Cracked the glass part of my screen, is it worth repairing? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know that these threads exist for other phones and such but couldn't find one for my s3 that fits the current timeline. I dropped my phone from my pocket while walking and only cracked the glass part of the screen. Touchscreen works fine, there aren't any damages done to the actual screen part, I believe only the gorilla glass is cracked. Service wants $100-$150 to repair it but judging by the current phones that are out there is it worth repairing it? I could sell the phone for the parts at around $200-$300 and add up money to buy something like a Z2. What are your thoughts about this?

[Q] Cracked SAmoled+Gorilla Glass

Hi guys,
I just dropped my vibrant from 3 feet high and gorilla glass had a crack and half of the screen doesnt work and half of it shows random colors. Other than that it seems fine. Does it happened to someone else? I thought gorilla glass is uncrackable and Samoled is so elastic and durable but it seems opposite.
Should I send it to SamsungUSA or just buy a complete digitizer+glass+Samoled kits from ebay around 129$? Which one will be cheaper because I am afraid Samsung will charge a lot for screen replacement?
If you can help me I really appreciate it,
Thanks
If you have the insurance it is 135.00 with tmo or whomever they subcontract the insurance to. Otherwise check Globaldirect for cost. It usually will be cheaper there. Also, be aware that some replacement kits are not amoled but LCD kit so read the fine print on that as well.
Good luck
thanks, i am probably gonna order from ebay and change it myself. Globaldirect has minimum order restriction so its not useful for me
Did you check with Samsung directly for your regular warranty? The way these things usually work is that the normal warranty covers it until the 1 year is up -- no deductible. Since it is supposedly Gorilla Glass they should cover the glass from damage too. Be really charming when talking with them. Call back until you get a representative in your country too (during the day is safest.)
Let me know so I have it for future reference.

that's a misconception abt gorilla glass. its stronger than regular glass. its scratch n crack resistant but not scratch n crack proof. oh and samsung DOES NOT distribute their samoled screens to 3rd parties. all those.sellers on ebay are.selling regular LCD screen replacements.

[Q] What part needs replaced?

I dropped my HTC Legend yesterday onto concrete, and now my screen is cracked. I've looked online to see if I could buy the part myself, and try and fix it myself as a local cell repair shop says it will cost 180$ to fix, for that price I'll just buy a brand new Legend and cut my losses with this one. Looking around online though, I'm unsure as to what I need to buy? I've found an LCD screen, or a digitizer... My touchscreen and all those functions work 100% all thats wrong is the glass is spiderwebbed pretty good. I'm thinking that I need the digitizer not the LCD screen? Or is there just a part thats just the glass? I'd post a picture of the phone, but I can't due to site restrictions.

Warning befor going case less

Well after having my z ultra for a month I decided to go nearly case less (have the Incipio Watson case) using a thin case, I managed to crack the glass over the screen in my pocket which renders the entire phone useless. I do realize that it was my fault for going without a case and not being extremely careful. But now that this has happened to me I want to let you guys know the after effects. Like I said I only cracked the top layer glass but due to design the touch sensitive portion also is damaged. They sandwiched the glass, digitizer, and lcd together as one unit with the digitizer glued directly to the glass so once cracked the entire phone has to be disassembled and glass, digitizer, and lcd has to be replaced as a assembly ($250us). This is not a cheap repair and I've found one aftermarket online repair shop that's charging $300us to fix with no guarantees. And they don't say whether it will still be water proof after repair. I called Sony before they announced the phone here and they told me due to the fact that it isn't offered here they would have to send the phone to the country of origin for repair and it could take a month or two before it returns. And they didn't have a firm cost of repair but $189 normal phone cost. I think due to the thinness of the phone made it extremely fragile with super thin glass (which is how I think they managed the use of metals as stylus) covering the screen. So I recommend getting protection that adds rigidity and screen protection or getting added warranty coverage to the phone to avoid my bad luck.
If something goes wrong with my ultra I will run it over with my car and use my home insurance. 100$ and i get a new one. Here in Sweden it's called "bad luck" insurance

I wish I had waited and got the lte version and insurance but it was looking like they weren't gonna release the beast for America. I hope now it'll be a quick turn around fix now tho. But considering getting the lte version with insurance.

Just to let you know, while looking on the brando site, I noticed they had Z ultra replacement screens for $150.... Don't know their quality, etc... but I did see them...
I only have a Skinomi clear skin on mine. Front pocket, back pocket daily phone. Even the hood of my car dropped on it while using it doing a repair. No issues here pretty tough. Although I was sure I cracked it after that incident.
Yeah, I'm on the same boat.. How tf did it break?

Had it in the pocket screen faced towards my leg in a squatted position (wasn't thinking and frustrated at the same time from work) and cracked it from pressure/flexing presumably since all cracks stem from single crack at edge. What's crazy is that it seems to still be cracking even though im not using it. Have pictures in tow.
Did you squat really low? or like sitting down position kind of squat? Did you feel the pressure on in your pocket?
I have the phone as well and I only have a gel case, but I'm always scared to sit down with it cause I feel a bit of pressure when I do.
I don't wear skinny jeans, just regular straight jeans.
just bought my 2 year insurance from sony.

[URGENT] need help fixing broken glass on my S3

i recently dropped my phone and it got a crack in the bottom right corner around the back button stretching up to the middle of the left hand side of the screen, and i need help repairing it.
Im not sure if i can just replace the glass myself or i need to replace the digitizer or any other parts as the screen and back button still work perfectly fine.
I'd also like to know whether this job is easy enough to do at home as i am on a low budget, however i dont have much experience fixing phones.
much appreciated if anyone can help me
Replace the screen assembly, glass plus digitiser and oled screen. Trying to unglue the glass is very hard and the heat can kill the phone.

Replacing the whole digitiser is a lot easier, but beware cheap(ish) ebay parts - I replaced my digitiser with an assembly from ebay, but the glass in the replacement broke very easily.... replaced it again and it's cracked again, without even having a hard knock. Nowehere near as sturdy as OEM parts. Screen still works so leaving it for now
Words of warning...
I attempted to replace the glass on my S3 after I dropped it. I have over 20 years experience as a computer engineer and access to loads of tools. I watched numerous YouTube videos on the process before I started yet still I managed to break the digitiser. In the end I bit the bullet and bought another brand new S3 for £200. The cheapo replacement glass I bought from eBay did not seem very sturdy either - I'm certain it's not gorilla glass. My advice would be to get it fixed professionally by someone who uses OEM parts but then again, how close in price would that be to a brand new phone?

Crack on glass

I assume my lovely daughter has dropped or knocked the tablet as I have a diagonal hairline crack across one corner. Doesn't affect use but its bugging the hell out of me!
So I understand to get it repaired is going to cost more than £300 (local shop). I could get a new one for £400! Or should I just sit on it (not literally) and wait for the S4 - missed MWC so expect after August now.
Even with this damage I'd expect to get over £150 for it on ebay so maybe not really worth doing anything.
Anyone else (UK) had a screen replaced?

When my son did this to his tablet I just put a screen protector over the screen and it was good as new. Obviously still cracked underneath.
its safer to put on a tempered glass protector and it take the bump.. than be penitent after the screen has cracked. also better to invest in a bumper cover. I learnt it the hard way with my Tab S 8".. spent INR 10k to get it repaired and another 2K for a book case. had i invested in a book case, i would have saved 8K!
Tab S3 has a hard case... bulky, but then i got big hands

I agree with a case but not a screen protector. Totally ruins the experience. I don't want to keep the screen in pristine condition for someone else's benefit. I want to experience a smooth silky touch screen for myself.
