Bootloader unlocking - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, yesterday I just installed on my xperia z2 .726 LP stock, prerooted and with recovery. And I don't know if its good for me or no. And as the lollipop is getting updated, im thinking maybe i should go to 5.1?
The question is: Is it really worth unlocking my bootloader and going for 5.1 or I should stick with stock and with locked bootloader?
What I lose if i unlock my bootloader?
And if its worth it, can you give me the links to do it the safest way, without losing some things

Unlocking your bootloader is safe as long as your not stupid about it
You will lose your warrenty, and some xperia features spesific for the stock rom ( these are permanent because unlocking your bootloader wipes your TA partition where unique information is kept)
You can backup your TA if your device is rooted
(google will help here)

So Is it really worth unlocking my bootloader and going for 5.1 or I should stick with stock and with locked bootloader?
And maybe, if u kind, can you tell me, what rom, kernel, what do you use?

Id rather stay with stock but androPlus kernel
Stock has all the features and the look i need above any commom custom rom
And the custom kernel alows for some aditional customization as well as some patches that alow even more e.g. xposed
(easier to root, recovery is more static you could say)
If you realy dont care about X-Reality, your warrenty and a couple of xperia apps then an unlocked bootloader is for you.

Okay, if I do unlock my bootloader, i lose my warranty, xperia apps, x reality, but doesn`t restoring TA keys, gives me back all of it?
Oh and what about camera?

You lose all that but sony cant tell if you restored your TA or not when you did so yes
Camera quality on stock rom is good but on Ub its somewhat lost however the results are more honnest so to someone who is into photography UB is better
On custom roms its about that of stock, CM based usualy varies depending on the scene.

So I can unlock any time I want and I can relock any time I want. And all functions will be lost/restored if bootloader unlocked/relocked ?

So if I unlock, install androplus and existenz 2.0 Y , will I get much worse camera quality?

1. This only applies if you restore your TA if backed up before unlockimg
2. The camera quality doesnt even drop all too much.

So, camera goes a lot worse in CM roms?
So, I can easily go for TA backup, unlocking and installing existenz with androplus kernel, or even your kernel, if you release it ? ) (camera is important for me) (I want bigger battery life, now its 2days, with 5hrs of sot)

Camera quality isnt lost much on any rom

[Q] Custom ROM & security

Since large part of us might get their Z2s this week (hopefully including me :silly, I'd like to know what options we have to make our Xperias secure with soon-to-arrive custom ROMs.
From what I managed to find, the most convenient option (at least theoretically) would be to:
- unlock bootloader
- flash custom recovery
- flash custom ROM
- reflash stock recovery to prevent lockscreen bypass and adb access in general
- relock bootloader to prevent flashing custom recovery and regaining adb by potential attacker.
- then if needed, reflash recovery online if rooted, reflash new/updated ROM, reflash stock recovery back
Now, I've read that Xperia Z2 (other Zs probably as well) will softbrick with locked botloader and custom ROM/kernel, rendering this method useless. Am I right?
If yes, what other options do we have?
all i know for sure is its more complicated than samsung models n im gonna wait till there a way to root it without messing with the bootloader
-Unlock bootloader
-Flash kernel of the ROM you want (DooMKernel for stock based)
-Boot into the recovery that's baked into the kernel
-Flash the ROM you want
All AOSP ROM's require fastbooting the kernel from the zip (unless stated).

So there is no way to block access to recovery after flashing custom ROM?
Also sorry for probably dumb question (I'm new to Xperias): do you maybe know if current recoveries baked into CM support encryption? I know there is no CM for Z2 yet, I'm asking about current Z series phones.

Well... On newer Xperia's (2012+) you can flash a recovery to the TArecovery partition, so you could remove it I suppose... But if the kernel you are using has a custom recovery baked in (they usually do on Xperia) then you could flash back the stock kernel, if you don't want recovery on stock based ROM. but as far as CM is concerned, you cannot remove recovery.
And yes all CM has recovery baked into Xperia kernels. We'll have official CM support from FXP team as soon as they receive their device too. Good times ahead

Its not so much the unlocking of the bootloader that bothers me, i reckon i could do that. Its more the effects of it, what gets lost, stops working properly etc

You lose the DRM keys. You can't keep the DRM keys if you root as of yet, because you have to unlock bootloader to root, and you can't do TA backup without root. Vicious circle.

That was the one, i knew it was something important. thats why im waiting till there a root without unlocking, i could probably manage without most of it, but i want the bravia engine working and any other screen or audio stuff it affects, altho i was wondering, could you not just redownload the stuff you want and in doing so aquire new keys?? or is it not that simple?

[Q] What do I loose with rooted Z2?

Before I buy the phone I’d like to know which features will be lost by rooting it and unlocking the boot loader? What can be replaced by other ROMs , Xpose modules… apps……Will xframe modules work if it’s rooted but no boot loader unlocked and what are the limitations?
The main one for me is glove mode so I can use any sharp tipped object with it. And FM radio.
Cheers
You normaly lose drm features like xreality... Super vivid... Remote play (backup drm keys before unlocking bootloader) because unlocking bootloader destroy drm keys but these can be re activated by 2 ways :
1- relock bootloader with drm keys you backup before (official sony way)... But bootloader will be locked so no custom rom or custom kernels
2- use a flashable zip mod to use drm features (not working on aosp or cm based roms) only on sony based customed rom like existenz and.....
I hope this clarify any info you needed

Forgive me I’m total newbie, I mean this would be my first smart phone ever, I want to ditch my laptop +dumb phone combo in favor of a smartphone, so very steep learning curve. I only need 4 things, web browsing a lot and typing, radio, Microsoft office, writing notes or a full book with a pencil, and nothing else.
1) If the bootloader is not unlocked or locked back after I root it, will it work with xpose frame and it’s modules?
2) Is there a full list of drm features somewhere so I can decide if it’s worth it in discarding AOSP ROMs. Do I even need these features?
3) Is there a list of Sony’s based ROMs only, so I can compare them to AOSP based ROMs? Or maybe you can name some that run without any issues
4) Will I loose the glove mode if I went with A) Sony’s based custom ROM, B) AOSP based ROM?
Cheers

1- exposed framework will work either locked or unlocked bootloader because it needs only root
2- xreality and super vivid image effects, ps4 remote play, bionz image processor but those can be reactivated on unlocked bootloader on stock or custom sony rom using this mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/xperia-z1-z2-z3-series-devices-drm-t2930672
3- the best features rich and smooth butter stable rom is EXISTENZ rom that also be used with locked bootloafer http://forum.xda-developers.com/xpe...m-existenz-ultimate-1-0-5-light-dark-t2835196
4- certainly you will lose glove mod on aosp or cm roms and only available if you use sony stock or custom sony rom
sent from either my xperia Z2 or teclast x98 air 3g using TAPALK!!!
If the EXISTENZ rom does not need unlocking bootloader does that mean it’s basically the stock sony (original manufacturers) rom with added features and all the bloatware is still there?
Then there are kernels, after reading I’m still confused is that part of the ROM or are these installed separately need bootloader unlocked or not, and if so are there any specific to Z2 that are worth looking at, again keeping the same theme that I need the glove mode feature always working no matter what modifications I will try.
Basically I have full list of things I would want my phone to do in transitioning from a laptop, most people told me these are against android fundamentals plus need additional API programming in each app, but could be achieved more or less with custom Rom, a customizable launcher like Lightning Launcher Extreme + Xpose+ tasker, which means there might be to many conflicts if all these are implemented in one device.
Cheers
P.S. Can I PM you with my full list?

EXIZTENZ rom is a modified original sony based rom which is added features and optimized and bloatware free .works on locked bootloader because it doesn't need to flash custom kernel as stock kernel is enough!!!
As you know unlocking bootloader is for installing custom kernel and aosp or cm roms but stock sony customed rom can run on original kernel!!!
PS : phone will NEVER replace pc or laptop !!! Because you need lAptop to recover or fix your phone if anything goes wrong and most importantly is there's things you can't do on phones

Now I’m confused about the installation process of the EXISTENZ rom, if it does not require unlocking boot loader does that mean I can root the phone via Sony’s way and still install the EXISTENZ rom, or do I still need to unlock bootloader then install the EXISTENZ rom then lock the boot loader back? Does that make sense?

Using a Pen/Pencil or Metal to touch and control the device works regardless of what app you are in. Its just like a extension of your finger.
This also works on custom ROMS like CM.

Yes rooting DOES NOT remove the DRM keys or unlock your bootloader.
Unlocking the bootloader will remove your DRM keys and its is something completely different from rooting. There no possible way to "accidentally" unlock your bootloader while rooting.
I suggest you read the forums, good place to start :

Hi there can anyone help Im not new to rooting and flashing stuff its just my new sony experience came from htc one m8 Im so confused with this dual recovery do I need to root first before flashing this dual recovery? because on most phone just install custom recovery then flash supersu.zip and done you are rooted, I want also some custom rom can anyone help me? im on 5.1.1 d6503
It depends if you care about your warrenty and certain Xperia Spesific features
1. Downgrade, use root tool then use prfCreator to make a pre-rooted flashable zip to upgrade back to 5.1.1
(for recovery use XZdualrecovery for sirius
2. Unlock bootloader and flash recovery and kernel or just kernel with recovery bundled with
Notes:
- Stock based roms dont need a custom kernel (custom kernels require unlocked bootloaders(
- Custom non-stock based roms need a unlocked bootloaders

It really depends on your use
Example: i benefit from a Unlocked bootloader because i can flash androplus kernel which allows me to tune my phone in such a way to where i can get an extra 2hrs of Screen time
And you lose camera post processing and those display enhancements that make pictures look nice in the album app when enabled as well as some PS3/4 related features
In my opinion the camera looks better without post processing and the X-reality isnt a permanent thing so whats the point of it really

Help about bootloader

What will I loose if I unlocked my bootloader? Is there way to root without unlocking it? Or its still not possible? Any alternatives so that I will not loose any important features in my Xperia z5c? I'd like to use my Xperia z5c in full customization. Thank you in advance for answering.
Almost nothing, practically all custom kernels come with a DRM fix. (Normally you would lose some extra Sony features in sound, camera)
The only thing is, you won't be able to restore it. There is no way of rooting without unlocking your bootloader.

Sony warns you that unlocking BL voids your warranty.
But I've send in my phone after unlock BL and got a new one without any issues.
I would recommend to flash stock rom before you send it in for warranty.
Better is hard to say, it depends on what you want to do. If you want root access you'll have no other choice.

I own a Xperia z5 compact and i switch now to another phone... (xz premium) now i want to sell the xz5c so is it possible to lock bootloader with default ftf ?? without losing DRM keys issues ? or i lock bootloader with an custom kernel... but what happens if the new phone user want to update it ??
i dont want to sell crap so if there is no good option for end user i will notice it with custom kernel .... but i will lose money ....
sorry for my english ^^
You can relock the bootloader using flashtool but you cannot restore DRM keys unless you have a TA backup

No that would brick your device.
But: If you relock without DeviceKey probably no one will ever notice that various DRM features dont work any longer. I unlocked all my phones (most of them without DRM backup) and never noticed any problems.

when i flash my device to .33 i notice that the finger scanner doesnt reconice anything when i flash the kernel too evrything was working fine... idk if it was a phenomen but i cant sell a not full working phone -.-* money -.-*
i think best sultion is flash new ftf the kernel and sell it in that condition -.-* how much i would get for it ? screen and back have no scratches.... just the frame just some marks ... what would be acceptable ?
Wipe the phone and fully reflash it. The fingerprint sensor should work without drm keys.
Dont know how much you can ask for.

Not possible. Locked bootloader = 100% stock Sony signed firmware only.
Lack of DRM keys arguably doesn't matter that much once it's out of warranty, but some DRM features are noticeable, like low light noise reduction for the camera.
You should make this information clear when you sell.
