I'm new here. I didn't root my S3 yet, but I want to do it and install new rom. But first I would need your help with Rom choosing, as I'm completely blind in this matter
The thing is, I would prefer a ROM which let me choose which application I want to install on my phone and which not - check/uncheck option. This rom should be FAST and stable.
As I have no experience at all, I would like to ask you which ROM will be the best for me? Btw, it would be great if I can choose language (Polish).

Hi, I am in the same boat. Stock standard international S3, but extremely slow. Ram usage on startup is 700mb.
Which rom would you guys suggest that is both stable (no bugs), and fast (using much less ram).
This is my everyday phone, I take a lot of photos, especially the camera should be functioning perfectly.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Edit: Last time I rooted and played around with these things were about 3-4 years ago with my Sony X10 mini. I am slowly getting back into it, reading up on the latest rooting apps etc.
@errolpl: Search in development subforum for 'aroma installer'. Usually these ROMs offer only system apps to choose. 3rd party user apps you'll have to install by your own. You can edit the header with edit-function.
@demozzracy: If you want full camera suport, I recommend NCS-ROM: based on last JB-firmware, but brilliant debloated. So slim, fast, battery friendly and all hardware working. I'm testing many LP-ROMs, but they are primarily newer, hardly better (for S3).

I was extremely new just a few weeks back as well. I must say that my attempts on finding a solution for my slow S3 has been a rather hard and bumpy road.
To help you save some time, here is what I've gathered so far:
Last time I flashed phone firmware, a couple of years ago, it required a PC, a cable and some funky software.
Then when I flashed my S3 for the first time, about a year ago, I started out with Cyanogenmod and used their app+cable installer. I think this is still the easiest way to root the phone, and get started with custom roms. Even if you plan to use some other rom than Cyanogenmod.
When the phone is rooted you can install TWRP, simply done via an app on the appstore. TWRP is recovery firmware that can stay on the phone, even though you flash new roms. (The phone is divided into several separate sections, bootloader, recovery, actual system, and data area.... I don't even know much about it yet.) The important part is that it is extremely easy to flash new roms using this tool, and a micro SD-card.
Simply drop the rom zip file onto the card and flash them. (For some roms you need to flash some "GAPPS" as well. These are the google apps, like the play store etc. If you don't flash them you can't really use the phone for much.)
This is where the real problems start. Finding the right ROM.
The S3 is old, and only supported up to Jelly Bean for my 1GB international version, or Kitkat if you have one of the 2gb versions.
This has not stopped developers in providing both Kitkat and Lollipop to any version of the S3. However... as eager they are to provide the newest coolest features, just as lazy do they seem to be with their testing. (Sorry guys, but someone has to say it.)
So I've gone through some roms now... none of them really good.
The first Official Cyanogenmod I flashed half a year ago. I used this for almost a year.. but the camera would crash constantly, and the phone was not able to display video. For example movieclips on facebook.
Second ROM: Cyanogenmod has also stopped developing for the S3, so a few weeks back I switched to some unofficial version. It seemed to work... camera and video was ok, and everything had the nice Lollipop feel to it.
However MMS did not work. I could receive one and send one, next ones would require a reboot for them to work. The problem was brought up in the ROM Q/A tread, but the answer from the developer was: Sorry I don't use MMS so I don't really see a problem.
Third: Onto some next rom. This one was tagged STABLE. It was far from it. In fact it was even easier to discover that this rom had the same MMS problem. Because the message app would crash immediately when trying to send one.
4th attemt was the same rom, but a different kernel... still the same problem.
5th rom was Blisspop... Wau, this was beautiful! Cool webpage, Cool animations.... it was just too bad that the site is dead, and that the rom can't even run for 24 hours without the android keyboard crashing 25 times or so. Also Blisspop has OTA updates... the only problem is that it constantly says that there is a new version for the S3.. but the download fails. Apparently some bad change to the website caused this, and apparently this problem has been going on for 3 months without anyone bothering to fix it.
6th was Archidroid. The second to top ROM for the S3. It looks cool, and has many features... but just as other Lollipop ROMs, sending MMS's without error is not one of them....
I've really tried everything. People always says that the MMS problems are due to APN's not being set up correctly, doing some reboots etc.... but trust me... I've set them up so many times you wouldn't belive it.
7th. After reading this thread and rp158's recommendation of NCS-ROM I'm now running that one. Without a single thing being set up, I was able to send and receive MMS's right away.
However... now I'm stuck back at the ugly kitkat look, and Touch wiz.
tl;dr;
So what do I want to say with all this?
Get root and TWRP and start playing around with ROMs
Lollipop does not look like an option for the S3, at least not right now
Don't let yourself be fooled by nice webpages or [STABLE]-tags, or comments that say: "I've been running this since yesterday.. it's 100% stable!"

As I said in my post, I am ok with the KitKat look, as long as it is stable, I am always on call at work, and cant afford constant phone crashes.
I am going to try the root/twrp to NCS rom in the next couple of days

It's 5 months already that im using S5 Sensation rom for i9300/9305 ( 4.4.4 kitkat). This rom has S5/Note4 features and works great im satisfied. No problems so far, no bugs, etc ^^
It comes with AROMA installer and lets you to choose which apps you want to install and which not.

Device must be rooted + newest cwm recovery installed. After that you just download custom rom, move it to ur phone memory/sdcard and flash it throught recovery mode

https://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager here is the latest CWM versions for smartphones, but its .img file and u cannt flash it directly from Odin. U need to make .img into .tar.md5 odin flash-able file by some tools, or flash it via adb shell, etc.

yeah this means doing a "Factory reset", must be done throught Recovery mode, wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache.
Put ROM on your SD card, then enter Recovery Mode by pressing Home + Volume UP + Power buttons and ull have smth like:
Install Zip -> Choose Zip from /Storage/Sdcard (External SDcard) , Search for ur ROM file and start flashing :X
Flash the SuperSu .zip file same way as flashing ROM.

I am new to SG-A and Android itself. As far as i can say from using this phone for one month now is:
- It is fast (i don't play games)
- It is practical
- It is just VERY NICE
BUT, there are some negative aspects also:
- Battery runs out very fast (1 - 1,5 days) - WLAN/BT/GPS/GP3/2 are switched on manually only when needed.
- Low internal memory (278 MB)?
So, what do i want to do next?
- I would like to improve Battery life duration, and i hear that other ROMs do safe battery life duration.
- I would like to delete all the Samsung Apps and stuff from the phone
Note: I have tried out an app called "juice defender", but i am far from enthusiastic about it - it switches on and off the 3G network automatically what is very practical, but hangs itself up occasionally.
What have i learned on xda-developers.com yet?
- There are instructions on how to root your mobile, to have admin-privileges
- There are instructions on how to update firmware
- There are different ROM's you can use (like Cyanogen and GingerReal)
And - that there is no BEST ROM, only different ROMs for differents tastes.
What would i like to know from you now?
- Is it for real that other ROMs enhance battery life? (more than like 100%?)
- Would you agree to kick out all Samsung apps? Also to free up some internal memory.
- What ROM would you recommend me? As mentioned, i don't play games. I just need a practical and fast operating system on my phone. I make phone calls, write sms, and occasionally look up information on the Internet Browser. And i would like to enhance battery life somehow.
That Cyanogen ROM sounds promising, but ain't ready to use yet?
Others wrote that the GingerReal ROM is the most used one here for SG-A, so can't be a big mistake to give it a try?

Yup. Gingerreal is the most stable. Cyanogenmod roms are still beta so for a new user you may wanna explorer stock based roms and mess with Odin and clockworkmod before going into beta roms. Of course, it's personal preference.
Everything is pretty simple. For Gingerreal, just get a 2.3 update, then get clockworkmod, then flash the rom. Follow instructions in the development threads to the letter, you'll be safe and happy.
I have been using the official 2.3.4 rom with CF-Root, and Link2SD to account for the lack of space, and it works amazingly fast.

hi, i want to give a try to Gingerreal (i am stuck on KPH), can someone explain me (i'm a newby):
- how to install CWM (the link in the official post is broken)
- if i need to root the device first
- if i need to partition the sd in ext4 before flashing the rom (and how do it)
- if i need to wipe data before flashing the rom

In the GingerReal thread there is a link to another thread which has the clockworkmod recovery. download it, power off, boot into stock recovery by holding home while powering up, then install the zip you downloaded. You get clockworkmod then.
You don't need root. After clockworkmod, download the GingerReal zip and install from sd card.
If you wanna use darktremor app2sd then partition your sd card. Google for that.

The point is to have GingerBread bootloader~ it's tested on that firmware so its good if you flash it~ just to avoid problems~

No don't flash it while on an another firmware,flash the firmware to the version stated or you might end up with a bricked galaxy ace.As stated it has been tested on those firmwares and its safe..

Hi All,
Just got my S2 last week. Planning to move to CM7 this weekend. I have rooted the device and am on the Codeworkx kernel. I had a few questions:
1. Is there a problem while flashing via Odin if Debugging is not enabled (I think it is more of a OS feature which we haven't entered when in download mode, so shouldn't matter according to me.) ? I tried to disable debugging, and then went to download mode and Odin did detect the phone, but I did not try to flash anything so if anyone has tried that, your input is more than welcome.
2. The reason for above question is: What if I completely brick my phone (with debugging disabled) and no ROM .zip in the sd storage, how do I get the phone up and running ? I understand that I can flash kernels via Odin, but is it true for ROMs as well ?
3. What's the issue with ROM manager ? Is it recommended to stay away from it for S2 ? I have tried to do a Nandroid backup and it always takes me to the Android robot with a exclamation mark screen. Then I have to reboot and the backup magically restarts and completes successfully. Most people have suggested to use CWM recovery directly, so not sure if I should get rid of the ROM manager altogether.
That should be all for now. I have a jig ready by the way, so am not that worried about the process and plan to do a fair bit of reading before proceeding, however, the answers to above queries would be really great !

I can answer some of your doubts.
I don't know if you can flash via odin in case you don't have the usb debuggin enabled so I'm not going to say anything about it.
Anyway if something happens to your phone and you dont have any ROM on your sd card but you have CWM recovery installed (which is almost everytime the case) then in CWM there is a mount usb stoage option. With it you can easily transfer .zip ROM files to flash, or even a nandroid backup you saved in your PC.
ABout ROM manager, this is what I suggest you. The first time you flash CM7 don't use ROM Manager (I even tried using it with the codeworkx kernel with no luck). Now, once you are in CM7 it works perfectly and it's really helpful to flash nightlies withouth wiping data (I flash half the nightlies as they are realeased). So the first time you flash CM7 wipe everything (do a nandroid backup first), even wipe /system, /data, cache partition, dalvik cache, so you don't have any problems. THen install zip from sd card and when it finish install the zip file again (just two installs in a row no wiping in beween, trust me, the first time I tried I didn't do that and couldn't boot the phone).

EDIT: You can flash stock ROM via odin, there is a thread by infratech were this is explained and you have a list of downloable stock ROMS you can flash with Odin, these are region and carrier specific and you probably will get the one for your carrier. I found the stock ROM for my carrier and I'm from chile, you shouldn't have any problems with that. Well, good luck, CM7 is by far the best ROM I've flashed.
Oh another thing, go for the latest nightly since the battery life is incredibly improved over the RC (or was it stable?) version.

Awesome ! This is exactly what I was looking for. I haven't dived into all the options of the CWM, so didn't know that this feature existed.
Also, many thanks for explaining most of the things in a single concise post, it was very helpful. I'll have to check the ROM flash with Odin, so I will search for that thread and have a go through it later today.
Once I get a hang of CM7, I'll go in for the nightlies as well. And yes, I did read about the CM7 guys revert the status to an RC because of the bugs reported, so will give it a try once I definitely know what I'm getting into .

In other words I can't find the proper kernel. Is there another one that's compatible. Siyah will not work.

You are in fact asking two different questions... If you are looking for a kernel to replace the stock one, I don't know the answer, as I have not tried a clean Canadian stock (I am in Canada, but using LSD-based Disaster ROM with the MA5 modem). I would think PhilZ, Jeboo and Speedmod should work perfectly fine with your ROM. I also don't see any reason why Siyah v6b5 wouldn't work on it, but again, I haven't tried...
However, if you only need root, you don't even need to flash another kernel -- you can keep it completely stock. Just search for signed SuperSU zip by Chainfire, flash it from the stock recovery, and you are get a 100% stock ROM, but rooted. And with SuperSU, you can easily unroot it anytime right from the app, if you need to.
So in case people have the same problem.
What i did was I
1. googled SuperSU zip by chainfire
2. changed file name to update.zip
3. I got a micro sd card and loaded the zip file onto it and put it in my phone
4. I then got into stock recovery mode by pressing the volume up and power keys
5. Then I went to update zip file through sd card in this case external
6. Rebooted
7. Went to google play store and downloaded ROM manager
8. Followed steps to load Clockworkmod onto my phone
9. Rebooted and made sure it was working.
10. Downloaded a ROM and flashed using CWM it changed my kernel and everything.

I didn't realize your goal was to flash a custom ROM... I thought you wanted to root the stock one. You could have done it easier, in just three steps:
1. Flash the temporary CWM from stock recovery.
2. Do a nandroid backup (optional, but highly recommended), and then a full wipe.
3. Flash any ROM of your choice.
BTW, as far as I knew, CWM can't be installed on SGS2 using ROM Manager, since our phone doesn't have a recovery partition, and a custom recovery must be integrated into the kernel...
As a follow up - I too have installed i9100MUGMA5 JB on my S2, which is 4.1.2.
I wish to upgrade to 4.2.2 - as there is a bug fix I need [the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update as part of the Android Open Kang Project (AOKP) custom ROM which was based on the newly released firmware].
I need a Rooted kernel and CWM installed.
Would someone outline the steps I need to take.
I have used ODIN a few times but wonder what I need to do...

i am going to follow this guide to root (the basic one u can find in stickies things )
Step 1. Download Odin3.07 from HERE
Step 2. Power off your Galaxy S3. Then hold down Volume Down, Center Home, and Power buttons together until you see the warning screen.
Step 3. Hit Volume Up button to enter Download mode and connect a microUSB cable from your Galaxy S3 to your computer.
Step 4. Next, download GalaxyS3RootNew.zip, unzip the files and run odin3.07.exe by double-clicking on the file.
Step 5. When ODIN program opens, you should find a highlighted yellow box with a random COM number. If you don’t see this, download and install Samsung USB drivers below:
SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe
Step 6. DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE, hit “PDA” button and select the file CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4.tar.
Step 7. Hit “Start” button. This will install ClockworkMod Recovery on your Galaxy S3 i9300. If you get stuck on this step, just try a different USB port.
Step 8. Once ODIN is done flashing, you will see “PASS!” in green highlighted box.
Step 9. Your Galaxy S3 will reboot once into CWM Recovery and automatically install root and Superuser app.
Step 10. Once your phone reboots, you will find an app called “SuperSU”, this is your superuser app.
Step 11. Download and install Titanium Backup app from Play Store to verify you have root, a Superuser request window should pop up.

No, you don't need any external card to use root. About 10 MB on your internal card should be fine .
CF-AutoRoot isn't same as CF-Root. If you're not going to change your rom/kernel/recovery/etc and you just want to have your stock rom rooted then CF-AutoRoot suits you best. However, if you want to change your rom/kernel/recovery/etc in future then it's highly advised to use CF-Root which basicly roots your phone and installs custom recovery CWM 5.5 afaik.
If you want to choose second option then I'd recommend flashing modern recovery, for example PhilZ Touch, TWRP or even CWM 6.0.3.0. In fact it won't root your phone but most of the "cooked" roms are already rooted so you just need to reflash rom later or use AutoRoot described above. You can also flash CF-Root and then custom recovery, basicly you don't even need any other recovery than CF-Root but it's highly recommended to do so.
can u please give me the advantages of custom roms in breef , why would i need them for ? all what im thinking about right now is Adblocker and such things ..

By the sound of things I would just root for now for the adblocking and then start reading like mad and getting familiar with all the terminology and methodology before going any further.....this is the bit so many people miss and hence end up with a very expensive paper weight and a lot of disappointment and heartache
Basicly "cooked" roms have newest firmware versions, many tweaks, optimization and many things which full stock roms are missing. I'm not going to list all these things, check yourself if you wish.

There are two ways to "flash" software to your device. Using USB cable and computer (via Odin) or directly from recovery. To do so directly from recovery you need custom (non-stock) recovery which gives you an option to do so. CF-AutoRoot gives you root while CF-Root gives you root + old CWM 5.5 recovery (because CF isn't supporting this method anymore). So basicly if you want to have a great time with your device, flash different roms etc. then you can directly flash modern recovery through odin f.e. PhilZ Touch Recovery without needing to use CF-Root.
All i want now is to have a rooted device on stock .. then i will take my time and read if i wanna add ROM/kernel

CF-AutoRoot. Best, easiest and nice solution for rooting full stock rom. You don't need anything else if you're not going to change roms/kernels or whatever.

Actually i would suggest the op also get a cuatom recovery into his phone.
Cuz if he f*** up his phone real bad and doesnt have a pc with him (cuz otherwise you would have to use odin to flash, or odin mobile from phone but if ure phone doesnt work, u cant) he can still fix things thru recovery.
Other things recoveries are for is making NANDROID BACKUPS. basically an almost total backup of your phone data: it backups rom, kernel , apps and their data, modem, system cache a bunch of technical stuff.
It doesnt backup other files of course (such as music on ur phone or videos or documents) just what is necessary to make the phone run with ur apps.
The reason this backup is important is because if you f*** up your phone real bad (again, phone can be tricky to hande) you can just flash it clean (you internal phone storage, such as music or any folder which doesnt concern rom, or microsd stuff, wont be touched when you choose "factory reset" in custom recovery)
And restore from a backup when your phone was working. Then u reboot and voila, a trip back into the past!
Might i suggest you also backup the efs folder which is found in the root directory. Nandroids DO NOT cover that. And basically for an s3, if you've got root and internal components are not damaged, if youve got the efs you can fix anything....if ya dont - not so much.
Might suggest once more that IF YOU DONT CARE about all this 'faster roms' kernels and mumbo jumbo root stuff, you still flash a recovery: the most stable one is CWM (clockworkmod recovery). To get it just boot into ur rooted phone, install free app from store "rom manager" and install latest version of recovery. you can boot into phone recovery at ANY GIVEN TIME, just follow instructions u can find on google, pressing buttons at same time and ****.
If ure curious, other recoveries exist:
Clockworkmod touch(premium):it's basically cwm just that it's touch. If you want my point of view...having touch on recovery is stupid and useless...recoveries are for fixin or doing important stuff, you dont wanna mess everything up cuz u touched the screen for mistake. Much better to use buttons and be sure.
Twrp...whatever cant remember da name: same thing as cwm touch, only .......i dunno but cwm is better.
Philz Touch(now this is the real ****!):not stable as cwm. It's a mod of cwm with MANY added cool features such as aroma file browser within the rom and look changing and of course touch( all toucb/double tap touch/touch only for scrolling) but the BEST option is BACKUP COMPRESSION. This little guy made me earn 1gb of free-er space out of my nandroid backups i perform onto my microsd. I went fron 3.5gigs to 2.5gigs. Awesome! Plus you can skip md5 checksum...which is a safety thing of course...but it slows down the backup/restore process, for the most daring disabling it spares them some waiting (nandroids are faster than kies from the pc anyways, no more than 20mins guaranteed!).
If ure interested about kernels i suggest:
Siyah kernel (or syiah...never know which)
Perseus kernel.
They both are good and fast, syiah is more performance, but you can get just the same performance on perseus if you handle the tweaking well and yiu get more battery time.
If youre interested about roms:
Foxhound (most complete one for the s3 i believe, it's packing all you need, and of course it's faster than stock samsung rom)
Rootbox(light rom. Its got less features but still fully packed for speed)
Omega (never tried it. Still have to...but it looks like in this rom look-costumization of look is the easiest thing to do. But i believe foxhound to be fully customizable as well...)

I totally agree with your point of view but I've been using PhilZ Touch for about a few months now, flashing stuff, making backups and having fun about 1 time per day. Don't call this masterpiece "unstable" because it's based on latest CWM and without any "unstable" thing . I haven't got any problem with that recovery since 4.01 or so.

Impossible, much less than a month ago there was a versione of the recovery (4.8.8.1 i think) in which it did not save any of the recovery settings i had changed, cuz when i rebooted into recovery for backup/restore stuff i had to keep reenabling some features (like max compression, save to excard ecc ecc). Then there was an update (and they changed selection menu to [x] kinda like thing, if u boot into it now u see md5 checksum if enabled has an x) and the recovery rememberes all settings now (all interface tweaks amd stuff).
that's what i meant for unstable, also cuz rom manager doesnt recognize updated version of clockwork...but thats another story.

Impossible, Phil would include it in his changelog . Also I know what you're talking about, it happens when there isn't a folder clockworkmod on /sdcard , sometimes you need to create it manualy but how often do you format /sdcard anyway? Recovery restores it after reboot anyway.
Also autoupdate from one point of view is a nice feature, I totally agree with that but on the other hand it would require many more things included in the recovery because itself it doesn't support many options, that's why it's called recovery, not a software . Personally I prefer having an option to choose, newer version isn't always better, usually yes, but not always . Also recovery just need to "work", flash roms, make backups and eventually some simple other tasks. I don't need anything else .

Root using auto root, then use mobile Odin to flash recovery.img
Or
Root with cf root then just flash Phil's with the cwm recovery that comes with cf root

Doesnt really matter how u root as pong as u do. Once u do run rom manager and update clockworkmod (cuz if u rooted the otherway cwm is probab uoutdated).
If u chose philz just google philz and find the thread (gonna be first on google, if not google philz recovery)
Read the thread well and find i9300 version (best if u choose .zip version flashable with cwm, if not u gotta use tar.gz flashable thru odin) then put it on phone and in recovery flash dat pakage. Then reboot recovery and make sure u configure philz to your liking.
no philz is not included in rom manager.
Rom manager is a weird name, since it's only of use to update to the latest version of cwm, or install it if you still have stock. Thou it does have a list where u can download roms...i dont recommend it cuz it suks..much better for this is goo manager.
But i prefer googling the rom or recovery (if cwm, i would use the app of course) or whatever and downloaing it from source, much safer and has full instructions (needed for some stuff, for example if a rom needs latest gapps cuz not included, apps like rom manager would not tell ya).

Yeah, I don't recommend tools like Rom Manager as well. It's not bad of course but some kind of useless, in my honest opinion at least.
P.S. Like I said if you're going to change rom then you don't need ANY CF-Root, just flash PhilZ (or clean CWM) through odin then flash any pre-rooted rom. CF-Root isn't required here, only if you're not going to change rom, then use cf-autoroot.
Hi All... help...
I have a Note3 SM-N9005 which is rooted. I have been trying to get CWM installed.
I started by using ROM Manager and this just didnt work at all - the recovery partition stayed stock.
So I downloaded the Samsung Note 3 (International) recovery image (6.0.4.6) (non-touch) from https://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager.
I used Cygwin to convert to a .tar file and then flashed to PDA using Odin.
All looked OK and Odin passed the install - however when I tried to reboot into recovery my Note3 just gets stuck in a boot loop - the only way I could get it working again was to re-flash using Odin and when it reboots it starts and works normally - but if I reboot into recovery mode it just keeps re-booting!!
Any thoughts on how to fix this or whether the best option is to flash a whole ROM with CWM already packed? Alternatively - any ideas on where I can get a CWM file which will work on my Note3?
Also - now this has started getting messy, any advice on backing up EFS (just in case )

So you reflashed the whole stock firmware via Odin and recovery still isn't working? Very strange. Rom Manager sucks and has for years now. Why didn't you just grab either CWM or TWRP (which I find way better for most phones) from the subforum for your phone here on Xda?

Thanks - TBH I have only just replaced my S4 with the Note3 and just set everything up - so didnt want to reflash with a custom ROM so followed the instructions for installing CWM... and failed I did install TWRP a while ago and couldnt really get on with it - if you think it is better I might reflash the whole phone with a new ROM and give it a go.
I think I did download a CWM img file from here and when I flashed it to PDA the phone wouldnt boot at all - from memory I am sure it came up saying it couldnt boot and enetered "Odin mode"... I will have to back up my important stuff and try again tonight.
Any recommendations on a good ROM to play with? Need a stable product ideally as I dont get much time to play

I would just restore the entire phone with the stock firmware file and start fresh. TWRP here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2494245 As far as roms, I haven't played with the international Note 3 in awhile, but I typically recommend stock based roms for less potential issues (I personally prefer CM based roms, but I have more time and experience with dealing with possible problems than most). As always, you should read through some of the stuff other active users are saying about it to make sure it fits your needs, but those development teams support a lot of Samsung devices and usually provide solid updates.

Thanks es0tericcha0s - I downloaded the TWRP tar and flashed to PDA - all worked first time... I will give it a go and see how I get on, when I get more time I will do a clean flash too!
