Rooted my galaxy s4 on 5.01 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I just rooted my galaxy s4 using king root 4.1 holy crap

King root works with 4.4.4 and below.
So does towelroot.
You should not be surprised. We already know this.

I can verify that Kingroot 4.1.0.703 will root a VZW S4 running 5.0.1

Another confirmation that is does work on OTA 5.01. I was on Muniz_ri rooted 5.01 but after I saw this post I flashed the stock OTA with Odin and ran the Kingroot app. It's very simple.
EDIT: I used the process to replace KingUser with SuperSU. That was very easy also.

Hmm, last I checked ,5.0.1 doesn't have root. Then again, no one has used kingroot. I also didn't see 5.0.1. Gotta love mobile.

Verizon S4 with 5.01
I tried previously when I had 4.4.2 loaded and it failed. So I gave up until I read this thread and voila! it worked! just rooted 2 phones using kingroot 4.1.

Well, it looks like The people at Kingroot have managed to root this.

I can confirm as well. I'm on a Verizon S4 Lollipop and Kingroot ver 4.0.703 was able to root my phone without even having to use a PC. The app said my ICH-I545 was unsupported but like everyone says just hit the Root button anyway & it still works!
I dunno if therea any malicious code tho..

I found a site to download Kingroot faster and easier without all the confusing ads. Just be sure to download the latest version. http://androidxda.com/download-kingroot-application

Well it seemed to work for me, but now my phone is stuck in a reboot loop after trying to replace KingRoot with SuperSU. The phone boots, shows the lockscreen and works for about 30 seconds, then whatever app is running closes, then the System UI seems to crash and the phone reboots. Factory reset / safe mode don't seem to help.
I found a factory image and have consilidated the links here, if it helps anyone.

Wow...congrats to all the OTA takers!

The app downloaded a file this morning called "kmPlugins.zip.tmp", 12 hours after I used it to root. Not sure what it is but be cautious.

Yesterday I tried the Kingroot app. I downloaded and installed it over my already-rooted Galaxy S4 ( I had been having wifi / internet connection issues since installing a rooted lollipop). When done, I ran their Purify app. After a few reboots that threw it into a boot loop and a battery pull (which seemed to stop the boot loop and allowed it to boot normally) everything seems to work perfectly and my WiFi/Internet connection is solved... phone is much faster too.
I did notice their purity app automatically kills almost everything running in the background. I use the Automateit app heavily, and it took me a little bit to figure out how to set Purity not to kill certain apps that were running in the background.

If you've rooted with Kingo Hashcode suggests flashing the latest SU.zip in SafeStrap.
Also, I was in no way condoning the use of Kingo root when I mentioned it before. I made a personal decision as this is a dev device for me.
If you did use Kingo or vroot, I highly recommend installing the latest Safestrap, downloading the SuperSU flash .zip from @chainfire's website:
http://download.chainfire.eu/351/SuperSU/
Then reboot, enter safestrap recovery and install the supersu .zip.
This will get rid of the Kingo root version of the apk and su binary.

I updated and just downloaded the Safestrap .apk file from here:
http://d-h.st/zas
Installed it and followed the on-screen prompts.
Flashed the .zip file from here:
http://download.chainfire.eu/351/SuperSU/
And rebooted.
One thing to note was that I couldn't get to my External SD Card from Safestrap, so I had to re-boot again and copy over Super User.zip file onto the Internal Storage to flash it.
Feel a bit better, but still paranoid about ever using Klingo again until it's WIDELY UNANIMOUSLY confirmed that it's not nefarious,...bummer for jumping on the update so soon :-/

Just wish the warning came out before I used it. That's what I get for being too hot to trot regarding that update!
I've seen Kingo mentioned on the forums, so at the time it didn't cross my mind as needing to be concerned about it. Lesson learned. Early adopters [potentially] take it in the pants. Next time, let more people play with it first THEN jump on the bandwagon!
I literally just used kingo about 10 mins ago. I used kies to update and then ran kingo because I couldn't stand not having root on this device. Everything is working fine. Wondering if I need to worry now lol. Anyways I take it safe strap needs to installed on my laptop and then use it to flash to the phone. Anyone have a link to the note 3 version of safestrap? You can download/install Safestrap from the phone, then flash the SU .zip file in recovery mode.

IF, yes if Kingo steals user information it has already happened most likely during the root process. Just to be sure yes install supersu using Safestrap, the will will ensure you don't have someone in the background spying on your phone.

Superuser pro is not a standalone app it is only a permission placed within the superuser app that was (in this case) already provided by kingo and installed during the root process. You need to flash the Super Superuser from Chainfire via safe strap and reboot...this will overwrite the naughty superuser apk that kingo installed.

Yes, during the root process, the Kingo root application downloads the exploits and tries them on the device and then deletes them so that there's nothing left over for people to examine. Kind of ingenious really. Still no excuse for the amount of info their collection (and which could potentially be used for ill).

Rooting can be done using Saferoot and framaroot and others.
But be advised as said previously. . This will not allow you to have a custom recovery like TWRP, Philz or CWM and install custom roms! Unless it has a unlocked bootloader. As of now theres no simple friendly way to do this anymore. Only solution is to have mobiletechvideos downgrade your chip and send it out to them for a service fee. There highly recommended on here for doing this. Hopefully a fix will be released soon as many people are working on this.
Good luck

You got the answers on rooting, I would just add that yes after a period of time of you denying the update it will just do it on its own. In the future root and freeze the update program. In this case SDM 1.0

You can use titanium backup and restore apps. You can also download xposed framework and there are some random mods with that and you can also disable ads with ad blockers. it'll probably be your only method. the Chinese seem to be taking over these root and jailbreak exploits. over on iOS, TaiG is the only group who has a jailbreak for the newest versions of that. and kingroot seems to be getting a similar status for people who want one-click root exploits.
keep in mind, root is a dangerous thing and it seriously harms the security of your device. you may not trust the Chinese, but they've probably been doing this all along.

1. How do we all know this is trustworthy? I have read many things across the net. Some good and some bad.
2. If it is trustworthy why is there not an English translation? There may be one but I have yet to find ot.

I have just re-rooted using kingroot, but had to use the desktop v3.0, and yes it is all in Chinese. I don't speak Chinese so it was definitely a trial and error process. As soon as you root you run an app called supersume to remove the kingroot files and superuser(kinguser) and it installs chainfire's supersu. I'm glad I have root access again.

Can someone tell me if I can root it or not? Towelroot and Kingroot do not work for it. I'm guessing that's because the software is still too new. So, might it just be that there is no root for it yet?
If so, is there anyway I can get rid of the bloatware (it's so frustrating!)?
Thank you in advance!

supposedly this thing SRS ROOT can do it but it can't root mines. Though, the computer reads out that it does.

Yep, use kingroot.
I found that last night that KINGO ROOT is working on sch-i545 build VRUGOF1.
Link for future reference. The old method is better imo. Root is possible with kingroot but didn't work when i swithed to supersu
You have to use kingroot to grant a terminal su permission, then uninstall kingroot, and lastly install SuperSU via the terminal. Google it for a more in-depth walkthrough. I did it in 5 minutes sitting in my car. SuperSU is better, and it plays nice with more apps. Good luck! Message me if you need a link.

My question though is what recovery works with this variant? I'm a TWRP guy myself but it doesn't sound like flashing TWRP via Odin will work with this Verizon S4.
Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks and rock on...
Ahhh, the lollipop update irreparably locks the bootloader so you can't even sideload twrp. Sorry man, but you're stuck. You can still root it tho...piece of cake. Use kingroot, then replace it with SuperSU. Instructions are in the link: http://www.w0lfdroid.com/2015/05/How-to-Remove-Replace-KingUser-KingRoot-with-SuperSU.html?m=1

Hmm. No recovery at all then. Ah well...those are the breaks I guess. Thanks for confirming root.

I read a few posts that alluded to it being possible to flash the Kitkat firmware via Odin. Yay or nay?

Oh dear. I recall being able to reflash the bootloader etc on a g3 using Odin...to roll it back...but that was over a year ago. About the s4...probably not. Worst case, you brick it. Otherwise it just won't boot. In other words, I would be really surprised. I'll think about it and let you know if I remember anything. The best way to confirm or negate would be to Google it.
The only reason they were rolling back to KitKat was to root it early in the lollipop stages, I think. The bootloader was already and permanently upgraded. -I think. I'm tied and groggy right now...

Yeah I was Google it but couldn't find anything concrete. It would seem to work and I doubt a hard brick would ensue. A soft brick could be recovered using Kies or smartswitch though in most cases. Thanks
