BTU or XEU? - Galaxy S6 Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I got my Edge today and way more impressed than I expected.
Am considering loading UK EE firmware for wifi calling feature and whilst on the Web I saw BTU and XEU for UK unbranded.
What's the difference?

Hey hey, I got mine 2 weeks ago and been researching around. If your device is BTU its come from samsung without the EE firmware, which means you can not use the WIFI calling or EE Wallet (like me).
its not worth flashing imo.. (shouldn't lose your warranty according to some guy on the internet… can't find source) as I have heard the quality of call is terrible and probably better sticking with WhatsApp calling feature which i have tried and tested in the TFL tube using virgin wifi hotspot on the platform.
EE firmware is EVR so you need that for the EE features. stupid but like thats how EE treats its customers…
so… all in all, EE wifi calling isn't worth it (reviews) and EE wallet will be superseded by Samsung Pay in a few months.
look at this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...rrier-free-t3099991/post60527015#post60527015
EDIT: you can use CashOnTap but you can't use WIFI calling. rumours that EE will release the wifi calling on all devices

OK I'll skip EE but what's the difference between BTU and XEU?

XEU used to be the old Samsung csc for the UK, then they switched to BTU later on. I hadn't seen XEU about for a while before I got my Edge and found it had the XEU csc code, not sure why they are using it again and why there is two now?

I think i worked out the difference between BTU and XEU.
BTU firmware are on phones that come directly from Samsung (unbranded)
XEU firmware are on Sim Free handsets that are generic (unbranded) but not from Samsung
S6 Edge uses both of the above which I have seen.

Ah nice, so it shouldn't matter which one.
At the moment on sammobile.com only the XEU version has the latest build. I was running BTU so hopefully there shouldn't be any difference in switching between the two.

Yes I have the XEU 5.1.1 but no raw support showing in 3rd party apps like sammobile say.

xeu definitely have raw support..if you use snap camera.. enable camera 2 api

Snap Camera is the only one I have got it to work in so far. Manual Camera is greyed out as an option. FV5 says its enabled but doesn't save any RAW.

It all depends on which one receives updates first / more frequently... some time has passed since your post, so which one tends to get more/earlier releases?

Uhmmm I don't know as I haven't checked.
I was going to update my phone but there doesn't seem to be an easy root method to replace pingpong root, which I used.
I can't use my phone without root, having a permissions manager is essential to me.

[Q] After Updating latest samsung update My phone is now 100% roaming ?

I have not moved or changed locations or anything but after updating the newest samsung firmware (on friday) my phone is now 100% of the time roaming. I've checked the network settings and it says Tmobile in there as it should (i'm on Tmobile in america with the i9300).
Is there something i did wrong? I updated it with Kies, what can i do to downgrade back to the old firmware if i get tired of this roaming business?

I am not sure, but its funny my friend has the BLUE i9300 bought 3 weeks after mine, and he was not getting a notification of the update via kies either, but it did give it to me and my phone the exact day it was out (uk firmware).
about changing the modem, will I need to root for that? i prefer to run stock for now..
that's bizarre but it probably has something to do with the phone being an internation model with a uk csc, but i've used my S1 from the uk several times in the u.s. with t-mobile and never had that problem .....can only assume it is a bug

Yea becuase when the phone arrived it worked great (even had a minor firmware upgrade the day i opened which was like june 15th ish or a few days later) and still worked great, no Roaming at all, then with last weeks update now it roams
It's worth pointing out that changing the modem will not work as a valid solution in this case. If one uses a non-LFB modem with the LFB ROM, the mic doesn't get used. One would have to also go to an older rom in addition to a different modem.
I'm having the same exact issue.
Need a solution.
Tried a factory reset. No dice.
Hi guys,
Didn`t find answer for my questions, so decided to link myself to similar topic.
Since the SW update I have done today my phone doesn`t lock to a network
When I go to settings to find a carrier manually, It takes about 2 minutes to find 4-5 networks available around, I am picking o2 UK (as I have a contract with them) and it says : Registering to o2 UK which takes about 4 minutes. After this it says : Emergency calls only and there is no status bars at all.
Master reset didn`t help.
What steps should I take ?
For you reference :
- Phone took from CPW in UK as sim free
- SIM Card used is from o2 UK (contract)
- I don`t want to flash anything, I would like to stay to stock ROM (if possible)
UPDATE : Chosen `Select Automaticly` allowed the phone to find signal, could make a call etc, but after 30 minutes lost signal again....
Kris
on AT&T / same firmware, no roaming issues.
Any fixes for this issue?
Hey guys,

my phone is suffering from the same problem!

however when i contacted T-mobile they said am not on roaming!

U Using it in india? Which network u using?
Any updates?
I did find out that the CSC that was applied by default was KOR. I went in and changed this to BTU using *#272*imei#, but still did not solve the issue.
Wondering if a repartition would help?

If u do not wish to root then your only option is to take it back to the store, so they can fix, u bought the best smart phone available on the market and u can't make phone calls or browse internet(without wifi).
To my understanding, still no resolution on this..
My friends phone after being updated (he just got his first update after having the phone a month) is now roaming as well.. So this is definately something either with our network (t-mobile) or the recent updates.
I've just started living with it, but it sucks becuase it does silly things like makes me click 'download image' when someone sends me a picture message in text...
with the few bugs could be ironed out of this phone kinda frustrating.
I do have similar problems since I installed an update 2 weeks ago. at home the phone says it is roaming at work approx 6 miles away and with a different station I am connecting to it is fine.

Thats interesting, no matter where I go i get roaming. Though a few times I have gotten the 'roaming' warning popped up, so maybe i went out of roaming and didnt know it? I'll keep a closer eye on it.
It is very frustrating and annoying. I've called T-Mobile and they said they would open a case with Samsung. If you guys could call too, we might get a fix.
I really suspect it is something in the CSC. Maybe if we could get the T Mobile SIII CSC and apply it?

My suspicion is wrong. I pulled the TMB CSC from a T999 ROM and manually copied it to /system/csc/TMB, then used the CSC Selector App to change to TMB.
No dice. Still in Roaming.

Samsung S3 on Three

Hello,
Anyone one got one from three.co.uk? I'm finding the software is clunky out of the box. Is that because the three ROM is rubbish?
Thanks
What part do you find clunky?

When answering a call the screen transition lags, the animation when closing and opening apps stutters.
Have you tried upgrading the firmware?
The newer ones are significantly smoother than the original stock.
If you want more "smoothness" then I'd recommend a custom aftermarket rom such as Wanamlite or Omega

Hi,
I'm also on Three UK. Currently using Omega 9.1 (Firmware:XXBLG1, Modem:XXLFB, CSC:H3GALE4).
It functioned better than the original stock but I bought the phone 2 days after it was released in the UK so I never tried any of the stock firmware upgrades via Kies. I'd be interested to hear how you get on of you go this way. What version on you on?
Aside from using it as a phone I primarilly bought it to act as my home broadband provider on the "All-you-can-eat" data package as my landline internet connection is appalling (I live in rural Cornwall!).
So I'd also be interested if you ever experiment with different ROM/MODEMS & CSCs and what works best for you. Three in the UK are unique in that the transmit using UMTS protocol on 2100MHz frequency so I wonder if the Three specific modem which for me was originally NELE4 works better - I am thinking of re-flashing that modem but at the moment I am offshore so there's little point.

Well, isnt it a feature depending on your carrier (firmware)?
Gesendet von meinem E5823 mit Tapatalk
Yes this is carrier specific.
They will supply an app on Play if so.
Works on EE in the UK, it's a menu setting not an app.
Where exactly is the menu setting for wifi calling? I can't seem to find it on mine. If it matters, I got the Taiwan version of the phone and am with MetroPCS in the States.
For me it's in settings, under device, call. UK EE.
I am on EE and purchased my phone from Handtek hence preloaded with European Generic Stock firmware.
I can only assume @ewans has purchased the device from EE directly, which would have the EE branded Stock firmware which would have that setting built in by the carrier/EE.
I read when researching why I hadn't got this WiFi calling setting that carriers would be sending out firmware updates with these new settings (this finding is based on a different phone but the principle of carrier providing the update must be telling.) Looks like Sony stock unbranded firmware excludes this feature.

Yes, directly from EE.
Guess this confirms it (image attached.)
You require a carrier stock Sony firmware to obtain the feature.
If desperate for native WiFi calling with your carrier then you would need to update your Sony firmware to run your carriers version of it.
As long as your carrier supports WiFi calling and has the z5c officially supported like EE has then you will source the carrier firmware in xperiafirm.
The sacrifice clearly will be the added bloatware you will get with a carrier branded stock firmware.
Yep. I figured out that this was a carrier feature on my own probably around the time you mentioned it here. That sucks, cause my carrier, MetroPCS, has wi-fi calling available, but are highly unlikely to carry the Z5. Dang.
An alternative if you're in the US is to install Google Hangouts Dialer and get a Google Voice number. I switched from Verizon to T-Mobile here in the states, so I just ported my old Verizon number to Google Voice for a one time, $20 fee. With Hangouts Dialer, calls to US numbers are free, and if you're on Wifi, you can receive calls using your Google Voice number.

That picture displays a "T-Mobile" option. That makes me think that there is a chance wifi calling works on the T-Mobile network. Can anyone confirm this? If so, I will be purchasing this phone ASAP.
T-Mobile's website confirms that they do wi-fi calling. At least here in the States.

I know that they have wifi calling but I am 90% sure that this only applies to devices that they sell themselves. (Meaning that unlocked devices such as the Z5C will not have the wifi option). I just find it interesting that the phone itself has an option to select T-Mobile wifi calling if T-Mobile has had no plans to support it. Wouldn't Sony have removed this from the list if it wasn't compatible? Maybe there is hope for the future.
T-Mobile is also a carrier in Europe. The link in the previous screenshot might be referring to the places in Europe that carry the T-Mobile branded z5c. There appears to be a version of the firmware that is for T-Mobile on Xperifirm:
Maybe someone in the US on T-Mobile can try that out and see if there is wifi calling enabled? I am on the .32 firmware and don't want to revert back.
I flashed to T-Mobile Austria, and no luck on the wi-fi calling feature. Doesn't show up on the menu it should.
Hello, I'm on ee new phone but despite carrier saying they have activated and recent update I don't have this option. Those that do, are there Sip settings if so can you share them
EE Stock Firmware
I know this is counter intuitive to most on here but i want to go back to EE firmware.
I work in a Low reception office so WiFi calling had been a dream come true rather than running around the office trying to find signal. I also live in a 4G+ area which was also wonderful so I would like to get both back (broke phone and insurance have sent me an unbranded one with Stock firmware) so does anyone know where I can get the Stock EE Firmware I can flash via Sony's Flashtool?
I've searched google for 2 days and all I can find it posts and discussions on the newest stock update and/or rooting neither of which I want.
Thanks in advance.

So by the looks of it Vodafone are the 1st in UK.

Will keep poking around to see if there are any other changes.
tell me, why should it be provider related?
as i understand (coming from OP6, so maybe i missunderstand) the normal firmware will be updated, no matter what provider information you have, as it comes with da different kind of "firmware" package? so everybody should (in a perfect world) get it as fast as the others?

There's the Manufacturer provided firmware (which would be nice to have) and then there's the Carrier provided version with their own "tweaks" in.
The manufacturer (in this case Huawei) will supply it to the Carriers who then add on their own customisations.
It's not unusual

Sounds like we should get some Sim cards for the fastest carrier update. If a phone is sold sim free it shouldn't have any kind of carrier tweaks
So I brought my phone from 3. But I have a Vodafone and EE SIM in it. Never put a three sim in it. Am I still reliant on three for updates?

Question S23 - call recording - possibility of changing CSC ?

I know the question is probably too early, but it is essential for my pre-order
Does anyone know if it will be possible to change the CSC and activate call recording in the S23? ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...-without-rooting.4404139/page-2#post-86459667 )
Is there any information about it somewhere?
Thx!
VERY Good news:
Europe, Asia, MidEast, Africa, Oceania, South America, North America (without USA/Canada), regions will have same "B" models - SM-S911B/SM-S916B/SM-S918B.
No "E" model found in lot of pre-order shops I checked.
(It looks likes S21 series)
I hope CSC change still works!
Maybe not good for USA (U/U1), Canada (W), South Korea (N) and China (0) regions users.

No, not by ODIN. Modded ODIN will "brick" it.
