Note 3 LTE vs Note 4 Spark speeds - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

I Recently purchased a used Note 4 and was curious how much faster Spark is compared the Note 3's 4G LTE and I was completely floored. The first picture was from the Note 3 and the 2nd from the Note 4 but I'm sure you would have guessed that ? Sprint, you will keep my business with these speeds!

Dang.....

Ouch I live in Akron and getting between 4 to 6 down.

What's your location? I'm assuming you actually have spark connectivity and those speeds aren't regular 4G?

I have a question. Are you able to be on a phone call and open web pages on the Note 4 while only using Spark?

No you cannot. The Note 4 only has 1 radio whereas there are 2 in the Note 3. That's why users that have the Note 3, such as myself, can be on a phone call and search the web at the same time on LTE. That is one of the reasons I have yet to upgrade. I actually use this feature a lot and Sprint did away with it in exchange for clearer voice calls and faster data speeds. I may get the Note 5 regardless if the specs I've read about come to fruition.

Actually all spark phones are completely capable of simultaneous voice and data as long as they're on the spark network. If only on regular 4G/3G then your statement is correct. I too made the uninformed mistake of upgrading to the S5 only to immediately switch to the best non-spark phone I could (note 3). Sprint says they had to remove the secondary radio that allowed simultaneous v/d due to the power requirements of the faster spark chips in order to conserve battery. Either way I don't have spark in my area yet so it was a no brainer to switch.

Like the other guy said, no you can't. I have read though that they are working on a solution for this (with Sprint? Hah good luck). This isn't a big deal for me I probably use like 10 mins/month.

I'd happily exchange d+v for pegging a speedtest.net speed run for data!

The Sprint rep doesn't know what he is talking about. If people keep sending requests to Sprint for information trying to grasp for straws, someone is bound to mess up and tell the wrong thing. If anything I believe the tweeter meant to say that it supports 800/1900 MHz for voice only.
Just accept that the Note 3 is single band LTE and that there will be no further hardware modifications to the phone to enable other LTE band support.
The Note 3 has been handling 1900 LTE like a champ in my opinion..I have 4G in my house and in my office.Never drops to 3G ever in either of those to locations. And out on the road I see 4G more than I ever have on my HTC One..I'm a happy camper and don't see a problem at 1900 until 800 becomes more widely available in Florida..
But the rep is probably confusing it with SMR

The 4g on my note 3 goes in and out. I can wake the phone and as soon as I do the 4glte icon disappears and the 3g icon pops up. No stable 4g connection at all. Haven't been able to test the speeds because of this. Now my gs4 is sitting right by my note 3 and it has full 4g getting speeds up to 24mbps. Yet the note 3 is still only showing 3g. Both on the same prl. Both has lte enabled.

Yea but like myself and most other it's just a risk that im not planning to take with the note 3 on a single band cuz one day you will never know when would that band get clutter up with other customers. See for me in Miami in the city im struggling to pull 5mbps down on my note 2 at work and 2mbps down at my house which to me its useless.
I woul wait for the LG G2 but no sd card slot and non removable battery and 5.2 inch screen is a big deal breaker im already used to the nice big screens can't just downgrade that easily so what I'm planning to do is get the note 3 on Tmobile for 14days try it out in all the area's that im at the most because so far I seen nothing but good results with lte and hspa speeds in the Miami area from couple of friends plus I'm always switching phones every couple of months so jump would be great for me.

I live in the DC Baltimore area. (Columbia Maryland). On Sprints coverage map my area is considered the Baltimore region.
In regards to the Note 3 not having tri band capabilities would you still purchase this phone if you lived in my area?

The Note 3 is single band, according to them.
Please let this issue go away. It's already been confirmed that it's single band. Check the fcc documents

It is single band because right naw, the 800mhz band is not LTE, hence single band of 1900. Once LTE is deployed on 800mhz we should be picking it up off that frequency, too, right? That is my understanding. If you say that is not how it works could you please source some info as to why it will not work.

Sprint has stated that the device does in fact support 800 MHz LTE, the only reason it's not listed on the FCC document is because it's not currently activated.

If that was the case and if the phone was to be dual band why go with 800mhz when band41 has been deployed onto some towers and markets doesn't make sense as to I would rather go that route for dual band but either way let me say this to you until sprint shows you proof other then words their full of **** lol.

No Sprint 4G device is able to do this unfortunately.
If u r on 2g or edge, data gets disconnected while on call. It doesn't happen if u r on 3g or 4g.

If you have any of the Sprint spark enabled phones you lose data connection ( 2g, 3g, 4g) while on a call, unless you're connected to wifi.
I noticed this too. Back on the S3 you could do both but now you can't.

The S3, EVO LTE, and S4(pre spark) could do it fine because they had 2 radios. They were sold around the time AT&T and T-Mobile were marketing the ability to do Talk and Data at the same time.
Since that time has passed, the new Spark Phones will not be able to do Talk and Data until VoLTE is enabled.. Yay!
It is a step back so I will be keeping my EVO LTE around incase I need the ability more often then not. :/

I don't think this is a Sprint specific thing. My work iPhone 5 (On Verizon) does the same thing.. as others have said there is only 1 radio.. probably cost savings/power savings is why they are doing it.
It is a CDMA thing. The Radio cannot do Data and Voice at the same time on the same radio. GSM is completely different technology so it doesn't have this limitation.
On the Sprint/Verizon phones that could do this, they either had separate 3G/4G modems, or Duel 3G and a 4G modem. It didn't help Battery life when more than one is in use, but it did get around the problem of data while on voice quite well.
No Spark Sprint Devices have this however. They all have only 1 radio at the moment so until VoLTE is turned on, No Voice and Data.
All you've gotta do is switch to T-Mobile. I've got talk text and internet all the same time.

That feature only works on AT&T network.
It's not actually a CDMA thing only. It's has to deal with the chipset. Even T-Mobile and AT&T you'll lose LTE while on call as manufacturers have consolidated the radios.
Yeah i lose data when I make a call on sprint. But with my t-mobile, it just drops to 3g (hspa) which is faster than sprints 4g anyways...

Another reason to keep your Note 3

I recently purchased a Galaxy note Edge for my daughter and rooted it to enable the Hotspot. Found out the Note Edge with Sprint Spark is single Antenna device. So, if the Hotspot is enabled and your using it to run a laptop. Then at the same time you receive a phone call it drops the Hotspot internet connection.
In other words you cannot receive calls and data at the same time. The Note 4, Note 5, Note Edge, S6, and S6 Edge all have a single antenna. The Note 3 is the last Samsung device to send and receive data and phone calls at the same time. Just another reason I still run a Note 3 . :good:

Please correct me if I am mistaken. However, my wife has a Note Edge which i rooted for her and I have the Note 3 (which I love) and she can get data while on a call. Simple test we did was for her to call me and then simply leave me talking while she surfs the web. She was able to do it multiple times as well as receive email too. She can do data while on a call. Does this mean that she has a dual antenna? Is there another test which I should perform further prove data and voice working simultaneously? Thanks again,

No I'm afraid not. The antenna is hardware not software they are all built with one antenna. Was the device on 3g or 4g lte or WiFi ? With sprint spark I know you can surf the net while on a phone call with a 4g lte signal. I don't know if this is true if the device is on a 3g signal, will try it on my daughters note edge once I can get the phone back ( young girls and cell phones need I say more ). What the device will not do is with the hotspot activated ( meaning the phone is being used as a wireless router running internet to a laptop ). If a call is received the hotspot internet connection is dropped.
With my note 3 I have been on the phone talking, surfing the net, and had some one using the hotspot for a laptop all at the same time a truly remarkable device.
Thanks for getting back to me. I have been able to go on with both LTE and 3G while on call and surfing. I see what you mean now about the hotspot as a router. I remember the days of doing that with my HTC EVO 4G LTE (sorry I regress). I will try the hotspot later today. Thanks again and i agree a great and versatile phone we own in the Note 3. It will be very hard for me to give up this phone for another. My son uses my old Note 2 and he loves it.

I get it home and at work. Here in CT we received a pretty decent wimax rollout and so far Sprint has transitioned to TDD LTE pretty quickly too. I live in Hartford and pull a good 50-70 mbps but omw to work in Manchester is where it really flies pulling almost 100 mbps. Also VOLTE will be coming someday so calls and data will be possible. On top of that they're also going to turn on 3x Carrier Aggregation and also bring CA to their other LTE bands. Older phones can't take advantage of those perks. I would only rock to a Note 3 or older phone if Spark is still absent in my market which isn't.

Sprints speeds should be improving as they are beginning to have fewer customers therefore less congestion on the network. This is a great happening for people who stay with them.

You need to make sure you are on a tower with Band 41

Do you need to enable band 41?

No. Everything worked fine right out the box. I have not found any method to set a priority yet though...that would be nice.

*#*#DATA#*#* in the Dialer. You can view band priority here. I don't have my MSL so I can't change them. Do these phones even have MSLs? I'm new to Sprint (just switched from AT&T) so some of these things are confusing to me.

I have read 2 thoughts on that...one is MSL is 000000 because it is unlocked, and another that said Sprint assigns an MSL when activating. I will have to give it a try and see.

I was able to get my MSLs from Sprint via chat. They were not all zeros. Additionally, setting the band priority does not affect which band you sit on. It's just for the initial connection. After that it's a signal and load balancing act. Realistically you should always find yourself on the "best" band.

Thanks, I'll have to chat them up for it. Now we just need to figure out how to write PRLs.
anyone in Orlando area with Sprint that gets good speeds? Orlando supposedly one of market to get the LTE Plus rollout but ummmm I've yet to see the difference. I usually only get like 1.5 Mbps / 1 Mbps (dl / ul).
Connected to band 41 here at my place. Not bad. Totally acceptable for me.

Post Nexus 6P Speed Tests

Anybody else notice the ridiculous speeds on this phone? I'm coming from an LG G4 on AT&T. The LTE speeds on that were never even half as fast as this is on AT&T.
T-Mobile speed's are slightly better than my Nexus6 with this badboy 6P!

I got about 70 mbps with ATT in an area that I only got 30 to 40mbps with my Note 3.
Im on tmobile and I'm actually having the reverse. I upgraded from a Note 3 and when I run speed tests in the same places that I did with my note 3, the 6p is on average 50% slower. Can't be because of the lack of band 12 because the note 3 didn't have that band. Hmmm
It seems Sprint just updated the network today. I'm in San Antonio TX, I've always compromised service for price but if this stays consistent then I'll finally have both.

My experience with the G3 was the radios were weak and slow on AT&T. Maybe the same goes with the G4

I was in North Eastern Ohio for the Summer a few years ago, and T-Mobile seemed a lot slower than out in the Western States.

You got that right. Speeds suck for me too. I was with At&t and now with Verizon and they both have crappy speeds. NEO here.

Wow, first time that I see these speeds. Nice, I will try with my 4G connection.
I got 102.79Mb/s download, 37Mb/s upload from Bell Mobility in Toronto, ON, Canada..

[side note: On Bell Mobility website, they list the Nexus 6p as "LTE" instead of "LTE Advanced". Yes, they list the Samsung S6 and Note 5 as LTE Advanced]
