Fingerprint reader for more than unlock? - Galaxy S6 Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Securing the phone with the fingerprint lock is nice and easy, but what else, or when else can we expect to use it for other things like credentials for Web pages or securing other things than just the lockscreen? Are there any apps that can utilize the fingerprint scanner? Thanks.
-NVETHIS

You can already use it to log into pages, make sure to turn it on and it only works with the Samsung Web browser.

Install this from the play store you can then configure it to protect whatever apps you want.

Would be nice if on some point a dev comes up with a tweak like Virtualhome thats available for jailbroken iPhones. It uses the fingerprintsensor as home button, so no need to click the button.

That's would be a great idea, would save some wear and tear on the home button.

[REQ] for developers - Finger Print lock Apps

Occasionally I leave my phone laying around or let other people play with it, but it's getting very tedious having to lock it all the time. Anyone up for creating a app that will let me lock certain portions/apps on the phone (ie. SMS, gallery, etc.) using the built in finger print scanner?
I will second this. I recall reading that Moto was going to release the APIs for the print scanner. That should make it considerably easier.
just a bump, I know all you great minds out there are capable of this and want this too =)
+1
+1 yes, yes, yes a needed app
Yes, yes, YES! I've been thinking about requesting something like this for a while now!
I emailed the developer of Widget Locker since he seems to be fiddling with the Finger Print Scanner on the Atrix to see if he's interested in making a separate app for this. I wouldn't mind paying something like $1 for it.
How can we get this thread more attention from developers on XDA?
Keep the thread bumped, add some other keywords such a biometric scanner, fingerprints, fingerprint scanner, etc. (I myself didn't find this when searching), post the same on other forums, that's all you can do really!

And here I am! (Sorry for taking some time to get back to this)
What I'm doing from WidgetLocker is piggy backing on the system security, so I don't interface with the fingerprint scanner directly. However I have looked into this as it could be interesting for WidgetLocker to be able to use in more ways, and potentially another separate app like discussed here.
I've seen the other thread about the password keeper and this one about an app-lock type thing. The issue with a password keeper is that the passwords should be stored encrypted, otherwise if someone stole your phone they'd just need to root if (if it's not already) and they'd be able to get all your password. But encrypting the passwords with a key that's stored somewhere is really just adding a few extra steps, they're not truly protected. Normally they'd be encrypted with your password, and only decryptable with you typing the password again. But I don't think this could be done for the fingerprint scanner due to what information is available (And how the fingerprint information is stored on disk). I could be wrong however.
As for the app-locker thing, there are also security issues here, but I think app-lockers are more used as a deterrent than as real security. To lock out your friend rather than a thief. But there's a fair amount of non-fingerprint related work to be done for this kind of app as well.
If I do end up doing anything with it I'll post back.
I said this in the development section when it was released lol. So....+1 and good idea!

my reasoning behind this type of app as you said isn't for REAL security from a thief, more of a deterrent from people around me....such as a nosy friend or girlfriend =)
"such as a nosy"
Well, of course cell phones have had a way to prevent that for what, 20+ years now? You leave it locked, except for "emergency and speed dial" or other restricted calling. No reason that someone has to borrow my cell phone (and deprive me of my phone!) while they're doing whatever with it.
I don't have any guilt about saying "Sure, you can make a call. But I need my phone with me."

Well, if you have a friend that would invade your privacy then they are not your friend. And if you have a girlfriend that doesn't trust you enough to respect your privacy then dump her. You can't have a relationship without trust.
There are already apps that let you lock particular applications. I hand my phone over to my 4-year-old all the time so she can play Fruit Ninja, so I keep my work email locked down. I guess it would be kind of cool if the app locking software took advantage of the Atrix's fingerprint scanner.

lol, I second this... She's obviously insecure.
And why are we assuming that it's the girlfriend that's untrustworthy? PiTT (no offense, all due respect) is the one with dirty little secrets on his phone.

I would love to be able to lock my phone using the finger print swype. This can't be to hard, could it?

I don't understand what you are asking here. If you're going to be swiping your finger over the sensor to lock it, wouldn't it be just as simple to just press the button? If you have the sensor lock enabled, it will be locked with access only being granted to your finger swipe.
GEESH!
Clearly some people on this thread don't understand what's going on here. So let me break it down....
It's not about "it's not a real friend if they invade your privacy".
It's not about "why not just lock the phone itself".
Maybe you have a family member, girlfriend, wife, or CHILD you want to be allowed to use your phone. This requires unlocking the phone itself.
Buuuut, you don't want them snooping in your email or for the dense folks who don't get it, you don't want a CHILD deleting your messages accidentally, replying inadvertently to a co-worker via email etc.
Or let's be real, you don't want your GF or wife to see the chic you've been bangin's nude photo in your phone.
So you want to FINGERPRINT LOCK specific apps, like TEXT, EMAIL, SKYPE, TANGO, FRING, ETC! That way your "guest" can use your phone, but can't use any other apps without your finger!
GEESH!
I'd really like to see phones with Windows-like login profiles. So I can have my profile, ADMIN, and my wife can have hers GUEST.
Anyway...I second/triple/quadruple the idea of a fingerprint reader app lock. Right now I use AppProtector, and I'm looking into a new app called simply LOCK or (App) Lock.
"Clearly some people on this thread don't understand what's going on here. So let me break it down....
........you don't want your GF or wife to see the chic you've been bangin's nude photo in your phone."
*grin* The premise of your post made me laugh hard.
On a real note, I think this kind of application would be awesome. I too use appprotector, and I used to use the fingerprint scanner, but it just became bothersome to use everytime I locked my phone and had to unlock it. I don't have anything to hide on my phone, but I do lock my "SU" folder that contains all of my root tools. I have a 12 yo at home, and she could very easily mess something up without knowing it. I think the idea of locking certains apps with the fingerprint scanner is a fantastic idea, and I'd be willing to pay a few bucks for it for sure.
Actually, a whole utility for the fingerprint scanner on the Atrix that allowed you to do multiple things with it would be great.
Like was posted previously, it would be nice to have guest accounts (for wife and child etc), and with a fingerprint swipe, they wouldn't even have to login..swipe and go.

[Q] Some questions pre-sale.

Basically I intend to buy this as a primary note taking device for lecture for this coming semester and beyond and I have some questions.
Firstly what is the best tablet office apps that work well with the hardware keyboard? I had a play with Polaris in a shop on the original Transformer but I'm just wondering if there is better out there.
It'd be nice if there was like an automatic save every 30 seconds/minute or similar feature.
Also it'd be VERY useful if there was an app that allowed me to open two files at once. So I could, say, have an editable .doc open on one side of the screen and a .ppt on the other...
Secondly how is the physical keyboard? Like I said I played with the Transformer recently and the keyboard seemed pretty nice. A little bit small but something I could get used to/fast on.
Might add more if I think of them.
Thanks, G.
Don't have keyboard so can't speak to that but for office apps I like Google docs and smart office
smart office is a lot better and is very good sure you will like it

I nabbed the Smart Office APK in the Getjar $0 sale and it seems decent on my phone, does it have a tablet interface?
See I would love to use Google Docs but I heard it requires internet to work and due to the way my university's WiFi security is I'll only be able to use internet with apps that support proxy routing (as Android doesn't have this built in to the OS).
Yes the tablet interface is very nice I like it a lot

Is it possible to have the edit option on screen always/in easy use?
I'll be keen to change formatting to underline/bold/italics etc quite often.
Also, how quickly can one jump in and out of list options?
EDIT: also how quickly can one "tab" in an indent and then get back out of it?
I would say for what you want this may not be for you
edit bar does not stay open but jumping into options is just a press of button
For you, you may want documents to go or office suite 5 I read good reviews of those

Anyone else have input? Specific to my needs if possible
I had an original transformer, just got my prime yesterday.
I used my tf last two semesters for all my classes.
I usually use the pre-loaded supernote app to take notes. It takes kb input and you can draw as well (useful for science classes).
my teachers give us power point lecture slides and for that the polaris office is pretty good, I haven't tried the other office apps, but polaris should do most of what you throw at it.
Some of my teachers give pdf lecture notes, I use repligo reader to annotate on pdf.

Just gonna bump this in the hope that someone can direct me to something that might help me more.
This PDF annotation software will help as I need to deal with a lot of case law etc.
I'm guessing that there is nothing out there currently that supports having two documents open at once side by side as I said above?
Main requirement would be snappy formatting (Bold/Underline/Italic), can this be done in Polaris with CTRL+B/U/I?.
Also the list thing, I know it's not automatic when tabbing like in Word but an easy/quick to use button is fine.

no, there is currently no way of running two apps at the same time, it's a limitation of all mobile based OS's, everything essentially runs in full screen mode.
the CTRL commands should work fine, i'm pretty sure i used them for various things on my tf101.
Are any of these aforementioned office suit apps compatible with odt (OpenOffice format)?

It's not about running two apps at once. It's about one app having two files open at once.
Say a word document on the left and then a powerpoint on the right.
I doubted it'd be available. Maybe it'll come.

[Q] Chrome for Android: Disable swipe between tabs gesture

As stated in thread title: Is there a way to disable the swipe between tabs gesture for Chrome on Android?
The gesture interferes with my ability to use certain websites that I now rely on that currently do not have an app for Android. I've tried searching for an answer to this and I've just been flooded sifting through irrelevant results for Mac, custom ROMs, etc. So far, the only solution to this has been to use another browser, but I enjoy the seamlessness of Chrome's remote tabs feature. I would like to know if there is an advanced settings section similar to "chrome://flags" for the desktop or a workaround that involves root.
If someone can answer this it'd be greatly appreciated.

None that I know of. Use another browser for those websites.
That's the same problem I have with some Google apps, they are always looking nice, functions well but with limited options for customizations. The same problem with their Nexus devices too, Great devices, no external storage.
I believe some people at Google must really love some of the Apple policies.
Too bad!

Thanks for the response.
The site that is bothering me the most is the mobile version for Nirvana, recently my favorite GTD (Get Things Done) tool. This has become quite an issue for me being able to productively manage tasks on Android since they currently don't have a working Android app. The irony (in response to your point) is that their mobile site works perfectly fine on Chrome for iOS. I only have problems with Chrome for Android and I've found it even affects Google sites such as Google Reader Play that also use swipe gestures. I figure this has to be related to the way gestures are handled on Chrome for Android since I do not have as much problems with the stock browser or with Dolphin browser.
Hopefully, this is fixed in a future update or the developers for Nirvana can update their Android app from an alpha build to a stable beta version sometime soon.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I can't stand when there are multiple threads for the same problems/topics...
I too would love to disable this "feature". It is useless to me, as I rarely switch between open tabs. I like being able to close the tab I was previously on before switching. For example, I'll go to a site (say, hardocp.com) and open stories I want to read in multiple background tabs. When I'm done opening links from the main page, I'll close that and start reading the other stories. When I finish one, I hit the tab button, swipe closed the tab I'm leaving, then select the next.
The swipe to switch tabs feature drives me up the wall. It has also seems to have become more sensitive on my newest phone (S4). I am usually just trying to move a page that is zoomed in left or right when the piece if crap tab swipe invokes. I find that I have to stay within the center third of the screen to keep it from happening. It's even worse since I don't use the tab swiping in the first place.
The absolute worst, however, are mobile pages that utilize swipe features. They are practically useless. I normally get to the point where I'm about to throw my phone through a wall before I give up and force the page to open in desktop mode, which of course, only works about 1/2 the time in chrome. I usually end up switching over to Dolphin (which uses too much memory for me to use it as my default browser).
Chrome/Google really need to add an option to disable this junk. I often wonder how many people are actually using it (I'm sure Google is tracking this through statistics). I love chrome but hate this "feature"....

Holy crap it has definitely gotten worse! I also have an S4. You literally have to be in the dead center of the screen before starting your swipe gesture. I'm assuming they changed the code recently to increase the space on the sides that initiates a tab switch. Because you used to have to have your thumb right on the edge of the screen in order to swipe tabs, which I was somewhat okay with. Because it happened so infrequently that it took me a while to even figure out what was triggering it. Dumb feature.
That sounds like a good theory. It definitely was not an issue until recently.

I agree 200%! I also have an S4 and this is unbearable!
From reading other forums, I've found that if you use more than one finger and chrome pans instead of switching tabs. OR, as mentioned here, start your panning at the center of the screen. I find both annoying as I've always panned in all of my androids with on finger and from the furthest point to get maximum page movement.
This is being tracked under chromium issue 117657

Soul Browser - A litte gem you've probably never heard of

I posted this on the Kiwi Browser thread more in mourning at the lack of support and updates Kiwi has received in the last year or so.
So I stumbled on Soul Browser and it's been excellent so far. Extremely fast and lite. Unfortunately it doesn't have extensions but it's got virtually every function and customization you can think of. Digging into it's background it seems to be from a developer out of the UK so should be safe. It's on the Play Store but not open source unfortunately.
Everything is good and all but i couldn't find the toggle to turn video overlays on fullscreen. i watch something on youtube in portrait mode, when i make it fullscreen, video pauses, sometimes starts from the beginning and i don't like that overlay with full of buttons. How do i turn that of and have smooth transition?

Read the last 5 or so pages of the Kiwi thread on here and most of your concerns are answered. I, and several others, had the same worries but it seems Adguard DNS takes care of most issues. Trackers etc are all Google stuff anyway according to ClassyShark.

Thanks, yes I've just come from there! I use nextdns so nothing gets through to Google any way. It looks more a Samsung Internet base than Kiwi/plain Chrome. I just wish there was more info. And I'm so tired of being unable to migrate bookmarks, logins, cookies, etc between browsers!

I understand it's Chromium based but so is Samsung so all the same.
I'm having issues using it with NextDNS. It works but I get constant SSL errors on Soul which I don't get on Samsung or Kiwi, so there's something NextDNS doesn't like in there but I can't find it in the NextDNS logs. However it works fine with Adguard DNS and all trackers etc are blocked. I added Energized Ultimate to the adblock host list in Soul as an extra measure.
I imported my chrome bookmarks with ease using the html file. So no issues there.
A very good browser and can be greatly configured
(bars on top or bottom in custom size, long press settings, swipe settings, back/forward gestures, double finger gestures, no reload when back/forth, skip to page beginning, floating scrollbar, own blocklists, full auto dark mode, video downloader and much much more). I've never seen a better mobile browser, it's crazy.
But my problem with it is that it doesn't launch native apps from links:
Youtube is launched only if you google for youtube, but not from embedded videos; reddit is launched only if you use native reddit app and not third party one; ebay app doesn't launch and so on. Dealbreaker for me - I feel like on iOS.
Another thing is adblocker isn't consistent. If you jump through tabs and apps and then go back to prev opened website, sometimes there is suddenly an ad running, which was blocked before.
So overall it feels kinda buggy and you can say it's made by one person and on top of that - by a completly unknown entity (no mail, website) originate in Asia.
So I'm back on Samsung Browser beta which is still missing few nice to have things, but is fully baked.

I use Vanced and it launches directly. Check settings and enable the toggle to allow YouTube launch. I don't know about the ebay app but complaining about a 3rd party reddit app isn't the browsers fault.
I've switched off the built-in adblocker and use 1Hosts Pro and Energized Ultimate in the user field and never had that problem even with the built-in one active. Maybe because I also use a private dns adblocker on my devices.
I think the developer is from Korea as there are references to Korean legalities if you dig a little. I use this browser for daily casual surfing and it's fantastic but my main browser is also Samsung for secure and private stuff. Best of both worlds.
Well I use YouTube app and not vanced and it's not working. Toggle is set correctly and as I said some apps are starting, example "eBay Kleinanzeigen".
Ofcourse it's browsers fault if 3rd party reddit client is not starting IF it's registered in system as default reddit client.
Well written browsers always open apps properly: Samsung Browser, Firefox, Yandex and so on, because they respect those flags.
I don't want to need use vpn for adblocking.

I stopped using Energized Ultimate as it was overkill and heavy. I'm using 1Hosts Pro, OISD and Easylist now.

I think it was for donations but doesn't seem to work anyway.
Thanks for letting other people know about this browser.
I am not a advanced user. I only want a browser with adblocker and simple interface. I don't know about hosts, dns, etc.,
I have used Via, OH, Berry, Fulguris, Stargon, Onbibi browsers. Soul mixes all these into one.
Thanks
One thing missing is reader mode. Some old websites won't "work" mobile without it, example:
Infinite-baffle
Honestly! I'm just loving it! Perfect title and Perfect Browser name! Soul Browser

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mycompany.app.soulbrowser ? I don't see any info about it at all, no blog, no homepage, no xda, nothing. Do you know any more about it? I love kiwi, and would stick if it wasn't Chrome 77, but for SB I cannot find anything about it and the dev replies on Play Store don't seem native english (which is fine, but I don't want yet another app later shown to be harvesting data)

I totally agree about how nice this browser is but I'm also VERY MUCH concerned about the risk of privacy violation. Anyone has additional info about this ?
To the author if he's reading us: why don't you show up and talk about this important aspect of your (fantastic) app ?
Cool browser. But there's no option to import passwords
This was my daily browser for a while but now things are getting out of control. So much customisations as I like but not working flawlessly. Sad that no developer communication exist and bugs are not getting fixed.
Really like this browser but I have one really annoying issue : when watching a video in full screen landscape mode and would like to adjust something and tap the screen, the navigation bar do not disappear automatically...
Anybody faced this issue?

General How to disable Google feed on home screen.

There are colleagues who have asked me how to deactivate the Google feed window that we have on the left of the home screen, for those who want to deactivate it, they must follow the following steps.
We get into the application drawer, we go to the Google application. Click on the application and a window opens, click on application information and click on disable the application.
Now we will no longer have the Google feed window on the left of the home screen.
Any downsides on this? Just noticed Google assistant doesn't work anymore

As you say, the google assistant will not work for you.
Podcasts and Lens won't work either.
Thank you. This is the only reasonable answer, and it appears to be easy in fact. Unfortunately, the regular method is hidden/eliminated by the developers, i.e. there is no item to control it in the Home Screen settings. I have seen so many opinions, from "impossible" to sophisticated ways using Android Debug Bridge.
Good tip, works like a charm. I'm not a fan of Assistant or most other bloatware either, so good riddance. I just wish these products gave more control to the user, or even retained the same options to enable/disable things as the older versions.
