[Q] How to set correctly my kernel ? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, so here's my situation.
I'm on a Galaxy S4 Mini, running Lollipop 5.1. Everything was fine with my kernel, until i finally discover that it was acting weird..
I was usually setting the governor as conservative, with a maximum frequency of 1350mhz. The problem is that it is effective for the core n°1, but the core n°2 randomly gets online and jump all the way at higher speeds than the limit I've set. Usually 1400 up to 1700mhz. Which makes my phone running hot and draining fast..
I tried to change the hotplug settings to make only core N°1 online, but when I do that, the core runs at 100% (1350mhz which is the limit I've set) all the time.
The only solution I've found ATM to not drain my battery is to set the governor to powersave and locking it to 700mhz.. But it's a crappy solution since the frequency stays at the same state all the time with that governor.
Do you have any idea on why this problem is occurring ? Thanks

CPU Temp

Is there an app to view the Real CPU temp on the Note, and not from the batt sensor? I contacted System Tuner devs to find out why the their app does not show CPU temp, and here is the response.
" This means the CPU temperature is* not available on your phone or it's notsupported by the app. Note however that many* apps on Market pretends toprovide CPU temperature while they only provide battery temperature! If you want to check if your phone has such information available, you cansearch the content of the /sys folders and all its subfolders for a filecontaining 'temp' in its name. Note you should use an automated tool forthat, such as EStrong File Explorer."

Try Temp+CPU app. I have pro version, and this allows me set update interval to as low as 1 second.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot.

I tried the above app, and still no CPU temp reading. I do get batt temp reading(on every app I've tried). I have been reading and come to find out the Note may not have the CPU temp sensor. Can anyone confirm?

It works perfectly on mine. Its a widget though. Configure it to show reading too, in F or C, whatever you want.
Yes I tried and it shows a static -1c on mine. I wonder if it's kernel related? I read up on the issue and some say it needs to be activated at the kernel level or that the CPU temp diode is just not there.
I'm going to flash a stock kernel and test.

For me, it worked on stock, on Saurom, and on the latest Solaris prime, with all the kernels they bundled in.
I hope it's not a hardware issue with my note. I'm going to flash a different ROM, and test again.

Ok to test out I just bought the Temp+CPU app on my Infuse as well, and it doesn't show CPU temp either. Both phones show 31°F for CPU temp. Now in widget options when changing both phones to battery temp they work fine.

Galaxy Note CPU temperature
The Galaxy Note doesn't have a CPU temperature sensor.

Iirc both the note and the HP touchpad share similar if not the same processor...and the touchpad also doesn't show the temp. If it gets too hot it will just lock up and reboot. But its never gotten hot w/ overclocking

[Q] cpu use

Every time i use my s3 it runs at 1400mhz almost all time. I haven't flashed any kernel. It is only rooted and i cant figure out what app is forcing cpu run so high. Only app what comes to my mind is touchwiz... (can't upload screenshot of cpu spy, i upload it with computer if needed.)

im sure the cpu would report other frequencies too. if you want to check the high cpu usage install os monitor from market and find the culprit app

Yeah it uses other frequencies too but only sometimes, it uses 1400mhz even when im just scrolling my homescreen but thanks i will try that app if it helps.

so what was the cause of this? did you ever find the reason? I even did a factory reset and still seeing 80+% usage at 1500 (or 1026 when i got power save on) with minimal time in deep sleep.
stock unrooted official JB update

I didn't never find the reason.. but when I changed roms couple times it started to run at lower frequencies. It could be too newer android what solved problem.

For the right answer - use BetterBatteryStats (there is a free XDA-dev build somewhere around)

(Q) No deep sleep when on performance governor

Just wondering if this is normal behavior, I'm running cm10.1 which has the deep sleep fix (ls2_hsic or something like that)
I tried using some of the other governors but I found them all to be choppy , I know the hardware is not the best in this tab due its age but when running performance governor at 1.4 it feels fine .
thanks

I think performance governor runs at max speed all the time, but you should be able to set up a "screen off"-profile, using another governor who allows deepsleep.

Exactly, why would you set to performance at 1.4? Your tab will just burn up. Try interactive/row. Seems to be the best combination for me.

You most likely have a performance option that came with the Custom Rom or are running an app that has System App access , which will over ride a User App. Double check all apps and settings to see if you have any other programs that have system user rights to your CPU, that is most likely what is over taking your desired settings.

Thanks for the quick reply, I'm on the Android Revolution HD 8.0 ROM now, that is probably the reason for this. Can I do something with this?
Sent from my HTC One X+ using xda app-developers app
Open up the app your using to undervolt, these should be an option to restore default values. Once back on default go ahead and open the programs' App info and disable or freeze it. Reboot and run your CPU spy app and see what is taking charge of your voltage. Also possible your voltages are not sticking which has to do with the ROM. Id suggest running profiles for CPU rather then undervolt. I. E. 534 mhz - 1434 mhz when screen on, 348-1012 when screen off. SetCPU is what i use. You have less of a chance of frying the motherboard and doing irreversible damage to your phone internally

Undervolt has to do with lowering the power that goes to the battery. when desired mhz occurs, where as underclocking has to do with specifically CPU processors and with a specified setting (screen off, music app on) occurring. Just to clear up my previous post. Undervolting the battery use to do wonders on phones a few years back because of all around poor battery life on most devices. But nowadays it is pretty pointless.

The only app that seems to work properly with Sense stock kernel is Tegra Overclock.

[Help] NoFrills CPU Control dosen't work

Hi...everyone I am facing an issue with NoFrillsCPU .
Whenever i set clock speed of the cpu on my GT S-I8262 Core duos & then check the current speed..or stats for Last 5 seconds...i always see clock speed more than the speed i have set.
Example. I have set Max - 320 Mhz & Min - 245 Mhz but still when i check the stats current speed shows at about 1209 Mhz..ie at full throttle or sometimes to clock speed more than that i have set.
Plzz help me..what should i do....

Might want to post this in a apk/mod section for no frills, but my guess is that mp decision is over riding your settings. What kernel are you using? Rooted? Custom Rom?
