[Q] Sprint GS4 SPH-L720T - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

Hello, I'll start off by saying.. i didn't search the tmobile forum and I deserve any unkind words expressed for this. I am ashamed and yet i continue typing!
I just went through the process of downgrading my modem on this sprint device in order to sim unlock it. I now have a 3G t-mob signal working as expected. However, there's still a ton of sprint **** on the device. My client would like to remain stock, and thus, im wondering if I can simply load the latest t-mob stock rom on this device while maintaining functionality and, of course, the sim unlock.
If the answer is no, can anyone suggest a "stock-like" rom (kitkat/lollipop doesnt matter, she's a former iPhone user) which will meet the above requirements?
thanks in advance and i apologize for failing to search, bedtime!

Cross Carrier ROM flash?

I have searched this forum and the net and could not get a definative answer. Possibly someone knowledgeable and experienced can answer this question?
Is the “base” OS the same for each CDMA carrier? If so, can you update using a “similar” carrier Rom and then soft rest before it installs the carrier specific add-ons? Example: Flash Alltel ROM to US Cellular 6800.
Thanks!
yes, you can, if you really wanted to. chances are, the customizations will get run at one time or another though. you might not be able to get around it. just remember that you have to unlock your phone first using a hard spl. but yeah, it could be done. is there a specific reason why you want the alltel rom for your USC 6800?
I would also recommend against this, and the reason why is if their carrier customization ever starts, now or down the road, you are screwed. Since USCC has no stock rom, getting the settings back where they belong is a real pain in the ass.
It still voids your warranty just like any custom rom would, so you may as well run one of the custom roms that have more memory, more recent versions of WinMO, and GPS enabled.
All in all, there is never a good reason to flash a carrier rom, unless its your carrier and you are returning it for warranty support. Otherwise the carriers roms are locked down, less memory, their bloatware and less options for you.
BTC
Thank you both for the responses!
The reason behind the question is that my carrier is small (great company) and they don't have the ability to offer/supply upgrades, and HTC refuses to even let me register so I have no avenue for an upgrade to 6.1. My carrier has purchased the 6800's through another carrier and I have not been able to get a solid answer as to what carrier it is based on.
I very much want access to 6.1 and stand alone GPS, not to mention the better BT stack and threaded SMS. I was hoping that I could use a "base" upgrade from a similar carrier and avoid the carrier add-ons during the upgrade with the soft reset. The carrier that supplied the 6800's has been narrowed down to Alltel or US Cellular. Alltel has an upgrade, US Cellular does not. At least not that I can find.
Thank you again!
Your issue will come down to whether you can find a compatible carrier cab then.
Use QPST to back up your phone's programming, and copy down every field in every section of EPST, this will at least give you a base to go back to.
Honestly if you follow the route of the custom roms, use QPST to restore the phone's programming and then fix any EPST differences, your phone should just work. You may have to recreate the dialup connection so that it can still get on the internet, but if it doesn't work, there isn't any going back.
So, you might mention what carrier you have and see if anyone else from the same carrier has had any success. Flying blind is dangerous, usually there will be someone else who is in the same boat that has taken the plunge and can probably assist you in how to do it for your carrier.
BTC
BTC,
Thank you again for the words of wisdom which are points well taken. Unfortunately, I have only found one other person that shares the carrier and the 6800 and he's at the same starting point I am.
We are "comparing" notes now and will hopefully come up with a solution. I have (I believe) downloaded QPST but have not played with it yet. I guess you could say I was being lazy and hoping for an easy option. I guess it's time to jump in the water...
Again, many thanks!
Tim
Here is a decent article that talks about how to use QPST (in a different context, but it at least walks you thru the basics you will need).

I've been in the same situation with a small carrier. Illinois Valley Cellular to be specific. We get our phones from other carriers too. I talked to tech about upgrades, they told me to do whatever works. I'm using an unlocked bootloader with a custom ROM. Thought they did tell me someone did the same with a Sprint stock ROM to get GPS working. I used QPST to back up everything and saw some traces of Cellular South in the programming too!
Thanks to all that responded! I guess I have lots of "studying" to do.

[Q] Unlocked phone question

First of all, let me say that I'm not trying to break any laws here. I am simply curious about some technical aspects.
Q: What kind of tweaks would be involved to make a CDMA phone from one carrier work with another CMDA carrier? E.G., A droid running on Sprint or an EVO on Virgin Mobile.
I started researching about this, but I can hardly find any info. Are unlocked phones not that popular anymore or do carriers just not support them?
From what I gathered, one would have to change PRLs, install new phone, telephony, and mms APKs, and probably change MEID/ ESN and possibly flash new radios and have an unlocked phone of course.
How close am I here?
TY in advance.

Unlocked phones are very popular but CDMA phones are not when it comes to unlocking. Ultimately you have to get the company to agreebto add the phone to its network which it has the right to refuse lt. You would need to change the ESN which is not legal anywhere and why you won't find the info on XDA.

T-MOBILE note users...information needed !!!

T-mobile note users ....
I'm posting this thread as a request for information today.....let me explain.
Within the past few weeks, many members have reported sim card errors on their tmo devices after root and flash of custom roms.
I personally know about 5 devices within the week that have suffered this failure.....3 of which, have been recovered by downgrading to Gingerbread .....
I'm sure there are many more sim issues we haven't heard about, as they likely haven't posted.
My intent here, is to have as many tmo users as possible, post your flash success or failure, in an attempt to prevent more sim failure issues.
Although I'm an ATT note user, I'm willing to help monitor and collect data here, so future users won't suffer the same fate.
2 of these failed devices were sent for repair, even though they were only days old, and worked perfectly prior to root and flash.
So please, if you are using the T-mobile network........please post your history and results.
Together we will likely find the cause .
And perhaps generate enough attention to the issues, that a fix can be found...
I am not attempting to cause panic, but I feel we need to fix the problem now, before we have dozens of affected units, rather than just a few.
Many thanks in advance ....g

I would mention that many t-mobile subscribers cannot get good data and voice while using the at&t version of the note. With the choice of an at&t and a t-mobile model, you should get the t-mobile model -- you will be happier in the long run.
Happy T-mobile user

I bought an AT&T note off craigslist about a month ago. It was unlocked, before I handed over the cash I put my T-mobile sim in and called a friend he said it sounded great so I bought it. I did a couple of speed tests with it and usually get between 3 and 6 mbps down and a lot slower up. I've had no problems, everything works great including GPS. It's running ICS 4.04 stock AT&T ROM and the baseband is unknown. I don't know who unlocked and set it up but they did a great job as far as I'm concerned. YMMV
off-topic, deleted.
It's all good ranger ....
Any and all info on the T-Mobile network while using the ATT note is welcome ....even the success stories.
I did request both in the OP, as I feel that we need both sides of the user responses to nail this thing down.
I do appreciate your response, and ask you for any assistance you can provide here.
This problem is so odd .....as it's not a brick ....but yet it is ....g
I sold my note to a TMo user...called them today(two days after) and they said it was working amazing....it was rooted and unlocked by an amazingly awesome person though(haha jkjk). The guy never rooted before and said the speed tests were rocking his gfs GS3 in TMo and the clarity of the call was great as well....ait could be a root issue or ROM issue though...
As far as unlocking if the pgones unlocked any way except for calling ATT customer care there is always that risk...plus a three minute phone call and giving someone your imei shouldnt be too much hassle .. So theres that dudes exoeruence from someone that knows what they are doing(kind of)...
The rom I left him on was AOCP CP3 by the collective jsyk

I unlocked my phone from ebay, running the latest blackstar Rom, and im getting speeds that my old T989 get. No sim card issues.

noting the unlock method here.....
I believe you are right.....We have many service unlock options, but only one that is safe....and thats the carrier method...
could this be as simple as users not unlocking the sim prior to root and flash ??? or an improper unlock ???
I'm hoping we can get some users in here to clarify that possibility for us.
Many thanks for bringing that up....g
Thank you Rob....
I appreciate the reply, and I'm glad your device is working as it should...
Several others are not so lucky....g

Users on the T-Mobile network, are losing the ability too see or access the sim card, after rooting and flashing the device with a custom rom.
Generally they are flashing ICS, but we also have some users reporting sim loss while using GB roms as well.
We know a few things that are leading to a possible cause.
The first is the carrier offset (my term for t-mobile users with an ATT device )
The second is the need for carrier unlock for the device to be used at all with t-mobile.
The third is the inability to restore "any " sim activity after the failure....(although a few users have been successful after a complete unroot and downgrade to GB .
Although I haven't yet found a pattern in this ....I have reason to believe we are seeing a carrier related lockout of some kind, as the sim functions fine in other devices, and the device functions normally minus it's ability to detect the sim or any network.
Perhaps a good next step, would be to re-lock the device to the carrier again, after a complete stock restore of the device.
I wish that we had an affected device to try this with, but unfortunately, the affected users are returning the device for repair or replacement.
Not all users will, as they need a working device immediately, and are trying desperately to restore functionality.
That being said, I'm hoping this thread will draw an affected user here, so we can explore more aggressive, and hopefully effective solutions.
I can't ask anyone to risk a device beyond their willingness to try, and with some proactive thoughts from our fantastic user base, we will crack this problem open, and create a fix.
We all know the risks involved in flashing firmware images, but since we are now crossing not only the root/flash barrier, we are adding the carrier change into the mix. And that brings it's own unique set of challenges to the table.
I sincerely appreciate any and all help, in my search to help our note users succeed in fixing the ghost in this machine ....g
I know this is a noob question but I've been reading all these t-mo service/I717 threads cuz I'm thinking of doing this. Does rooting the phone unlock it? I'm on the liquid jb rom.

I would like to echo what rangercaptain said earlier in the thread, regarding the fact that the SGH-I717 was never designed to run on the T-Mobile network.
And although we have virtually identical hardware and operational features, clearly something is different enough to cause this issue.
And I "do not " believe it is user error.
In the meantime, I would advise any user thinking about converting the ATT note to use on the T-Mobile network, to think very hard before attempting to do so......at least, until a verified and working solution can be found.
Ultimately, we need a bone stock ATT note, and a t-mobile user brave enough to try the process repeatedly, until the cause is identified, by eliminating one process at a time ...g

Rooting a device simply gives it's user the administrator rights needed to access the protected system and data sections of the device, that are normally reserved to the factory, carrier, and programming engineers of the software.
It does nothing to unlock you from your carrier.
That is done by contacting the carrier, and requesting that service.
It is also possible to be unlocked by a third party, but clearly their are risks involved in doing so while using the ATT note on the t-mobile network.
We are working very hard to correct the current "no sim card present" issue ...g

I have been running the AT&T i717 note on the T-Mo network since Tomin figured out how to get the 4g working, many months ago. I have not had problems with voice quality or sim card issues. I have run the Saurom GB roms, Goldie's Only1, many ICS roms, and now am on the stock T-Mo rom with the Blaze ICS modem.Tried all the modems, and Blaze works best for me. YMMV. I got a new sim from T-Mo to enable wifi calling. My data averages 3-5 megs, upload 1-1.8 megs, but at work I regularly hit 14 meg download. But like everyone, the speed is erratic, but functional for everything I do, including streaming netflix. My speeds were faster and more consistant with the GB roms, but the ICS speeds are plenty fast. I unlocked my phone with cellunlocker.com I think was the service. Nothing but a success story with my AT&T note on T-Mobile. And I get to keep my unlimited, unthrottled $5.99/month grandfathered data plan with 4g (if I used a "known" to T-Mo 4g phone I would have to upgrade. The AT&T note is "unknown" to T-Mo, If I got the T-Mo note it would trigger new data charges). For me, this is the point of the whole excersize. I have been lucky, and the Phoenix area has good coverage for me as far as T-Mo. This has been my experience.

Tethering and Wi-Fi Calling on T-mobile Using Developer Edition?

Hey guys,
If this has been answered previously, then please forgive me, but I wasn't finding anything definitive in the related threads. I've got an unlocked Developer Edition that I plan on using on T-Mobile. I really wanted the extra space and I *believe* San Diego is refarmed and so should work reasonably well (although if I get Edge speeds I'm gonna be bummed).
Anywho, has anyone figured out whether there is:
1) any way to get WiFi calling working? Not positive I'll need but wondering if I need to flash a T-Mobile modem or rom to get that to work on the DE version
2) if tethering will work if my plan supports it (it does - I've done it on my T-Mobile Galaxy Note II)
3) does flashing one's modem cause the phone to show as "tampered" or "modified"? My preference would be NOT to add the bloat unless I'm going to lose out on the aforementioned features OR if the signal ends up being dramatically affected.
Lastly, has anyone else had any experience with the Developer Edition on T-Mobile in San Diego? Wondering what to expect.
Thanks in advance for any and all help!

To answer your questions.
1.Quickest is to flash a ROM, try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2266025. Its stock (missing apps like calculator, flashlight etc due to bootloader unlock). It comes in odexed and deodexed flavors. There is a way to flash radios but I havent researched it enough.
2. Tethering will work once you pay for the add-on through T-Mobile
3. Im not particularly sure at which stage it changes to Tampered. But I noticed it after flashing a custom kernel. So maybe it occurs after unlocking the boot loader or flashing custom recovery. This does not affect the phone performance in any way that I know of. Im not sure what relevance this question has to the topic discussed tho.
Regards
I think the jury is still out on the question of whether or not the radio hardware is actually different between the TMo version and the Dev version. I, personally, don't believe they are physically different. HTC probably sat down with TMo and said, "by the time they get S-Off it won't matter anyhow".

[Q] Verizon-Sprint GSIII

So I looked around the threads on both Verizon, and Sprints side of the fences for an answer to this question and couldn't find any thing.
I have a Verizon Galaxy S3, and my contract with Verizon recently came to a close. I want to switch to sprint due to pricing and other options, but I don't have the money to drop on a new phone at the time, so I have been looking into unlocking the phone to work with Sprint, however I haven't much of luck...
That's when I came to XDA. While I was looking around the forum, I got to thinking.
Is there any possible way that I could take the Sprint version of the Samsung Galaxy S3's ROM, and load it onto my Verizon Galaxy? And has anyone tried this yet?
It's essentially the same hardware, right? To the best of my understanding, the only difference in the phones would be software related according to the carrier.
I am really struggling with this one, and I have witnessed the vast knowledge and great work by this forum before, so I am hoping I'll be able to find the help I need.

Verizon and Sprint do use the same cdma networks but will not activate each others devices on their network so the answer is no I do not think this is going to be possible for you.

Well I did talk to Sprint, and Sprint said they would be willing to activate an unlocked Galaxy. It's just the unlocking process that I am unsure of.
