I have Z2 with latest 5.0 build (.28). 1-2 days since i updated my phone, camera app stopped working. I opened it and it's just a black screen with control buttons. It doesn't make pictures. I tried to reset my phone with PCC, but problem stayed. I downloaded other camera apps from Play Market and they also didn't work, then i turned off stock camera app (in settings) and other camera apps worked fine. When i turn stock camera app back it works for some hours and then again black screen.
Is it a SW or HW problem? Does enyone know what to do?

I have the same problem
i have never faced this problem, but i have heard that it was a couple of bugs in the 5.0.2 builds.
Try to upgrade your firmware and se if it works better

Got the tab a week ago. The front facing camera was working fine, tried it again today and the color was all screwed up. Is this a hardware or software problem? The back camera still works fine. The picture attached was taken from the front camera.
I would think it is a software issue. Did you install any rom or photo software?
Nope. Havent installed any camera apps or messed with any settings.
If you have root, and you can try flashing a fresh rom.
I have exactly the same issue on my Nexus S. Back camera also works fine. I have stock 4.1.2. Never flashed anything else. Phone version is I9023XXKI1. I know it worked flawlessly for months in skype. Then it changed to this weird color mode for some calls and back without any apparent reason. Now it doesn't change anymore. It just stays this way. I tried to change many settings, nothing helps. I'm also attaching image.
This is the only post I found that seems to be the same as my problem. The hardware is different (well, they are both from Samsung) but result is the same.
since new camera never worked i upgraded stock firmware made a factory reset but the problem is still there, the camera keeps a black screen freezes, buttons dont work and sometimes it says "camera fail"
would it be a hardware issue?
The camera should work with stock (out-of-the-box) firmware. You did the right thing and flashed newer firmware and also factory reset.
That should have fixed it if it was firmware issue...........
Rooting and installing any custom firmware would be a waste of time.
It's obviously a hardware issue, so re-flash the original firmware and return it for replacement asap.

Hi, I have bit different symptoms.
My back camera is working fine but I have problems with my front camera.
When I use my front camera it shows very darker screen than other GS3.
Also, when I want to switch from front to back camera it lags and switches after 5 seconds.
Sometimes it gives me error message when switching and it kicks me out to the home screen.
I don't know what is wrong.
I did the factory reset and the symptoms were still there.
When I reflashe the phone the symptoms are gone but it appears later.
I thought it was caused by one of the apps so deleted all the apps I have one by one.
Did not work out.
Will this be a hardware problem?
Just updated to Lollipop on the latest generic firmware (23.1.A.0.726) and all was great initially until I decided to try to video my goddaughters first steps.
I was then greeted with a "Unknown Error" on the 4K Camera, and the camera also Force Closed on the regular video camera function.
Is there a fix available for this, as I know the camera works perfectly under Android 4.4, but I have had nothing but problems on Android 5.0
I have taken a look in the exisiting bugs thread for Lollipop but nobody seems to have the same issue...
Have you concidered resetting your phone
See this is the wierd thing....
I've done some googling and it appears it may be a generic Android Lollipop bug that Google is aware off...
And yes, rebooting the phone does somehow clear the issue, but surely this is not the answer to have to keep rebooting the phone just to get the video camera working??
Are you sure you haven't used the flashlight before? Lollipop has a bug when after using the flashlight for a couple of minutes the camera doesn't work anymore.
I never use the flashlight on my phone :-/
Happens to me as well, but occasional random or planned reboots related to Xposed framework and modules mitigated video issues..
Hmm...that's even wierder then as my phone is purely stock...no unlocked bootloader, no root.
Hmm. At least we can rule out an unlocked bootloader as a cause now (two other users and I are/were facing the same issue and we all had unlocked bootloaders).
I have a stock rooted G3 running ZV8. One day last week, my rear facing camera stopped working. No warnings or anything like that beforehand, just no longer working. I get a black screen with only a back button and the last pic taken icon, but nothing else. When I try to access the camera from another camera app I get the message that the camera can't be started or is in use by another application.
The front facing camera seems to still be functional, but can only be accessed by a camera app that goes directly to it, like Camera360. I'm at a complete loss as to ideas about whether this is a software issue, or a hardware issue. If anyone else has had issues with their camera no longer working, any info you can give would be greatly appreciated.

I am having the same problem, and it just appeared out of nowhere as well... I have tried clearing the camera apps cache and data and have wiped davlick from twrp but to no avail. Going to try wiping and reinstalling the rom and will get back to you if it works.
I am running the stock rooted rom :S

Since about a month all my cameras (front/rear/wide angle) have stopped working.
If i launch the camera app, the app freezes and the screen stays black, if i try to switch the cameras nothing happens, If i go into the service menu and try camera related tests the phone also hangs.
I also tried using gcam and open camera, but the same thing happens.
The camera also doesn't work in social media apps like whatsapp, facebook, instagram.
So far i have tried flashing different custom roms, lineageos 16, 17.1 but the camera also doesn't work there.
Currently i'm using the stock rom (H85030a_00_OPEN_EU_OP_0910.kdz) that i have flashed with lg up, i also did a factory reset afterwards.
Any suggestions are welcome.
Downgrading to marshmellow fixed the problem
i flashed my phone back to oreo afterwards and everything still works fine
