Can't get Lollipop any way..was rooted at one point. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Okay here's my tale of woe..
I rooted my phone last year - but at some point - took an update and lost root.
Though the phone still displays the "custom" boot screen with the padlock.
I tried to take the Lollipop update through the OTA but it fails and I get the "laying on his back" failed Android dude...
The phone DID take the first update.
I have: wiped cache in recovery, wiped data and cache in download manager.
No luck.
I have tried loading the NC5 kernel back on (via Odin 3.09) - but that makes the phone 100% unstable...reboots every 3 minutes..no access to apps - they lock and reboot etc etc.
Loaded the NG6 kernel back on to re-stabilize the phone and tried to Kies the update.
Kies downloads the update then when it tries to apply it the phone boots into "download mode"
I have been advised to:
I had the same custom boot screen--even after unrooting. Tried using Triangle Away to reset the binary count, but the count was already at 0. So ultimately I had to re-flash the NC5 kernel via Odin to get things truly back to being recognized as stock.
Then updates started rolling in for NG6, then NK1. Finally the two-part update for Lollipop.

and - of course that doesn't work. NC5 won't let the phone run long enough to take an update..
It has been said:
Try to flash the OC1 with the pit file

But I haven't found the stock OC1 file anywhere to even try and begin to get it loaded.
Honestly - I'm not even really concerned about rooting right now. I'd really just like to get the phone back to a stock configuration and kernel and lollipop.
Developer mode is enabled. Obviously both Kies and Odin talk to the phone with no problems.
Any ideas ?
Thanks, Dan

Get your phone to 4.4.2, use the verizon software upgrade assistant program preloaded on your phone to update. I had this exact same problem and that's how I got to 5.0.1
You WILL lose root. And there's no method to root 5.0 right now, and people have been saying that there might never be. You also won't be able to downgrade, or at least there's no method to do so at the moment, so you will be stuck with lollipop for a while, maybe forever.

Yes.
Maybe I need to clarify.
I do not care about root at this point. I just want to get the phone back to a stock state and take the Lollipop update.
I'm curious as to why I will never be able to update beyond Lollipop.
Doesn't matter I guess - the phone will have been replaced by then - but still...why ?
Thanks, Dan

I've downloaded (3) different 4.4.2 Firmwares.
FNK1
FNC5 (No Wipe)
FNG6 (No Wipe)
Any opinion on which one is best ?

Did you download these manually or OTA? When I re-flashed the NC5 kernel, I received NG6 then NK1 then the 2-part Lollipop updates all OTA back-to-back.

I would use the ng6. That's what I was running.

Hmm... I'm not sure if it makes a difference to download OTA instead of manually. I would think it's worth a shot flashing NC5 (if it will let you downgrade) and using the software update feature to update OTA the rest of the way.

Got it finally !
started out by flashing (FNG6 (No Wipe)) in Odin 3.09
That got me to regular boots with no "custom" screen showing the lock symbol.
Then I had to take OTA updates to FNK1 then the OTA preliminary Lollipop update then (OTA) finally Lollipop itself.
No root - but that's OK.
It took about an hour and a couple shutdowns to get things running smoothly but it's all good now.
Thanks everyone for their help.

I'm trying to install the latest update but it keeps failing. It says "downloading" for hours and hours but nothing ever happens. I'm on ME7 (or whatever it is) so the phone is rooted but no recovery is installed. I'm hoping to figure it out before the 4.3 update. I searched but did not see this problem posted. Any ideas?

If you want the update just flash it with Odin. Or use voodoo root keeper to try and keep root. To get the OTA to take the phone must be in stock form. Which means no system apps have been frozen or deleted.

Thank you for the quick reply. I have not done much with the phone yet so I have not seen ODIN. Hopefully 4.3 is released soon like the rumors suggest.

[Q] Phone is "Broken" Please Help!

Alright, I don't really know what happened or what I did, but something bad happened. To begin with, I rooted my phone with Stump and that went fine. After a month or so my phone started to lock itself out and sometimes not unlock. This bug, I don't know what it was, was probably from one of the roms. I uninstalled and removed all the roms and "unrooted" my phone. When I try to root my phone again, it sees the phone as unsupported. I did a hard reset/ I even used towelroot and that was bad. My phone also can't be used on my computer because it won't read it as an LG device with a driver. I've hard reset several times and tried many things. What I know for sure is that one rom or something didn't get removed. For example, I had an emoji switcher rom and I still have Google's emoji's instead of the default LG after reset. I can also lock my phone by double tapping the top left corner, which was another rom. This is all when "unrooted"
Can someone help me fix this? I don't have a warranty on the phone and SuperSU doesn't let me do anything on it.

after removing root, you need to flash back to stock to get it working again with the exploit.

You have to flash back to stock via the link below. Once you Unroot it is the only way of getting root back. Plus it is always nice to know how to return to stock before someone starts rooting, flashing roms etc... so when you get into this positions you already know the solution.
Edit: Make sure you do not take the System update after you flash back to 10b otherwise you will not be able to root any way.

Did you get back to stock via the method I supplied? It has to be done that way and then check in your "about phone" and verify you are on "10b". From here the phone should take the 11c update.

Did you disable anything ?
If you returned to stock v10b via the .kdz file, you will not get the OTA because your are on an earlier version of v10b than the phone released with.
You are in a perfect situation to flash bumped TWRP recovery and then the v11c modem, system, and boot images, effectively updating you just like the OTA would have.
If you require the OTA to self-apply, then you need to restore using the .TOT method.

How can I flash a newer version such as 11c(Or upcoming Android L)? Without .tot
You can't. You kdz back to keep from getting the update so you can root and bump and flash roms. You tot to get to the right version to take the update
Once L is released OTA, our noble developers will make it possible for us who have root and recovery to flash the OTA components safely, retaining root and custom recovery.
We hope.
Why would you want to take the current locked OTA?
If you TOT you can still root. Before you take the update.

Officially Released!! OTA Lollipop I545VRUGOC1

Now Available!! 5.0.1!!!
Go get your lollipop ON!!!
Hopefully this will result in some bugs squashed with CM12. I am hoping for a better modem and better Bluetooth.
Queuing up downloads now, I have two of them pending for my device
are you able to capture the updates
I was able to capture the first update because im rooted. But i dont want to lose it if i update it. I hope the developers can find a way to keep root for the first update. if they can. I will happily capture the second update to get lollipop.

apparently this is a 2-part update
part 1 is a build where the last three characters are NK4. this is a kitkat ROM that was likely used to prepare for lollipop
part 2 is the actual lollipop build, OC1. i think it's 5.0.1 but i'm seeing conflicting things from the internet
for some reason verizon likes doing major updates this way (i dont think they did it for jelly bean to kitkat though). but i've had a few of their phones, they've been doing two-part updates since the original galaxy s in 2010 lol
Hey everyone! Has anyone solved the mystery of the lollipop update fail? Seems alot of us are getting the first update without any issues, but the lollipop update is failing. It gives error 402, which one person at Vz told me was an error thrown due to having root. ( I don't have root ) Any suggestions appreciated!

I do still get the "custom" boot screen with the padlock though...
Can someone that has taken the OC1 ota update test to see if the 4.4.2 kernel has been blacklisted by:
1. Flash the I545_NK4_Stock_Kernel.tar.md5 using Odin. The device will not boot after flashing but we are just interested to see if the kernel will successfully flash.
2. To go back to normal flash the I545_OC1_Stock_Kernel.tar.md5 also in Odin.
This is the first test to determine if a downgrade workaround will be available for those that took the OC1 ota update.

Successful update (in two part harmony) yesterday. Stock system. Fox-Fi still works over Wi-Fi so I'm happy. No issues except 2nd update took a loooonngg time on the red Verizon screen. Make sure your battery is full or you are plugged in. No comments on battery life as I've been able to stay charged today. Getting used to it.

[Q] Help for those that took the OC1 OTA

I am making this thread because I took the OC1 update while rooted and I am asking more experienced members what I should do next.
I mistakenly took the OTA because I had read somewhere that some users upgraded from 4.3 to 4.4 with root from the OTA. I was wrong.
The OC1 OTA removed my root and prevented me from upgrading to LP. I have flashed other kernels and tried everything. I have read every thread in this forum on the topic and I see it mentioned that if I did take the OTA that I no longer had root, but I have found nothing else.
It is my understanding that after taking the OTA that I'll never have root again. Is there at least some way to get my phone completely back to stock and on LP?
Yeah I know it was a rookie mistake and I shouldn't have been so rash but I am here now and I don't know what to do, even after sifting through all the threads about Verizon's LP OTA.
Thank you for all of your help in advance.

This causes a boot loop.
However, I was actually able to towelroot on NC5 before the phone restarted, so I am now rooted again! When I encountered this boot loop the first time, I just went back to NK1 instead of trying to towelroot in-between reboots.
I probably could have also cleared cache before reverting back to NC5. Thanks for the help!
If the LP update failed then you were not on OC1. There were two updates. The first was still KitKat NK4. The second was OC1. Those that were rooted were able to take NK4 but the OC1 tended to fail. So there is probably still hope.

I had a similar issue , but I flashed the stock 5.0 ROM using Odin on my computer, but now when I try to flash back to NK1 it softbricks it.
I was able to to flash it back to the stock 5.0 ROM using Odin. I guess there's no downgrading after I did what I did....
Yep, Stuck on the new Lollipop. No root insofar as I know of.
sucks
My replacement s4 came with 5.0.1 on it. Very disappointed with it!!! It's driving me crazy. I can't even see a notification in the top bar smh. All it says is Verizon wireless. I miss root and roms so bad (

Well, nk4 doesn't have root. NK4 is the first step to lollipop. The qfuse isn't blown yet, so you can full wipe back to nc5, get root and safestrap. You can't disablet he update thing without root, so you have two options:
A)Odin back to nc5, then disable the OTA
B)Live with the notification
-I believe if you hold on the thing, click on settings, and disable the notification, that will stop any popup. I haven't done this in a while though.

No, it won't tell you if the qfuse is blown. That just means it detects root access on boot, and the system status is unnoficial

I guess what I'm asking is why do I need to root?
Secondly, does odin no longer work if I upgrade to lollipop down the road?
What firmware should I put on this phone?
You will have to use Odin to go back to nc5, with a FULL WIPE
Then, you have several options:
1)Use the stock deodex lollipop with Root
2)Echoe ROM v49(no dev though, so no more updates)
3)Super6(s6 port)

I saw something about that, I was reading the Odin guide where they said after odin shows the green "passed", then you need to reboot the phone holding the power home and volume up keys and pick the "factory reset / full wipe" option. if you don't do that does that brick the phone?
appreciate the help, it's my first time but I'm picking this up quick
No. The Full Wipe will wipe it for you and it will automatically reboot the phone. It will be in an "out of box" state.

I'm sorry I just feel like I'm missing some key concept here.
So just to clear up my understanding here are the following firmwares avaiable for my galaxy s4 i-545
i545vrugOC1 5.0.1
i545vrufnk1 4.4.2
i545vrufng6 4.4.2
i545vrufnc5 4.4.2
i545vruemk2 4.3
i545vrudmi1 4.2
My phone says it's running VRUFNK4. I'm guessing that's the temporary OTA (1/2) upgrade.
Am I right?
Is that why you want me to flash NC5 and is that why if I do a factory reset using the home and volume keys it won't do anything but just keep me where I am now? Why not an NG6 or an MK2 for that matter?
I'm sure a lot of people have these questions I just can't find it anywhere. I just don't want to brick my phone (is that permanent?)
nk4 is part one of two yes.
Even if you do a factory reset, it still won't update because you once rooted, and knox takes note of this, and will block any OTA. nc5 is the last firmware that had towelroot working. ng6 doesn't work with towelroot. I don't see why you would go any further back since the ROMs are based off of nc5.

Ok that makes sense, I thought for a minute the phone wasn't capable of going back to an earlier version because it had a different boot loader? is that not the case?
That is only the case once you go to 0C1. It is not the bootloader. It is because a physical qfuse is blown, and it has two values, 0(unblown) and 1(blown). If it reads as one, no going back to an older version.
