Secondary microphone doesn't work? - Galaxy S6 Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I purchased a S6 edge one week ago. Everything was fine until today when I noticed something strange about the secondary microphone.
As you know, on the top side of the galaxy edge, there is a secondary microphone near the IR emitter. It seems that mine is not working properly. I don't know if it works as the same way as the main bottom side main microphone, but when I tried recording sound with the secondary microphone, I cannot hear a ****.(I blocked the main micro when registering). So basically, when the main microphone is out of service, the secondary doesn't work good...That is really annoying for a 860 euros phone.
Is it normal or not? I purchased this phone from a local carrier shop and they don't want to exchange this for a new unit and can only send it for reparation. I contact Samsung via phone and they told me the warraty cover only reparation, doesn't exchange. Do you think that I should go to visit a Samsung experience shop so that they can do something for me?
Thank you in advance.

It's not normal at all, secondary mic works perfectly on my S6 Edge, blocking the main mic on the bottom I can record the voice using the mic at the top of the phone.

Pretty sure that mic is used for reducing background noise. It's not used for normal recording or other conventional uses.

Really, I read this somewhere too, that was why I am not sure if it really doesn't work properly or it doesn't work as the main microphone. Can someone else give us an answer please?
Thank you very much

Any ideas please? Thank you in advance.

[q] mic problem

Hey i'm new to here....but i will get straight to the problem..
i been having problems with my mic, the one in the top. I thought it was a software issue but it was not because i tried flashing lots of stock roms but still didn't work...my other mike is working fine...but when i turn the speaker on the phone uses the mic in the top, and when video catting also the phone uses the top mic, so i cant do anything so my question is that is there any way to set my second mic to be used for everything...like for video chatting on skype and tango, instead of using the mic on top, can the mic in the bottom be used?? is it possible to set the lower mic to be used for everything?? hope someone will help me thank you!
please somebody help me please
I don't know the answer to your question, but dude, you gotta wait longer than a couple hours before whining.
This is a development forum, not a tech support forum. No one is paid to sit around watching for support request posts. People answer posts of their own free will, on their own time.
EDIT: actually, I'm curious now. You say you're having issue with your top mic. Do you have a case on the phone? If so, does the case have an opening for the top mic? If so, are you sure the mic opening is clear of debris?
i'm sorry.... no its doesn't have any case or anything...and its clear...i even tried to put a small pin into it to see if there is anything stuck inside it, but their was nothing

Exactly what is the problem you are having with the upper mic anyways? You never say.
I don't know of any mods that will re-route all mic functions of the upper mic to the lower one... So if the upper mic is simply not functioning, it sounds like it could be hardware fault.
Your only option may be to send it for repair. Since you say you tried flashing a bunch of ROMs, you'll have to flash back to stock and reset your flash counter if you want any hope of warranty coverage. Otherwise you'll be paying for the repair job.

May or may not work, and will only work until a reboot, at which point he'd have to do it again.
If he has warranty, he should send it in. Otherwise, he could crack the case open and inspect the top mic to see if the rubber housing is seated properly. It might be partially blocking the mic.
thanks for trying to help guyss....i did try that before but it didnt help at all

So send it in for repair (hopefully warranty covered), or try to do phone surgery yourself. Those are really your only options.
I have exactly the same issue. Top mic is not working and even replacement of the board with mic, vibro-motor and mini-jack did't helped. I've realised that the problem is with a condensator or a chip on the main board. I also would like to find the modification wich can change top mic to the lower one. Please, if anyone knows how to do it, let me know.

[CM9 RC2] Mic not working whilst on speakerphone

Hi XDAers,
I believe since rooting (it might have occurred some time after) my Samsung Galaxy SII GT9100, I am not able to use my speakerphone as the other party to the call can't hear me. This problem is the same whether I use the regular phone, Skype, Viber or any other communication program. I have no problems with the mic when the phone is not on speakerphone, and I can use any recording application successfully.
I originally rooted my phone, flashed LighteningROM, went back to my service providers ROM (though rooted), and just today switched to CM9. I'm not sure exactly when the problem started occurring, but it was AFTER flashing to LighteningROM and before flashing to CM9. Is there any way to debug the error? Could it be due to flashing a bad radio or the like?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Speakerphone uses the top mic, not the bottom. Is the top mic clear and uncovered that you can see? If so, it may either be a hardware issue with the upper mic, or the rubber housing on the upper mic in the internals of the phone may not be seated properly, and is blocking sound to it.

The top mic seems to be uncovered. I believe I once read that Sound Recorder and applications alike use the top mic as well? If this is the case, why is the mic working in these applications?

Wasn't my intention to "get you" - hope you didn't take it the wrong way! I've just flashed back to stock ROM, but the problem persists. It appears people CAN hear me, however I am so low, they say it's worse than if I whisper with speakerphone off. Looks like it has to go back?

When I said "you got me", it's another way of saying "I don't know". I took no offense.
And yup, if you don't wanna mess with opening up the phone yourself, and you still have warranty, I'd flash back to stock, reset the flash counter, and send it in.

Did you ever get this working with your S2? I'm having the exact same problem. I flashed the stock 4.1.2 Jellybean via Odin and my stats are as follows:
Kernel: 3.0.31-Siyah-s2-v6.0b5+
ROM: I9100XWLSW
ROM Codename: REL
Radio Version: I9100XXMS2
Should I try flashing a different stock ROM? Does each one bring a different radio that may make a difference? Thanks.

unresolved microphone issue after USB flex replacement

Hello,
I have a major problem with my lower microphone (on the USB flex board), the microphone does not register much sound at all (very faint sounds are possible if you scream as loud as possible into the microphone directly).
I have replaced the USB flex board (properly, everything is connected correctly and the USB port works perfectly), but the microphone is exactly the same...
Anyone have any ideas? It seems a couple of people have similar issues, has anyone found a fix yet?
Also, does anyone perhaps have any ideas about how to force the top microphone (speaker phone mic) to engage as the active microphone during regular voice calls? I am 100% sick of using speaker phone for every voice call, especially considering I need to make private/confidential calls for work :\
and yes, I have removed the rubber housing as well and tested it without it, it makes zero difference.
Youve tried to repair it on rhe cheap and failed.Maybe take it to a repair shop and get it done properly.
And from your other thread, the spare one I have here has part no gt-i9100 rev2.2(so maybe the one you bought is still faulty )
Sent from my GT-I9100
So you've followed me to my thread because I made a post you didn't like in another thread, and offered complete shinfo.
Please, do not post again.
I am a fourth year EE student, I know how to replace a minor circuit board correctly.
Anyone who has any real advice, specifically about whether or not this may be some form of software issue, and with regards to my question about using the other microphone in voice calls, please let me know.
My mistake-I thought I was replying to a poster named Bodurr as he made a couple of threads about mic problems aswell.
He replaced the board and its still not working.
And I see what you mean about the other thread-I can assure you I never twigged it was you.
Anyway,if you require help, its advised to state what rom etc your running. That way someone could say "if your rooted make a nandroid backup then flash stock rom and see if problem persist".
Sent from my GT-I9100
I'm using rootbox ICS rom version 1.7, android 4.0.4 with siyah kernel v3.4.
Have made a nandroid backup and reflashed to stock a couple of times (including stock kernel and then CF root kernel) and nothing makes any difference.
The issue started whilst on gingerbread and has now carried on to ICS...
I'm seriously completely stumped and have no idea what is causing it :\
I've had a quick look and its advised to test using voice recorder to eliminate a hardware issue.
Other thing mentioned was to change audio values(but maybe need to be on GB to access and change values in the *#197328640# menu.
I don't know if you've done this already.

Just tested again with voice recorder (first time I have done this since swapping the USB flex board) and it's exactly the same issue.
There is SOME sound, but you need to have the volume on full with your ear right against the speaker to hear it, and it's still very faint like that.
What a bizarre issue, it seems no-one knows how to fix it either :\

experiencing exactly the same issue, replaced the USB flex and now have no microphone pickup on voice calls / voice recorder apps.
using ICS so not got the service mode audio options available (says BLOCKED)
don't know where I've gone wrong? maybe the part wasn't exactly right? I got it from here > http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=251069751004
Heres someone that lists a seller and he says he has no problems.

Up here, anyone found solution for this issue? I'm experimenting now the same problem with microphone after replacing the USB flex board...
Thanks
Yeah, got the solution. It's actually the board/flex cable itself. Took me three boards to find that out. There is a lot of b-ware boards on eBay that were actually thrown out by Samsung because they did not pass QC. Just get a genuine spare part and your mic will be fine.

damn, i got the same then... its gonna be hard to get a proper board... I was thinking maybe, it had some kind of security by solder like lasers...
There's a little difference between 2.2 and 2.3, a single resistor, could it be?
Also, can't connect USB in Mass storage...

Hmm some people are saying 2.3 won't be compatible. Was your phone originally 2.2 or 2.3? Also how do I tell if it is genuine? If it says oem?
Why wouldn't it be compatible. A higher revision number usually suggests that something has been improved. BTW I initially had a 2.2 sub circuit board, now it's 2.3.
Well the new board should look like the old one. I think I took a picture the day I switched my board out. I'll try too find it later.

Xperia Z3 Compact Tablet A Phone?

Hey guys, I was wondering if the new Xperia Z3 Compact Tablet will take calls just like a normal Xperia smartphone.
I ask this because I am considering purchasing a Z Ultra but I prefer an even bigger screen if possible, would the Z3 Compact Tablet also take calls, where I can keep it to my face and talk?
I heard it will require a Bluetooth headset in order for you to use it as a phone.
I am confused as to which one to get, any help would be appreciated!

Interesting, thanks for that....But it seems that on the pdf document attached it does not say anything about a microphone, and if this document is from Sony Officially, then It looks like the phone will only work via Bluetooth.
I also lean towards this as Sony would have made this known as a phablet, or at least really stressed in the presentation on Spt 3 at IFA that this can work as a full out phone, because its not a small thing that just gets left out.
I also would assume it cant be used as a "full phone" because I don't think they would just ditch the Z Ultra line completely just like that.

It has video recording in camera. Do most tablets record video without audio? I read somewhere that "phablet" is considered to be 5.5 to 7 inch maybe that is why it is called compact tablet. Looked at pdf a little closer and see video chat listed for front camera and speakerphone listed for communication. Also voice I put is listed, seems like they would put an asterisk next to them if bluetooth were required.
Wow just noticed quoting each other is all whacked out, looks like it started with your second post.
The white paper for z3 phone is nearly identical to tablet except for rear camera features (microphone is not mentioned) all the other functions and features appear to be same.

By using the term earpiece I only meant to describe call audio routing to top speaker the same as on Z Ultra.
I think they are referring to the bands available from your carrier may not be compatible, not that the device will be unavailable.
I too am interested in this, especially as there's a special offer on the Z3 tablet at the moment in the UK
http://www.xperiablog.net/2014/10/1...-tablet-compact-for-under-300-including-case/
according to a comment on the Clove blog
http://blog.clove.co.uk/2014/10/10/...ompact-arriving-week-commencing-20th-october/
it can be used as a phone, but I would wait until they have their hands on one.
SXZ3TC can be used as a phone, but since he hasn't conversational speaker, just normal speaker, everyone others will hear your interlocutor. Also it hasn't proximity sensor, so won't lock screen. So more advisable use handsfree, especially that one with awesome noise reduction.
So, do you guys plan on using the Z3 Tablet Compact as a phone? I'm not sure what to do really, since my first plan was to use it instead of my Note 2 and iPad. But when I learned that you're unable to place calls like "normal" and have to rely on a separate bluetooth headset, I'm not so sure anymore. What if you forget the headset at home, for example?
I have a hard time believing this thing doesn't have a mic for talking on the phone otherwise how do you Skype, gchat or whatever? I have heard there is no proximity sensor which i can live with because I don't want to put this beast next to my face anyways therefore I don't care about the earpiece part for phone calls. Come on guys, do you guys really want to put this thing up to your face in public? You'll never get laid! HAHAHA. Hopefully the 3.5 jack will do the trick.

From reports in the Z3TC forums from European members that have them, it works the same as using phone in speaker mode. Not idea for having private conversations.

You guys will be really popular on public transportation I would so joke around if i knew someone using the Z3TC as their phone. I would call them up at work or in public and ask them for something awkward, like "i need my buttplug back soon" or something.

"And should you so choose, you could make normal phone calls and send text messages with this. Unless you are particularly socially comfortable a Bluetooth headset might be the best bet."
doesn't say if it has an ear-piece rather than speakerphone feature.
of course, Sony want you to buy a BRH10 and use that as the handset instead

My Microphone is broken

Hello,
my Microphone ist Broken. Can anyone tell me how can i repair this? How can i open the Case from Le MAx 2?
thx
Check on YouTube the procedure to open Le 1s. It looks like the same system of assembly, screen glued to the frame. First heat up the side of the screen and with a suction cup, pull up the lcd assembly.
My advice is to either handle with care not to mess up the lcd or send it to some repair shop to do it for you. They should have experience with this as the method for Sony/Samsung phones should be the same.
Another point is to have special glue tape (perfect fit for Le Max 2) to refit the screen, either it will unglue itself when heated by sunrays.
Are you sure that the microphone is broken? Have you checked the hardware test mode?
Try to reflash the rom and wipe data/cache/dalvik before any attempt to open the phone. Start with the easy things first.

The front mic is down next to the USB c port right and the back mic is next to the back camera (in the antenna line). Try another rom and see if that helps.
