Hello all, I hope I'm posting in the right section.
I've been searching for info on the battery drain problem for some time now. I have used GSam and System Panel to find the culprit and observe it for a while and I think I see what is happening. Don't know if there is anything to be done but I'm hoping there is a fix out there.
Background:
Stock Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4, stock Rom on latest OTA update (screen shot attached)
One morning around Christmas time my phone drained the battery from full to 10% in about 5 hours. I had my phone in my pocket like every other day at work, I had noticed it was heating up as well. I got an error message at some point that morning about some kind of "Samsung Power Share" I had never heard of. Then I could not get the phone to charge unless powered off, and that very slowly; it was the "grey battery" problem. This problem persisted for several days and then turned intermittent then nearly back to normal, though never quite right.
What I've done:
Wipe cache, FDR, replaced USB charge port, replaced stock battery with Anker battery.
The new charge port dramatically improved recharge time and eliminated the grey battery error but I still have terrible battery life compared to earlier in this phone's life, in other words, compared to before the latest OTA which appears to be a disaster. Didn't notice any significant improvement with the new battery.
Here's what I've seen:
As soon as the battery drops below 50% the rate of discharge maxes out and this matches up almost exactly with the activity or CPU usage of the system process "krtccd." (See attached pics showing krtccd activity corresponding with increased battery drain below 50%). GSam shows the "Kernel Android OS" (in which is krtccd) using 50% of the battery where it used to be that the screen was the biggest drain, pic attached.
Is there any way to control "krtccd" as it seems to go rogue? Why does it only seem to go rogue when the battery gets below 50%?
This is a company owned phone so rooting is not an option unfortunately.

I apologize if this posted in the wrong part of the forum. I did do a lot of attaching for info on what the krtccd process does and why it changed so drastically with the last OTA update but I can't find much out there or in here. I don't have the option to root phone so am I such with this weird poor performance whenever the battery drops below 50%?

As a follow-up, here is a screen shot from System Panel this morning showing that "krtccd" stopped activity as soon as the battery began to charge. I don't get it, it's like it spins full bore in the background sabotaging the battery for the last 50%.
BTW, the discharge last night (in my first set of screen shots) happened while the phone dat idle on my windowsill, don't think I even turned the screen on during that whole time as I was in discussion with a friend. It's weird...

Ive noticed serious battery drain since I first bought this fascinate from telus. On 2.1it lasted around 11 hours. Since upgrading to 2.2 leak, id say 8 hoirs max with only approx 1 hour of uusage and the rest on standby. I turned of sync, auto brightnrss and turned brightndss as.low as possible. I make sure no apps r running in the background. Yet it still dies superfast. Is this a issue with my battery thr phone itself or firmware or kernal. Its been a week of trying to find the problem so any help would b greatly appreciated. At tgis time im running 2.2 leak with all the files it came with and no root. Thx in advNce

I update OTA last week on Verizon to Froyo 2.2. My battery was overheating and draining like crazy from my CPU usage being at a constant 99%..
I found the source of the problem. An app I use for facebook called "FLOW". The CPU usage was cut to 20% when I killed it with "Advanced Task Killer".
I resolved the issue by: Opening Flow.. going to Preferences.. Notification Settings.. Refresh Type.. Checked Periodic Polling (I was using Gmail Experimental previously)

sounds about average for a fascinate....
I'm on telus as well and also have terrible battery life, I've found no fix other than completely turning off Data using the toggle when holding the power button. Flashing a new rom might fix this but I've been to scared to since I bricked a phone trying it the first time. Hopefully when/if ever we get a 2.3 update it fixes this
Does anyone know where one can get an extended battery for this? I picked one up but it's for the friggin Verizon US version, and the battery cover isn't compatible, even though the battery fits(camera doesn't align, speaker's not even close).
Seriously, the American counterpart's accessories have been my biggest frustration with this phone, next to battery life...
Thought I'd give this a bump. The battery life on this Telus Fascinate 4G is truly disappointing and jumping through hoops trying to find and kill apps and services with and without utilities is wasting far too much of my time.
Anybody get a good handle on this?

Running unmodified and unrooted. The phone itself works perfect. No problems other than the phone seriously eats battery. Yes the battery is still good and nothing wrong with it. Plugged in it charges super slowly. And the screen itself takes more than it provides. So i did the following.
A. Changed battery to a known working one.
B. Check with car charger and a home charger. As well as official samsung charger.
C. Gave a ROM a try. Running Dirty Unicorn. Lowered cpu to 800 max and 100 min.
D. Turned display to 50% Brightness.
My only try now is to try a different kernel or something. Im also thinking that the display itself is the culprit somehow eating to much voltage.
Or the gpu. The phones operating temps are good.

So i am taking upon myself to learn more. Ive worked with 3 Droid Milestones. Hopefully these two i500s will not be to hard. I need help on this new i500 to see if its not the motherboard. The charging port is on the motherboard and if this replacement eats batteries , then the point would be mute to use it for a working USB. A conundrum.
Do i try a different kernel or somthing else. Whats my next step.. Please help.

what else do you have running?
what is the battery life overall usage? and screen usage hours?
screen is always gonna be the highest consumer of your battery
50% still pretty high unless you are out in sunlight, I keep mine between 0 and 30 % unless in sunlight
you can try running the greenify app from playstore.
what king of life are you expecting to get? anywhere between 6hrs to 24 hours total phone battery life is about average depending on how heavy user or how much in standby mode.

Its been on the charger since i posted. its only at 56%

Its defiantly got something wrong as even though it says 56% if I unplug it, it will die in about 10 min. Even with a fully charged battery it does the same. Yes i also waited until 100% and wiped batt stats and at 3% left wiped stats. Screen is in standby

you can get better logs and information, plus if something is not easily visible to what is causing problems you can post up a log file for them to look at.

I had installed the program and it didn't really show anything abnormal. Although after installing the Bat Meter, when i shutdown it killed the phone till i ODIN. So tried on the other phone as well. Same thing. Install it and compared notes. Reboot phone and had to ODIN. So maybe bad app? Well whatever. I didn't see anything unusual. Although I did notice something strange about the phone that's bad with charging. I already eliminated the battery as the problem as well as charger. But the phone that is eating battery faster than it can charge, it gets warmer at idle than the other phone. It charged just super super tiny faster than the battery eats using just idle display on lock-screen. As well this phone also with a fully charged battery will read 100% But after about 21 minutes of poweramp at 33% volume on headphones will read about 52%. Then sitting rest at idle no display from 52% down to about 14% popup around another 5 min. Then completely dead in about 3 minutes. And the phone is pretty warm. Today it was ambient temp of around 87* outside and sitting in shade and it was hot enough that it wasn't comfortable on my cheek for more than 20 seconds. Half the time the temps are normal. Now remember I'm not running overclock and actually under clocked to 800. Ive tried 3 different roms with diff kernels and same. Could it possibly be a bad heat-sink? And the extra heat is killing battery?
[Q] Battery Drain
I recently was given a Fascinate and am having similar problems. I was told the phone had a bad battery, so I ordered a replacement. Once I got the new battery in, I flashed the phone with the Carbon ROM [the phone was unlocked, but running the OTA 2.3.5 I believe]. Everything seemed to be working fine the first week or two, but now there appears to be a serious battery drain or leak after I power the phone down. I can charge the phone to 100%, power it on and use it for a period of time, then power it down with 90% or more battery life, but when I turn the phone back on, the battery will either be really low, or completely dead, where the phone won't respond at all until I plug the charger back in.
I reflashed the phone with an AOKP ROM to see if that'd make a difference, but it didn't. I tried using the first battery and the drain/leak still persists. The commonality between the two roms is the Devil kernel, so I'm going to flash a different ROM with a different kernel to see if that makes a difference. I also installed the app mentioned above to log the battery stats/usage to see if anything stands out there.
Has anyone experienced something similiar - the Fascinate consuming battery life while powered off?
Yeah the power off leak does seem to exist.
Can't remember the cause though.
I've not tried to really confirm,, but try popping the battery out then back in after you have powered off,,, then check after it has sat overnight to see if drain still exist..
Mine i just always leave on a charger overnight.

Thanks for the reply. I'll try that. I've left the phone on today, just put it to sleep during periods of inactivity, and the battery is currently at 75% with occasional mild use after 8+ hours "on".

After almost two weeks of use, I can confirm that if I power the phone down and do nothing else, the battery will continue to drain to 0%. If I power the phone down then remove and replace the battery, it's fine. It's an extra step, but it works. Thanks again.

I got my galaxy s2 (international version) about 4 months ago. Recently I've noticed some weird battery drain mostly when I restart my phone, but it happens other times just out of the blue.
It might be a software bug not showing the proper battery level, but I've attached pictures that show normal battery drain even after that jump down. Obviously, if it was a a software fault the battery percentage should remain level or go up slightly. (Yes the battery level does go up a bit, but I lose significantly more battery than I gain.)
This has happened in many instances and I've only got a screenshot of two. Sometimes I get big discharge and at other times its small. It's pretty annoying when you think you've got enough battery and go out, only to find the phones dropped 20-30% out of nowhere.
My phone is unlocked and not branded (bought from carphone warehouse UK- CPW). It's running stock XXKI4 firmware (2.3.4) and I'm not rooted.

Battery drain is one one the main argouments you can find in this forums. ATM I'm in your same condition: after latets ROM ugrade (I've got latest CheckROM release), my phone "sucks" al lot more battery than before.
A lot of things could affect this: themes, skin, kernel, application bug, bad battery checking and so on. There isn't a valid answer... I think you must indagate on yourself, comparing what you find with forum's infos!!

There are several threads about battery drain.

Maybe you find a useful tip.
You have always test it on your phone under your conditions.
You can try to flash special (Custom) ROMs and kernels, which are optimized for better battery life, but as there are so many different influences on battery life, it is nearly impossible to find a general "fix" for all users and phones.

well at least yours lasts 15 hours, mine lasts at most 10 hours on heavy usage.
P.S. I am using 2.3.5
As to Anwser to those "drops" or "gaps" in the graph, just recently i noticed that my phone was working normally, i was monitoring its battery drain (i have a thread going on about it), and after some time of no using, after class, i noticed that my phone asks for my SIM PIN again, and is in Safe Mode (i dont really know what that it). When i checked the battery monitoring graph (battery info) i notice the absolutr same fall (from 70% to 40%), but i remember that i saw and used my phone at 60-50% too ! So i can only assume that the phone crashes, eighter reboots for some reason, and the data isnt saved (for example it saves the data every 2 hours or so), so there appears the "gap".
Thats simply my opinion, but i do remember using the phone at the % between the two extremes (IN the gap), so i guess the data wasnt saved.
EDIT: Ha! I'll add some pis now to show you guys this: so in my current history i have two gaps, one big, and one smaller before. So, the first time, i turned off the phone and PULLED OUT THE BATTERY aswell cause i wanted to check my batteries mAh (its 1650 but thats offtopic). Thats how the small gap appeared ! As for the big one, my phone seemed to crash and reboot while i didnt notice, because in an hour or so of no using i woke it up and it asked for the SIM PIN.
So there, i think the phone eighter crashes or doesnt manages to save the battery data, and those gaps ("falls") appear.

Me too ... it's driving me nuts.
I am experiencing this. My battery life is horrendous. Even when I barely touch the phone the battery drains extremely quickly. I have already rooted the phone with a few different roms with the battery setting "fix" to no avail. I'm on at&t. I have disabled wifi and gps. I have tried to use both the stock app killers and 3rd party ones recommended by these forums. My battery monitoring apps (both stock and 3rd party) consistently attribute the battery loss (always more than 90% of battery use) to an android system app. The android system app or file changes from day to day seemingly randomly. Files have included: UltaCfg, com.samsung.app.playreadyui and security storage.
Any help will be extremely* appreciated. I love the phone but it is nearly useless in this state.

I am draining my battery as quickly as I can (streaming Netflix through 4G LTE with max screen brightness, max overlclock w/ performance gov) and then i'm going to power off and do a full recharge. this seemed to have fixed similar issues in this thread:

edit: suppose i should say that i was not experiencing this issue until i updated KT747 this morning.
this is what i did:
1) drain the battery completely. let the phone die.
2) charge to 100%. do not power the phone on until it is completely charged to 100%.
3) when i powered the phone on I was at 99%. i plugged it in and it went to 100% in about 2 minutes.
this seems to have completely solved my problem. the android system has gone from using 57% of the battery to 6%. it seems like the kernel i was using vastly overestimates the percentage of the battery to allocate to the android system until it "learns" the capacity of the battery

I am also a Telus user. I had big time battery drain issues even with trying everything: enabling power savings mode, running Juice Defender, using wifi more, using darker wallpaper, keeping a closer eye on syncing operations, screen brightness and some other stuff.
After about 10 days I went back to the vendor (Futureshop) and convinced them to give me an exchange on the battery. They have a 14 day return/exchange policy for cell phones if you are not completely satisfied. I took some screenshots to argue my case. Thankfully the rep said ok and further explained how much power an AMOLED screen uses. I really didn't want to convince him that I am quite informed on battery drain issus and took the new battery and ran!
Conclusion is the new battery is so much better it's like night and day. I have the capacity now that others have been raving about.
If you can exchange the battery, do it. Then get the new battery and charge it up fully first thing.

I searched the web and also on Xda but I could not find an answer to the problem I got. I want to know if anybody has the same problem as I have. Firstly I want to clarify that I am NOT talking about a normal battery drainage caused by background apps, foreground apps, enabled wifi, bluetooth, google background activities, synchronisation, facebook, google location settings, any antivirus app or something of that kind. There are plenty of threads about that and google search is full of this topic. I am talking about something else when it comes to sudden and quick battery drainage.
It already happened to me a couple of times when I use the built in projector of my phone (samsung galaxy beam). So I watch a movie on the projector and it takes let say.. around 30 percent of my battery life. After I turn the projector off, close all foreground and background activities I wait like a minute or 2 and the battery status drops from lets say 28 to 20. This is normal as the battery status somehow needs some time to get "updated". So after every single fore- and background activity is closed and I got 20% battery left I go to bed. Then in the morning I look at my phone and its dead meaning the battery dropped to 0 causing the phone to turn off. And thats not normal for me. (I do hear the sound of very low battery in the early morning meaning it doesnt turn off within 1 hour which would mean faulty battery) First I was thinking that this problem might be caused by previously overheating the battery but I checked the temperature and here all is fine. Also both batteries are not too old and still work normally (beside the described problem). I may add that using the projector itself is not an "extreme" usage of the battery. When I use the projector, play an HD android game connected to my ps3 controller ...that is a different story.
So my question is what could cause this rapid battery percentage drop even tho the phone has no activity at all and sleeps. Sometimes it happens and sometimes it does not tho..If I would not use the projector then I loose around 2-3 percent overnight, if I use it then I sometimes loose 20% without doing anything. And thats not normal. I understand that a lot of people dont have my phone, but I still would like to know if anybody had the same issue on his phone after "heavy" usage? Maybe android somehow thinks that there is still activity even tho there isn´t. Like a virtual activity making the battery think its in use and therefore draining it. Any thoughts on that?

ya, even my xperia m with JB 4.3 drains heavily.
This is a case where actual current measurements will narrow things down.
It could be that when you turn off the projector, there is still some hardware drain going on.
It could also be that the last "20%" of your battery is really only 1%.

this can be due to some defect with ur battery or with the charger that you are using, you can rule this out may be by trying different charger and also changing the battery to rule out the battery defect. what @Renate NST say could also be the issue.
Problem solved
Ok. Just a little heads up. I managed to solve the problem. Thanks for the replies. This is how I solved it:
1. I first ran this app ( Battery Life Repair) to check for any faults in the battery itself https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.BoshBashStudios.batterydoctorrepair
2. Then I installed this app (BatteryCalibration): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nema.batterycalibration and followed the advise as written on the app (regarding full charge and discharge- I discharged it until the phone switched off). 3. After I watched a movie on the phones projector I restarted the phone and it stopped from draining the battery until 0 and went back to a normal discharging state
So with a bit of heavier battery usage (watching a movie on the projector) the phone or battery somehow memorized this usage, and thought it has to continue in this state even after I ended the movie and turned the projector off. But the above 3 actions solved my problem. Its important to mention that you will still loose some battery life as you need to restart the phone. But this is obviously way better than having the battery run down to 0% for a virtual usage... :good:
PS: If you still got problems with ur battery you might want to replace it or change your charger...

I got a battery issue on my Samsung Galaxy Core Prime for at least more than a year.
The problem is: almost everytime, my phone crash when arround 40% battery level. It's not an informatic crash but... I'm not sure. The phone just suddenly shut down, not as it ran out of battery, displaying the shutdown logo and going to sleep, it behave like I pulled off the battery.
This is not a battery misplacement problem because the shutdown doesn't happen a totally random way: it never triggered over 50% for now.
Moreover, the battery level goes wrong after such crash. Even after waiting some time with battery out of phone I got randomly a new battery percentage that will be either lower, same or even higher than when it crashed. So maybe the whole problem is due to a shift between real battery percentage and what phone determined.
I also noticed that when rebooting after the crash the phone speakers make a weird sound, a kind of "shhhhhhhh" even with silent mode enabled and no system sound, and when it happens phone recrash on booting (system) logo.
I personally don't think it's system's fault, because between the first time it happened and now I may have flashed at least 6 times my ROM and made various wipes. Also somebody getting the same phone model than me never got such problem, even tough he is not rooted and has recent firmware. In the end the problem getting worse and worse again (=more frequent) so I'm almost sure it's a material problem.
But which one? Is this directly battery's fault or is it captor's fault? Actually I threatened the battery very badly, it's true. But everything I did — overcharging, emptying battery at the time I thought that was a good thing because of a suppoesed memory effect like nickel batteries, using charger block from an older device with a bit different configuration — should have shortened the battery's life, however it's just like the battery is now discharging a bit faster but got a kind of danger zone where you're not sure that it will keep behaving normally, so much that some measurements and developing apps determined that my battery have a good health, that is maybe absolutely FALSE.
Talking about this danger zone, I also noticed something even stranger over all.
Depending of what I do, I got higher or lower chance to have my phone crashing under 40% level:
- If Wifi is enabled, the phone got arround a half more chance to shut down unexpectedly.
- This is worse when using data consuming app (i.e. Youtube)
- Using more hardware also increase this phenomenon (when using camera) and enabling flash instantaneously and almost everytime crash the phone.

It has happened to me many times. So i normally keep it charging all the time to be safe.

All the time for real? Be careful, that's not a good practice. Unless you removed the battery first, this will get worse if you do that.
I have a similar but possibly unrelated problem.
If i charge upto 100%, the battery goes directly to 0 after around 50%.
If i charge upto 50%, then the battery drains rapidly after around 20%.
I don't think its a battery problem because its the same with two replacement batteries and a stock battery. (Or maybe I have a bad luck and bought ****ty batteries)
Will post a screenshot soon...

What you posted is close to what I noticed, so it is not unrelated.
This is weird that after buying two more batteries the issue still occure...

I got a battery issue on my Samsung Galaxy Core Prime for at least more than a year.
The problem is: almost everytime, my phone crash when arround 40% battery level. It's not an informatic crash but... I'm not sure. The phone just suddenly shut down, not as it ran out of battery, displaying the shutdown logo and going to sleep, it behave like I pulled off the battery.
This is not a battery misplacement problem because the shutdown doesn't happen a totally random way: it never triggered over 50% for now.
Moreover, the battery level goes wrong after such crash. Even after waiting some time with battery out of phone I got randomly a new battery percentage that will be either lower, same or even higher than when it crashed. So maybe the whole problem is due to a shift between real battery percentage and what phone determined.
I also noticed that when rebooting after the crash the phone speakers make a weird sound, a kind of "shhhhhhhh" even with silent mode enabled and no system sound, and when it happens phone recrash on booting (system) logo.
I personally don't think it's system's fault, because between the first time it happened and now I may have flashed at least 6 times my ROM and made various wipes. Also somebody getting the same phone model than me never got such problem, even tough he is not rooted and has recent firmware. In the end the problem getting worse and worse again (=more frequent) so I'm almost sure it's a material problem.
But which one? Is this directly battery's fault or is it captor's fault? Actually I threatened the battery very badly, it's true. But everything I did — overcharging, emptying battery at the time I thought that was a good thing because of a suppoesed memory effect like nickel batteries, using charger block from an older device with a bit different configuration — should have shortened the battery's life, however it's just like the battery is now discharging a bit faster but got a kind of danger zone where you're not sure that it will keep behaving normally, so much that some measurements and developing apps determined that my battery have a good health, that is maybe absolutely FALSE.
Talking about this danger zone, I also noticed something even stranger over all.

My device goes at 60%, 40%, etc. and then it starts repedeatly pressing the right side of my screen and not letting me tap the screen, so I lock it and unlock it very fast and I can use the touchscreen for a few moments, before it shuts down without the shutdown screen and makes a *tick* sound, almost like there was an electrical shock inside the battery. I have a PRF and TWRP 2.8.7.0.

Got exactly the same problem. You can try to change the battery but in my opinion the only good solution would be to buy another phone. This is personally what I did, as this model gets old really early.

I have this same exact problem and the only fixes according to me is to buy a new phone or replace the battery. Also I noticed that the battery of my device has bulged.
RIP, I have the SM-G360T1, stock based custom ROM with TWRP 3.0.1 and this thing's started to give up. Same issues as the people above encountered. The phantom touches are getting wayyy more repetitive, the battery all of a sudden goes down to an extremely low percentage, even at medium to high percentages (such as 50-60%) and even shuts off without any notification. I also had cases where the phone would completely turn off with no shutdown animation AT ALL, plus a spontaneous but audible *TICK* that follows it. Device performance in general also started to horribly depreciate.
Well, to be fair, I had this device for 3 years and I guess it had its day. Time to upgrade.
My device has started to shut off at 80% battery levels and even worse the device gives just about 25-30 min of SOT. Also stressing the device in any way.. games, YouTube et al just causes it to shut down. I now permanently have a battery pack connected to it at all times. But even after all this, the gives good standby time. Notably the device stand for 3+hrs on 3% battery.
Still my phone is in a pathetic condition. ?
Edit - I just got a new battery (aftermarket brand though) and the ghost touches along with sudden shutdown has gone. Also the OG battery was never touching the connectors properly or the battery placement design was not proper, cause the new aftermarket battery was not connected to the connectors properly.

i also got this problem on my sm-g360HU , try chaging different roms and buying a new battery pack, but still this sudden drain battery still exist, it seems like it's the hardware problem already.
