I have a KFHDX 7 with Fire OS 4.5.4.
1 ) Currently, it's impossible to root with this version, right ? How downgrade ?
If it's rooted :
2 ) Is it possible to install a new rom ? like nethunter ?
3 ) We can install .apk from android store with a drag'n'drop ? (I haven't see the similare version of moon+ reader between amazon store and google store :-/ )

Check this thread for downgrade info. In short you need to rollback to 3.2.8 then upgrade to 4.5.2 which can be rooted. There is risk executing this procedure including a hard brick. If you are unfamiliar with HDX devices they are exceptionally difficult to recover once hosed. Tools/techniques used on other android devices (factory cable, fastboot, usb spoofing, etc) simply don't work. You can not unlocked the bootloader on your device as Amazon has incorporated rollback protection ('efuse') that will permanently disable your device if you make the attempt.
Once on 4.5.2 You can install Safestrap v4 and then flash Nexus v4 or CM11. No other 3rd party roms are supported.
Pay attention to the warnings/cautions if you opt to rollback - especially those dealing with OTA and keeping wifi disabled. If you take an update while on 3.2.8 your device will instantly brick. At other times you will be upgraded to 4.5.4 and have to start the rollback process over again.
There are no step-by-step tutorials or helpful videos. You have to read, read, read and ask questions when needed. Do your homework before posting. If you ask a question that has been answered multiple times you probably will not get a friendly reception.

Ok thanks you alot for this informations. So I prefer to stop, I don't want a high brick. (I have already crack somes video games, and unbrick.. but I don't know android ^^)
Now i'm not sure to change with a nexus 7... It's the same resolution, more possibility with nexus 7, same price.
What do you think about that ?
Successfully rolled back from 4.5.4
My hdx 7 3rd gen was running 4.5.4 and was able to successfully rollback to 3.2.8 and then upgrade to 4.5.2. Next step is rooting!

Be sure to block OTA. An update will push you to 4.5.4 and kill root.

Dude - just get a Nexus 7. Easy to root/unlock and supports tons of third party roms. HDX has better HW but is a royal pain to mod and does not support your preferred rom.

I bought an HDX 7 from a friend today. He rooted it on version 13.3.0.2.
So I turned on the device, connected it to WiFi, wanted to download Flashify. But then we got some visitors, after the visit/coffee I checked my HDX and omg it updated to version 4.5.2 automatically.
My goal is to run pure Android on the HDX asap, but now I am stuck and don't know where to start. I did read a lots of topics but none of them is showing me a clear answer.
Can someone help me out? (afraid to brick the thing)

AFAIK, it ain't happening. Maybe you can SafeStrap a rom once the beta ggow or someone is working on is done & get close, but once you are beyond 3.2.7, there isn't really any turning the clock back. You can possibly roll back to 3.2.8, but you are still going to be unable to unlock the BL. You can root & then add Google's services to the tablet, but as far as running 100% pure Android, I don't think so, at least not for a while.

The 4.5.2 upgrade destroyed the option to run 'pure android' in native mode - at least with the known suite of exploits. However, a solution is moving through beta test that will support a near AOSP experience in a 'virtual' environment (technically not correct but lacking a better descriptor). Give it a few weeks to firm up; keep watching the forums.

- Root current version
- disable OTA

I have released the Thor version of Safestrap here
You will need to upgrade again to 4.5.2 to use this.
This will enable you to install HDX Nexus ROM v4
Please read the thread through carefully, if you're not sure about anything please ask first before proceeding. There are now a number of people that can help you.

You have two options:
(1) If you stay on 13.3.2.8 then you can install Safestrap 3.75 and then install "Safestrap Nexus ROM 1.0.1" Jelly Bean Based.
(2) If you upgrade to 13.4.5.2 then you can install the new version of Safestrap 4.0.1 and then install "HDX Nexus ROM v4" KitKat Based.

You can not use CM11 or any other CM variant. Your options are limited to FireOS (stock) or an adaptation of the excellent Nexus rom which has no limitations relative to CM11. Suggested procedure:
- DO NOT enable WiFi unless instructed; use a tethered connection to carry out all actions and file transfers
- Root 3.2.8 using Towelroot. You will need to enable WiFi for a few seconds during execution; disable immediately after
- Upgrade to 4.5.2 and root referencing links at the bottom of this post. You do not need to install gaps or block OTA (remember to keep WiFi off).
- install Safestrap v4 and flash Nexus v4 to the stock slot (here)
There are many sub-steps to the above outline. You will need to do some reading and learn how to use adb for file transfers and installations via tether. It is not a simple step-by-step process, although it may evolve into that over time. Ask questions along the way and set aside sufficient time and patience for the journey. There are significant risks involved; a simple mistake will likely yield a bricked (unrecoverable) device.
A more streamlined (and somewhat safer) approach involves installing Safestrap v3 and Nexus v1 on 3.2.8 (defers 4.5.2 upgrade). These are older variants but still very serviceable and time proven. Post back if you prefer to go that route. You can always upgrade to Safestrap v4 / Nexus v4 at a later time. Important: If you remain on 3.2.8 OTA should be blocked using HDX toolkit to prevent a near guaranteed brick if you enable WiFi.

Response from ggow is consistent with mine and GSLEON3. Read through them all and then decide which path you want to take. Keep in mind CM11/12 are off the table but you can get a very nice Jellybean or KitKat experience via Safestrap and Nexus which includes full access to the Play store and related Google apps/services.

I don't know if I bricked my device, but it isn't working anymore. Fully charged but the screen remains black (also after 30 or 40 seconds power button).
Spoke with Amazon support, after trying some tricks they decided to do a product replacement.
So in a few days I am receiving a new Kindle, and then, based on the Fire OS version I have to decide what my next step will be.
1. Can i root if I'm on 4.5.5?

Not directly. You may be able to rollback to 3.2.8 then upgrade to 4.5.2 which can be rooted. However, the procedure is risky with a significant brick potential. Also unproven on 4.5.5. I no longer provide assistance with v4>v3 rollbacks. You can find more info here. There are numerous caveats; be sure to spend and evening reading before attempting anything; ask questions if in doubt.
Amazon did not detail the changes in 4.5.5.

You can't - at least on FireOS v4. Your device should auto-update to FireOS v5 over the next few weeks (according to Amazon). Possible a root option will become available on that version - or someone will device a way to get the Play Store working w/o root. Not going to happen with v4; you'll have to wait.
Root access can only be obtained on 4.5.2 or below (this is likely not the case here).

Be prepared for a battle as Amazon and Google frameworks don't play nice together on FireOS v4 (KitKat based). That said - it is possible as the link suggests. Some apps run great while others, including the Play Store and license entitlements, can be temperamental. If you do get it working/stable be sure to block automatic Google Services updates so your hard work doesn't get undone as new versions roll in.
You might want to wait until after you device is upgraded to FireOS v5 (Lollipop based) as experience on other devices suggests Google Play services is more compatible with that version. Other options include sideloading favoriate apps and/or installing an alternate app marketplace such as 1Mobile.

It was recently learned 4.5.5.1 can also be rooted using the same method. A big win for 4th gen owners as 4.5.3-4.5.5 can not be rooted and there is no rollback option. 4th gen devices will also receive FireOS v5 which has been rooted on other Amazon tabs.

I saw the other thread... Any one you know working to make a working true-recovery and/or CM build w/ pseudo-recovery for the 4th Gen?
How does one go about exploring creating a CM build for a device? Instructions? /just curious, not that I'd actually try it...
Well first I believe the bootloader would need to be unlocked or a SafeStrap workaround found. Neither of these events has happened to my knowledge, so custom ROMs remain out of reach on the 4th gen.

Edit: I felt uncomfortable with this post immediately after submitting. Looking back it appears loading Safestrap v4 on a 4th gen device is a bad idea. Leaving the original text for reference as email notifications probably went out.
@rockon999 is correct for known working solutions. However, a recent development has lead to a root solution for 4th gen devices running FireOS 4.5.5.1. A few daring users then installed Safestrap v4 (risky!) and a custom rom (either CM11 or Nexus v4) and reported all is working well.
Please understand that if you go this route neither Safestrap v4 or any of the custom roms have been validated against a 4.5.5.1 by the developer. You might see success - or brick your device.
My guidance (FWIW): Wait a few more weeks to see if further testing confirms Safestrap v4 is safe to use with FireOS 4.5.5.1. Now, someone is bound to chime in and state that it worked for them. Great!! But don't confuse a single data point with the developer's nod-of-approval.
I'm not new to the scene, I've had my fair share with androids. Just new to hdx7, so what do I do?. This is the Amazon Kindle Fire C9R6QM HDX 7. I'm gonna use the KFHDX ToolKit v0.95 from what I've read is to disable OTA updates and run google play store. Should I completely flash to some stock android OS? Or can I keep it on the fire OS and it'll be stable? I don't want to go and brick this thing. It's running fire OS 4.5.5 which I read about and I guess is not useful? I saw a link to downgrade to 13.3.2.8, is that all I need? Just some quick help, thanks

It is rather easy to unlock the bootloader which allows any HDX custom ROM to be installed. Is the device still on FireOS 3.2.8? If so I assume you have taken steps to maintain network isolation as the device WILL brick if an OTA update is received/processed. Post back current status; will go from there.

scratch that I now got a hdx 7 which has fire os 3.2.1, which I think is pretty good? Should I just follow the main guys steps to root it, disable auto updates and install google play store?

Google Play Services/Store does not play nice with FireOS v3 or v4. Strongly recommend unlocking the bootloader and replacing FireOS with the ROM of your choosing (from those available for HDX devices).

which rom do you recommend which is stable and vanilla looking? I'm used to nexus 5, 7 os. Also would I be able to save my current 3.2.1 OS and make a backup? So I would be able to return to stock if I wanted to?

There are two Nexus builds that are faithful representations of what you likely experienced on Google's Nexus devices. The KitKat varient (Fire Nexus ROM) is feature complete with full Bluetooth and LTE support. As with all custom ROMs for this device auxiliary radio support on Android 5+ becomes more challenging due to kernel compatibility issues. That said, all core ROMs are rock solid/stable and really unleash the full potential of this aging device which still competes well against contemporary counterparts.

I believe your device is currently running a KitKat build of Fire Nexus. Doesn't get much smoother than that. However, if you desire a more contemporary UI any of the Nougat builds should work fine. I'm partial to LineageOS but don't interpret that as a ding against the others. Note: you will need to unlock the bootloader to use any of the Nougat based ROMs; root is not sufficient. Also note Fire Nexus is already rooted.
I am referring to my other Kindle Fire HDX 7 that has never been rooted. I have two they are my kids' kindles. The one that you helped me fix is running Thor. The other that I am considering rooting is running the latest update to the Kindle Fire OS for the HDX 7 which is 4.5.5.1. My son wants Google play on it but I was able to add a bunch of his favorite apps from Google Play onto it using Dropbox and transfering the APKs from his phone to his kindle with Astro and all the apps we transferred worked except Mario Run which requires Google Play Services. If I can keep him happy with it the way it is I am not going to root it but if I decide to I was just curious which was the most preferred.
