[Q] OTG - isn't external usb flash drive faster than micro sd class 10/extreme? - Galaxy S6 Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
It seems a lot of people go for micro sd cards (such as class 10) for additional external memory with otg adapters
but I thought usb 3 is much faster and cheaper?
can someone clear this up as I could not find the answer .
anyone know which offers the best speed for saving pictures onto it and playing a couple of emulator games from?

The problem is that the samsung is using usb 2.0 which means the maximum speed that you will achive is about 25-28(MB/s <-correct me if I ma not). If you writing using computer that has a usb3 you will see the avantage of faster speed otherwise there is not. Futhermore good qulity pen drive are faster than a sd-cards class 10 becasue it this type of card only provide 10mbps speed for writing which is good for most part unless you playing 4k video. I would suggest going for UHS 3 type of cards which will saturate usb2.0. that is 30MB/s. Any faster sd cards will be cap by the usb controler. Futhermore memory cards are smaller, ligher and more reliable as a storage because you can easly damage flash drive whereas the otg will cost you couple of bugs.

Thank you for clearing that up, I could not find the complete answer in one single post so hopefully that will help others. You have a good point about safer storage as well.
A very cost effective 128GB UHS 3 card is something like the Transcend 128GB Ultimate SDXC UHS Ultra High Speed Class 3 Memory Card (SD and not micro SD
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Transcend-1...S-3+Flash+Memory+Card+95/60+MB/s+(TS128GSDU3)
The Micro SD versions are a bit too pricey so I might opt for a UHS1 instead
I am leaning towards micro SD in case I upgrade to a compatible phone, thus not need an otg adapter (note 5 or even the lg g4 pro which looks very promising indeed)
In light of what you said I am not considering the usb flash drive anymore so thank you for help and clearing things up
Many Thanks :good:
PS So With the next generation usb C, we get faster transfers with the next generation of memory cards or even existing ones we buy today? I'm wondering if it is worth holding on before buying.

Everyone buy this you be good

I'm def getting one of 'em!
I couldn't go back to 1 measly gig now
With CardExport your Pocket PC serves as a card reader for your card. no need for that.
What if you want to transfer data between somene elses pc and you don't have the cradle???
I deal for backup on the go!
I use a usb/qtek cable. I allways carry it with my, for file transfer and charger porposes.
For those other cases I'm without cable, I have a 5 dolar pendisk much cheaper! I still get to keep my 1Gb super-cheap plain SDcard on my qtek
Neil - I got the SD ultra II 2 gig card - why would the 1 gig be the ultimate? :?

Hi,
I'm new to this sd card stuff, but is there really any point buying a really fast card for the BA?
What would be the difference in everyday use between and normal SD card and one thats rated x133(or even x150) in speed?
Would I get the 15-20meg a xfer rate through my BA?? or would i have to use a decicated Hi-Speed USB 2 card reader?
I'm looking to buy an SD card so that I use my BA for a Sat Nav system.
BTW you can pickup a 1GB Sandisk Ultra II card on ebay for about £30, would this be big enough for the maps for Sat Nav??
Thanks
satpal
:?
Re: card for sat-nav.
I am no expert, but from my experience, the faster the card the better, and there is plenty of discussion on this site regarding the size of cards. From others experience, it appears that as the card gets bigger, the stability is reduced, therefore, a higher speed card is needed.
Regarding what size is needed, I used a 128meg card for 2 years with tomtom, I now have a 256meg with plenty of spare storage. Given curent prices, I have just ordered a 1gig fast card. I will update if it falls over!!
2GB SD card
With the prices of larger cards dropping dramatically, I'm looking to upgrade my 1Gb card to 2Gb.
I'm assuming that it will work ok on this device??
Any thoughts or anyone already tried with success?
normally there may not be much of an issue, but surely for one that plugs into the USB port it is acheiving the fastest possible rate.
The PDA xfer rate might not be as fast as it can be via the cradle, but with the SD plugged into a USB slot I would imagine you could transfer stuff over quicker.

Which SD card?

Does it support Sandisk Ultra II, or SDHC and is that faster than class 6?
edit: is this okay?
http://www.play.com/Electronics/Ele...com-8GB-SDHC-Class-6-Memory-Card/Product.html
SDHC refers to an extension to the basic SD specification, allowing higher capacities. Hero supports SDHC upto at least 32GB, going on what I've read. I have an 8GB class 6 card.
Ultra xxx this & that is marketing bull with no standardised meaning in respect of performance. From what I can find via google, the Sandisk Ultra II is either class 2 or 4 (or possibly either depending on exactly which card you have).
The class system is a standardised classification of read/write speeds. Always check a card's class.
Is that card (Sandisk) ok? Depends what you want it for. If you intend to install apps to your card via, say, A2SD, I'd say no. Always get a class 6 for this, but it's a matter of personal choice. The standard doesn't imply this but collective empirical evidence also suggests higher class cards tend to be more reliable.
As to the linked card on play.com, it looks ok. Even the reviews seem reasonable, as long as you aren't inflicted with a broken lock tab a few earlier customers report.
TBH as long as you stick with 8GB class 6, as of the current date, you're at the sweet point for capacity-&-performance : price ratio. I bought one recently - think it was Transcend & about the same price.
OK, I think I'll buy that then. The only reason I want it is because at the moment videos always lag on my 2GB class 2 that came with it.
Thanks.
Micro SDHC
HTC Hero supports Micro SD HC and not the standard SD card. So check that before you buy. Im using Transcend 8GB Micro SDHC Class 6 Ultra. Works like breeze.. Also check 16 GB ones coz the price must hv come down.
Oh, so sorry - I didn't notice the card he linked to was not a Micro SD
Hell, that's the second time I've done that - I actually ordered the wrong size on one occasion. I hope this doesn't cost the OP. Even if ordered, they should take a return within 7 days, by law (in the UK, at any rate).
[Edit:] This is an ok deal.
As long as the micro as is class 4 or better then you should be ok with what ever you buy but give eBay a miss a lot of faked memory card and memory stick sizes comming from places like China and the like

Hahahaha. Thats too funny. Lets just hope he doesn't tear it open as soon as its delivered, no chance of a return then.
Anyway,... I found two good prices,...
Samsung 8GB Micro SD Memory Card - £13.49
Its only a class 4, but speeds in the comments are ok:
Speed (read) 15MB/sec
Speed (write) 6 ~ 7MB/sec
And doesn't this sound interesting,... "Features:- Waterproof - Innovative epoxy moulding compound tech helps over 24 hours in sea water- Shock proof - Survives high pressure, including the crush of a 1.6ton automobile- Magnet-proof - Resists over 13 times the magnetic force of home theater speakers- Elegant Package- Content Protection- Faster Performance"
The 2nd one is what CAULI had found, only slightly cheaper,...
Transcend 8 GB Class 6 microSDHC Flash Memory Card with adapter - £13.99
One customer states "I was getting write speeds of over 6MB I think the fastest was something like 6.70MB per second!"
BUT
Another says "Write speed with this card is the slowest of the lot, barely creeping above 5.3MB/sec"
Hmmmmm,....
Any more advice anyone?
I recently purchased the Samsung 8GB Micro SD class 6 Memory Card from play.com for use in my Hero and it works great with Apps2SD
Thanks for the tips everyone
There's always ebay... I got my 8gb on there for £6 inc. p+p, you can never beat an ebay deal...

Storage Idea

It got me thinking, as people have questioned about the lack of USB port for the simple convenience of popping in a USB memory stick for the ad hoc transfer of data.. that getting one of these alongside the microSD cards they're invariably going to buy, would solve the problem nicely..
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-US...34?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1302631442&sr=1-34
Or
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bytestor-Mi...38?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1302631781&sr=1-38
..for example
Small enough to have on you or keep handy in an emergency..
If you search Amazon for :
Transcend 16 GB microSDHC Class 2 Flash Memory Card with USB Card Reader
you'll see what I think is going to be my solution. seems quite easy at that point.
Cheers,
gpearson1968
cool..think I'd want a faster card though..
They're not micro SD, but you could look at trying one of the EyeFi wireless SD cards
tbh this was a concern for me at first but its not really a issue transfering dataf rom my PC to my pad via wireless a or the USB cable
Put my idea into practise... and can report that all is working great so far (fingers crossed)... see the following post I made in the MicroSD card thread for more info and links if you wanna purchase the bits from Amazon

I can report here that this solution is EXCELLENT for the folks here in North America. I also agree that the slot on the t-former to put it into is quite fiddly. I needed a pair of tweezers to get it all the way in and for the springs to lock it in place.
Cheers,

64Gb Micro SD card

Does anybody know if the Tab 7.7 can use a 64Gb Micro SD card?
Probably not. Most Android tablets only go up to 32GB

Yep, same here. Stupid FAT32 doesn't let you copy files bigger than 4Gb though, so that sucks. Now if only there were some way to format the SD card using EXT2,3,4 or whatever, or get the Tab to easily recognize exFAT.
I did notice when i tried to copy a file from the internal memory to the external memory
It didnt work while i was unrooted. But since i have rooted i have not experienced this again..

I use 64 GB card and no problem.
Most manufactures says their devices is supporting microSD up to 32 GB, but really it's just a phrase.
I've tried 65GB microSD on my Galaxy S II and it worked then I tried it on my Galaxy S I also worked !! which made me try it on little Sony Xperia mini and also worked !!!
Just try it, Im sure it will work.
Yep no problems over here either.. Just need to format the card when it's in the device..

I have 64Gb Kingmax MicroSDXC. Works fine.
Confirmed a while ago:
http://www.androidnz.net/2011/09/sandisk-64gb-micro-sdxc-cards-confirmed.html
My 64GB card has worked in every Android device I've tried it in, check that blog post for my list - also confirmed working in many other devices by others.
looking to maybe getting a micro sd card, not sure if i should go for the 32gb with price range of $30-$70 or fork out the extra money for 64gb, over $150. what would you guys recomend? and is it even worth it going for the 64gb at this point? i have the 16gb tab and using 16gb from original 7" tab.
Well.. currently the cheapest one i could find was at play.com and that's not cheap at all... can't we use the usb adapter and connect an external HD to the device?
I went ahead and bought the 64gb card ($152USD on Amazon) as I like to keep as much as possible on my tab. As far as a usb hard drive, I would think it would need to be on that does not need to be powered through the usb connection.
it works just fine, i have 64GB almost used up on my SGS2
In terms of whether the 64GB is worth it: only you can answer that. Mine is basically full and I would like even more storage, some people can't even fill an 8GB card, so it's quite a personalised thing really.
You can use pen drives via the USB adapter if that suits your use.
It seems from other posts that 64Gb cards are entirely satisfactory but my additional question is "What class is optimal?" There are Class 4, Class 6 and now Class 10 cards with price generally higher for the higher class. I note that another poster has successfully used a Kingmax 64Gb MicroSDXC which, I believe, is Class 6.
Does anybody know what the specs are for the MicroSD slot on the tablet. Obviously, it would be overkill and a waste of money if the device cannot read and write at the higher speeds that the card supports. Has anyone done any benchmarking?
I was considering a 64Gb Class 10 card for AU$125 but am wondering if the tablet can actually make use of it and a cheaper card would suffice.
the Sandisk 64 is a Class 6
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1343164
I think when it comes to the difference in class, the simple explanation is the random access speed vs sustained data transfer speed.
Correct my current understanding if I'm wrong, but generally speaking, lower class = faster random access speeds, but slower sustained data read/write, whereas higher class = faster sustained read/write speeds, but slower random access.
Can anyone confirm or expand upon this?
that's why a Class 6 is just the sweet spot right smack in the middle of both
yeah Class 10 are faster to transfer huge files but slower on smaller files
and class 2 to class 4 are faster for smaller files but extremely slow for huge files like a 4 GB movie file for example

Sandisk "Ultra" 64gb SDXC (micro SD) card, Class 10, UHS-1

FYI... Sandisk is now selling an "Ultra" 64gb SDXC (micro SD) card that is rated Class 10 and is UHS 1. The "Ultra" tag refers to their class of cards that have 30MB/second read speed (unk. what the write speed is). Sandisk also has an "Extreme Pro" class of cards that have 95MB/second read speed, but the largest "Extreme Pro" in micro SDXC is currently 16gb. If you shop hard, you can find the 64gb "Ultra" SDXC card for less than $60 currently.
It's been previously reported that Razr supports SDXC cards, including 64gb (see this thread).
For anyone who might buy one, a word of caution. Put it in your Razr and format it there first before trying to use it on your PC. I'm not sure whether I received a defective card, or I somehow ruined my card by trying to format it to FAT32 on a Windows machine (using Paragon Partition Manager). I spent hours screwing with it before giving up and returning it to the seller.
I have the same 32gb version in my razr right now and it runs great. I assume the 64gb one wouldn't be any different.
Got mine for $23 on Amazon. Couldn't pass it up for that price.

I just picked up one of these as well. Quick question, I have the option to use either a internal SD card slot (Macbook pro) or a USB adapter (MicroSD --> USB dongle). Which one will provide faster transfer rates?
I would love one of these. Just too much for me right now.

It depends...
Is your USB adapter USB 2.0?
I typically use the SD Card slot with the adapter provided with the micro SD card.
USB for transfer unless you have a good adapter can be slower.
I use one 32gb class 10, works fine.

Have you tried a HD 1080p recording on your 32gb class 10 card ? , if yes - did you find any difference when you tried the same recording on a class 4 ( assuming 30 fps and standard cache)?
Got my one for a few weeks, phone has never been so slow.
Not faulty (tested the card multiple times) - anyone else having issues? I feel like I have a Galaxy S1. Just weird behaviour - Swype takes forever for k/b to appear, winamp takes forever for thumbnails for albums to appear - just apalling performance from my phone.

I couldn't mount it or format it. My RAZR kept saying it was damaged. So, I formatted it in my PC first and all is well.
If you're under Windows XP, you'll need to have a program to do this. I used EaseUS Partition Master which you can get for free at http://download.cnet.com/EaseUS-Partition-Master-Home-Edition/3000-2248_4-10863346.html.
So far, the card works great and it's nice to have more room for DLC and songs.
I own this card.
It was a pain in the ass to format, but once I formatted it a few times, it worked great.
64gb picked up for like 70$ shipped from ebay. All my Community, Walking Dead and music and SO much more. Couldnt be happier
I just orderd sandisk ultra 16gb and I will probably recieve it next week. I have atm 8gb class 4 card and I want to move all of my stuff from my 8gb card to my 16gb, what is the best way to do it?
Also do I need to do anything before I use it on my phone? Do I need to format it in my PC?

You can simply put it in the phone. No need to do anything beforehand. If it requires you to format, the phone will tell you to do so.
I've given up completely on trying to get this to work in my phone. The phone will recognize it as 64GB, but will freeze up on numerous occasions even if I'm not accessing it. Does no one else have the freezing issue? Running Flick 5.0 Tornado
So what's the concensus on this "extreme" cards' performance while in the phone? Are backups faster? Transferring files to/from a dekstop while connected via USB faster?
