Anyone find a charger that can actually charge the phone while using the GPS? I have a modified charger with the center pins tacked together and the Samsung genuine car charger, neither of which can keep up with the drain.
Anyone have positive evidence that their charging solution will at least maintain battery life while GPS + screen are running?
I'm at a loss and tired of spending money on chargers that aren't up to the task.

I have the Samsung car mount that comes with a Samsung car charger. Not sure if that's the same charger you have, but I've used it on a road trip so far and it definitely maintains and charges a little. 14 hours of driving btw.
I attempted to call Samsung Accessory support this morning to find out if that charger is different than the basic charger and they were giving me the run around. I didn't want to spend $XX on another charger unless I knew it had a higher output.
Can you give me the spec's on it?
I know the basic samsung charger only puts out 750mA.
I have used numerous chargers in the car while running GPS and none of them actually seem to charge the device; they just keep it "treading water".
Truth is, with the screen size being what it is, and likely both cores firing at full capacity, I don't think it's entirely realistic to expect the thing to charge while doing something so data intensive as GPS; especially, when you consider that your data signal can and will vary WILDLY while driving through different places, which absolutely and invariably will stress the battery even further, contributing to drain whether plugged in or not. That's a lot of work for a relatively small device to handle.
Just my $.02 coming from a mix of experience and common sense.

Hell, I'd be happy with treading water, way better than the steep downhill fall I've got going on.
Can limit processor speed by throttling it manually with my OC kernel or by enabling the saving mode the phone has innately. Can reduce data by switching off 4G.
It doesn't need those things to run as a GPS. The GPS itself doesn't seem to eat much battery at all but I realize the screen is huge. However, how can this be a viable device if we can't figure out a way to make it WORK?
I hope that camaroz28 can get back to me on this.

There is no writing on it at all so I have no idea what it's output current is.
As an aside, I've heard of a lot of people just getting a small DC->AC converter and then using the original wall charge adapter to charge in the car.

You can confirm that your phone will charge, albeit slowly, with the provided adapter that comes with the Nav mount?
I'm not a big fan out DC to AC car adapters.

Yes, after driving for 7 hours, my batter went from something like 52% to 60%. Don't remember the exact numbers, but it went up. This was while switching between google navigation and an app called "GPS HUD" with Pandora running in the background. Data was mostly HSPA/HSPA+ except for the beginning and end of the trip where I was in LTE cities.

Maintain a fully charged spare battery in auto
Tried about every auto charging fix I could find on this forum. Still get about 2% per hour discharge. I'm routinely in and out of my car 8-10 hours a day so end up with a dead battery. My fix (not elegant but works) is to maintain a fully charged spare battery in my van using a charger for extra batteries.
Of course could not do this with my iphone which is now relegated to my grandkids for games and music.
I love this forum. Great help to me.

Same, I actually have 3 spare batteries and a spare battery charger. I don't want to have to fool with changing my battery in the car though. I've already ordered the charger from the other thread, should have it by Saturday to try that puppy out.
I'm an engineer, and I travel quite a bit.
The GPS software you use makes a huge difference. If you want the phone to charge, don't use Waze. During a test one day, Waze plugged in drained more battery than Navigon did while unplugged. Mine charges with Navigon and Pandora running simultaneously. I haven't tested Google Navigation yet, I'm going to do that today. The charger I use is a 2.1A Belkin AutoCharger made for iPhones. I'm using a USB extension cable with manually shorted data pins. I get 800-something mA out of it, unfortunately not the full 1000 the stock wall charger puts out. Running an inverter in the car with the stock charger I can get Waze to charge, but that's just not worth it for me. Too much gear in the just to charge a phone.
i am happy to report that the inductive charging pad i bought at verizon wireless today (lg wcp-700) will work thru an otterbox defender!!!

what kind of charge are you pulling?
I know you didn't ask me, but it outputs 500mA per the specs from the paper on the box.
5V/500mA
It also cites 19V/1000mA but I have no idea how that is accomplished. I assume outside the US where they don't use 120V.

19 volt is the input.
What kind of charging speed are you getting through that defender? I'm getting 21% increase per hour through a thin case while on WiFi.

That is just too slow. Wireless charging would be ideal in the future when it becomes vastly available within open areas not only limited to the small charging pad, but as of now it just does not have any advantages in comparison to a standard micro USB cable; more faster, portable, direct access to storage while charging, and most abundantly available.
Well, it does have the advantage of being convenient. I would just drop it off the pad overnight.
Otherwise, yeah, it has some room to grow. A lot of the problem is that quite a bit of electricity is wasted currently.

Its more of a convenience than anything at this time. I've got 2, one sits by my desk at work, the other on my nightstand at home. Its great at work. If you get a call you can just snatch it up quickly without having to worry about the cord, and same deal at home, don't have to worry about breaking the USB port on them early morning alarms.

It's not that slow, why do people seem to keep complaining about it? If ur getting less than 5 hrs sleep at night, and ur battery is under 20% when you do shut down for the night, then yeah, you may have some difficulty with this.
Wireless charging has been just slightly faster than usb charging for me. I think that with that rate and the convenience added, it is more than worth it. I was concerned about it before I got the phone, but after testing it, the battery life is double what I'm used to, so I just don't need to charge it as often. I use my phone quite a bit through the day, of the charger at 5:30 this morning, no charging during the day and I'm still at 45%.

X2 on that, I'm pretty sure a lot of people have had to return/replace/repair/claim broken phones because of damage and abused usb ports, I know I have, just last week actually. And with this little usb flap, it looks so clean to keep it covered, I don't want to destroy the little guy.

sorry, but 500mah is a very slow charge these days when some other phones/tablets are coming with 2000mah chargers.

I can confirm this, I had to position it just right but it does work through the Otterbox surprisingly.

If the phone supports inductive charging and/or has an inductive charging back that can be used.
I ordered the LG wireless charger but verizon accidentally sent me the nokia one. I actually like the nokia one BETTER as it is smaller and is black in color. It seems to work well. It def doesn't charge as fast as my wired charger but wireless charging is very fast as well. I took a 10-15 minute shower and it went up 5% which isn't too bad.

I can't get any recognition through my just delivered Defender using a previously working LG wc-700.
Edit: I take that back I just ddin't have the phone high enough on the pad. It's now charging. Thx.
More OtterBox news: My fav ProClip just release a mount that apparently works with a Defender on which is a new one to me. I've always opted out on a case as they would never fit in my car mounts butthis may vhange everything. This one specifically mentions iPhone 5 but the sizes list seem to fit the DNA Defender. I have a question into them for help before I order.

What are the negative repercussions from constant or intermittent charging? I understand that it's detrimental to let the battery drain completely before charging, but constantly putting it on the pad only to pull it off again isn't harmful?

If you're concerned about overnight charging, don't be. Wireless charging your phone overnight is basically the best use for wireless charging. If you're looking for a quick boost in power, you might be better off going with a good ol' USB cable. Each has their own pros/cons.
If you use your phone often, usb may be better, if you like to put your phone down, wireless charging may be better.

My main concern is only that in 6-8 hours of being on the wireless charger, will i have a full charge in the morning if i most likely am close to a dead battery by the end of the night? i can always plug it back in for 2 hours at my office on the usb3 into a wall and make extra sure i have a full charge before heading to the field at 1, which i wont have access to a charger until 9 or 10 pm. also curious if the wireless charging plate will work through the otterbox defender?

I loved wireless charging on my S3. I sit at a desk most of the day and run out into the shop every 20-30 minutes for something. I loved being able to set my phone on the desk and keep the battery topped off without added stress to the charging port by plugging it in and unplugging it all the time. I'm not sure if I'll go to wireless charging on the Note 3 since it add's a little thickness to the phone and makes it harder to find a case that fits. I'll make that decision later.

I bought the wireless charging strip for my s4 9$ on amazon worked with the stock battery and back. But its too slow and requires I put the phone down for long periods of time so I just got extended batteries and swap them out every couple days. I imagine the note 3 will be the same deal

Where I use it
After trying various uses for the charging pad, I ultimately went with using it at work near my desk. It really doesn't add much more convenience in situation where you are going to be setting the phone down once and charging it for a while, like overnight on your nightstand. The real benefit is in a place where you would be picking the phone up and down a lot. I had the usb cord at my desk but I used to often forget to plug it back in when I would get back to my desk, even though i would set it down right near the cord. Now I just set it down on the pad and I rarely leave work at the end of the day with less than a full charge.
I had a previous model of this unit which was at the old "slow" charge rate and was so pleased to get the new and improved version. They even fixed the few issues I had with the older version. This model has the charging cable in back instead of sticking out the side, the LED indication light is much dimmer, although larger, which makes it easy to see where to place the phone in a dark room and not act like a flashlight while trying to sleep.
The display angle is acceptable, it works well through a case, although I haven't tried a Defender case yet and the fit is more secure than even the Samsung charger..
The unit uses a microUSB connector and a 2.1A adapter, not included.

I have a fake wireless samsung charger but my phones gets a bit hotter then when i use my cable to charge so i stopt using my wireless charger. How hot does your phone get because i doubt that there is a fan inside your charger so hope you can awnser me.

I'm getting ready to jump over to S8 or S8+ when available and I think this charger is a good place to get ready since it supports fast wireless charging as well.

and it can charge on both horizontal and vertical. good way to stream while charging your device (but slowly charges)

Haha, looks and feels are the least things I worry about when it comes to tech in my head.
I came from 5.5 and 5.7 inches phone and seems like that's where my comfort size (giggity) landed while using it.
s7 is great but little too small, I could have gotten s7 edge but I didn't have to pay for s7, so I went with it.
but you're right.. s7 is beautiful comparing to s8 leak photos and videos. but I'm curious to see how that infinite display thing goes. probably a marketing gimmick.

Yea, the reason i went for the s7 was because it had a homebutton and no curved screen but now that the S7 has curved on all screen and no homebutton i really think ill change phone brand again because i really hate onscreen buttons on my phone before the s7 which was a z5 xperia. But dont you have nougat installed? I think the battery life got so much better with that update that i might stay with the s7 for a extra year and hope the homebutton will return on the s8 or maybe under the screen but it should always be on the fron and not on the back.
But to get back at the subject, i saw that you own one of these chargers also right? Does the phone get hot while charging?
I replied with your quote above on my first comment. charger itself gets warm but not hot to touch. My s7 battery temperature doesn't go above 35°C during the charge. I'll post another screenahot via battery monitoring tool when I get home to charge.

3c battery monitor widget pro is what I use. I think it read better than ampere plus it provides more information regarding battery stats. I like this app the best.

After reading this thread I have now got this great charger. It charges with a thick cover on the phone.
Bought it. Design cool, led is not too bright in dark, it's easy to use both in horizontal and vertical stand.
But, I could not get it to charge it fast, it's always showing standard charging (ampere says 500mA on average, so a standard usb current). I tried two chargers, one is Samsung rated at 1.8A and the other is 2A. I use slim Ringke case and tried charging with and without it on.
OK, I tried another charger, the official one for S7, and this one DOES support Fast Wireless Charging. The reason is that the charger support Fast Adaptive Charging. So be vary, having just a 2.0A charger doesn't guarantee fast charging, it needs to have FAC support.
I recently got a ZeroLemon battery case for my s20 ultra and wanted to post some feedback for others.
Most important - battery life. I get about 2-3 solid days of battery depending on usage. I average about 5-6hrs screen on time for 3 days. That's with location, Bluetooth, wifi, nfc, aod, smart watch connected at all times. This also includes 3-4hrs a days playing locally stored music and using galaxy buds+. Screen time it's for YouTube and gaming while also browsing forums/sites.
Bulk - this case is bulky, but it's a 8k mAh case. So there's really nothing you can do about size when you have a battery that big. So it's acceptable.
Charging - this doesn't seem to fast charge or even charge using the included 25w charger that comes with the s20 ultra? Maybe I'm doing something wrong?
It also doesn't appear to charger with the wireless fast charge duo pad from Samsung. The pad blinks red?
Overall - this is a great battery case for somebody that needs juice for a few days without access to power or heavy gaming sessions on the go. I know this will come in very handy for those weekends I typically have in these situations.

Charging - this doesn't seem to fast charge or even charge using the included 25w charger that comes with the s20 ultra? Maybe I'm doing something wrong?
-It should be working. Or you may use other charging cords.
It also doesn't appear to charger with the wireless fast charge duo pad from Samsung. The pad blinks red?
-The battery case supports to be wirelessly charged, please try to check if it is placed on the center part of your charging pad. Just try to adjust its location please.

It works with fast chargers, just not the Samsung 25w. It's on the pad fully. It works with others wireless chargers, just not the fast Samsung wireless chargers.

How can you guys make a case for the two big phones with good battery life and complete exclude the small S20 with the worst battery life?
