corner of the screen.

Yeah support seem to be a hit and miss thing.
And as far as I you can not root a phone wirelessly.

I don't see that wifi direct is the same as actual adhoc. I have no less than 5 wifi direct devices, not all activated, and in the case of my spg512 cannot be activated, and it doesn't seem to work on any of them.
However, my pc's have zero problem seeing and connecting to the wpa supplicant skipped broadcasted wifi from my rooted s4 via barnacle.
Turning that off and trying the wifi direct with the same s4 and any other of my devices, gets nothing. None of these devices have any problem hooking up to starbucks or hotel wifi.

I have to wonder also if the infrared on the devices so equipped could be made to transfer data like a nearly 10 year old windows mobile phone can.
I must be doing something wrong or have many broken devices because the ones I can get to pair, all fail to transfer files to each other.
Of course the wifi direct sure isn't going to tether any of them to the internet.

How Can I Use 3G USB Modem with Tablet s?

is there any one know?
I have huawei E170 3G modem and disable flashdrive mod. I disabled with DC-Unlocker client
But Tablet S did not recognize the 3g modem (Unsupported USB Device Connect)
Please Developer Friends Help me.
Thank You

Here you've got some info. Unfortunately you will have to wait for a root solution.
yes I tried some posts but nothing else
Yes we are waiting developers friends
Tried it using an aircard but android only picks up the usb stick.
I dont know if it actually help but I saw this on tech republic when they open the tablet.
3G-ready motherboard and case: Sony left an open spot on the motherboard and inside the case for a 3G or 4G card. The internal mounting bracket even has screw holes for it.
Dont know if it is possible to add an internal modem or install driver for that.

At least worked for me. It disables other functions of USB 3G sticks and leave them to be acting only as 3G modem, which then tablet recognizes.
Is there anything new? I have got rooted ICS on my tablet. Is it possible to use 3G USB Modem on my tablet? I have got 2 USB-Modems. The first is ZTE K3565-Z and the second is Option 4G Systems XS Stick P14. Is there a solution?

If darkjesus's method didn't work, then I'm not sure anything will. These modems are not easy to work on a lighter system like Android.
I'm happy to be proven wrong, of course.
In a german forum, i found an app called "UMTS Manager". With this app you can connect with 3G Networks with some Huawei-Sticks and maybe some other devices, too. They use mode-switch to switch device mode to modem only and then it works for them. Here's the link:
http://www.android-hilfe.de/asus-ee...-stick-zum-laufen-kriegen-17.html#post3236187
Of course, a lot of pages But some of them got ZTE K3565-Z working. For me it doensn't. Maybe we can find a solution
I found the reason, why it does not work on Tablet S. Our Tablet does not create ttyUSB*-devices when attaching 3G Modem to the Tablet. Normally it creates ttyUSB*-devices, attaches the Modem there and you are able to connect. I think it's a kernel issue or Sony modified the kernel. But with Custom Rom and Kernel which has got this "feature" it is possible to connect via 3G Modem. Maybe one of us could create this custom Rom..
So how?
Hi there friends
So any tablet s user here found a way to use 3G on this tablet?
About a year...is this question solved? I just bought sony tablet s 32gb wifi and of course hoping usb modem work

You will have better success looking for a portable 3G-to-WiFi hotspot device. Not only will you not have to worry about installing USB modem drivers, the device will work with a non-rooted tablet. Also, if you have a 3G smart phone, look into WiFi tethering.

[Q] How to get USB tethering between an android 3G device and Sony Tablet S to work?

Hi,
Has anyone tried and had any success with USB tethering a 3G android device (let's say an HTC android phone) and the Sony Tablet S? Are there apps or kernel modules that are needed for this? I'm hoping to cut down on the battery drain on both devices by turning off the wi-fi radios and just using USB. I'm having trouble loading the mii.ko and usbnet.ko modules, though the rndis_host.ko module is loading ok.
Thanks,
A
No. Would need drivers and all sorts of troubles. Try wifi teethering or bluetooth. Wifi works good for me
Ok, that may be so, but I'd like to know if anybody has tried and succeeded, or if not could point me in the right direction. I'm not adverse to troubles and drivers, I'm adverse to inefficiencies. I've used wifi tethering and it consumes too much power on both devices. The resources (i.e. usb on-the-go) are available and we might as well put them to use, right?

Good plan, but at the same time you will find that the Tablet is charging your phone.... LOL i do it all the time. Check in the dev section, but still don't have many devs. Maybe with the (hopeful) growth in sales of the Xperia Tab S we will se more 'action' here.

Micro USB to HDMI cable ?

I've been toying with the idea of getting a micro USB cable with the other end being an HDMI to connect to my computer monitor or TV for easy plug and play. I see there are several versions of cables. Some have 2 ends (Micro/HDMI), while others have 3 ends (Micro/USB/HDMI). I presume the 3 end with the USB is for charging.
Does anyone currently use one for the Nexus 6 that is working that they recommend ? Does it matter if I buy one without the USB end ? Thanks
Sadly, the Nexus 6 does not support HDMI out. Those cables you've come across are for other devices.
To answer your question: often, the ones with three ends need to be plugged into a USB charger to work because there is circuitry requiring power inside the cable - in my experience, these cables do not charge the phone despite requiring the power brick.

The way people get around it is using a chromecast. If you feel it's worth the investment you could do that.

I'm really not completely clear on that. From my understanding it needs to at least be connected to a hotspot off your phone but, I am unsure if it requires internet. I don't personally own one so I'm not sure, sorry man.
You can hotspot from your cell but it eats up data pretty good and you can't hotspot and stream at the same time so you'd have to have 2 devices one to hotspot an one to stream but it works keeping in mind it won't be the fastest most reliable.... But in my opinion a chromecast is a pretty good investment....

This doesn't sound right...
If he has no access to internet, and wants to stream from his phone to his chromecast he is likely wanting to stream local data to it, and that shouldn't use any data from his cell plan as it would basically be local connection just using the phones access point instead of having a router in between.
You can definitely run a hot spot and network with devices connected to it locally. You can run hotspot and turn off your data to just create a local network.
Not sure why you are saying he would need two devices? Not sure why you would say it would eat any more data, it wouldn't use any more data to cast netflix to his monitor then it would to stream netflix in the first place on his phone?

Pretty sure he means if you want to use primary phone as hotspot, you need a second device to do the casting. As far as data connection, I'm reasonably certain that chromecast uses desktop style data, not mobile data. Meaning, it uses more data then directly on the phone, as the phone becomes a remote, not the actual device that does the streaming.
Hope that makes sense.
Thanks for the info everyone. I'm going to pick up a chromecast however I will just have to make sure when I use it I have a WiFi connection as well. I wasn't sure if you could only use the phone as a Hotspot and that's it
I'm pretty sure you can... The cromecast stuff just looks for a Chromecast on your local network, I'm not sure why people think your phone wouldn't be on its own network.
Never tried it with a Chromecast, but I have ran other local network stuff by attaching to my phones hotspot.
Give it a try when you get it and post back here to let us know, because I don't think any of us ACTUALLY know, but I am almost positive it will work.
I have a chromecast but I've never gotten it working without connecting to a seperate wifi source (not my phone's hotspot) but it could very well be possible.
I do want to comment that with the chromecast being wireless, some people might experience some lag. My solution this was to buy a wired adapter for the chromecast in addition to a micro usb to ethernet that worked with my phone. Both ethernet cables hook into my router and I can effectively mirror my device wired. Obviously there is probably still some lag, but is now below the threshold that I can perceive.
I have tried this you either need two devices or WiFi.

For some reason it will not recognize the phone as a local network or router

Reverse Tethering on T-820 (Option not available)

I want to be able to plug my new Galaxy Tab S3 (T-820) into my desktop computer or laptop via the USB C cable and not just move files back and forth, (which works fine), but ALSO have access to my desktop's internet connection through USB. I don't want to use WiFi.
I have an Ethernet to USB C dongle, which works fine, but it doesn't allow me to share files or charge my tablet. I'd like to be able to do all three at the same time.
In many of the "How To" articles out there where "Reverse Tethering" is described, they helpfully list the various buttons and widgets to click in order to enable this feature. However the authors always refer to menu items and buttons which don't appear under my tablet's settings. They're not just greyed out. They're simply absent. So that doesn't work.
Neither do any of the various apps on the Google Play Store and elsewhere which promise to provide reverse tethering. They just don't work.
SO...
Being new to the Android (and the smartphone) universe, I did a ton of homework and have so far figured out how to...
Root my tablet. (Done!)
Wade through the swamp of TWRP, ODIN, etc., while tripping spectacularly over the various speed bumps and permission walls provided by the likes of Samsung and Google's paranoid anti-theft (and it would seem from my use case, their anti-happiness) feature set.
Successfully install different flavors of Android.
Install both Magisk and Xposed and try their tethering unlockers with negative results.
After a week of little sleep, I've managed to get through all of this torturous nonsense and amaze myself by not having bricked or totally spoiled my tablet. It still functions! After all the warranty-voiding BS I've crammed through it, I'm feeling quite lucky.
However... I still don't have the ability to tether/reverse tether!
I've learned a lot, but I still feel mostly like a dazed and confused script kiddie (remember when 'script kiddie' was a term? Well for me, it still applies nicely.) I'm trying my level best, but various elements of this whole exercise remain opaque. This is my first post in any forum asking for advice because I finally hit the outer bounds of my DIY energies and pride.
So, if you will indulge my humble request, what I want to know is...
1. Is my tablet even capable on a hardware level of performing a reverse tether, or has the manufacturer locked that feature out so that even a ROM which promises to turn it on will fail to do so?
AND...
2. If it IS possible for a ROM to turn on the tether/reverse tether feature, which one is it and where can I find it?
2a. If there is another solution.., what is it?
I'm currently on...
Android Version 8.0.0
Samsung Experience version 9.0
Kernel Version 3.18.71-13482624
Build Number R16NW.T820XXU1BRE2
I bought this unit off Amazon; it was a refurb and I didn't get it through some cellular provider nor do I have a phone plan. I don't know where this tablet originally came from, but it was all new, sealed and shiny in the box when I got it.
Thanks!
I can appreciate losing a week of sleep. But I don't understand why you need to reverse tether. Enable WiFi and there you go. I think the last time I needed to tether a device through my laptop's internet connection would have been the 1990s.
FWIW the USB-C connector on the TAB S3 is different because if you want to drive an HDMI monitor you need a DisplayLink chip enabled dongle and DisplayLink Presenter app running on the Tab S3. Whereas on my TAB S4 I can just plug any regular old USB-C -> HDMI dongle and display on the monitor. So odds are trying to get reverse tethering working on the Tab S3 is going to be an exercise in futility.

What...? It worked?! Thank-you!
It's hard to believe how much effort and research I'd put into this, how many promising fixes I tried and which failed. In truth I'd given up weeks ago and found myself scornfully looking at the expensive tablet by my desk, wondering if I should hang on to it for its limited uses or sell it on eBay.
Thanks for posting! I can now do what I wanted with this machine.
For others, just follow the directions on the github link provided in the previous post.
I just scrolling around to find fixes for wifi issue - it connect & reconnect every times when on my office connection. Since me unable to use wifi, i try to find the work around using LAN connection. Then i found that.
Happy i can help others. Cheers mate.

Need help Connecting to a WEP WiFi.

Hey all. So I bought a couple of cheap knock off go pros to use for recording various things and the problem I'm having is that I cannot connect to the wifi signal it broadcasts.
The camera puts out a WEP encrypted wifi network which I can only even pick up by putting my device into airplane mode and turning on the wifi radio only. Even when I can find the SSID, it won't stay connected long enough to work. It basically drops the signal immediately.
I have tuned off all the auto connect and disconnect options in advanced wifi and yet it still won't hold the connection.
Anyone have any thoughts on how I can get this to work?
Side note: I have successfully connected to it from a Samsung S7. So I know it can work, just not from my V30
Anyone??
Disable encryption and run it wide open... WEP is a dead protocol and has many problems. It's ridiculously easy to crack, so you might as well just leave it open.
I'm guessing the device can't run simultaneous connections anyway, so if you can connect, you're probably the only device in there anyway. If you're using it as a remote camera, your client will probably always be connected anyway, so you've occupied that one connect port as well.
@schwinn8 Thank you for trying to help me out with this here, however I'm not able to do what your suggesting.
This camera won't let me ditch the password and run it open (why?, I have no idea) I'm really at a loss for why it's not connecting/will stay connected. I have now tried an iPhone, a Samsung, and my older LG G5 and all of these could connect to it with no issue.
I'm due for a full reset on my device, so I'm going to try and see if maybe a clean install allows it to work. (Maybe a module is making it act screwy). I've also lost my Hotpsot capabilities no matter what apns I run and no matter what tether settings I change in the global settings tables. (I actually have hotspot on my plan but it's never worked without me modding settings / apns)
Side note, if anyone is looking for cheap gopro alternative, the one I got is similar to this one, and it was on sale for 17.99 Great features for the price (car mode, wifi control, motion detector, etc) and uses all of the same accessories as a regular gopro. I actually bought 3 so when i lose one or break one I have a back up.

Like I said, WEP is a dead protocol, so it makes sense that older phones would work better, since these protocols are not focused on for modern devices. It's like how a Windows 95 program would probably run great on an old Wiin95 computer, but it may not work at all on Win10.
Sure, the device SHOULD be backwards compatible, but no one is going to bother fixing them.
