Gear S Working with Hangouts! - Samsung Gear S

I was on the fence of getting a Gear S because I primarily use hangouts (SMS integrated) as my primary messaging platform. I was aware I'd be able to receive messages on my watch, but not be able to respond. However upon getting my watch and setting it up. I got a hangouts message, swiped to the left, clicked the three dots.. To my surprise I had the option to REPLY or DISMISS. Replying works fantastic with either the preset messages, keyboard, or voice input, and SENDS THE MESSAGE OVER DATA! ( Not even SMS.) This is absolutely fantastic. I figured I'd post this here because I was looking tirelessly for concrete evidence on this before making my purchase and was unable to find any. It's also worth nothing, that if i dismiss the message from my phone, I lose the ability to reply to it from my watch.
I'm not using Gear S Notification extender app either, it's working natively.

Yes, viber and whatsapp work as well.. The only con would be that you can't initiate a new message from the watch like messages.. Also in viber notification, it allows to reply only the first time you see it.. Next time it shows only dismiss option..

I've noticed that i can ONLY reply if i have Android Wear installed also. I don't even have to open it, just have it installed. If I remove it, I lose the functionality to reply.

Good to know! I was using Gear Notification Extender (got my Gear S Thursday) but didn't like how it labeled everything as GNE. I look forward to using this. Now if I could just get the Gear S to last me a full 24 hours...

Great! Thanks for posting this. Some Google apps play nice with Samsung features.

Thanks for this info. I installed Andriod Wear and now I have the reply functionality for hangouts which I did not have prior to doing so.
Would anyone know how to get email notifications over 3g while the watch is "Remotely Connected" to a phone (Note 5 in my case)?

Pushbullet for notifications on your TrueSmart

Hi Folks. First of all, I'm new here. I just created a profile to suggest you the following:
Pushbullet; it's an app that allows you to send and receive notifications, links, files, etc, between devices.
So, I was thinking if maybe somebody knows a way around to use this app as a substitute for the Osmart Companion, that doesn't work so well and also depends completely on bluetooth. I'm using it right now to manually send stuff from my smartphone to the TrueSmart, but I just found out that Pushbullet now supports Tasker integration, what makes me think that, if you know how, it is possible to create a profile on Tasker that allows you to automatically send a notification to your TrueSmart whenever you receive a SMS, for example.
However, despite being a huge fan of android and apps in general, my programming skills sucks really bad, even at Tasker, which I guess must be programming for beginners.
Has anyone already tried to do something related? Please let me know.
Thanks!
I haven´t try that app, but I´m using 'Notisync' and, at least for me and until now, it´s working. The only one thing I don´t have got: automatically unlock the screen (I´m using Oclock) and show a window with the notification content in. For this, I´m using 'Notify me!' app. It turns on the screen, but not unlock it (it only shows the notification content if the screen is already on). I continue investigating .
I hope this helps someone.

I have tried many apps and so far at least this one tells me when someone is calling, i cant get it to alert me of texts though, i use hangouts as my text service default app but i even tried the standard messages app and it still doesnt allow the texts to go through, did you have to do anything special for the texts?
as for pushbullet i started messing with it the other day but all it does it notify my watch that theres a message waiting on my phone i still need to look at the phone to see/reply to the message.
figured out a way with pushbullet and tasker to show who the text is from and what the message said, now if only there was a way to reply

I don´t use SMS and never try that. But I tried an app called 'Tablet talk' that can syncronize SMS and phone calls (even when you receive phone call, it shows a window showing the contact photo and bottons to interact with that call). I configured the phone as 'phone' and the watch as 'tablet'. The problema I had was the same: it doesn´t unlock the Oclock screen.

Yeah i've been a user of tablet talk for a while and it is a good app just looking for others since i dont like always having to reconnect them together.
Hey everyone,
I contacted the developers of Push Bullet a few weeks ago when I got my TS. He indicated that it was a space they wanted to occupy for wearables and tablets. They have a number of things they're rolling out for their primary app first, but it's on the slate for the future.

how did you guys get it to install? Side load? It wont let me install from the play store since it says it is incompatible with device. I love pushbullet, and would love to use it with the TS
Yeah side loaded from dropbox.
sent from my note 3 running beans.
For sms I have been using google voice, hangouts and the XVoice+ Xposed plugin. here's how it works:
1) I have moved most people to use mt GV number to reach me as I have several PH numbers so step one is socialize the GV ph number.
2) XVoice+ forces all sms through the google voice app
3) in the google voice app > Settings > Sync and Notifications set recieve text messages to "via the messaging app.
4) if you want to use hangouts go through the steps to make it the default SMS/MMS client otherwise you can use what ever SMS app you want.
default result is I get the same conversation on my phone as on my PC as on my watch. For me this works out well.. the only issues i have are broadcast messages that are short message based like twitter to sms. Google Voice will not support these messages.

[Q] Trouble with text messages on LG watch

i have an htc one m7. everything seems to work fine with watch and phone, i'm using google hangouts for my texts. problem is none of them are showing up on the watch. well one did tonite, but thats been it. i was running skyvi so messages would show up on phone screen, and the g watch messages worked then, only problem was that on the watch when the messages showed up thru skyvi on the watch, when it said "tap here to reply" nothing would happen. so i deleted skyvi and like i said now i get nothing. i reset the watch, re-paired it. and nothing worked. any ideas? also anyone else finding the g watch is a tremendous drain on the phone battery. i barely use it during the day and by 1 or 2 i'm down to 55% power on the phone.
Make sure to set notifications in Hangouts to vibrate.
Thanks Devs, from my LG G2

Shouldn't need to...I don't have mine set to vibrate and I get all my Hangouts notifications
I have also noticed a large drain on my phone battery, much more than with my Pebble. But there is nothing abnormal in the battery stats, at all. No strange wakelocks, nothing.

i have the factory version of hangouts on my htc one m7 if i send a text to myself. i get it on the phone, but nothing on the watch. if i switch text apps to something like textra and turn on augmented smartwatch pro, the texts come thru on the watch, but with the little icon of augmented smartwatch pro. BUT i cant voice reply to any sms since i am not using hangouts. any ideas how to fix hangouts so the texts come thru on the watch? ive called LG and no luck. and htc just tells me i cant delete hangouts from the phone, if i try, it always replaces it with the factory version.

Are you updating Hangouts to the most recent version? I wouldn't expect the factory version to do anything... Wear didn't exist back then. Also, when you're sending yourself a text... Be sure you either turn off the phone display or exit out of Hangouts before the text is received. Otherwise the watch won't alert you to something that's right in front of your face anyway.

[Q] Want to use gear s with stock group messaging > 10 recipients

Hello. I have a TMO GN3 and gear s watch, which I love, but I'm having a rather annoying issue that I've had little luck in solving. If anyone can point me in the right direction or provide a solution, I would be forever indebted.
I am part of a golfers group that constantly sends group text messages. I've used. Textra with great success, but it doesn't work with my watch. I like getting my messages and being able to reply on my watch, but unless I use the stock messaging app, my watch is useless. I'd like to use the stock messaging app and figure out a way to remove the 10 recipient limit. My phone is rooted with a very stable ROM, but it doesn't have that feature. I'd really like to use a modified stock application that works with the gear s. Thanks for any help.

In the Google Play store, there is an app called "Notifications for Gear S" it supports a bunch of messaging sevices, that you may want to check out. I don't know all of them, but Hangouts is on the list, which supports texting to regular cell numbers. May be worth looking into.
In terms of a different ROM, there is a Rooting thread here that you could check.
Good luck.

Using Hangouts on Gear S

so it's great that with Gear Notification Extender that I can receive and reply to Hangouts messages. Is there a way however to initiate a message to a hangout subscriber?
What I've been doing thus far is keeping a notification for them on my watch and simply replying to that same notification. However, is there a way to simply initiate a conversation that will hit their hangouts app. another more clean and simple way using just my Gear S ?

I just bought one and would love this feature. Handouts handles all my texts and my Google voice number is my primary number.
No Hangout app for Gear, so.....
You will need Hangout app on the watch. Since Hangout is from Google and Tizen is a competitor to Android OS, there is no way in hell that Google will produce anything for this OS.

[Q] How well does it play with Google apps? How does it compare to Moto 360?

I got Moto 360 last Friday and I'm already "meh" about it. All it really does is show the notifications and give you the default actions. Gear S looks really sexy and after watching some videos, it seems it can do a lot more. However, there are a few things I can do with my Moto 360 that are very useful to me:
1. While driving/in a meeting, I can text/reply to e.g. my girlfriend. I can say simply "Ok Google, text my girlfriend I'm on my way". Can I do that with Gear S (don't care if it's S Voice)?
2. Can I retain the same functionality from Android wear in terms of notifications? I.e. reply to a text message, dismiss a Hangout message, etc?
2. I use Google Keep for note taking - does tha work on Tizen/Gear S? If not, what are some good Note taking apps?
Thanks a ton!
1. You can use S Voice and say "Hi Gear" to get it going.
2. If you get the app Gear Notification Extender (GNE) from the Play Store you can reply to and dismiss Hangout messages. GNE also lets Google Maps update to your watch and vibrate every time there is an update. Like when I'm driving and using Maps every time the directions update my Gear S will vibrate and display the new directions on the watch. I find this useful when I'm using my phone to stream music and don't have the maps on the screen at the time. So it's like having a second screen for your phone while your using it.
3. Don't know about note taking as I don't take notes on the Gear S. I saw some note taking apps in the Samsung store tho. It sucks we have to use a separate Samsung store. None of my Google Play credits transfer over.
Thanks for the answers. How is S Voice? I've used it only a few times on my Note 4, it seems to take much longer to recognize what I'm saying (e.g. I'd say "weather tomorrow", then wait 3-4 seconds for it to recognize my voice vs. Google that seems to recognize it immediately).
I've heard of this GNE app, hope it works fine. Anyway, I just ordered the Gear S from Amazon and it'll be here tomorrow.

Yes. When the G-S' display is on you can say "Hi, Gear" and tell it what you want it to do. Also, if you're trying to input something using the keyboard you can invoke voice by long-pressing the settings button and selecting it as a text input option. Coming from a Gear I I'm impressed (so far) with S Voice's performance (speed and accuracy) compared to the OG.

Sort of. All the G-S' inbuilt apps are designed to work with their Samsung equivalents on your phone (EG: Samsung's Mail client, Messaging client, etc.). If you're using those the comprehensiveness of managing, creating, and responding to notifications is light years better on the Gear. If you're using GMail, Hangouts, etc., you'll get notifications in the same generic way all non-Samsung apps get them. They appear in a list you swipe left from the home screen to access. You'll see them and sometimes with great detail. But you won't be able to respond from your Gear. There's a "show on phone" icon in the notification message (as well as Smart Relay which displays what you're looking at on your Gear on your phone when you pick the latter up) but if you're a Google Apps user you're better off with Android Wear.
2. I use Google Keep for note taking - does tha work on Tizen/Gear S? If not, what are some good Note taking apps?

You can launch the voice memo app with S-Voice and it starts recording immediately. Whatever it records it transfers to the phone and also transcribes it. If I need to use whatever the note is in another app I just paste it there. For getting lists on my phone I use Exchange tasks. They show up in the calendar app. A lot of note/task apps for the Gear require their own companion app which I loathe. I want to use notes/tasks where I normally use them and not have to introduce another app to keep track of just to get notes/tasks to my Gear. For those using Google's apps there are some third party apps in Samsung Gear Apps store but none seem too highly rated.
Bottom line is if you're an "all in" user of Google's stuff you're better off with Android Wear. If you're a MS/Samsung user you'll get a lot more functionality with the Gear family.
3) "Notepad+" app have keyboard and voice input to take note in Gear.
almost every other note app have a keyboard and voice input.
With "GearTasks" you can add Task/Note by keyboard or voice in Google Tasks.
I got the moto 360 for a few days then returned it to the store. Personally i think its a joke compared to the GS
In every way! Sure more google apps no doubt. But its a watch!!!
And the android wear system is horrible in my opinion. Tizen u get more controll. Gs beeing a phone on its own is a winner for me
Just the fact that i can leave my phone at home and get all my notifications and calls fowarded to the watch is what makes the Gear S miles ahead of any other wearable in my opinion...including the apple watch. And if set up correctly it does it all seamlessly
