Not able to flash TWRP or any Gapps - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I am on 4.4.4 and used TWRP in past, now I am on Philz Touch latest recovery.
I first cleaned data and system and tried to flash a different rom, it flashed fine but when I tried to flash 4.4.4 Gapps recovery restarted and it kept restarting if I tried to flash that Gapps so I cleaned again and only flashed the Rom this time, rebooted and my system restarted to recovery.
I manually tried to format all partitions but got
"E:format_volume: make_ext4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p10
E:Error formatting /preload!"
while formatting preload partition.
I google about this and search in xda too and found few threads suggesting to format /preload partition using TWRP recovery so I tried to flash TWRP but it stuck on it's flash screen. I tried to flash old version using Odin as well as new one but it keeps hanging on the it's flash screen. Flashing Philz via odin works every time but not TWRP.
So it looks like I am not able to format /preload partition, I am not able to flash any rom or gapps and not able to flash any version of TWRP recovery.
I am able to take a backup of my phone and restore it without any problem including my internal sd card using Philz Touch though just for the info.
So any suggestions friends?
Thanks.
Edit:
Flashing normal cwm and flashing TWRP after removing TWRP folder from internal memory helped to boot into TWRP. Also I was able to format /preload using normal CWM recovery however flashing anything using any recovery whether it's TWRP or Philz Touch simply boot my phone back into recovery itself and nothing works.
Even a clean flash doesn't work and flashing only a simply rom file will not work and boot my phone directly into recovery so it looks like my memory is corrupted or something similar.
I would appreciate any kind of suggestions related to my problem. Thanks.

Update :
Thankfully it was only my memory card which got corrupted and thus corrupted my rom files too so changing those files fixed my issue..

Can't seem to successfully flash with CWM anymore?!

I was running the latest CM7 nightly for a while (release 116). I decided to give CM9 a try. I wanted to go back to CM7 so I tried flashing back but something went wrong. I had backup so I tried restoring that in CWM but it gave me a checksum error.
So I tried out the vanilla ICS 4.0.3 (KP8) build using odin. Used it for a bit and then decided to go back to CM7. I flashed to my original OS using ODIN, rooted the phone. Now, whenever I try to flash anything in CWM, it installs but then just goes into a endless boot sequences. Tried flashing MIUI and CM7 with no luck.
I'm on a rooted KI3 release atm.
How can I completely wipe my phone? I've reformatted my external and usb storage with no luck.

Clean Slate for those that balls up the firmware .Or need to return to service or decide if its hardware/firmware problem .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card .
Remove battery
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct stock firmware .
Root with same CWM as backup .
Boot recovery restore backup .
jje
Thanks! Following the processes. Wasn't able to unmount SD card to format it but /data /system and /cache formatted fine. *crosses fingers*
going to use a freshly downloaded copy of CM7 nightly too incase my old zip got corrupted somehow.
I can install my stock firmware and root it with odin.
But, once I try to install Rom Manager and update CWM recovery things start going wrong. It reboots into the regular android recovery console and fails to install the update.
But, if I battery pull and boot into recovery it boots into CWM recovery 4.0.0.5. I can apply the update.zip ROM manager downloaded. But, then when I try to flash anything it doesn't install properly and I get stuck in an endless boot loop. Can't even boot into recovery. Have to start all over again with ODIN.
Rom Manager is causing you grief.
Had a similar thing happen a while back. I wouldn't use it at all if I were you and stick to using CW Recovery. I don't know the why/how/wherefore, I just know that time I tried to use it, it broke recovery & put me in a bootloop same as you.

[Q] Issues after switching to cwm from twrp

Been using twrp since rooting note II. I wanted to try out 4.4 PA but they said to only use cwm. It was late so I decided to be lazy and since I used to use rom manager all the time I installed it to flash cwm recovery then booted into recovery to install touch version. It wasn't showing the touch version so selected to restart to check to see where I saved it to it would not boot past the first "note II" splash screen. Battery pull then back into recovery and went ahead and flashed PA 4.4 and now it will get past the splash screen then shows boot animation but then starts all over.
Is this a rom manager issue?
can I flash twrp from within cwm recovery?
will I have to basically reroot it?
Any suggestions on how to get back to twrp and to a usable phone?
thanks
If you download a .zip of twrp and flash it you will have twrp for your recovery.
As long as you flash a rooted rom, you will be rooted.
Not sure what happened with the boot loop, did you by chance wipe the system without flashing another before booting?

Nope did my standard wipe cache, wipe dalvik, and factory reset then flashed rom then gapps. Going to go back to twrp and wait for 4.4 to be more stable before I try it out again and maybe then I can use twrp to flash it.
thanks for the help

Have you wiped data at all? You need to wipe data / factory reset when switching roms, and it sounds like you havent.

As stated above, on both cwm and twrp I wiped caches and did factory reset and still having the issues. Once back on twrp I even formatted internal memory thinking maybe rom manager messed something up on it and still can't get passed the splash screen.

Copy a ROM to your SD card (external not internal)
Install cwm and format data (actually full format, where /data/media gets wiped) and system
Install rom
Reboot
TWRP has some issues randomly with corrupting /data, that's why I no longer use it.

Finally got it. Thought using odin to flash back to root 66 and start fresh would work but after that it was still going to the splash screen then black and a battery pull had to be done. TWRP back ups would fail when trying to restore, so I reverted back to an older version of twrp and it finally let a back up be installed and it booted up just fine!!
thanks for all the suggestions
Im having a similar problem to yours, I am using twrp and flashed PA 3.99 the phone works great, but if my battery dies or i restart the phone or shut it down it automatically wont get passed the samsung logo, or sometimes the PA logo, the only work arounds ive seen to it is to wipe the cache and dalvik to boot, but when that fails i have to install the whole rom over again. any ideas?

Hard bricked S3

I tried installing back to noot v9 without back-uping on my s3 using clockworkmod and it gave me error status 7. I tried repairing it using odin and this rom stockroms(dot)net/file/GalaxyS3/i9300/stockrecovery/International-GT-i9300-StockRecovery.tar. Odin sais that everithing went ok and shows that big green pass icon, but everithing it did was to delete even the cwmr everything that remained being android system recovery. Also, it can't mount my sd card (I tried formating it as NTSF and FAT32).
PS: I don't know if my phone is original.
flash latest twrp
No. To be sure, that everything works, exec factory reset in samsung-recovery and reboot.
he have cwm, he should flash latest (cwm end suporrt in 2014 )
only twrp, that rom work for me
Android system recovery isn't CWM. CWM or TWRP aren't ROMs. Read&understand 1st.
read again rp158
he use default recorvery for repartition,
bisoros
check checksum rom.zip and flash custom recovery again, full wipe and try again

Unable to install TWRP Recovery heimdall and therefore lineageos

Hi,
I'm using a galaxy s2 gt-i9100 as a spare phone and i thought it would be a good idea to upgrade from CM13.1 to lineage os 14...
Unfortunately that didn"t go well, the phone is not bricked BUT :
1)i can only flash recovery using odin, heimdall says flash ok but recovery never changes, same as when i tried to install the TWRP recovery from a zip file in the CWM 6.0.2.9 recovery
2) flashing from that CWM version a lineage os zip file always resulted in the progress bar to be stuck at the very begining of the process so i updated the phone with a 3GB PIT file to fix the issue.
3) now the same CWM doesn"t want to mount the SD card while it's working perfectly from within the phone or with the phone(using latest stock firmware) on my PC
4) i can"t use that CWM as recovery because i can't use adb sideload or install zip from a file anymore(i guess due to the 3GB PIT file)
So is it possible to have a TWRP recovery flashable with odin for the GT-I9100 ?
Will that TWRP recovery finally allow me to flash the lineage os zip file?
thanks,

First--you can't mount sdcard after repit if you didn't format it
Second--repit using 3GB PIT is useless procedure, because you only changed the data partition size, instead repit with a 1GB_3GB.pit to change system partition to 1GB.
Third--to get TWRP 3 you must be on a rom with a kernel that supports isorec recovery, so you should flash a CWM kitkat compatible recovery through Odin and reboot to recovery and flash latest CM11 to get isorec support then reboot to recovery flash TWRP 3.0.2.1 image and then reboot recovery and flash your desired nogut rom and gapps.

Hello,
thanks for your reply, it was exactly what i was looking for, i wish my Google searches about that matter redirected me to that tutorial.
IT worked brilliantly exept an error regarding formating and mounting of data partition after the use of the PIT file but upon restart, the procedure : 'Go to Wipe -> Advanced wipe,
select Dalvik, Cache, System, System, Data, Internal Storage then Swipe to Wipe, go back to TWRP Home.' completed without any errors.
That old phone is now running nougat.

Hi,
I wanted to upgrade my i9100 so i used odin 3.04 to flash the kitkat compatible .tar file you mentioned through download mode. The flashing in odin showed no errors but my phone is dead now and doesnt turn on!
Now i can only get into download mode using the key combinations.
What did i do wrong coming from CM9.1 with cwm 6.0.1.2 on it. And how to fix this?

Your phone won't boot of course, because the kernel recovery you flashed is a kitkat kernel recovery, just reflash it again with a pit with 1GB system or more and your desired data partition size, all pits are available in repartition guide by saber, after you enter into recovery, you should navigate to mount then "format sdcard" or "format internal sdcard", i don't actually remember the option, then format it and format data and system and cache and dalvik cache, then install the latest cm11 rom to get isorec support, then let it reboot, then reboot to recovery and flash TWRP 3.0.2-1 image from the TWRP 3 thread's download section, then reboot recovery and flash your desired nogut rom and gapps
Just a sec i will give you some links..
Much appreciated. I am really stuck right now.
Can i conclude that when i flash CWM 6.0.1.2 my CM9.1 will be alive and kicking?
I think i want that right now, i postpone the upgrade to the future. Not really comfy right now....
hmmm i can't find the link to CWM 6.0.1.2 for i9100. Thats what i need right now...

you have to flash a kernel not just a recovery, try dirty flashing your cm9.1 again that should make it boot correctly, and will replace the current recovery with the recovery that comes with the rom
I found my cm9.1. How does dirty flashing works? Can it be done with odin?
Does this erase all my data on my device?
edit:
Do i choose pda or phone when entering cm9.1 in odin. And where to select wipe cache and dalvik cache?
CM11
1.5GB PIT Files or 1GB PIT Files by ELgmal 1GB is enough.
Kitkat compatible recovery
this is for future update

no just flash it in recovery and wipe cache and dalvik, if you had xposed then flash xposed after the rom and wipe dalvik and cache and reboot.
ps: next time you post, please quote my post or mention me in your post so i can reply faster to your post
no it won't delete any data

DON'T USE ODIN, the rom is zip flash it through recovery
The problem is i can't access the data partition in windows explorer so i can not place the cm 9.1 zip file on my device. I can enter the recovery mode though

have you tried with an external sdcard?
you can use an adapter to connect your external sdcard to your pc and copy your rom to
That worked fine. My device is up and running.
Many thanks for your help!

Is EMMC of my phone corrupted or not?

I am using Spice Dream UNO(Android One).
Bootloader: Unlocked
ROM: Marshmallow Stock ROM
Rooted: Yes
Recovery: TWRP
My phone suddenly started giving continuous Force closes so I restarted it and got stuck in a bootloop. Trying to Wipe any partitions failed with Error 1 and I was unable to copy or write to any partition from TWRP file manager. Nandroid backup and restore failed too.
So, I tried to flash Stock Lollipop ROM using SP Flash Tools and it flashed successfully but now all partitions show 0 MB size except Boot, IMEI and Recovery partitions.
Flashing ROM or restoring backup using TWRP still fails. Changing partition format, wiping, formatting fails too. Manual flashing using fastboot shows success but partition sizes still stay at 0MB. I have tried everything but I am not able to restore the partitions back to normal.
I haven't used the format feature of SP flash tools.
Now starting TWRP or fastboot turns the phone off and I am not able to access them.
Is EMMC of this phone corrupted or not? Can it be fixed?
Anyone? It's urgent.
Please, anybody? I need this phone right now.
