Is it possible to use bluetooth to use the service of one phone through another phone - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to have one phone that is fully activated and on a plan, use bluetooth or wireless , and then have a second phone that uses the service instead of the main phone? My mom just bought a oneplus one, because her little cheap android phones screen is so small she cant see it, but its a CDMA, and her oneplus is GSM. Is there anyway to do something like this?
Example is, if a call comes in to the smaller phone, it rings on the oneplus, or if she texts from it, it sends out through the smaller one, and she can just keep the smaller one in her purse or something as long as its in range?

My mate used an app called bloover, or bloova. Made calls on his phone using my data, used my internet and text service too. It was built into his phone but that was a good few years ago and we cant remember the model.

[Q] HTC Radar Invalid Sim

I just bought a HTC Radar 4g from someone and its brand new with receipt and everything but some reason it doesn't have any service. When i start it up it says t-mobile for 2 seconds then switches to emergency calls only. I have tried my mom and dads sim but it doesn't seem to work either. Can anyone help me with my problem. I have t-mobile and my sim works on my e71x but not Radar.
Is it inserted the correct way?

yeah i made sure it was I saw the t-mobile for like 2 seconds pop up once but that was about it then it went to emergency calls only again. I tried to look for solution but few people have had this problem and im not sure what the problem is.
Try cleaning the sim card with a q-tip. Otherwise it sounds like you got a bad phone or the phone was deactivated by T-Mobile (ie it was stollen)

If the phone was deactivated is there any way I can reactivate it? Ill try the q-tip thing.
You can call up t-mobile and tell them what happend.
cpu BAD or phone library bad? the same to my blacyberry 9000
I also had similar problem (though in my case the phone was an unlocked phone). It would not recognize any Sim (would give Invalid Sim or Sim error), this was for a brand new phone right out of the box. Took it to HTC Service Center. They said motherboard was faulty and needs to be replaced! Finally they relented to replace the unit (HTC Service in India is pathetic.) But the replacement unit they gave is not new one!!! Felt cheated. Have decided not to buy HTC here in India again!! This when I am a loyal HTC customer for years now (am using HTC Sensation as my primary phone and ex-phone was HTC Touch Diamond).
At least the phone itself (ie. Radar) is quite good. Looks good, feels great in the hand (better than Sensation) and battery life is outstanding (I am charging it only every 4th day!) OS also is quite good for what it offers (though there are some frustrating things like Zune dependency etc). Its quite stable also compared to the Sensation (no force closes so far (3+ weeks) while Android just crashes the phone at least every other day (or even multiple times in a single day).

[Q] can I make a rooted phone into a tablet (to work with tablet SIM)?

I would like to take my Moto G (or ANY phone under 5") and make it look like a tablet to T-Mobile. Is that possible?
I like to use a small phone when I'm working out -- because I want Pocket Casts and music and Endomondo (which needs a tiny bit of data). I got an AirVoice plan, which is cheap, but AirVoice is annoying, because it constantly gives you popup messages saying how much data you just used.
I have a T-Mobile tablet SIM which gives me 200mb free per month, and it'd be awesome if I could use that. But it doesn't work in a phone. When I plug it in I get a voicemail saying my access is restricted. And it's about the same with an AT&T tablet SIM.
I'm surprised I can't find any other threads about this, seeing a T-Mobile gives free tablet data, and AT&T has much cheaper tablet plans...
Any help is appreciated. I'd also be happy if I could find a tablet under 5" that takes a SIM. But I don't see any modern Galaxy Player, and certainly nothing that takes a SIM.

I have no idea if what you're trying to do is possible at all, but I can tell you that it's unlikely having root will give you any solution. Regarding things like SIMs, carrier locks/unlocking, and your plans, it's all separate from Android. When you put your SIM in your device, they know what kind of device it's in. And if the SIM is made only for tablets, they can program that into the SIM too.
---------- Post added at 11:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:50 PM ----------
I've been thinking about this, and I thought of a possible solution, but I honestly have no idea id this'll work.
When Samsung came out with their Milk music streaming app, someone figured out how to make it work on any device. Technically speaking, Milk is only available for a few (high end) phones. However, you can side-load it to any Samsung phone and it'll work. You can also use it on any phone brand, but you have to do 2 things:
1. Be rooted.
2. Edit your build.prop to change what Android recognizes your device as being.
If you're already rooted, try doing something like this. My recommendation would be to change your device's ID/name to a Nexus 7, since changing it to something like the Samsung Tab could cause compatibility issues with other apps. Changing it to anything could cause compatibility issues, but I'd expect less trouble with the Nexus 7.
From what I can gather, these are the names/lines you should try editing. MAKE A BACK-UP FIRST.
ro.product.model=Nexus 7
ro.product.brand=google
But again, I have no idea if this will actually work. I don't know if the SIM or T-Mobile detects your device from the build.prop or from something in the firmware.
Thanks... Sounds like a good idea to try.
But apparently Motorola's unlocker web app is down... I emailed them to ask about not being able to unlock my bootloader and got:
The "your device does not qualify for unlocking" issue is due to a back-end outage we are currently experiencing, We are working on restoring this. I will post an update when the server is back online in this thread in the Motorola Owner's Forums Developer Community:

Blah.
Just thought I'd follow up.
I got my Moto G unlocked.
My AT&T sim that I use in my Nexus 7 LTE doesn't work in the Moto G. I get a voicemail notification, but internet access doesn't work. My T-Mobile tablet sim works, though. So I can get my free 200MB per month.
But it still pops up a voicemail notification about restricted access or something every single time I reboot the phone, and I can't delete it so the icon just stays there. But I was able to setup Tasker to clear the cache of the Phone process every time I reboot, which makes the little icon go away.
So now I'm happy. I can use my Moto G as an iPod, and the 200MB of data per month is plenty for just using Endomondo and syncinc the position of my podcasts in Pocket Casts (since I'm only actually downloading new content while I'm on Wi-Fi).

Bluetooth only version?

Any chance of Samsung making a Bluetooth only version of this? Maybe it could be a bit thinner since it wouldn't need a sim.
I really like this watch but I don't need it's 3G functionality.

that would be nice. from what I can see at this point there's only one version and it's going to at&t. I was hoping t-mo would get it.
So I would need 2 cellphone lines? One for my phone other for watch ?but yet somehow the watch can see messages on my phone?

I assume that would be the case. I don't see the point in that myself. I just want to be about to check notifications, reply to messages, control my music and see some basic information. All of that should work just fine using just Bluetooth.
In Japan, the model without 3G version will be released.

You would need to set up the Gear S with the phone for the first time after that you can forward your calls to the Gear S but to download you still need the phone which is pointless. I will just wait for someone to sell it on Craigslist and I will just use the bluetooth only side I agree the 3G I don't need. At&T, Sprint and a few others will have it. It's basically charging the same price as a Tablet plan its just a smartwatch instead

How good is the Gear S as a phone?

Hello, I own a Galaxy Note PRO 12.2 LTE but it is a bit inconvenience to use it to make phone calls sometimes. I am considering to buy the Gear S making/receiving phone calls and also as a device to notify me to check my Note PRO 12.2 whenever somebody sends me message. (Easier to type on a large device.)
I heard that the speaker of the phone is located at the back of the watch. Since that area touches the wrist when the user is wearing it, I wonder if it makes it difficult to hear the voice of the other person. Also, do other people hear the user's voice clearly? Is there any noise cancellation system? Any experience appreciated. Thanks.
The device is not out yet so we really cant answer your question. I dont think you can use the Gear S as a stand alone phone 100% of the time though. Watching the intro video it showed calls being forwarded to the Gear S. That makes me think that you have to have your main phone on.
Did you say you can make calls from your LTE Note Pro? If so I would like to know how to do this. That would be a nice set up then if you can use that as your phone.
I thought that it functioned as a standalone phone? Sure you can connect them and call though your phone, but that is not what I would want.
I have owned one since 15 October. I was fortunate to get a free unit but had to pay full price for a Note 4.
I am using it with a multi-sim service, ie 1 phone number, multiple sims. This is so I can share my data quota and still have both my Note 4 and Gear S active without the need for a wifi hotspot.
The primary SIM is on the Gear S, and it is only tethered to the Note 4 if I want to download apps or updates. I make and receive calls on the Gear S WITHOUT needing a separate phone, but I am using a bluetooth headset with it.
If you don't use a headset, the speaker is serviceable in a quiet room or if you're in the car, since it's somewhat muffled. One odd behavior I found is that even though you have a headset, it defaults to the built in speaker all the time. I have to quickly anwer the call and tap the headset icon to switch it to the headset.
As to battery life, at best it lasts from about 9am to 6pm, at worst, with several calls, it lasts till around 3pm.
You COULD actually adjust the strap and wear BOTH the charger and watch together, having a huge bulky item on your wrist hahahaha, but it will extend your battery by at least a couple more hours.
I will be happy to answer any other questions.
Have you tried to use a Web browser? If so can you practically do some surfing?
Are those scratches or smudges on the face of the watch? I thought the watch came with gorilla glass. If not, I'll be purchasing a screen protector for the watch.
You can check the [REVIEW] thread for the Gear S and more pics in my G+ post link right at the top of the first post.
Those are smudges from somewhat sweaty hand :π

i used to use my Ipad as a phone with a App called Line2.
I have used Google Voice, Talk a Tone and Textfree with voice on my Samsung WiFi tablets in the past I was able to make and receive calls on my tablet. I have the tab S LTE now I'm hoping to pair the 2 tab S and gear S so I can have one simple card for the both and keep my Note 4 separate

Do you know which features from the Gear S i wont be able to use if i only have the Gear S connected via bluetooth?
I ask because i emailed my carrier sprint and they told i can buy the Gear S out right without a sim card but wont be able to use some features the Gear S as to offer.

Oh OK I don't want a 2 Year contract just for this gear S when I payed in full my Note 4 if you can keep me updated if Sprint decides to email you back that would be cool. I may just have to hold on to my gear 2 until someone sells the gear S on Craigslist/Swappa
Sure NP.
I got my gear 1 from swappa good deals there.

I got my gear 1 from there as well but this one requiring a sim card or uicc card does this mean we have to have a separate number for the gear S on Sprint because it has 3G only. I heard at&t/t-mobile can use the sim card with the same number. But the uicc card is tired to one device only I wonder if this will change somehow

I think except for actual calling and SMS, there shouldn't be anything you can't do as a tethered device. In fact you can even make "proxy" calls and sms since it is treated as an extension of your phone when connected via bluetooth.
Ok thank you.

[Q] Pair 2 phones at the same time to Gear S?

This is probably not possible, but if I have 2 phones (work and private), can I pair both with the Gear S and receive notifications, etc from both parent phones?
No, it's not supported.
Because it's a more complex device than, say, a headset, multi-point is ruled out by the need to have the Gear Manager app controlling the handset's interaction with it.
If you had a Gear S though, then you should in theory be able to do without having to carry two handsets - put one of the SIMs into the Gear itself, then you can still have it connected to the handset with the other SIM and get notifications for both numbers on the Gear that way.

Yes, for the most part this is true.
However...
I also have personal and work phones. The only thing that is frustrating is the text'g. If you have the two paired, the S will only rcv and send texts from phone's #...not watch. And when you make calls, while paired, the number used will be the phone's. I've tried the "Gear Only" option in settings for calls/msgs...so far, always the phone takes precedence over the watch while connected via BT.
I've set it up so the watch is always remotely connected and the call/msg outgoing # option is set to Gear only. As a way to still rcv calls from biz phone, go to phone's provider call settings/calls unanswered, and forward them to watch's # instead of VM. Other than that, I do get notifs from everything else that I checked in the Gear mgr notification list.
Good luck...

Hmm, I guess it won't work for me, because I really don't want external customers to EVER have my personal cell phone number...
And to make it even more complicated, I just had to order a new work phone, which is an iPhone 6
Technically, I need an option to pair the a Gear S with both phones, and have it work as a stand-alone when I chose to carry neither phone.. I am probably a few years ahead in my thinking..
So I will probably just get the iWatch when it comes out and try to figure out a way to explain why I am wearing both at the same time, LOL
Funny, just when you think life just got a little easier, it gets more complicated. I truly dislike apple products, but have 2 iPads (one for work, one I won), am about to get my first iPhone and am going to probably one of those crazy people in line in front of the apple store to get their watch when it comes out.
After owning the Gear S for a month, I can't see how I ever lived without a smartwatch and need that experience for work, too
Thanks for the input! Was not what I hoped, but had expected.
