Until they fix Nova - Galaxy Note 4 Themes and Apps

Big Nova prime fan here. Updated to lollipop and find that it broke expanded notifications gesture. This is a deal breaker for me. Way to far to reach with one hand. Swiping down for notifications should be a standard feature for big phones nowadays. I'm sure it'll be fixed but need to try something different for the time being.
Can you all help me with a new launcher?
Must have: expanded notification gesture.
Wants: similar features to Nova but I'm willing to try something new and expand my horizons, as long as notifications come along for the ride.
Thanks!

Have you tried apex launcher or I think it's called lucid both have gestures, I use nova as well and have used the other two when nova is having issues apex more than lucid, hope that helps some

I rarely use 3rd Party Launchers, but I know Solo isn't horrible and supports gestures and has a free notification add on.

That's one of the main reasons why I downgraded back to KitKat. There was no app being able to expand the notification bar anymore. A little, but absolutely horrible thing. Samsung, what were you thinking?! As long as this doesn't get fixed, I don't even think about upgrading to Lolliflop anytime soon.

Looks like Action Launcher is our only option for expanding notifications. There are others, like those listed above, that support gestures but just not notifications. At least we know it can be done and may be a sign that it won't take too long to fix.
Don't really hate Action Launcher but not sure I am ready to pay $5 to test. Will settle for a few days and see if it grows on me.

Works perfectly for me in latest Nova Launcher Material Beta. It prompts you the first time to enable Accessibility Service when using the gesture.

Is that under nova settings out accessibility settings under system settings of the phone? I'm using apex and I don't see anything under system accessibility.

It works perfectly for me, I have Nova on in accessibility. I'm pretty sure it worked before I turned Nova accessibility on too

keep nova, try my gesture control

MyHomeButton is the only app I know of that works at the moment. But as a stand alone app? Nada. It's unbelievable!

Try the beta version it's fixed and working fine now!

What launcher are you using for your TS?

Hi,
I wanted to get a sense of what others are using for their launcher interface for their TS.
I have tried a handful but nothing really seems to fit the bill all that well.
I have tried
Google Now Launcher
Launcher 8
Smart Launcher
Various "Big" and "Senior Phone" launchers
Nova Launcher
among others....
I seem to be constantly going back to the stock launcher (not OUI 2.0 as that is just crap)
What are you guys using or recommend trying?
One thing I seem to really hate about going to alternative launchers is the loss of the "real" status bar..... I have tried Swipe Status Bar, but that just introduces issues with having to swipe down when you need to access touch points that are near the top of the screen. (Plus the last version that was released completely made icons no longer clickable)
D.
Stock launcher for me seems fine.
I switch between stock Android launcher and GEL. I never use OUI2.

Smart Launcher for me, Operative style.
I'm pretty happy with lucid launcher across all my devices.

I have used ADW EX on my other devices for a few years, so I installed it. After tweaking the icon/text sizes and a few Gravity box tweaks, seems to work quite ok.
I think pretty much any launcher will do, as long as you can customize it around the limited screen space.
Lightening launcher with x3 UI layout.
Just tried smart launcher 2 as mentioned on here. It's really good! all the elements fit perfectly on the screen almost like it's made for the TS.
I really use the OUI... But I only tried stock and OUI, didn't try any others yet, so this might change
nova for me just with the icons set very big like my status bar to much and not a fan of the status bar app that will give you access to it never worked quite like the stock status bar should.
I've been using Mini Launcher... although only for a few days and haven't tried many other options yet, so i might change if there's anything better
+Lokifish Marz. Can you please elaborate a little on your set up.
Thanks in advance.
Right now it based on Lightning but really needs to be a standalone.
Thank You Sir?

Would love to have this for my Watch!
Personally, I really liked the WP8 launcher. Could fit lots of useful info and apps on the watch screen.

I keep falling back to the stock launcher. I've tried a few (nova, apex, and similar), but the status bar is the biggest issue. I'm really fond of the bar for easy overview of new notifications, and can't really live without one. Swipestatusbar solution works ok:ish, but not having the bar there after exiting apps and having the bar interfere with touch event at the top makes it a dealbreaker.
OUI is almost there - it has widgets, app drawer and screen sorting, and the status bar. It does however lack in other ways, like missing an indicator for which screen you are on, and everything looks very blurred, together with almost no customization. Some widgets looks as if they are rendered at like 50x50 pixels and zoomed to fit the screen. Also seems unstable, it has crashed a ton of times.
If the stock launcher could just get widget support, an app drawer and preferably a way to add/remove/sort your screens, I'd be happy with it. For now it works though, and seems fast and stable with status bar working..
EDIT: After playing around a few hours with different launchers today, I finally went back to Nova. It takes some getting used to, but the status bar issue now feels like an acceptable loss compared to all the gains. It works very well, and renders on small screens better than most other launchers (some have too much paddin in the grid, some render icons very pixelated or blurry, and so on). Nova does a good job, my only peeve is that icons are aligned to the top of their grid position, and widgets are aligned to the center. This means that if you place an icon next to a widget, they will not align, and also the icons come a bit too close to the top. However, it's still better than the alternatives I've tried, so sticking with Nova for now.
When?

When will you be releasing it??? :highfive:
I am using launcher 8.
The tiles uses most of the screen at any given time, as opposed to a more regular android launcher.
Android launchers in general wastes a lot of screen real estate. This is because of the way the icons are organized, with lots of empty space between them.
The tiles you get in launcher 8 is quite tight, like in a proper windows phone.
I like this.
The tiles are also customizable in size, so stuff that is often used will have big tiles, while the lesser used programs get smaller tiles.
Launcher 8 also runs smoothly.

i use tsf shell for many years on all my phones and tablets.
now i use it on the truesmart and it really works great.
its smooth, it looks cool, you reach everything you want in short time.
shure i have to use swype status bar, but that is not really a problem.
ok it is not really cheap, but you only pay one time and can use it on all devices, so i think the price is fair if you have more devices

Nova Launcher or EMUI

Hi all
I hope you're all having a good day!
I've had my Mate 20 Pro for a few days now and have been swapping between stock and Nova due to indecision, and after a lot of hard research into Fluid N.G for gestures to work and then SystemUI Tuner for annoying irrelevant status icons I'm left at a cross roads...
Nova now feels clunky from what was a more fluid EMUI gesture control. I love Nova and its customization but the gesture 'fix' for it to work is very distracting - my question is, are there any plans for Huawei or Nova to look into this?
If not, would a stock experience be more worthwhile over constantly being reminded of those 3rd party gestures?
By all means they work well 70% of the time, but it feels a lot slower & more clunky - would a different launcher be available that works better perhaps? or an alternate gesture app?
Look forward to your opinions and help,
Thanks,
I'm using Nova + Fluid and would not go back to the EMUI launcher. Its just too basic and get that stupid search. Fluid works well most of the time (love the animation), but sometimes the gestures defaults to the built-in one and you get that jerky going home animation that flashes the multitasking screen. Doesn't bother me too much though.
Even if Huawei fixes navigation with Nova, I love the swipe and hold gesture in Fluid to go to the previous app.

First Android with stock launcher

That I am perfectly fine using. Every Android I have ever had got Nova FIRST. This S10 has all the options and features I need to not have to do that. Anyone else skipping 3rd party?
No. I don't mind Samsung's software now days, but that is after replacing the home screen. I'm using Action Launcher on my S9+ with OneUI and probably will with the S10 as well.
My primary motivations are: Swipe left for Google, I don't like side scrolling app drawers, and replacable icons... That's really mostly it. Their launcher isn't awful, it just isn't very customizable.
I feel pretty much the same as AJerman. I never ran TouchWiz any longer than I had to and One UI is almost usable but I'll probably still stick with Nova. The #1 reason for that is no vertical scrolling in the app drawer. That was a major gripe in the One UI beta program and many of us suggested that to Samsung. It's a shame Samsung left out that one minor tweak.
I always switch to Nova to hide apps, for the 5 x 6 home and to lock down the home screen. This has all 3, so I'm gonna stick it out to see how it goes. But miss the swipe to Google Now though.

Nova prime a must have for me...
Trying to give the Bixby screen a fair shake, but I think I am very likely to load up Nova for the Google feed on the left. I don't hate Flipboard but it's clunky compared to Google or old-style Blinkfeed. I do wish Nova supported motion backgrounds.

One Hand Operation + (Galaxy Store)

Just installed this app yesterday, works great. You can customize swipes on your screen to do different things. I've attached a screenshot of all the current possible actions.
I'm still using stock gestures, but have added a few additional swipes.

I disagree...I never heard of this before.
I really like this app. Just found it yesterday. Wanted to turn off my screen with a swipe or app(now I do with a swipe). It works perfect. This should be BUILT IN to SETTINGS\Advanced\Motions and gestures! However, it is readily available on Play and Galaxy stores, sooo, NP.
Have hidden the bottom native nav buttons. They still work, but are hard to reach one handed. Don't have to reach down for back/recent/home anymore.
Can go directly to app drawer from another program. Very usefull. A plethora of actions.
This app works well if you want to use gestures with a 3rd party launcher but do not like the stock OneUI gestures. I had the stock gestures enabled but only used swipe up for home and then used OHO+ for the back and task switcher, not as good as proper android 10 gestures but works pretty well.
Finally I can use Android 10 gestures-like with Nova! Thanks!

No it is old , it is a part of Samsung goodlock package since i think galaxy s8 back in 2018
I am absolutely loving this app. I came back to Android after 1.5years of iOS and I am not disappointed with the level of customization we can do, and Samsung has definitely up its game as far as the software goes.

Question Any way to remove the Google search bar at the bottom of the screen?

I guess not? Pretty annoying as I never use it.

Get/use a custom launcher like Nova launcher -So much easier to customize and so many more features.

This is really bothering me. I dont want a 3rd party launcher, the launcher is fine except for that stupid search bar. Also I had many problems with 3rd party launchers in the past, and I'd rather keep the stock one which is tailored to the Pixel 6 series.

surprised someone finds 3rd party launchers like nova buggy
nova hits 10years old in december and its been pretty solid since forever
Likewise, I want to get rid of that screen wasting 'At a Glance' widget at the top of the screen!!
Don't fancy an alternative launcher - but may have to bite the bullet...

I've been using it for the last 6 years. It is feature-rich and less buggy and annoying than the four previous pixel launchers.

The beauty of Nova is, you can run both launchers, customize each as you like and switch between the two on-the-fly.
Infinite scrolling, custom bottom bar, multiple grid layouts...
When I get my P6P (today in theory) I will load all my apps from the Play store and restore my Nova backup. BOOM! my new phone will look and function exactly like my old phone... only bigger and cooler.

Thanks - I went with the Microsoft one - as it was the last one I had tried on my OnePlus over a year ago.
I will see how it goes - if not I will try Nova - I have the paid version also from 1-2 years ago.

Switched to Nova overnight (insomnia!) - did not like the news choices of the Microsoft Launcher left swipe page - stuff from Hello Magazine, Daily Express and Daily Mail -???
Added the Nova Companion and now got the Google Left swipe and no wasted screen space on the main page.

I had never heard of the MS launcher, or maybe never really given it any mind. I looked at it yesterday after you mentioned it and it looked awful. I really hate the tiles and the forced news that I could care less about... too much work to make it what I wanted.

Then you're missing out IMHO.
There is nothing "wrong" with the Pixel launcher per se, as long as you don't care that Google, like Apple, dictates how you interact with your phone; but, if you want to customize your phone to your liking, a custom launcher is the only way to go.
Nova has been rock-stable for a long time and has a myriad of great features, most of which are free.

+1 for Nova.
Nova is my launcher of choice.
It has been for a decade or so now.
I've tried many others but always come back to it.
Sometimes I use Action Launcher or will try something new but again always come back to Nova, which I am actively using on my new Pixel 6 (received it yesterday) as I find the stock launcher extremely lacking in features - haven't suffered a single launcher related performance or stability issue for a very long time, including on my P6.
I don't like having an app drawer or icons / widgets cluttering up my home screen so I assign gestures to launch specific frequently used apps such as Chrome and YouTube and for Nova's integrated "app search", which also displays other recently used, newly installed or frequent apps in tabs separate from the search bar.
I have a single Google "At A Glance" widget
and use the Maxelus Galaxy Pack Live Wallpaper app for additional personalisation and because I'm a nerdy space cadet.
+2 Nova. Double tap to lock gesture is something I have implemented for years and the customization is endless.

Wait, what's Nova Companion? I just put the Google icon on my home screen so I could tap it to get to the Google interface, but a left-swipe would be way cleaner...
If you root your phone, you can get rid of the search bar in the Pixel Launcher, add rows/columns, and more.

A little late to the party. Always used Lawnchair launcher on my Pixel3. Just got my P6 a few days ago and upgraded to Lawnchair again. Seems pretty stable on Android 12. I add Lawnfeed to enable Google feed left-swipe. Lawnchair is pretty similar to Pixel launcher except you can customize much more than stock (ie, disabling the bottom search bar).
