As for unrooting, there are guides out there on the internets, however, from my understanding it boils down to "Use smart switch".
Can't speak on custom roms yet. Haven't taken the plunge and given up my Knox status... yet.

You say installing custom roms will affect knox. That is not entirely true. As long as the rom is based on the original kernel k box should stay 0*0

I was under the impression that flashing Anything that was not a signed Samsung package would trip the knox bit.
can you link any technical explanation on how the Knox detection functions? I haven't been able to find anything about it except Samsung's spiel about how Knox protects corporate users.

Honestly I understand little of the technical jargon but I have proof that not all roms trip knox

I've updated to the 5.1.1 so probably won't root for the time being as seems some have faced issue.

Nothing wrong with that. Although root has both pros and cons, it is only useful for some. No matter which you choose, it will be a good choice.

I've been running CyanogenMod 11 for about a month now. I like it a lot, however there are instabilities. Youtube cannot play videos at all, for example; Snapchat totally fails to work; and one or two apps I've tried to install wouldn't even open. Occasionally a program will crash with a "Such-and such service has stopped" error notice.
Can anyone suggest a more stable ROM? I'm a newbie to flashing, I'm not experienced or interested in trying out different ROMs. I'm not a power user, I just want a stable, reliable ROM. Is cm11 known to have the issues I'm experiencing? Can anyone suggest an alternative?

Since cm-11.0 for this device is not in nightlies major bugs should be expected. Sorry, I don't have a suggestion, but I have a question. Does the headphone jack work on cm11?

Yes, the headphone jack works fine.
I've made the decision to return to the official Samsung ROM, so if anybody could point me in the direction of a safe, reliable download for that I'd be very grateful.

Nightly is the first "Official" status of a device from CM. If the device is very stable, with all system working properly and with minimal buggy behaviors CM begins building the ROM officially as a "Nightly" assuming the dev is following best practices etc.

I don't think that anyone has the stock rom for the Mega(s) yet, waiting patiently for the guys upstairs to crack the bootloader.
however you might try to restore with Kies.

You are not right, I for instance have stock ROM on my Mega and I am quite satisfied... Ohhh, maybe I'm a little lying... :silly: it is MegaFireMj2V5 from megalomanic14 which is based upon a stock ROM but is greatly improved - if you are looking for alternative to stock or CM11 rom's it's worth a shot.
As for return to stock ROM - be careful to choose right version: all new firmware (beginning from CNA1) are 'enhanced' with new bootloader and Samsung KIES which is new security system. If you upgrade your Mega by Kies or by Odin with newest firmware you will be lacked possibility to downgrade AND every attempt to root or flash custom recovery will result in tipping flashing counter without any possibility to clear it. So be extremely cautious if you want to mod your Mega with no problems.
You can choose older firmware on Sammobile an flash it thru Odin - then you will have fresh stock ROM on your unit. There are many tutorials how to do it.

I've been on Sammobile and selected "I9205XXUCNA2_I9205BTUCNA1_BTU.zip", which I intend to install in the next couple of hours unless anyone on here screams at me that I shouldn't! I'm in the UK with a GT-i9250, so I believe that's the right version for me.
To be honest, I'm not worried about tipping the flashing counter (if I even understand properly what that means). I rooted my phone some time ago, and liked that. Two weeks ago I decided to try Cyanogenmod since I've never used a different ROM. I wasn't impressed, and have decided I want to go back to Samsung original. If, in the process, I prevent myself from ever being able to flash another alternative ROM, or I void the phone's warrenty in any way, I can live with that.

OK, it's your choice... in fact newest firmware do not offer nothing new but bootloder without return and KNOX. CNA2 it's firmware with KNOX embedded. For mundane user this means nothing special, but for somebody who plan to root and mod it could be pain in... Try to read a little about rooting firmware with KNOX... but as I said, you are warned... tipping counter means setting flag which shows to e.g. service so there was installed unofficial software and it means so you are lacking your warranty. With firmware with KNOX this is irreversible because setting such flag physically burns efuse in system making hardware change. Cheers...

You make a good case, and perhaps I should install an earlier version, then. Thanks. However, I've looked on Sammobile and they seem to offer only the latest version. Where can I download an earlier KNOX-free version, please?

Agreed. You guys have convinced me that I should be flashing an old version of Samsung, not the latest with KNOX. But I can only do that if I can find one! Can anyone please point me in the right direction?

Hmmm, you are right... In such case i recommend you to install custom ROM MegaFireMJ2V6 made by megalomanic14 on basis stock MJ2 which you can find HERE.
Actually I am using this ROM and can say it is very good - looks like stock but is much faster. It's rooted already. Version X offer firmware stripped from unneeded apps to the extent.

Thank you very much. Most of that sentences was Greek to me, but I get the idea! The truth is, I put my foot into the water of flashing custom ROMS, and decided it wasn't for me. I just want one, reliable ROM that I can live with for many months without having to change it. That's why I decided to go back to Samsung, because there were too many bugs in Cyanogenmod and I don't want to start testing one ROM after the next. I just want to install a reliable, bug-free ROM now, and have done with it. So you think that MegaFireMJ2V6 would be such a ROM in my case?

Thank you, but I've tried this several times, and the only download available is the most recent.
You are wrong. It shows all the firmwares released for a model. I can see all the releases for GT-I9200. Attached is a screenshot of the older firmware without knox....
As far as I understand it, these are all the same ROM, simply different versions for different countries. When I put in my phone, GT-i9250, I am presented with a similar page, but it's only the one ROM; 4.2.2 with KNOX.
Ok man, I am done trying to explain things to you. The list you showed only displays Knox firmware, but what you said is not true. Here is another site with older firmware displayed for the I9205. There is no I9250 model Mega afaik..

I apologise if I have offended you in any way, that certainly wasn't my intention. I'm simply new to all of this and don't understand it well. I appreciate the new link, and thank you for your help.
OK - this is probably a strange question, but I am coming face to face with MaaS360 soon with the company I work for. Basically any rooted phones are going to be cut off from corporate email. I understand that there may be ways around this, but I just don't have the energy to try and work around this.
So my question is - are there any ROMs that might be well suited to be un-rooted and still function correctly? I understand that there are going to be some apps that will no longer work, but I am trying to find one that doesn't have deeply embedded features that would depend on root. I also don't want to go completely stock - since I know that this may lock the bootloader.
I have been running Sophisticated, but I did like some of the 4.4-based ROMs like SlimKat, AOKP, and CM11. Would any of the 4.4 ROMs (non-touchwiz) be "unrootable"? And is this process reversible? Can I re-root later if needed? Can the bootloader remain unlocked while the ROM is not rooted?
Part of me thinks - just get an unlocked MotoX and stop all this flashing business...(blasphemy - I know!)

Go to this thread and follow the directions for returning to Stock..If you want to be locked then flash MJ9 through Odin.. You will be fully stock and locked:good:

Thanks for the reply - but my question was actually about whether any 3rd party ROMs would function properly after removing root. Actually - is it even POSSIBLE to remove root from a 3rd party ROM (maybe something like N3BULA or a 4.4 ROM like Slim) in the first place? Would it just FC constantly because certain parts of the ROM don't function correctly without root access?

Well N3bula yes.. There are options in Settings that require root. No you could choose not to use some of those options but that is up to you. Yes it is possible to remove root.. In SU I believe there is an option to unroot your device..Check it out..

OK. I really don't want to go down the "stock" path and end up with a locked BL - that is why i am looking for alternatives!

Now I am starting to think that the 4.4 ROMs out there may not be very well suited to the idea of "unrooting".
I have tried a couple of 4.4 ROMs like CM11 and AOKP in the last couple of days, and there seems to be a recurring theme - they all have the Superuser menus built into the settings. Will this be problematic?
I have seen that the SuperSU app does have an unroot option in the settings, but I have read conflicting reports of what this actually does. It sounds like it removes the app, but leaves the binaries behind, and this might be detected by the root detection features in the Maas360 app.

The NH7 update fixed the exploit that the TowelRoot method was using. The only way to obtain Root with NH7 is the Chainfire Auto-root. Unfortunately, this will trip KNOX. It may be possible for someone to find a new exploit, but one hasn't been found yet.
But your question sparks my curiosity, so please let me pose a question to you: What are your reasons for not wanting to trip KNOX? I'm genuinely curious because outside of Enterprise users, I haven't really seen anyone needing the features of KNOX and it's rare to hear of any issues with Sprint (or Samsung) warranty claims.

The main reason I'm concerned about not tripping KNOX is I suppose I'm paranoid about having an issue if I need to get it serviced. I am not an Enterprise user. I actually have insurance through Best Buy and I doubt that anyone in the store would check the KNOX flag before they put it in a box to ship to the repair facility. I guess I should just lose the paranoia and use Chainfire Autoroot.

Sorry to raise the dead here but I can't seem to get a straight answer. I don't care about my warranty. I actually use KNOX mode and was wondering if there's a method where I can root but still have the KNOX mode? Thanks!
the phone in question is a T mobile Galaxy S5, used to be mine running full root since 4.4.4 and had cn 11 on it, now wife is useing it and she wated it stock, so I odined the latest stock t mobile 5.0 firmware onto it, since then it has updated twice to 5.1.1 as I'm not too familiar with 5.1.1 I figured I better ask if it can be rooted.

5.1.1 can be rooted using hispasian's kernel. It can find in the android development thread. BTW, tell your wife that Apple is tight about "rolling back" and/or if at all, to previous ios versions if the new version stinks. I was lucky to perform rollbacks on older iphone generations but the newer ones are harder for obvious reasons. I stayed on 4.4.2 because of towelroot -- I'm not too fond of 5.1.1 because of the lag and unstable root methods right now.

Thanks I'll loom there here in a minute I want her to be an android person I like androids better because you can remove the SD card, Apple has no SD card, plus as long as it's not a s6 you can swap batteries, I usually keep two spares in my Jeep when we go looking in NC for houses just in case

there are modified TW roms that are prerooted if self rooting fails
random reboots with what apps installed? disable any you dont use, disable gestures, samsung crap, etc etc...

not sure what the rush is, there is no such thing as sudden updates that you cant stop, if you flash 4.4 then it's stuck on 4.4, but what if the newer baseband wont work well with the old android?
also, 4.4 is crap, you'll be insecure with fewer features & so on
i really find it unlikely that 5.1.1 is causing all problems, also you could even try 5.0.1

Turn off wifi and mobile data....
I tried but I was too late it went to 5.1.1, it is rooted though so until XDA cones out with a way to unlock the bootloader I have to wait. Because if I try installing TWRP like I did at first it hangs on the custom love indicator screen

No, but it's hilariously easy to get Samsung to honor a warranty on a device with a tripped Knox flag, if that's what you're worried about

Question for you all...
I been seeing in a few spots this should be possible but I like to be safe rather than sorry.
Is it possible to do the following on a US Cellular S6 Edge Model: SM-G925R4? :
1 ) Downgrade to a Pingroot capable stock rom.
2) Use the root from that to use FlashFire to install something like CM.
3) Not Trip Knox.
If this is possible then can you extract and use Samsung Pay but using something like rootcloak on it with knox not tripped or is that not safe?
It doesnt work for my bank yet but it would be nice to have in the future.

if u trip knox samsung will not work
installing custom rom like cm or something else will trip knox
if u want samsung pay dont root or do anything
I understand that but that wasnt my question.
Trying to find about doing the steps above.
Install official samsung down to rootable firmware then use that root with flashfire. Was told that method could work. However if I can just get root from a downgrade ill be happy.
Downgrading could be possible with Odin depending on y your firmware version. You can always try installing the earliest firmware for that particular variant. Worst thing to happen would be a failure of installation. The earliest firmware versions are compatible with pingpongroot , but if the su binaries are detected Samsung pay will fail no matter what

Now I suppose if I can flash an earlier stock will it trip knox? Also what would happen if it fails? Just says error and thats it?

It is completely based on date. When I tried flashing an early firmware on my galaxy s4 installation failed and I just got a 'fail' message in Odin. No Knox issues. I would assume that would happen with you. Go give it a try. I am rather confident that it will fail on your device, but if it does no worries, just restore the latest firmware and live without root
