AOSP Settings - Fire HD 6 and 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
We have root now. Is there any way to access normal settings that are seen on Nexus devices (AOSP)?
Thanks,
Mike

Interesting idea. I'm not sure

[Q] GPS on DRH 4.2.x CM10.1

First of many, many thanks to all the devs at DRH for their efforts in porting Androids latest and greatest to our grab. You guys have done an amazing job. In particular, installing this ROM was a breeze (once I found the right zip).
I need your help getting GPS navigation to work. I have a GPS Bluetooth dongle which is paired but does not seem to communicate th. coordinates to the nav app. For verification I used 'GPS Test' but even though it says that GPS is on no coordinates are shown. This was a problem with a previous ROM I tried based on 4.1 which didn't communicate with my dongle either. A few months back I was on HC and
installed a file called bluetoothprovider.apk which made it all work but I can't use it here. I only mention it to point out that the problem is not due to a faulty dongle.
I hope someone knows anything about this and is able to help. I'd certainly would be grateful.
Thanks in advance.
I just found that there is a build 2 available. I'm gonna try that one.
Didn't work either... (insert expletives here)
Talk to herbert1. See if his BlueGPS4Droid works with your BT GPS.
Thanks for the suggestion but before I do I found that I need to enable 'mock locations' in the developer's option but that option is missing from the settings menu. How come it's not there?

I found it: Settings/About tablet/build number tap it 7 times and the dev options appear.

Good news: having found the developers options menu I was able to check 'Mock Locations'. With the 'Bluetooth GPS' app I finally saw location data on my tab. Now I can take on the road with me as a trusted navigation companion. All is well that ends well!
One more post and I can finally participate in the dev forums .....
tada...

[Q] AOSP Guidance

So I've posted in various forums on certain ROMs with questions about things, but I just haven't been able to seem to find the right fit yet.I love AOSP and the ability for customization, Active Display, etc. Maybe someone can help me out here if I say what I'm looking for. Perhaps someone knows if these things are in a certain AOSP ROM. Here's three things:
1.) Hotspot that allows me to see who's connected and maybe name the device that's connected (i have a few things that connect to the hotspot)
2.) Native SMS app that allows me to continue to type after reaching 160 characters (some stock apps stop progress at 160)
and
3.) I know it probably can't be native, but some sort of S-PEN functionality (I use "Screen Write" a lot)
Anyone have suggestions based on this? Thanks for your continued help and development!

1. HotSpot usually has Access-Control which (when enabled) displays who is connecting or trying to connect (you can allow or deny)
2. I've never run into this. I am pretty sure Hangouts doesn't have this.I prefer 3rd party SMS anyway
3. For AOSP S-Pen use CM S Pen Add-on(ROOT)
I hope this helped some, good luck!
Thanks, but regarding your first point on aosp the only options for setting up the Hotspot are ssid, security type and password, is there another spot to bring up access control? Thanks for the other info!

It is probably ROM dependent, which ROM are you using at the moment?
EDIT: you might try this WiFi Tether app, always backup first just incase.

I'm trying out the pac-man nightly by kenzolo, i'll try and see if that wifi tether app works for AOSP Thanks
You're welcome, I hope you're able to get your phone setup just the way you want it.

Switch to ART?

I don't see it in Developer Options, but was curious if it could be done manually...

Pretty sure that's not possible yet. As soon as android L will be released you'll get it on the watch, but the dev setting to switch is a Nexus only I think.
Well, I just looked in /system/lib and libart.so and libart-compiler.so do not exist so I guess it's a no go.

Root Tether

I realize there are multiple threads on this. But unless I'm blind - which I may be - I can't find a final solution.
I can not tether on my rooted DNA. WiFi Tether does not work. I have tried multiple versions. I don't know if it makes a difference, but the MSSClamping option is not available. Even still, it won't start.
I've tried 1-Click - that says it requires a subscription.
I've tried FoxFi. That sets up some VPN tunnel then doesn't start.
Any leads for a successful solution?
I have several rooted Roms posted with native tethering enabled, since most 3rd party apps no longer work on kit Kat.
So, the best solution, which works, is to run a Rom with native tethering enabled for all users or modify the Rom you're running to do the same.

Thank you. Unfortunately I'm in an area cursed with the Verizon Trolling of custom ROMs. Anything other than Stock Root results in SMS sending issues.
I'm not a programmer by any stretch, but have been modifying phones for a while based on all of you wizards' work. Is modifying the current ROM a "simple" task?
A little research has shown there is an "entitlement hack" for other phones. Does that hack exist for the DNA?
Still searching...

Just a stab in the dark fur you but.. I would think that sms/mms problems would be from your setup(apn, system selection etc.) and if big brother is tagging you I suggest a firewall.. That said were all pretty much on or used Verizon /Santods rom my tether works great..
Im going to start a thread about every ones ideas..

Thanks a bunch. You may find a thread of mine buried deep on here somewhere about this problem back in Feb/March. I had just gotten my DNA and ended up with the issue of not being able to send. It became a general consensus that VZW was testing some sort of blacklisting of custom ROMs in certain areas. I've not heard of a solution yet. I've tried multiple ROMs, all with the same outcome.
I look forward to your thread and whatever brainstorming comes from it.
Thanks!

Are you saying that "Tether hacked for all users" on the NuSenseSIX ROM will allow me to use what appears to be native tethering... and I won't be charged an additional fee from my wireless carrier?
Thanks for all of your hard work.

That's correct.
Any love on this? Someone point me in the right direction to get sms working on a ROM other than stock?

[Q] Forking AOSP to save changes (Root/App Ops)?

Hi all,
First off, I'm an experienced developer, but new to building Android. I'm looking to create my own personal ROM for my Nexus 4, stock AOSP but including root and App Ops. However, I have a couple of questions and clarity issues:
1) What is the proper way to fork AOSP so as I make my changes, they can be saved long term?
I've followed threads like this for setting up and looked into this to try to figure out the most efficient way, but it's not sinking in, so I guess I need a bit of hand holding.
2) Is it possible to enable App Ops in Lollipop pre-compilation?
I see tons of threads on enabling App Ops in JellyBean after compilation by modifying the Settings.apk, but I can't seem to find a way to enable it in the actual source code. Can anyone point me in the right direction? If anyone has guides for adding root and/or the battery percentage hack, that would be helpful as well, but admittedly I haven't done my due diligence searching those on my own yet.
Thanks in advance,
B.
i hope you get what your after.. missing AppOpps / privacy guard is what is preventing me from moving to Lollipop.

I'm sure there are lots of other ROMs that have this out by now already, but if you want something that's 99.9% factory, mine is compiling now. Assuming my testing works, it will be bone stock LRX21T with a few minor modifications:
Enabled App Ops
Root friendly
Full rotation (including 180 degrees)
I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks,
Ben
thanks Ben. I actually found an AppOps app in Google Play which works on Lollipop!

Could you reply here with a link to the App you located for anyone else who may be looking for this?
I just finished up my ROM actually. It's a base AOSP compilation for the Nexus 4 that is:
Root friendly
Has Busybox (for root backups)
AppOps
180 degree screen rotation
Modifications/Fixes to enable GApp support
That last one took a while, as location doesn't work out of the box with Google Location Services. It turned out to be a tiny tweak in the compile signing. Anyway, I just need to add the su binary into the ROM and it's done if you want it.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.findsdk.apppermission
This appopps is working on LP
Thanks sage. I'll likely continue to use my own ROM since future updates won't break my changes or lose root, but that will help many people out who find this thread.
