Unbrick my verizon s4, stuck in Download/Odin mode - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Well, I did something majorly wrong. I'm not a newbie, I've rooted and installed roms before, but this time...I screwed it up.
So I got a new phone from Asurion and it came with lollipop. I used kingroot to root the phone, then wanted to install TWRP, using the Manager. Eventually I got to a prompt which asked me if I was sure it was the right partition, and I said Yes. It reported it was unsuccessful and tried to boot into recovery mode. It never made it. My initial screen now says "Samsung Custom" and it throws me into the Downloading screen and I can't do anything at this point. I remove the battery, try rebooting, etc.
So I figured I would load the stock rom using Odin 3.09, but my device never gets discovered. So, I'm up the creek right now.
Can anyone assist me in potential ways to bring this thing back to life, or will I be stuck putting in another claim to Asurion. I guess spending 200 overall isn't the worst thing...but Odin used to be pretty solid, and it IS in download mode, so I figure there must be some way to get the phone to be recognized. I'm going to of course try installing USB drivers again and see if that works.
Thanks in advance for any help. I feel real stupid as I'm an IT professional and really rely on my phone for alerts, emails, etc, so this is quite an embarrassment.

Update: I got it discovered!! So I'm going to look for a quick tutorial to get this thing up and running, but if someone has a quick link that would be great. Yeah, I know I'm being a wuss asking for handholding, but, like I need to get this thing alive tonight. Ha

Further update. Not having any luck. When I tried to use Odin with an md5 file, I got a NAND write fail almost immediately. I'm scouring all over to find a good (appropriate) stock rom for this, but I'm getting a bad feeling even though its softbricked it may not be writable for whatever reason. I'm not having any luck with anything.
Most articles I find are either outdated or for a different model. So, I'll take any desperate measures at this point. Here is the Odin log:

<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..

Again, thanks for any help.

See if you install the OC1 tar. If you got your phone from repair, they probably updated the phone to the latest. You won't be able to install NC5.

Hey Rohit that worked, man!!! Thank you so much! I was wracking my brain for hours last night. I'm also from NoVa, so it's good to see someone from my hometown.

You also can't install any custom recovery with the phone that you have, try reading up here on what you can and can't do with it

Ah crap. Bricked S4

How did you get it to discover your phone? I'm now in the exact same situation as you. Kingroot tricked me into thinking I had rooted my phone and could install TWRP. Now I'm stuck in "Downloading..." mode.

well my guess is if you have kies installed then run taskman and stop it and try again . if it fails again then try to download new pack of that ROM if stoping kies did't help you !!
you can download Process hacker which is better then taskman

Not installed Kies on system.......... plz guide
possibly kies at fault, or drivers from other mobile phones, make sure ya uninstall kies and anything thats not related to your phone that you dont need.
2nd cause could be quite often people dont have their cable plugged directly into a usb2 port, being plugged into a usb hub or the extra usb ports, cards etc can cause issues with odin, please check and ensure you are in a usb2 port on the back of the pc, if one isnt spare make one spare, for example, a usb mouse really doesnt need to be in a usb2 port, that could be moved.
Good luck and i hope you manage to nail down the issue, once its solved odin will work fine.

hi
i check my cable.
i uninstalled kies, but its drivers.
i connect it to my laptop directly.
and nothing happened.
what must i do?
Google search 'Windoze I9100' (or try Hopper's 'Odin won't work' thread).
Flash jb leak and get this over with.

@gastonw, did you see he had an i9100g??... Surely that jb leak won't work on an i9100g, unless there's some magic trick the leak has that I don't know about?

you have uninstalled the samsung kies, did you reinstall the device driver and rebooted you laptop?
try rebooting it first, then unplug your USB cable and plug it to a different port.
If it is still not working, try downloading a different official firmware....
hi
@MistahBungle: i don't find any useful thing. can you give me link?
 @[email protected]: i do all of that, but changing firmware. i'll do that today.
 @gastonw: what i must do? go on it or not? i have I9100.
thanks.
Lol this thread is a mess, sorry about that.
I9100? go for it, flash JB leak as I posted earlier.

You obviously didn't do that exact Google search if you 'don't find any useful thing'. It's still top of the results when you do that exact search.
Re: Hopper8's thread, no, I don't have a link, and I'm absolutely not searching for the thread for you when you're more than capable of doing so yourself (Search through his posts only, you should find it easily), tho I have my doubts about that given you obviously didn't bother doing a two word Google search (In other words, you can do either/both of those things & maybe fix your phone or it can stay busted, doesn't bother me in the slightest either way).
Google it and download kies and Samsung drivers and change your use cable might it will work

if it is still not working, try looking at your charging pin (Phone usb charging pin) if it is dirty get a dry tooth brush, remove your battery and get an acetone, put atleast two drops and brush it to the charging pin.... it could be the pin doesnt get contact well on your USB cable ( no matter how many times you change your USB cable if your charging pin has problems due to dirts, still it will do same thing.) leave it to dry well before putting back the battery.
download a different firmware, and do not download samsung kies. just get the device driver for samsung mobile phones ok....
Put back your battery and then do the combination for the download mode and flash it to ODIN....
tell me if it still doesnt work....
i experienced many failed attempts on SAMSUNG galaxy, Galaxy S2, Nexus G, Xperia acro s, Xperia sola.... so it's quite impossible that it was your phone has the issue.... BTW what happened to your very first trial of flashing that phone of yours, why did you flash a different firmware....
try everything, just keep trying it will eventually work.... if not, only one way to make it work. JTAG to one of the cellphone shops if there's any in your country....
oh yeah one more thing, try a different computer/ laptop to flash it with.... just copy every thing to a flash drive because it could be your computer too....

[Q] Status 0 no mater what

I have a Samsung Captivate SGH-I897. I have been experimenting with various roms to check them out. Now no mater what I try to do I get status 0 error. I can still get into semaphore cwm recover v6.0.2.7 mode. I can get into download mode, but odin will not see the device anymore (it used to). I have tried flashing the semaphore kernel again and even that gives status 0 and installation aborted.
Please help, I have to have my phone for work. I'm on call have to get emails on it. This is very urgent for me.
Thanks so much for any help.
Have you ever successfully flashed a ROM on this device before or is every ROM doing this?

Thanks so much for your assistance.
Don't you have any nandroid backup you can restore?
Unfortunately I do not.
If someone can tell me what files in the sdcard to replace I can still mount the sdcard to my PC.
Thanks!!!
Are you modifying the ROMs in any way before flashing them? Are you using UOT Kitchen? Status 0 error typically means the ROM is using the wrong kind of flashing script for your device. So, if you download a straightforward ROM which was designed for your phone, it should work.
Last resort, you should be able to flash to stock ROM.
Have you tried reflashing your recovery? You might take this opportunity to try an alternative recovery.
I have not tried to modify roms, im just using as is. I have tried to flash to an earlier version of cwm reocvery but get the status 0 error. If you know of a way I can go back to stock without odin I can. Atleast I can get calls in case of emergency.
Thanks!!!
Have you read this?
I can connect to the phone in download mode with Heimdall, but cant seem to find a Heimdall kernel package. Can you provide a link please?
Thanks again so much.
Sorry, this is all new to me. I've never used a Samsung phone or Odin, and I've never even heard of Heimdall before today. Just trying to help you troubleshoot.
Thanks for all your efforts.
Can anyone tell me how I can manually copy files to the sdcard strorage to recover my phone?
Thank you.
If you can connect via adb, you can transfer files that way. If you're not comfortable using adb, you can use Android Commander. If you have a card reader, though, you can just take the sd card out & put it in your computer.
I can transfer files, I just dont know what files to transfer and where to put them. Flashing does not work so it would have to be manually replacing like the system or data folder I'm thinking.
Can someone please help with this process or give a better one?
Thank you so much for any assistance.
As an update, I have been able to get Odin working again. I tried to use Odin to flash the .tar file for corn, but it does not even get to recovery mode. Next I used Odin to flash the tar file for Semaphone-JB-4.2.1-captivate and can get back into recovery mode again. I tried to use recovery mode to flash some of the past ROMs that worked yesterday, but still get the status 0 Installation aborted error.
So how can I completely wipe the phone and start completely over?
Thanks so much!!!
Another update.
I am trying the "I897UCKK4 Odin One Click - Stock, CONTAINS Bootloaders, Re-partition, Full Wipe" from post "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843". It has been sitting there for about 30 minutes now. The top left box in odin says "Set Partition".
The bottom box has:

I just closed Odin and unplugged phone and tried again. This time it worked.
Thanks all for any suggestions and assistance.
Wow! Well, congratulations! Next time, you'll be helping someone with their phone.
I made these notes for myself, but maybe they will helps someone else. Warning: Im a noob at this, but this worked for me.
1. performed "i897uckk4_Odin_One_Click_-_Stock,_CONTAINS_Bootloaders,_Re-partition,_Full_Wipe"
2. Follow http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266, skip step 5, Use odin to install "speedmod-kernel-i897-k13e-500hz.tar" Phone only boots to the Galaxy S screen, but that is okay.
3. Boot to recovery mode, mount storage, copy "cm-9.1.0-captivatemtd.zip" and flash it.
4. Boot to recovery mode, mount storage to copy Flash gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip, then flash it.
DONE.

[Q] t959v flashed Wrong PIT

hey
i just wanted to ask if anybody has a work around on my little issue
it started when i flashed the wrong pit in ODIN it hung up on the partion part (hints the wrong PIT file)
so i unplugged the device after the first five min of it hanging up and i did a battery pull now every time i touch a button on the phone it gives me the PHONE../!\..COMPUTER and i cant get it in download mode nor fastboot or just any boot for that matter ik it could be worse (BLACK SCREEN OF DOOM) but i cant use ODIN or even the KIES to flash the appropriate PIT or reset the device so if anybody's gotta walk around solution please help... any help would be exelent at this point
Try Heimdall one-click, search the thread. You should be good, don't worry.
Your phone is T959v? Be careful to flash the right files, whatever phone you are on.
That's the soft brick screen just plug into Odin and flag the right file
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
You should be able to get into download mode, although it can be a bit tricky when your soft bricked.
A Jig will do the trick though (Home made or tailor made) if your looking for an easy way to get into DL Mode that is
Cheers,
Chris
Odin will see the phone at that screen no need to worry about download mode

If you are getting a "Phone.. ! ..Computer" image (seen above) when booting phone, yes, you are bricked but it is reversible! Just follow these steps...
Make sure you have ODIN OPEN with admin privileges!
1.) Take off your back cover, remove your sim & mirco sd card.
2.) Remove your battery.
Make sure you have the USB plugged into your PC but NOT your phone!
3.) Hold the volume buttons.
4.) Put the battery in.
5.) Put the USB in.
You don't necessarily need the download mode image to be present. As long as you are getting the COM ID to light up yellow in ODIN, just flash back to stock like normal.

why don't you try with cf root via recovery?
1) Calm down. People will help you when they get the chance & not before. You do realise most of the people here are in timezones where it's still early AM, don't you ?
2) 'Odin won't work' gets covered here all the time. There are a set of troubleshooting steps you need to go through. Find similar threads, go through the steps.

Should I try to tick also Re-Partition with a PIT in Odin?
If yes, where can I find this PIT file?

No. Don't flash a .pit unless you are CERTAIN it will succeed. Ask yourself this: if Odin won't succeed flashing a ROM, why would it flash a .pit successfully? If the pit file fails, your phone will need a new motherboard. End of story.
What MistahBungle was referring to are troubleshooting steps for when an Odin flash fails. Google 'windoze i9100'. Read the first result (xda thread) and follow the steps MistahBungle posts there.
Hahaha Amazing. That Google search has a thread I posted to as the top result.

Maybe because of all the times I've searched it?
Here you go Bungle: all of those results have some sort of your list. Some versions more complete than others. But I can say you have clear domination of Google search results on the topic also note 'You've visited this page many times'
Yeah I saw, when you mentioned it I did a search. That definitely means it shouldn't be necessary for anyone to post them again.

Just to clarify, the troubleshooting steps still apply. Sun90 is meaning that if you were to flash a pit, you'd need a different file.
Edit: also MistahBungle, I did write that guide. Currently just formatting/minor corrections. Will be posting soon.

Ok thanks for your answers. Now everything is working, the phone is rooted and stuff but a few applications don't work at all such as contacts...
How can i fix this?
What do you mean by 'not working?' As in they force close on opening? Or it doesn't display your contacts? If it's not displaying contacts, sign in to your google account and let them sync. If it's force closing, you can try a few things. First go into recovery and fix permissions. If that doesn't work, clear data for the offending apps. Or, If when you rooted, did you use titanium backup to back up your apps? Then did you restore every single app backup? You can't restore things such as contacts, it's a system app.

Yes they force close. I will try this. Thanks for your help
Not one to be harsh but it sounds like you should of read about using flashing etc and the read again before starting anything.

Slimkat, suddenly won't boot

Hi, my i9100 is on Slimkat (Slim-i9100-4.4.2.build.4-OFFICIAL-3666) -- and has been for a while, slightly over two months I believe.
Yesterday, after rebooting the phone it refused to boot -- it's stuck on the first boot screen, the one that says "Samsung Galaxy SII GT-I9100" and has the yellow triangle on it. It does react to power button, I can still turn off the phone this way. I did not do anything unusual lately, haven't tried installing anything.
I cannot access recovery:
Home+VolDown+Power -- brings up a Warning screen ("A custom OS can cause critical")
Home+VolUp+Power -- does nothing, the boot screen appears for 2 seconds, the phone reboots/ turns off
Any idea how:
diagnose the issue
retrieve data on internal SD
bring the phone back to usable state
Thanks!
No recovery = your only option is back to stock via Odin/download mode. You shouldn't lose any data doing this, but it may not fix the problem on its own, you still may need to do a factory reset after doing this.
Only way to find out is to try it & see what happens. And no, you don't have any other options.
Thanks a god, Download mode is working.
As say above flash stock ROM via Odin. Download: sammobile.com
Can someone guide me to a suitable recovery? I've tried flashing "CWM-KitKatCompatible-i9100.tar" (which seemed like a good idea since the phone was already on KitKat) via Odin 3.09 however this did not quite work:
Code:
<ID:0/007> Added!!
<ID:0/007> Odin v.3 engine (ID:7)..
<ID:0/007> File analysis..
<ID:0/007> SetupConnection..
<ID:0/007> Initialzation..
<ID:0/007> Get PIT for mapping..
<ID:0/007> Firmware update start..
<ID:0/007> SingleDownload.
<ID:0/007> zImage
<ID:0/007> NAND Write Start!!
<ID:0/007> Complete(Write) operation failed.
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)
Can still enter download mode. Now I need a working recovery. Slimkat was on TWRP I believe however I can't seem to find a standalone version (flashable via Odin)
No, that was not a good idea at all. Because you won't fix it that way.
You won't fix it by flashing recovery. You need to go back to stock, get it fixed, then you can re-root the phone & either restore a nandroid or reinstall a custom rom/kernel.
Also, if you flash a recovery independently of the kernel, it won't stick anyway & will disappear when you reboot.
So...You can either take the advice you've been given & fix your phone fairly quickly, or you can muck around for however long & live with a busted phone.
Problems with Odin flash = same as everyone else; find Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread stickied in General & go through the troubleshooting steps in a methodical way as many times as you need to in order to get a successful flash.

I was hoping I can flash recovery and then immediately reflash Slimkat from it (which includes TWRP, kernel & ROM).
OK, I'll give stock a go first. But only after I sort out Odin.
You're having that problem because recovery is busted. Flashing another custom recovery won't fix that. Only going back to stock which will give you a fresh stock recovery will fix the problem (and as I said in my PP, you might need to do a reset after).
I've given you the tools (Hopper's thread) to enable you to 'sort out Odin'. You need to pay more attention to what people have posted after you've asked for help.
Update: I am unable to get Odin to flash the phone with latest stock. I've been through Odin problems in the past, with 3 different Samsung models and was able to resolve them. Not this time it seems, it's stuck on starting flashing boot.img however I try. Looking at forum responses this often requires a hardware replacement (mobo/ flash chip).
However: I've noticed I can (kind of) enter recovery. If I keep the VolUp+Home pressed long enough, it will ultimately get me to the following screen:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
-- but it doesn't go any further, it just stays there. What's more it reboots within 5-10 minutes.
BUT!
When I connect the phone to PC, my Win7 says it installed 2x
Code:
"Linux File-CD Gadget USB Device"
It doesn't show up as a drive unfortunately.
If I do
Code:
adb devices
on my PC, it does detect it:
Code:
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
List of devices attached
0123456789ABCDEF recovery
I can't connect or do
Code:
adb shell
because I get:
Code:
- exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2) -
But I am able to do
Code:
adb pull /proc/cpuinfo
Not sure if partitions got mounted properly, especially the emmc sdcard but -- what's the easiest way to browse the filesystem via adb now and hopefully retrieve some data from the phone?
