Different brightness issue, washed out colours? - Galaxy S6 Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Had my s6e a week now and right from the start I've noticed an issue with the screen colours on full brightness.
When in bright light something happens that makes all the colours look washed out and slightly pink. I've never noticed this on my previous galaxy devices and it's really dissapointing
It seems to be related to the auto brightness glitch as it does this whether auto brightness is switched on or not. When in bright sunlight it switches into a mode where all the colours look faded and horrible. When I cover the front camera area or turn the brightness down it switches back to normal.
I've tried changing from adaptive to cinema mode etc and it seems to make no difference.
Has anyone else noticed the change in colours or have I just got a dud?

Sounds like the extreme brightness mode Samsung implemented on the Note 4. If so, that's how it's supposed to look in direct sunlight to make it easier to see.

Could be, looks awful tho :/

It does. I think the idea was to optimize contrast to make the screen visible at the expense of accuracy and saturation.

I'm having the same problem with my S7 Edge. Had it a week and then the colors just started to wash out on everything. All themes, all screens. Nothing fixes it. I hold it next to my S6 Edge with the same theme and the difference in colors is drastic. It looks terrible.

[Q] Saturation AKA "Background Effect" samples?

Does anyone know where I can see an image the compares the different settings of the "Background Effect" setting? I've read that this adjusts the color saturation of the screen. This is a concern to me because I saw the Samsung Infuse in person and the screen was far too saturated for my taste. For just looking at icons and email it was fine. But when looking at photographs, the colors were far too saturated. Sure they "pop", but they're not accurate. I was wondering how the Galaxy S II compared at its different settings.
Thanks.
To be perfectly honest, colours on the GS2 aren't accurate at all. However, if you change the background effect from standard to movie (the lowest setting) it gets close and looks a lot better.
Is it feasible that selecting 'Movie' over 'Dynamic' will aid in power conservation efforts?
I've been using the 'Movie' setting with minimum brightness for almost a week and today I tried the 'Dynamic' setting with full brightness again and after 5 mins I couldn't look at the screen any more, my eyes were in too much pain!
I'm also wondering about the impact that background effects have on the battery. I have seen couple of battery reports of people using 'Movie' and they seemed better than I would have expected after looking at their usage.
Yes movie should save a little power. Dynamic is like"torch" mode which is
The mode shops usually have their tv's set to when selling them to show off

My samsung plasma tv has the exact same 3 settings, movie draining the

not as bright as Nexus S?

I was just standing outiside and noticed that I couldn't read the screen of my new Galaxy S2 which I never noticed on my Nexus S. So I compared the two in direct sunlight.
Isn't the sAMOLED+ supposed to be brighter than the original sAMOLED screen?
Is my screen less bright than other sAMOLED+ screens?
My Galaxy S 2 is definatly brighter in sunlight than my Nexus S.
although i have turned off my auto brightness and whacked it right up on both..
At brightness zero the nexus s is brighter than the galaxy s 2.
I noticed that in bright sunlight, I can't see the screen at all on my SGSG2 with it set to zero, which causes a bit of a problem upping the brightness! On the Nexus, I could see well enough to change it.
I think at full brightness though, the SGS2 is brighter. My retinas haven't recovered from accidentally setting 100% whilst reading at night.
I've been wondering whether there is a way to boost the brightness, I was going to make a topic about it.
Some reviews I've seen say they had to turn the screen down to lowest brightness as the screen is so bright, etc. however my screen is nothing special in terms of brightness really and I have it on full, with auto adjust off colours are good though.

yes, I did that. the pictures are taken with both screens on 100%
I guess my screen is just not as bright as others :/
Also, under Settings -> Display, make sure that "Auto Adjust Screen power" is disabled... this option tries to save some battery by lowering the brightness when the image displayed is brighter : It can be useful in movies but it's just useless and annoying when you're browsing or reading.
PS : And SuperAMOLED+ is not supposed to be brighter than sAMOLED, it's the same without the pentile matrix. When samsung announced an improvement in battery life and brightness they were still comparing it to LCD screens from a few years ago.
thanks bluescreenjunkie, that setting actually helped (a bit).
and yes, your probably right about samsungs claims as well, I probably subconsciously interpreted samsungs claims the best way possible ... (so I had a reason to go buy it).
thanks for your input.
well it is possible to increase the brightness but it takes some development, like supercurrio did for the 2.3.3 kernel for the nexus s and cm7 sgs1 kernel with the voodoo app.
Dont know if hes gonna do the same for the sgs2, i really like it on my sgs1 for sure.
he increased the brightness? well that explaines it then (as it's running a voodoo kernel) .

New update and poor image quality.

Just wondering if anyone else noticed yet...
Before the new update you could switch power modes and notice a major decrease in image quality in power savings mode, then notice it get a lot better once switched to balance mode or normal...
Well with the new update it seems to be stuck in the poor image quality mode that it gave before while in power savings mode. Also switching modes has no effect at all on image quality.
You can only get good colors now with super IPS mode turned on.
Maybe it is just your TFP, I had no such issue before or after the update.
Maybe you just didnt notice... Before the update it clearly adjusted brightness and contrast of the screen when in power saving mode...
It no longer does this and seems to be stuck with low contrast and washed out colors. I had no problems before the update because I would use it on balanced mode which let the colors out of the bag. But now with the new update every mode looks washed out.
I noticed that too. I don't know if it is the lower or higher quality, but it doesn't matter that much. All I care about is this stupid dead/stuck pixel.
I think it did adjust brightness but I am not sure it adjusted "quality". And not everyone is going to notice or see a difference because if some people always use auto-brightness then I don't think their screens every changed when they switched power modes (I don't recall my friend's changing).
So while I do think you might be correct that the new update has stopped the screen from changing brightness when you switch between power modes, I am not at all sure about the quality.
I wonder if we can assign screen brightness and quality to the power settings somewhere now? (or could before?)
I remember hearing months ago that Nvidia had this new idea to save battery life with the whole dynamic contrast and brightness thing.
But after using the device as an ereader for a while, the constant flickering was more than I could bare.
I'm glad its gone, now I can read in peace. I didn't notice any change in quality. Color temp perhaps...
No this is not what im talking about, It would change the image quality... not just the brightness...
Making images more detailed and colors more vivid. But its gone now, strange and kinda of sucky...
Any TFP users that knows what im talking about please chime in.
Update:
It seems that the tegra 3 auto image quality is working (not in the modes but according to what your viewing) but I really wish they would just take it out all together..
If you have a dark colored wallpaper your colors will seem washed out because its adjusting the brightness, contrast and colors to be weaker.
If you have a white bright wallpaper your colors will be more vivid, sharper and screen brighter...
This is why the homescreen may appear washed out to some, and others dont see it. It all depends on what colors your viewing.

I see what you mean.i just updated for the very first time. Its not poor image quality but when i hit my buttons it doesn't do anything screen stays the same.
Are you able to compare it with another device? Try to have the same icon on your home screen on each device. For me the TFP is noticeable different (even with a white wallpaper). I compared opera, market and google music icons, they seem to have less color and appear washed out on the TFP.
I am glad you noticed what I am talking about with the modes.
Screen brightness adgusts on mine even with auto brightness on which is expected to help battery life, but I see no change in quality of images on mine.

Before the update it most defiantly changed the brightness and image quality in low power mode. But not it does not and appears to be stuck in bad image quality mode, If you did not notice this before the update then you wont be able to notice the poor image quality unless you compare it to another android device.
Notice how the colors are off and appear washed out in comparison.
Not sure if I agree. I spent quite a bit of time examining the picture quality prior to the update. I do not see any significant difference in picture quality now.
I have a pretty good eye for picture quality (I was part of a team who set the picture quality for KURO televisions).
I am very pleased with the picture performance of the Prime. What I would love to see is local dimming......

I think he is finally on to something for once..lol. He is correct in the sense that the major change in contrast from balanced or normal mode to power savings is not apparent anymore. I described this change in contrast and detail in the first week Prime was received. Its not in permanent poor image quality though or power savings look. Before you could hit power savings mode and instantly see the screen contrast change, it wouldn't look as detailed. at first it would look like the brightness dropped a lil but its actually the contrast being adjusted. the icons would have a cartoonish look to them. then once you press balanced or normal mode it would instant switch back. NOW, there seems to be no change at all. like its stuck in either balanced or normal mode color scheme. I just switched various wallpapers, light and dark and colorful ones. its all the same. But there is no loss in quality though of pictures. we just don't see the change anymore immediately. of course when hitting super ips+ mode the colors and screen brightness gonna jump up. it's from the dramatic increase in screen brightness. which for me is too bright, especially at night time.
Good find though Jzen. I didn't notice until you made this thread. as I never use powersavings mode. I only noticed the change in the beginning because it was so prevalant. now the switch isn't anymore. Maybe like he said Tegra3 is doing it all automatically. I can't get it to look like the powersavings mode look like before though. Display still looks as great as it did before. just now the contrast doesn't immediately drop when putting it in powersavings mode. it is seeming like battery life has increased even more though somehow. if this is related to situation mentioned, then its a good thing as there's no loss in quality or contrast. Super ips+ mode is a battery drainer though. keep switching it on and off and you'll see battery life drop in multiple numbers. not just gradually one by one. lol.

I would notice as I was the first one to mention the drop in contrast weeks ago in various threads and my Different Performance modes thread. it is not stuck in poor image quality mode. you just thinkn that because you don't see the immediate switch and drop in contrast when going into powersavibgs mode. cutting on super ips+ will look dramatic no matter what before or after update so that can't really been used. you are only partially correct in your find. and that is there is no drop on contrast anymore. To me it seems as if its stuck in the balanced or normal mode look from before. cause before when contrast dropped in powersavings, all the icons would look funny and catoonish looking. now it just looks normal no matter what mode you in or wall paper you using.

corrrect but if people never switched the modes before then it'll be hard for them to notice there is no longer a drop in contrast when going into powersavings mode. its all looks great now what mode you in. maybe it does it very slowly and gradually in powerssvings mode so the change won't be so noticeable like before. either way Best Display by far of any tablet.
This is definitely not true for me. It is correct that the switching feature is gone, but it is not stuck in low quality mode. my screen looks as awesome as before. maybe you were in powersaving mode before updating and this is another updater bug?

it is not a bug it is a feature seriously this is really intended, but maybe a bit buggy...
I notice my sig's image looks very blurry in the browser on the Prime than from the browser on my desktop PC.
My PC res is 1920x1080, with the prime having a lower res shouldn't the sig look better only bigger?
I ran the firmware update almost immediately after using my prime for the first time and connecting to my wifi. Didn't even think to look at images through it yet.
OT: I thought the clouds on the background image move. Perhaps I have been wrong from loving all the videos of this online. Will there ever bee a desktop background to have such a feat?
Ok this is my post from few days. So am not crazy? You noticed the same thing?
got a question about the screen. Some times I can sense and see that despite of auto brightness off that the screen adjusts its brightness by itself. It is a little change but my sharp eyes can see this... Do you have a similar thing? it looks like prime adjust the contrast / brightness by it self even if autobrightness mode is off. it happenes while watching youtube, browsing www or playing. it happenes like this on all 3 performance modes but it is more aggresive on battery mode (power saving mode)
Do you notice the similar thing?
i just recieved another update for my prime. The "feature" of brightness instability while scolling seem to be fixed, but yes - after using the power save mode and changing the background image i noticed a really poor color/compression in all backgrounds i set, doesnt matter which one. Restart and changing the modes to high performance or balanced doesnt help, same with setting up a live wallpaper for a while..

Color saturation & accuracy

If you're colorblind, please disregard this thread. Rate this thread to express how you deem the color saturation and accuracy of the LG G6's display. A higher rating indicates that you think that color accuracy is very high and saturation is excellent.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
The LCD is fairly color accurate all considering. This screen is very close to what I achieve using a hardware color calibrate with my work machines. The reds are not too red (faux saturation) and the cooler tones show up as prominently.
It's just a shame I can't hook up a hardware calibrator to it to test it.
Solid color accuracy
I am coming from a OnePlus 3T, so when first firing up the G6 I was a little disappointed. I couldn't believe how much more vivid the AMOLED screen was compared to the LCD. Well, now that I have been using the G6 exclusively for the past two days, I am growing quite fond of this screen. The colors are quite accurate and precise, just not as vivid/saturated as what I was looking at for the past 6 months. Liking this phone more and more each day.
The screen color temperature is definitely on the cool side, certainly higher than 6500K.
It is not pleasant at first for me. I've been using Nexus 6P on sRGB mode for more than a year, and the color saturation on the G6 under default, out of the box settings is disheartening.
To somehow mitigate this, what I did was to enable ComfortView, set at Low Setting. It's far from perfect, but that's better than nothing.

From what I saw side by side compared to the S8+ at full brightness, I could see the whites having a more pinkish hue very slightly than the S8+. The S8+ having brighter highlights. Obviously, the S8+ also has deeper blacks, more saturated, and viewing angles are much better because of its AMOLED display. Other than that, the overall range of colours seemed fairly close between the G6 and S8+.
Not sure who will see this but I think the G6 LCD screen compared to an amoled like the one's on the oneplus 3/3t/5 and the s8/s8+ is just better in certain scenarios. There are some people who might be audiophile esque and want high fidelity and things like that. And there might be some people who like bass boosted beat headphones and other things like that which are not accurate at all but are enjoyable on a certain level. If you like big bass sound and you are that kind of person then you will like the amoled screen but I am personally not. I like knowing that what I see on my screen is what it is supposed to look like.
For instance the other day I was looking at a picture of the fifty shades of gray poster. It is supposed to be black and gray but it had a colored tint to it on the s8 compared to a g6 which looked as it should. All I am saying is that there are going to be times when the s8 because it pops colors so much will make what you see innacurate. And that might bother you or it might not. But it bothers me.
Exactly what Scape said. Tech people who know their stuff want accurate color reproduction and analytic sound. The wide mass wants flashy Colors and boomsound. Easy people rate phones by how saturated the phone looks. The more saturation = the better. This is complete BS for people who have knowledge about Electronics. Its like comparing people who buy a Classic car and put Chrome rims on it not caring for the paint because "CROME RIMZ M8". Where there are also people which buy a classic car, care to make it look as original as possible and know every part of their car.
The 2nd. Car may look boring to people, but its quality and worthwise extremely preferable. For example a natural Color reproduction can help when taking photos with the G6. If you take a photo on the Amoled Screen of a Galaxy, and then open it on your calibrated IPS, you will be flashed about how different it looks then on the phone. Thats not what you want.
Regarding the Bass... Well i like perfect color recreation but i hate neutral speakers or headphones, im quite a basshead but i still want a good clarity, deep stage and low noise.

I bought G6 after iP6S+ and I'm really disappointed from display over all. Blue is on G6 boosted as hell. At home I have calibrated displays and iPhone is much more closer. I can't watch photos (photographer) on G6 because of it. Even automatic brightness control is not ok for me. It's still dimmer than I want. LuxLite solved that but colors are terrible.

This is bad news for me, I find the G6 screen beautiful (I am under 7.0) and I do not like at all the rendering amoled screens, precisely because of the saturated colors..
I found on 7.0 that the flesh tones on netflix and terrarium tv were way washed out.looked like everyone never saw the sun lol Na just saying I think LG just corrected the saturation a little bit to not make things so washed out looking. The reds are a little darker also instead of a orangey yellow tint. And like before the greens were not as dark .kinda reminded me of a mint or pastel green. Now on Oreo it is a true green and red.
Is there any app or any online guides to correct the LG G6 color accuracy and get true neutral white balance?
I have s8 and G6. I hate Amoled with that compotish colors. White is not white. Ever with pink or blue or yellow. Amoled is like woman with silicon tits. Far from reality. For me LG and Sony make most better displays.
Does anyone use this? I did for a while. I found it very good at adjusting the blues making them a bit darker FB looks much better IMO after I adjusted it

Question Display of the s23 ultra worse than of the s21 ultra

Hello,
Have since 03.02.2023 the s23 ultra. I noticed the first time that the colors are not quite as good. I then compared it with my s21 ultra and indeed the colors of the s23 ultra are not as color intensive. They shine less. Have made the same settings on both smartphones.
Unfortunately, this can not be captured on pictures very well. If you look at the picture from a YouTuber, you can see what I mean in the blue area.
Has no one noticed this yet?
Best regards
yeah noticed the same thing, but I was coming from a OnePlus 5.
color are washed out and feels like there a white film .
Coming from a S21ULTRA... I'm not seeing the difference. Play with the display calibration - mine are set the same way and look the same, a tad brighter on the new phone.
Coming from s21u I find it perfectly fine but I also always use my phone with the natural setting, not vivid setting so maybe that's why.
Honestly, looking at your pic I feel like your s21 almost had some sort of haze filter on it by looking at the "white" area. Which makes the blues sort of darker too. Hard to tell really from a pic.
But what I can tell you is that I still find the s23u screen as splendid as the s21u
My Note 10 screen looks better than my s23u
The longer I have the s23u the more I am considering returning it.
On mine the colors are pretty fine, on the left the crop of the S23U screen and on the right the target.
On the left is what my camera sees, looking with my eyes I see mostly the same colors, no exactly but nothing to be worried about. This is the most objetive test I tried to do.
Coming from an S22U, I like this S23U much more... and something more to add, this is the first firmware and for sure It will be improved, but this is the first time I get a firmware from Samsung that doesn't have so many issues like the other Galaxies Samsung released in the past.
The configuration of my screen is this:

Completely agree there's a few threads on samsung and reddit talking about it. Some say it's new display tech that changes room to room. I'm not sure what it is but I hate it lol. Compared to my s21 it lacks the punch, depth, sharpness, color gamut. It has nothing to do with setting we can change at the moment from what I can find. It's driving me crazy how off it is. I thought I had a lemon of a display or something. Someone in another said he checked on multiple s23u and they all had the same look

Yes , but most people here are comparing it to other Samsung devices which used to have more saturated colors , but iPhone have always ben washed out since start , so you should see it as an upgrade switching to S23 , but from Samsung to Samsung you will feel a little bit downgraded
but what actually happened is Samsung decided to go for a more accurate and natural colors instead of punchier vibrant colors as before

This is the first thing I also noticed. I've already mentioned this on forums, I thought that my phone was defective, so I wanted to return, and then i went to local shops and saw that all s23u's are the same...
Looks great to me in natural. I hate the blown out over saturated colors that Samsung used to use. I think it looks better than my S22U did.
I remember going from an LG G3 to an S7E and was like, my god these colors are oversaturated. LOL. I came to kind of like it that way, but still recognized it's not particularly "accurate" compared to some of the less vibrant displays from other manufacturers. Compared to my S20+ it doesn't seem much different. The actual display panel and technology seems much improved, but the colors seem very similar.
The adapting to lighting conditions seems to be key. Sometimes the screen looks great, and others it's way too warm or cold. Could it be a new polarizing filter? It does seem better after the recent update, but still is not as vibrant or as consistent as the S22U.
S23U have great screen but default have more natural colors compare to previous models. Color vibrant can be change.
For me this is good change, more eyes friendly
My s23 ultra has a slight red tint in the middle.. anyone else?
i did notice that it changes based on where i am or time of day - sometimes it can be quite punchy and contrasty others is quite washed - you can esp notice it in the greys/whites etc
i think it is this self adapting tech
doesnt bother me to death but yea its happening
I noticed this coming from an S22U as well. Viewing angles are poorer -- when you tilt the phone slightly downwards there's a green hue that appears quickly at the bottom. I sold and rebought like four to five sets and they all had the same "issue" too to varying extents.
Partly as a result of this I feel that colour uniformity is not as good on the S23U. On a pure white background, I feel that there are certain parts of the screen that have a different tint from the other parts. This was also apparent in most of the sets I sold and rebought.
My first S23 Ultra also had a "Mura" pattern near the status bar as though the status bar icons were burnt in. I guess they loosened quality control this year because the last time I had issues with the screen was the Galaxy S6
I hope it won't be offtopic if I mention base S23 (not ultra). So I had the impression that the color reproduction was a bit below my expectations. What's funny - standard wallpapers are great to present this problem, it's a really good benchmark.
So I set the blue planet (attached) as a wallpaper/lock screen on two phones, my old S20 FE 5G and new S23. On S23 gradients are not smooth. Period. It's enough to tell if the panel has good color reproduction or not. Same wallpaper on S20 FE 5G looks better (S23 has worse color reproduction). I don't have a third phone to take a photo of how it looks.
Ps. one minor thing to notice; when I wake up screens, both displays perform comparable and in both cases gradients on wallpapers do not look smooth, but after unlocking phones it changes. S20 FE 5G seems to render nicer colors and gradients become smooth. On S23 though, gradients are still not smooth (looks like color palette limitation or something). So I don't have a clue if this is hardware or software issue. I have only few days to decide if I return S23 or keep it.
Pss. I checked the webp file and it's perfectly fine, it looks super nice on my MacBook or my external display.
