[Q] Help Req: Updating Rooted/CWM MotoG to Lollipop - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have a UK Moto G (2013) running 4.4.4 KitKat and I installed CWM and rooted it some time ago. Now they are pushing out Lollipop OTA I am getting nagged by the phone to update - but, it always fails when I try. Presumably this will be because of the CWM and/or root. I tried a full unroot but that didn't help as CWM kept complaining on the upgrade reboot about something (can't remember what now!). I've read that in order to get the OTA update to work, I have to get the phone completely back to stock, but I can't find a stock ROM and stock recovery for it. Do I have to take it back to stock or not ? Either way, would anyone know how I can get the OTA update to work please ?
At the moment it's back to rooted and CWM recovery.
Any help you could offer would be very gratefully received.
Thanks!

Get the update file from Motorola, flash it with CWM.

Galaxy s3 i9300 OTA updates while rooted with CWM recovery?

Hi guys!
This is my first thread post so bare with me I have a galaxy s3 rooted with CWM recovery on stock ROM. If Samsung releases a jelly bean OTA update to us soon, will i be able to flash it or will it brick the phone?
I know i can always flash a custom JB ROM that i know CM9 and AOSP are currently working on, but if i want to do it officialy through Samsung, will i be able to? Are there any risks?!
Thanks!
as long as youve used chainfires cwm ver1.5+ youll be fine to get ota updates but you will need to run cf root again after the update.

OTA's
Since v1.5, flashing OTA updates is supported directly using this recovery. You should however be aware that said OTA will most likely re-install stock recovery and remove this one. Furthermore, it may keep doing so every time you boot. CF-Root v6.3 (and newer) will try to disable this, it is advised you flash that. Just reflashing this CWM recovery will likely not help.

[Q] SGH I337 bricked with Knox bootloader

Hello everybody,
Greeting!
I've got Samsung S4 SSGH I337 bricked. I was on 4.2.2 until I was curious to get the 4.4 update. However, after reading on the forums it said you cannot upgrade to 4.4 directly (Except OTA which I never got). You first need to upgrade to 4.3 and then upgrade to 4.4 using the update patch. All went successfully until I though 4.4 seem no good to me as the root method was not available and I personally didn't find 4.4 to be much different than 4.2.2.
I tried to downgrade, without knowing a thing about Knox, by updating a ATT Stock Root MF3.zip update. It went through but with some errors, which I don't remember. I was still with the same 4.4 as the update was a waste.
I then tried to downgrade to 4.2.2 flashing the I337UCUAMDL_I337ATTAMDL_I337UCUAMDL_HOME.tar with Odin. This never worked and I bricked my phone. The phone is not unable to boot and comes up with a screen - Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again.
Kies doesn't recognize the device. It just keep saying "Connecting". I later learnt that it's the Knox Bootloader that is not downgrade able. I tried flashing the leaked 4.4 firmware for SGH I337 to no luck.
Please help!
Thanks a ton in advance!

Nvm guys...
I figured it out myself and the issue has been resolved.
Thanks

[Q] Traveling with Root

Hoping someone could answer a few questions I have for my Saferooted Samsung S4 MK2 4.3
I plan to take a business trip to Europe later this month. Does anyone know if I will run into issues not having the latest 4.4.2 update on my phone? I hate to guess that it'll be fine just to get over there and my phone not work but I also do not care for the idea of losing root because of having to update.
Being it's been over a year since I rooted the phone and I haven't been following this scene. I'm not sure what my options are as far as rooting the S4 with 4.4.2. still gotta search that one. I appreciate any advice. Thanks.
Can anyone help?
I see that rooting 4.4.2 is still not an option. Will I need to unroot and update?
If I were you, just to be safe I would upgrade to 4.4.2 and stay on stock rooted software while on the trip.
You can upgrade by flashing a no wipe or (recommended) full wipe nc5 tar file with Odin. You can't use an OTA update when you're rooted, it will fail.
You can root 4.4.2 using www.towelroot.com , one click and you're rooted basically
Thank you for replying joshm.
I will look at it now to figure out what to do. Hoping it's not too difficult.
Thanks again for the help.

Sprint recently pushed an update, updating their Galaxy S5's to G900PVPU2BOD3. I soft bricked my phone and want to get back to stock. I'm currently running CM12. [Q] Wait for 5.1 or go for a custom?

We are in the "soon" state from january, first with 5.0 and now with 5.1 and this phone is pratically becoming "motorola moto indians" considering that only them are getting soak and/or updates, so, what do you guys think? wait or go for a custom? i'd flash a custom now but i read everywhere people that have problems going back to stock after flashing custom roms on the E and someone says that this is the easiest phone to brick (why? dunno)
ps. yeah i really want to change, stock 4.4.4 it's giving me problems and since i need to reset soon i want to upgrade.

That someone is probably me I guess? Well ya, some devices are unbrickable but some devices like this one are easily brickable [emoji20] One bad move and you would end up with a bricked device with no rescue. There's more that can happen, unfortunately Please be careful, do not depend on OTAs much because they are the most famous sources of bricks. Always prefer flashing ROMs via TWRP latest. Also, if you want stock, ask someone to upload their TWRP backup of system and boot partitions if you already have messed up with OTAs before because at this point of time, we really don't know which OTA can brick the device so please stay away from them and prefer custom ROMs or TWRP nandroid backups [emoji55]
if i flash a custom rom like cm or whatever, will be easy to go back to stock 5.1? (when the update will be officially available)

Once the factory image is released, I guess it'll be easy to flash it via fastboot.
