I haven't rooted or messed with any of my Android devices in a long while, so I'm a bit rusty.
After searching and skimming through countless threads, I still have no idea whether I qualify to unlock my bootloader nor how to actually go about this process.
I would DEEPLY appreciate any help given!

Hi - welcome to the HDX forums. The options available and difficulty implementing them are dependent on the version of fire OS currently installed on your HDX. Bounce back with that and someone will likely guide you to the appropriate thread(s).
Keep in mind Kindles are not like most Android devices. It's easy to create a nonrecoverable brick flashing the wrong stuff.
I am currently running 4.5.3.

Your options at 4.5.3 are constrained. At present there is no reliable method to unlock the bootloader or install an alternate recovery (eg: TWRP). If you have the 7" model (13/Thor) you can roll back to a previous version of Fire OS (13.3.2.8 based on Jelly Bean), upgrade to 4.5.2 then root, block OTA, install gaps, etc. Or you can stay at 13.3.2.8, install Safestrap and the excellent Nexus Rom (based on JB 4.2). You may see references to earlier Fire OS builds, TWRP, CM 11/12, etc. Unfortunately, those options are currently unavailable given you are starting at 4.5.3.
I don't believe rolling back to 3.2.8 is an option on newer 8.9" models (14/Apollo) and few reports suggest Amazon won't do it either (preferring to replace the device with a reconditioned model that may come with a lower firmware level that can be more easily exploited). That said, things are changing rapidly. Check back frequently!
If you have the the 7" model start here. READ, READ, READ before attempting anything! Ask questions along the way. Recovery is difficult/impossible if you make a mistake. Tools/techniques you may have used (eg: fastboot cable) simply don't work on the HDX. Good Luck!

I have a month old 4G/LTE version of the Kindle Fire HDX 7" that I'd REALLY love to get Firefox OS running on. The problem of course is that A) I'm not a developer, and B) I've never tried to port anything before. On a positive note though, I am an IT guy and have Linux and FreeBSD experience, I have rooted/SafeStrapped/ROM'ed the HDX already, and I'm not overly concerned about bricking it. Also, I've been following the directions as laid out on the Firefox OS page about porting. Setup up Ubuntu 12.04.5LTS as recommended for the build evironment, got the SDK downloaded, etc.
So at this point I'm looking for help in understanding what the next steps are. Given that the HDX is rooted and there are other ROMS (the Nexus 2.0.1 ROM works really well), I have to believe that a lot of the heavy-lifting is already done as far as the binary blobs are concerned. After all, Firefox OS is just Mozilla's own custom roll of Linux (I'd link to the Wiki entry for Firefox OS but apparently I'm not allowed to yet).
So if anyone can give a ROM newb an OVERVIEW/crash course in porting, or if you want to collab on the porting project, it would be greatly appreciated.

I purchased an HDX 7 off of Amazon. Unfortunately, I was unaware that this device would update out of the box so I allowed it to as I was over eager to mess around with it.
I am having difficulty finding clarity on how to root. I am currently running OS 4.5.3.
Is there a simple step by step guide out there for this version. It is difficult narrow down information through these many threads. Please excuse my ignorance, I am just looking for some clarity.

You can't root 4.5.3 directly but you can rollback to 3.2.8 and optionally upgrade to 4.5.2. Both are rootable. Staying at 3.2.8 offers flexibility to install Safestrap and run the Nexus rom if you don't care for Fire OS. Gapps can be installing on either with vary degrees of effort/success although it seems easier on 3.2.8. Nexus is a great option if you don't mind JB roots. Very stable with a near AOSP experience. Unfortunately, other roms (eg: CM11/CM12) are not an option at present as the bootloader can not be unlocked on 3.2.8/4.5.2.
Start here if you want to rollback. As always, do your research up front and proceed carefully as Kindles (HDX in particular) are easy to brick with limited recovery options. The last point can not be over emphasized! You won't find any step-by-step guides but folks are willing to help with specific questions if you have done your homework.

I had the same issue. I already downgraded to 13.3.2.8. Where would I go from here. I want to make sure I proceed with caution.

I know several methods, they all exchange the kernel on the boot partition and have a more or less tedious way to install SuperSU
Year, thank you for your answer. I see root is possible for our device, but I hesitate to do it as I don't know exactly which apps would stop working once and for all without drm keys and there are no good custom roms, even cyanogenmod. I wonder, this device was released ten months ago, and so little done.
It make me feel blue, as it kills the hope that something would change in the nearest feature((((((

for some people it is just "can haz video asap!?"
If you venture into uncharted territory you needs lots of technical background and some experience.
What works on one device may work with a little modification on another.
So you read a lot. xdadevelopers is a good starting point. There are books on the subject. Look for "reverse engineering" or "system security". Good Linux knowledge is very useful.
The tools you need are all free and come with more documentation than you want to read with your Linux distro.

The basic steps you need to follow are:
Unlock your bootloader
Flash the XT1527 RETUS 5.1 modem (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e-2015/help/moto-e-2015-modems-t3296044)
Flash the latest TWRP (my 3.0.1-r1 build as of this moment, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e-2015/development/twrp-squid-twrp-recovery-moto-e-lte-t3137649)
From TWRP, go into advanced wipe and erase system, data, cache, and dalvik
Flash CM13 + gapps together in TWRP
Apart from the modem, you don't have to upgrade anything else.
I choose to avoid Cm after reading up on it.
I prefer to use the Stock ROM etc
BUT!
I Root it with SuperSU then make my own Bootlogo + Animation
Then i use Squid's Kernel + Squid's TWRP and No-frills CPU Control (to use some of the options Squid's kernel has)
I believe my setup is cleaner and has more stable support and easier to do learn etc.
I checked on what features CM offers and none of it sound like anything i wanted.
I also don't want to have to fiddle around with Gapps or whatever.
I also seen some drawbacks before with some features on the stock Rom that do not work on CM.
I think most people use it simply because it's popular.
Evaluate your options and choose what is right for you.
First thing you want to do is check if you can unlock your bootloader.
Since your from Canada i bet you can.. i did on mine.
Squid's stuff plus Stock Android is good.. in my opinion better than CM.

Thank you for responding to my questions, squid2. I am very much honored to have had you taken the time to write on my behalf, this is certainly something to which I feel very privledged.
For the sake of clarity and accuracy I will quickly repeat the steps I just took after reading your answer to this thread. If you do not write into this thread a second time I will assume the steps I just took are indeed the correct ones.
1. I went to http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto...odems-t3296044 as you directed and downloaded only the one folder titled Modem, ignoring the larger file that includes another three folders in addition to the Modem folder (the larger file containing all the four files is 25.79GB, whereas the single Modem folder is just 561MB).
2. I then unzipped the Modem folder and selected the SURNIA-RETUS_5.1.zip, ignoring the SURNIA-RETUS_5.1_new.zip which is also in the Modem folder. (The newer SURNIA-RETUS_5.1_new.zip file is two days newer than the other SURNIA-RETUS_5.1.zip file, but since they are both in the same Modem folder I am taking that to mean I should follow your original instructions precisely as directed. Both files are about the same size, except that the newer file is slightly smaller than the other.)
Again, thank you. Your instructions were vital in enabling me to move forward on this task. We need a bitcoin tip jar for people who take time to help others.

Thank you, xpmule. I had been wondering whether it was a good idea to install CM or to use a stock Rom. From what I've been reading the Moto E version of Android is fairly bloat-free and since I really only need a rooted phone there is no real need for CM.
I've learned more than once that messing around with unfamiliar OS can be a recipe for disaster after foolishly timing updates of a Linux or BSD OS when I have papers due or exams to study for.
I'll take some more time to research the other options you recommended and then follow your lead with respect to this phone.
Again I'd like to thank both squid2 and yourself for helping me on this, and may I suggest that people who provide meaningful assistance such as this put a bitcoin wallet addres in their signature so that people like me can show our gratitude .

OP good luck.. i think Moto's Android is fairly bloat free.. The stuff Moto put on there is good.
Like the twist the phone to activate the camera app or the app that tweaks the notifications.
I am happy myself just modding the stock firmware.
Thank you squid2, I followed your directions exactly as prescribed and I am now rocking the lastest nightly build of CM on my Moto E. It was fairly easy and I can confirm that everything works just fine.
And thank you as well, xpmule. I was going to follow your instructions too but when I got to a certain point in my process and my phone asked if I was sure I wanted to reboot even though there was no OS installed, well I had one of those moments.

I picked up one of these bad boys on a pretty deep discount to use as a dedicated retro gaming device. I’m interesting in tinkering a bit and am wondering if anyone has any thoughts or suggestions on a good rom choice for my use case ? I’ve already gotten my unlock code and I’m pretty much ready to go at this point !
Most people say CorvusOS and EvolutionX are good gaming ROMs, they both seem to be fast. Some people talk about some sort of ROG gaming rom, though ive never heard of it, or tried it.
But, uhm... upon looking at this devices page.. there aren't ANY custom roms available for your device.

I fiundbthat this is a device good for being your experimental toy-around gadget for tweaks and other such root related changes fun to play around with what you can do but from what I know so uncommonly rooted or used by devs that have any influence on the releases of these roms to really give you the full experience of having a rooted device.

You can root it for kernel optimisations and debloating, while also giving you more customisation control over your device.
TWRP is available, so rooting should be possible with magisk.
