[Q] play store just stopped working today - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Have kindle fire HDX 7 running 4.5.2 rooted with gapps installed everything been working great for about a month now tried to use play store this morning and it won't work just get a white screen with spinning cirlce and if I slide from the left it just says redeem settings help and about. Tried clearing app data and reinstall did not help any ideas????

Just posted this on the Fire Phone forum, but it applies to all Fire products:
This is an Android issue not a Fire [Device] issue. See this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-phone/general/google-play-services-crashing-t3084355 Further tinkering with your Fire [Device] will not fix it. If you go to the google play services page of the play store, you'll see that the app is awash in 1 star reviews from people with lots of different [devices]. Google forced an update, and it broke stuff.

Reverting to Play Services 6.7.76 (1745988-036) fixes the issue temporarily until another update arrives.
But for G+ to work, you will also need to downgrade them as well.

Yeah, it's a very temporary fix. I tried doing that on my Fire Phone, and Google just pushed the update again which re-broke everything. Also, if you reboot your device it seems to push the update as well. I know that trying to use Google Hangouts will automatically bring on the update, because it can't be used without it anymore.

The same happened to me today with my HDX 8.9 3rd Gen. No updates our installs possible with Google play, all I get is a spinning white circle. First I thought this was an effect of the xposed/hdxposed framework. So I uninstalled it - with no effect. Play store bug persists.

Yeah, I tried the basic (no root necessary) method of using an earlier version and trying to stop it from auto-updating already. It was extremely temporary, as in 5 minutes worth of temporary. Some of the other suggestions appear to involve having root access which I don't have. So, that's a no go.
For me, it doesn't really matter so much, because I have almost no vested interest in getting Gapps running on my phone. There's nothing that I need from the Google Play Store, and I refuse to tip toe around my own phone just to keep it on there. I had just installed it because it was possible to do it. When it started going wonky, my tinkering brain had to at least try to see if it could be fixed. I'm personally done playing with it now. I'm just going to wait for Google to fix their own mess. I may try re-installing down the road once they've gotten their act together.

Odd, I don't know what it did differently, aside from reverting via Titanium, but that's all I have done & mine has stuck since that day. In fact, after doing that, I reverted the updated apps that require the newer GPSvs & everything is working again just fine. I haven't been auto-updated once since then.
At any rate, has anyone pulled a logcat during the crashes & refresh failures to see whats going on? Maybe something that an Xposed module could easily fix.

logcat of failure
logcat of failure attached.

Reverting via Titanium applies its rooted app freeze I believe? Thanks for mentioning either way as I'm going to need to do that.

This is what I did to prevent the defective update
I seem to have solved the issue on my Rooted HDX by doing the following:
Uninstall Play Services
Install Play Services 7.0.99
Load Terminal Emulator
Issue these commands:
$ su
# cd /data/app
# type > com.google.android.gms-2.apk
# chattr +i com.google.android.gms-2.apk
Now, the older play services 7.0.99 is active as com.google.android.gms-1.apk. Every time Google tries to install an upgraded one as com.google.android.gms-2.apk it fails, because it's an immutable file. No more updates, even after a reboot. I used ES File Explorer to observe /data/app to see that Google does still download the .tmp file with the new gms, but then it can't rename it.
Good luck!!!
EDIT: I'm running Play Store v5.3.6 on my HDX. Download GMS 7.0.99 HERE.

can you guide me regarding it ? would be nice
thanks

Search for Busybox in Play Store, install that, then open it and hit Install. Now the CHATTR command should work.

I will let you know if it does updates or not

does it conflicts?

Thx Cevyn, the commands worked but I got a parsing error when trying to install the Play Services apk. I must have a different HDX version than you do and I was able to find a version of the apk that installedl. But thanks for this fix none the less!

Followed this guide and it worked great. No command window, but it's doing the same thing really.
http://topusefulsolutions.com/409593/google-play-services-7-3-28-keeps-stopping

My HDX Play Services has not successfully updated since I ran these commands.
I had tried the suggestion on http://topusefulsolutions.com and my Play Services still updated, leading me to work out another way to prevent it and start this thread.

It may be a good idea to post a reversal guide to this to help out people who eventually want the updates back when and if google ever corrects this issue.

Google Play Update?

I know it's not absolutely necessary, but is there any way to update the Market to Google Play on the NT? Would it be as simple as sideloading an apk?
I realize the Market will probably function fine without the update, I'm simply curious.
Thanks!

I couldn't get my marketplace to work after Play came out, and I updated using an .apk, and it still wouldn't work. I kept getting the window that said something about needing to tie it to my google account, and when I clicked "Yes" to do that, it kicked me back out of the app.

My market updated itself to Google play two days ago automatically. Everything is working as normal. I am on CM7 alpha12 though, but I would assume it would also update on the stock rom. Maybe you can go into market and do a check for updates and it will update market app

My market just updated, but only after I cleared the market app's cache AND data. I had tried clearing the cache only, and it didn't update. After I cleared cache, data, and force stopped the app; when I started market again it updated to "play store".
Side note: I couldn't stand looking at the new logo, so I edited the shortcut on the desktop to display the "correct" Android market logo.

I am getting the same error of "You must add an account to the device to continue. Do you want to add one now?" and when I click on "Yes" or "No", it closes the app. Anyone have a fix? Already tried uninstall/reinstalling, clearing all cache, etc, and force stop...nothing.
Are you installing a new google play apk or the old market? Everytime i installed gapps after foashing a rom, the market just updated itself to google plau without putting my account info back in.

I'm running 1.4.1 rooted and it auto updated to Google Play a few days ago and I never had a problem. Market continued normally for me.
Only just started this, but it force closes when updating or downloading. Uninstalled through Titanium. Reinstalled an old APK, updated; no dice! Anyone else getting this? It seems that only updating or downloading forces the crash, browsing isn't a problem.
[edit] I think Google is having issues with the Market, tapping HELP takes me to this page;

If you are still not updated, go into settings/manage apps open up the market, clear cache and data. Then relog into market. It should update within a few minutes.

I'm having this problem too. Just happened recently. Everything worked fine before, but now I cannot access the Google Market or any Google-related apps (Gmail, Music, etc).
I used t-r-i-c-k's root for the Mac (including the OTA update block). Its been working like a charm until this. I did reboot the device, but the B&N update still seems to be blocked correctly (software version still says 9.9.9).
I also noticed that Superuser is no longer accessible. If I manually browse to the Market (via Dolphin), it says Superuser is already installed, but I can't find it on the device through any means.
I also tried downloading the Superuser fix app, as well as GApps (through Dolphin). Both said they were installing, but none of them are actually downloading to the device.
So I'm stuck. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

It sounds like you lost root access and need to re-root. The Market/Play Store doesn't actually inventory what you have on your device, it only keeps a record of what you've installed. Apps that you've removed via the 'manage apps' setting option will continue to appear as installed in the Market/Play Store.

Boot into webOS, then type "webos20090606" (without the quotes) in "just type" . This should bring up the dev mode menu. Make sure that debugging is checked. You should now have root. Boot into android and try again. Also there's an app, root checker or something like that in the playstore, free. The superuser application could also have something to do with that. There are several threads on the subject, but since I haven't had the problem I didn't pay much attention to them. A search should turn up something. Good luck.

Don't bother booting into webOS to fix the problem. webOS has nothing to do with Android. Did it even ask you to allow or deny root access when you started Titanium Backup? If it did and you missed the opportunity to press allow, it will throw up this error. Try a couple things. First, fully kill the app and restart and see if it asks you for root access. If not, then I think it might be something to do with the SU app. SuperUser gives me problems every now and then even on my phone. Try downloading SuperSU and try opening Titanium Backup again. SuperSU should pop up asking you if you want to allow root access.

I've never downloaded BusyBox on my Touchpad and Titanium Backup works fine for me. I'm pretty sure its his Super User app. SuperUser has always been iffy with Titanium Backup. I dont know why but thats the only app I've ever had a problem with even though its not a constant problem. SuperSU in the play store seems a lot better with handling root access than the original SuperUser.

Did nothing from SuperUser pop up and ask for permissions for SuperSU? If not, I'm going to guess you should dirty flash your existing ROM and get SU fixed.
And make sure you checked the md5sum of your existing ROM before flashing.
EDIT: No, do the other thing he recommends. It looks more complete.
Ok, maybe you have a general problem with your TouchPad just not having root access all around. There is another thread in the Q&A section about not getting root access. Try what BIGSimon suggests here:

From what i understand, the gaaps package installer will check build.prop for compatibility, so if we were to install the latest package this wont work ?
Have you any idea if we backed up the firesticks build.prop, pushed a compatible build.prop, installed latest gaaps then re pushed stock build.prop back ?
Forgive me if this is a no hope way of doing this but i have no other idea how.
Thanks for the original solution.

So this only works with Fire Stick 1 not Fire TV 1 running 5.2.1.1?
Edit: the right module is called HDXPosed
Edit #2: installed xposed and HDXPosed and now the market app doesn't close itself anymore. but it doesn't update installed apps. Any idea?
Edit #3: I completely reset my rom using the "format data" option in twrp and now I don't need HDXposed anymore. The market stays open but still closes itself when I try to update / install anything.
I flashed the zip and I configured the account but now when I try to open the Google Play it stays open for a couple of seconds then it closes. Maybe we need the xposed rbox module. I remember it was needed to keep market open on 1st gen rooted FTV.
Anyone?

Firestick, montoya-5.2.1.1-rooted_r1.zip
.
I haven't done anything with Xposed yet. My experience is almost the same as yours. I was able to login, with difficulty. I used a combination of CetusPlay and Ipazzport bluetooth mini mouse/keyboard. All searches showed no result. There were checked marks on some apps that I have installed. Anything I tried to install, crashed the app. I think that one of the problems is that Google automatically updates Gapps and the newer version of Playstore crashes.
To uninstall the Playstore and PlayServices, I had to wipe system and flash the rom again.
I regret not getting a logcat.

EDIT: There was a post somewhere to avoid update. Just change binary attribute using adb making it read only. I tried and it worked. But it was on 1st gen fire tv.
I also use Market helper to improve apps search. It seems works. They just dont get installed.

I installed these apps on my Fire tv 1gen, but can't find a way to start playstore. When I go to manage installed apps, I do see google playstore, I can't find "Run now"

Apps stuck on "Download Pending" in Google Play Store

I bought a used LG G5 ls992 (Sprint). There was no play store on it but there were play services. So, I installed play store on it and used it for 2 weeks. Then, I had to reset the device and install the play store on it., the play store is not letting me update or download any more apps. All the apps get stuck to download pending. I have tried numerous methods of clearing cache and force stopping play store and play services and whatnot. Restarted and reset my phone again. Nothing works. Sometimes, after clearing cache the app status on play store says "Downloading" but even after 3 hours, it doesn't do anything. And mostly, if I stop that app, the next app in line will go to "Download Pending" again. I don't know what to do now. The play store worked the first time so I am not sure what is the problem here.
The phone is currently running on android 6.0.1. One more thing that I should mention, when I bought the phone, I was told not to update it since it has been unlocked and if I update it to 7.0, the phone will be locked again. So, I didn't update the phone. I checked the phone root status and it says the phone is not rooted.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I'm having the same issue with a LG Volt LS 740. I hadn't used it in over a year and it was running stock firmware. Last night I flashed it to Lineage 14.1, Android 7.1.1 with the latest Gapps Stock (Jan 5). Everything seemed to go fine until I went to download apps in the play store. "Download Pending". I cleared cache, data. I reflashed everything, starting over. This time I used an earlier date of Gapps (Dec 18) to see if there was a recent update that was causing a problem. Same result.
I'm going to try searching again tonight.
Like OP said, if anyone knows of any solutions, they would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm looking at this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/huawei-honor-note-8-play-store-stuck-t3658127
It does look like a permissions problem for me. When I click an app it flashes the screen for a second, where it would list permissions needed and ask you to press "accept". Then it says "Download Pending".
I just went through all of the apps that came preinstalled with Lineage 14.1/Google Apps, made sure all of the permissions were granted. Cleared cache/data on Google Play Store, rebooted. Same thing

Did you check again the software update on your lg ?
To fix your play store
1.you much check speed of your Internet
2. Uninstall the update the (Play store)
3. Make sure you G account is sync on
4. update the play store
5. Reboot your lg
6. now open the play store and try downloading the app
if doesn't work maybe your g account have chance to lock it
Hopes that helps you.
It seems Google Play updated apk without some internal services active . So , if your phone is rooted you may use one of those apks on the market which you can have acces to every services of all apk are running on the phone . I tried a few those apks and the more effective and reliable was "My Android Tools " .
Install it and go to settings , to "Broadcast Receiver" . This will send you to "Third Party" broadcast receiver instantly . Here scroll to Google Play and click it . If you don't find here , go to system (on right of it) . All red receivers you'll see it's mean they are not active . Activate all red lines of receivers .
That's it . Problem solved .
I must say I tried on 2 different phones all other methods proposed on the net but anything didn't worked .

I can update some apps and download some apps, but many others are stuck on pending, there isn't even any pattern in the type of apps that are downloadable and not, it's weird!
And just to make sure we are on the same page, is this the google page you enabled the receivers in (marked in red) ?

Yeap , it looks OK .
- Now if those things are OK , try other stuffs shown here like : Google Play settings = always update , go to phone settings , apps management and clean Google Play cache , go to permissions and allow all etc etc
- Don't matter it could be a delay/bug of Google servers . Try later or be patient to update all process . It just happened , sometime to "enjoy" those anoying stucks & pendings .
- Further , I can't be able to propose another tips because it depend on what Android you use , original ROM or custom which mean a stock genuine ROM implemented Gapps and so on .... Personally , I can tell in this moment I have pending one app on Google Play on 2 different phones . All apps were updated , smooth but only one can't be installed . That's it , I''ll wait .

Yesterday I tried to download the same apps with other phones, and the problem persisted (so it's an external problem probably router/wifi/isp), but now somehow I can download any app, the issue is solved for now.. weird
Try disabling Google app, it worked for me on Honor View 10.

Hi,
Often Play Store behaves abnormally while updating apps. You are facing one such problem. But, do not worry. I also faced the same issue once and got it resolved. Here is what you have to do:
1. Open Google Play Store and tap the ‘hamburger’ icon on the top left.
2. Open My apps & games and see if there is an app which is still ‘updating’. Hit ‘STOP’ written inside a green box. All the ongoing updates will stop.
3. After that, download the app which you want to. Most probably your download will begin.
In case it doesn’t start updating, there is more to it:
1. Go to settings and tap on apps.
2. Find Google Play Store and tap on it. App info will appear.
3. Tap on Storage and then tap on ‘Clear Data’
That’s it. Update will surely begin.
Thanks
You need to give right permissions for hard disk to write the files on the hard disk,or maybe your download manager or something is sleeping

Google Play Services in China (Xiaomi/Redmi)

Hi!
I recently bought a Redmi Note 9 4G with a Chinese ROM in China, and as you all understand this limits my accessibility to everything related to Google. The phone is running on MIUI 12, and I'm now desperately trying to get access to everything I could on my phone that I bought back in Europe (such as Android OS, Google Play Services and Play Store as well as syncing to my Google account).
A friend sent me a link with a guide on how to unlock the bootloader and subsequently migrate from a Chinese ROM to a global ROM:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/comments/b4phic
After waiting 168 hours (as required from Xiaomi) I successfully unlocked my bootloader, and then tried to flash my phone according to the instructions in the link above. My phone completely rebooted (as if it was a factory reset), and it seems like I was able to download a few more apps than I was able to before. However, it still clearly states that I do not have Google Play Services, and the entire phone system does not appear to be Android. It is impossible for me to use apps such as YouTube, Facebook, Gmail etc. despite being able to find APK-files and installing the apps. There is also no Google Play Store.
Could anyone please help provide me with some clarity on this? It would be greatly appreciated, thank you!
Post a screenshot of your apps installed, please.
As I know, in general, there should be Google Play Services as well as Google Services Framework in your original ROM.

Here are two screenshots, the first one is from the list of all my apps, while the second one is what pops up when I try to use certain apps. What's even weirder is that apps such as Spotify still work (despite it saying that I need Google Play Services), while other apps such as Gmail won't work. And once again, the problem that I don't have access to Google Play Store remains. Thanks!

I mean that you should find some Google apps in your apps list.
The list should be something like the screenshot as below. Is there really no such apps on your device?
Did you flash global rom?

This is all I see in the app list there. The only "Google" apps that exist are ones I downloaded and installed as .APK-files, and they do not work

I followed the instructions according to the Reddit-post I shared in my first original post, but apparently it seems like I still don't have Google Play Services. Does this mean that I was unsuccessful in flashing to the Global ROM, and what else can I do if the instructions from that post did not work?

You have Google Play Store in the app list. If the Google Play Store works well, you must have Google Play Services on your device and it works well, too.
@einfrein
The most simple method to get "Google Play" installed on phone is to open phone's browser, navigate to Google Play Store and download Youtube app. Once downloaded you get asked whether to install "Google Play" too, or not. Let Google install it.

I have the Google Play Store app because I downloaded the APK and installed it, but it does not work. As soon as I click on the app it opens and closes instantly, without me being able to do anything.

I have the Youtube app as I downloaded its APK, and when I open it indeed says "Get Google Play services - YouTube won't run without Google Play services, which are missing from your device." and gives me an option to "INSTALL". When I click install, the app closes down instantly and there's nothing more I can do.

I downloaded the file but have not been able to open the Gapps on my phone. According to the FAQ, it says to download the package to the device and then start the device in recovery mode. The only options that show up for me are to restart the phone, to delete my data or to connect to the Mi Assistant - not to install Zip / Apply update, as the FAQ states?
I'm not familiarized with that.
