[Q] S6 Edge ROM Development. - Galaxy S6 Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys,
Since Samsung realeased 2 versions of the S6 ( S6 and S6 edge) will there be difficulties when ROM developers want to create a ROM, because of the bended screen?
Cause that would be a pity if such a beautiful phone, will have poor ''XDA Support''
Greetings,
Hammief

Your major problem isn't the curved screen fail, it's Exynos. Samsung likes to keep their Exynos platform free of third-party developers.

Hmm, I hope if the S6 will be a success, they start thinking about satisfying the developers
Is there a huge difference between Exynos and Quallcomm CPU's then? Or is just Samsung not wanting to co-operate with developers?

Samsung will never be developer friendly, remember they still think TouchWiz is good. They won't admit defeat and just remove TouchWiz and make their Samsung specific apps work with less modification of Stock Android.

Galaxy Alpha vs. A5 longtime support from dev´s

Hi there,
i am about to buy a new phone sooner or later.
My old SGS III (I9300) is still running quite fine (thx to the dev´s in here), but after 2,5 years i looks kinda awfull by now because of the bad build quality (cheap plastic crap) of the body.
So the next should have better build quality = metal frame if pos.
So i figured out 2-3 possible phones:
Samsung Galaxy Alpha or Samsung Galaxy A5 (wont be released in the US/Canada as far as i know)
As an alternative:
Phicomm Passion
The most important point for me is the longtime community support from CM,Omni, etc. This tbh is the only reason i still use and can use my quite old S3. And i can´t even tell you how much i hate Touchwiz and crap UI´s like this.
Might it be easier to get a good working CM for the A5 because it will have a Snapdragon 400 or 410. I often read about Samsungs Exynos making it hard to develop for.
So do you got any thoughts what device will have the better community support? Yeah crappy question i know, just wanna hear your thoughts
greetings from germany

A5 is midranger sd410 , don't go for it .
U can't compare Alpha with A5 , go for Alpha / iphone 5s/i6 / Wait for S6 / htc M9
Touchwiz of Alpha is fine , i had moto G before and hated stock android very much .

Yeah i know the the Alpha has a stronger SoC, and is intended to be a flagship device. But tbh as long as the system runs smooth i dont give a damn at antutu scores and dont even play any games.
But i think the best precondition for a good longtime support from the community is a high popularity and alot of sold devices. Atleast i think thats the reason the SGS3 for example, is still up to date.
I dont really care about the support from the producers like Samsung, HTC, LG etc. They all do quite a bad job at holding their devices up to date. (Sony might be a exception) The community does this job alot better in my eyes.
As far as i can see it the Galaxy Alpha didnt sell this great and the active dev´s and roms are quite rare (sadly).

For long and good community support, this device is not it for various reasons example high price, battery performance, uncommon and exynos chipset.

I run a CM developer build and my battery lasts for 2-4 days. I never had a device with such good battery life. The exynos chipset is great, cause the modem is separated from the main system. They don't share any memory. So the modem can't access the android filesystem.
same hire,2-4 days moderate use
our phone is optimised as iphones
normaly coz we dont have every week to flash custom roms hehehe
rorian & leripe are quite right,
if you check Alpha's sub forum u will notice that is already half dead
that's sad cause Alpha is a truly strong device, will an excellent design.
It has its flaws -as all devices have-, but that's expected.
The phone went live on the market with a high price, because was directly compared with S5,
so customers expected the price to be lower than s5.
The competition was already high in this range with cheaper models.
Then finally sammie put the tombstone on the device by announcing the end of production.
The device is good , im happy to own it, and i would buy it again for sure, but it hurts when im
clicking in xda and see no interesting from the community, i blame 101% samsung for this, EPIC marketing/scheduling fail.
Sorry if my englisch isn't that good.
I'll get my Alpha tomorrow. I think the forum is quite dead at the moment because everyone is waiting for the release of the cyanogan mod custom rom. I hope that with the release of CM sooner or later (maybe with lollipop) more and more different custom roms will be made for our device.

You hate it, i love it, and the other way around. Just personal preferences. What i hate about Samsuns is just their update politics. They even got probs keeping their flagships up to date for longer than 1 year and even if they do, the updates are delayed for months.

Are they even working on an official cyanogemod 12 for alpha or is there any dev in here working on an unofficial port yet? If yes it would be great news and it would be a big argument to buy it over the A5.

Since the Galaxy A5 ain't going to be launched in the US I shouldn't get my hopes up to see a custom ROM right?

That is funny I gave up my nexus 5 for the Alpha and I cannot be any happier, and Im a developer developing games for android and they run very nicely on my alpha also looking forward to the Lollipop update.
Here's Antutu Benchmark for Galaxy A5
I've just come from iPhone 6 then note 4 and then decided I wanted a smaller device but android so I purchased the alpha after looking into buying the a5 the alpha is a better device by far. I'm very happy with this only wish it was abut heavier and so slot that is all but for now I'm enjoying this little beast

Nexus 5 to S6 edge..

Hey fellow s6 edge users, just moved from the nexus 5 and had a couple of questions
I used to do a lot flashing (custom roms/kernels) and most did that for additional functionality, battery life and performance. Is that really necessary to do with the s6 edge? Should I just keep it at stock?
How do i know which version of s6 edge im using? ( Bought mine from Wind Canada )
Hows rooting and such ? worth it, easy etc?
Sorry just realized i shoulda posted in the Q&A section... sorry
Root on the s6 edge is very easy to obtain. Unlocking the boot loader is impossible. Since I rooted, I have been able to use more battery Saving techniques, however, Xposed is currently incompatible with Samsung's changes to art. There are few pros to root at the moment with Samsung's flagship

Slaughtered Rom by DaKillaz98 [Note7 Base with S8 Additions]

*Mods please delete or lock*
I am deeply sorry, this ROM never saw the light of a proper release. After all the silence, everyone needs an update. I went through a great deal, involving becoming homeless and such, the phone I used to test was stolen, and I lost the computer with all the files for the ROM. Having finally became stable enough to develop, I no longer have anything I would need to develop ROM's for this device.
Without further ado, this ROM is EOL (End Of Life) and won't see any further updates, my development won't continue for this device any further unless anyone can help with donations toward a test device. (Not expecting it) PM me for more info if you wish. With that, I am once again, extremely regretful that I can't continue, but I have no means to continue. Thanks for all the support I once received, catch me on the S6 forums with some new stuff soon!
wow new rom.... best of luck. plz integrate built-in edge panel if possible..
Looking forward to see any difference

Hello all! I am introducing a new ROM that I have been working on behind closed doors to give us a great Note7/S8 Experience on our Note Edge devices.
: A new ROM meant to include all and be a single standard introduced in a place of full ROMs just to broaden fragmentation?
Techinically yes, but this ROM is designed around a clean experience that just works. I do not use mods in my ROM unless they are a system tweak or a small addition to improve performance/battery.
I don't believe in mods because some of them have poor implementation and cause issues due to apps not being developed to handle these differences. A good example is people modding their ROMs to have more Nougat style notifications on Marshmallow. These are problematic as the weird set up of the notifications layout can cause problems with apps that don't recognize the change.
My ROM is close to being ready for a Public Release, but keep in mind that I and no other ROM maker are perfect and the ROM may have issues as it grows to fruition.
I will build on this thread once I am ready for release.

Unsure as to what you mean by built-in edge-panel, do you mean the Note 7 version, or the original Note Edge version. If it is the Note 7 version, it is already implemented, I can't implement the original Note Edge panel due to incompatibilities and Performance issues.

Unfortunately, I do not know how to support the SC01G, I can only reliably support devices that are supported by RamKernel, as that is the kernel my Rom relies on. You are free to try any kernel and data fix to see, but I can't be of service. I only build for devices I have nearby and are able to easily test.
Also, sorry friends, the testers and I are still working on some troublesome bugs that make deployment not possible yet. I am also exploring alternative packing methods to lessen the package size to make it easier on bandwidth as well. I don't have an ETA yet, but I promise that the ROM will be worth your while.
I only have one request.
No need to put another camera app on this ROM other than the stock note edge camera but please make it in full screen with no black bars on either side because aside from fingerprint issue that is the only thing that is not fixed on ported roms for our note edge. We will be very happy to see that.
if not possible then please at least make it run in 2560x1440 rather than 2560x1600 that creates a big black bar on the left. side. Thanks.

I implemented a Note 7 Camera into this ROM, I can't use the old Note Edge camera app because it relies on the edge framework from the old edge ROM. It has incompatibilities with my current ROM and can't implement it. Unfortunately, you will have to seek out a new camera app. Sorry I can't help you.

It does not, I mean its a ROM built with support for Note Edge and is tweaked that way. The OS uses Note 7's cocktailbar service. And what do you mean by swap from lock screen to launcher?
Add support to the canadian model like seriously
Will it run on N915P as well?

Thank you for your answer mate. Yeah the switch, not easy to describe for me. If you're on lock screen you have on the edge the "Galaxy Note Edge" (or you modify it with "My Design". When you unlock the edge does switch to your default cocktail feed like CatchMe. This switch does not work on the port.

Oh, I understand what you mean. The reason that the Note Edge CocktailBar couldn't be ported is because I am using Norma's Note 7 port. Some may consider it cheap that I use a base and modify it heavily; but it makes no sense to try and reinvent the wheel.

AAAhhh, i also had problems to implement the Note edge cocktailbar to the Norma rom. That's why i did it with the X-Rom and Noble rom. And why not take a could base to modify, i think it is a good choice.

Any help would be appreciated. Trying to install some bloatware.

I just made the jump from an A71 to the M51.
So far they're really comparable phones, but I"m really do kind of miss 2 pieces of bloatware that I felt samsung actually excels at
I was trying to side load Samsung Side panel, and Smart select.
Any idea how I can accomplish this. I found the Apk's but they won't install
Is the reasoning due to being CORE one UI and not the true one UI?
Thanks.
Probably they need some framework libs that the m51 doesn't have
did u get android 11? side panels are ON

The reason is than on A70 you had full OneUi while on M51 there is a stripped down version - CoreUi
With Android 11 you will get side panel
This way Samsung tries to differentiate M and A serie ( when latter is to be considered upper midrange ) while hardware differencies between those 2 series are minor

Question will the Galaxy S23 range have a ROM scene?

Is there anything that predicts developers will take more interest in the Galaxy S23 range, so we can finally have a custom ROM scene for Galaxy?
Maybe because the S23 (all devices: S23, S23 Ultra, S23 Plus) ditch Exynos in favour of a Qualcomm SM8550-AC, an S23-exclusive version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2
Did we need a change of wind to make things turn out differently for this device versus earlier Galaxy S ranges? I really hope it's time for renewal, as if im not wrong, the last one that had a nice ROM scene & development going on was the Galaxy S5+ which is so many years ago..
I am talking about a sizable custom ROM scene (all recent devices were dealt a bad hand, or completely lacked it) and the least that would make me very happy: the entry of LineageOS, something that's not been there for years, surely for reasons.
Due to having been away from Galaxy as a result of the lack of ROM scenes in prior devices, I am out of the loop regarding Samsung Galaxy platforms for development support, can anyone state what the main things holding it back have been in recent years? Things being locked down too much, like with other major brands? For what the main blockers are, is there reason to believe that the S23, or the move from Exynos to Qualcomm chips on the other hand, will make a difference? Because as far i know, Qualcomm is the proficient & preferred platform for most devs.
Well as much as Samsung makes everything depend on Knox not being tripped, I doubt it.
I noticed that something may be ongoing when it comes to custom ROM (LineageOS, chipset) work for Galaxy S23+, see: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/lineageos-progress.4582781/
Development there can benefit S23 Ultra vice versa, as it's similar and also sm8550-ac, who knows if that person succeeds they'll move on to S23 Ultra afterwards. I know it's speculation, but in my book these are hopeful signs.
Rom scene has been dull on this side due to Samsung Crippling devices when rooted (Knox being permanently tripped - hence killing resale value) and Dev's losing interest in Samung. We have 2 roms and 2 devs actively supporting the development here which is nothing like the Galaxy S5 or Note 4 Days.
Aside to the above, The stock devices are so good, that there's nothing more you can achieve by rooting which can outweigh the cons of rooting.

There exist at least 2 other very good and stable Roms with lots of mods for the Ultra.
ATN Rom and VN Rom.
just noticed this thread about gsis on the s23 range : https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/how-to-gsi-on-s23-ultra.4564249/#post-88279455 (seems to be interesting)
(also noticed a discussion on installing other gsis on the xiaomi 13 : https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/xiaomi-13-gsi.4572035 )
seems to be interesting to me ... maybe I ll buy an S23 to try (I saw a used one that was not too expensive) but maybe I am not avanced enough to succeed

Nice, i was mainly interested in LineageOS/for development to get going on something like the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (sm8550) chipsets, if only we can get a flagship from today in the best possible software package which is where i won't settle for anything less than LineageOS. Not in any case, no matter how good the stock ROM is - it's about freedom, control, privacy & security - where in LOS everything is opensource and auditable (as opposed to OEM.. you don't know what may be running and how secure it is). Not to speak of even faster security patch levels than from any vendor. I also believe you won't feel the true power of your high end hardware until you're running an OS that's practically as clean as AOSP, such as LOS. It's like people dont know any better, and that raw performance (flagships..) offsets your perception anyways.
Since this topic, i've set my gaze on a new device with the same chipset (sm8550) as the Galaxy S23 range - the Motorola Edge 40 Pro, a flagship.. even if chaptsand (as per https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/lineageos-progress.4582781/) can pull it off for Galaxy, i found a way to kickstart the effort for Moto Edge 40 Pro as well, by sponsoring it and bringing a few devs together. If you're interested in that effort, read some comments before and after this one: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...-motorola-edge-30-dubai.4536169/post-88509185, and it still has to be moved into its own topic. But if that gets accomplished and for Galaxy it doesn't turn out well, at least ill have something to recommend to anyone that wants LineageOS on a latest tech flagship. For those that think like me, and won't ever settle for less.

thanks ! very interesting and generous from you !!
but I must say I am more interested in a hardware with a "flater" screen than the Edge 40 Pro.
an inconvenience with the S23 is that you are losing OTA with stock rom if you root it ( https://www.xda-developers.com/how-to-unlock-bootloader-root-magisk-samsung-galaxy-s23/ )
so, unless there is some AOSP rom with updates for the S23, it seems safer to me to go for the Xiaomi 13 (after I had a look at this guide : https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...bootloader-root-flash-twrp-flash-rom.4538433/ ) ... or maybe I ll go for the Poco F5 pro 12/256 as it should start with an early bird price of 499E tomorrow, although it s an SD 8+ gen 1 instead of an SD 8 gen 2 (oh it will be 479E with the 20E coupon on https://ams.event.mi.com/fr/poco-f5-series-product-launch ) ...
good luck !
