[SOLVED][REQUEST] Ideas for solving locked bootloader soft-brick - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, Kyuubi10 here again.
Recently I had an issue with my nexus 9, which is becoming increasingly common.
Where one can permanently soft-brick their nexus, for lack of ticking the "Enable OEM unlock" button, then bootlooping their device while locking their bootloader, thus making it impossible to reflash a system image through fastboot.
If you're lucky enough to still be able to access your custom recovery your device is still salvageable, but if as me you were performing a factory reimage when you locked your bootloader chances are that you have gone back to stock recovery, and only after realised that your OS was bootlooping.
From reading about it, I found out that it was virtually unrecoverable, unless you managed to keep your custom recovery, by either flashing a new system or if your recovery refuses to flash new system you can use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/help/info-nexus-6-nexus-9-enable-oem-unlock-t3113539.
But in all of these cases you still need a custom recovery.
At the end most people gave up and either bought another device or used their warranty to replace their device (Which I am trying to attempt, if my warranty isn't completely voided.)
So, finally reaching the important point of this thread, I have had a couple ideas which could work to solve this issue but since I don't have enough knowledge I am unable to actually test the idea.
For the device to recognize the lock status of the device even without an OS present means that there must be a flag the bootloader reads. By reading further I found this. http://newandroidbook.com/Articles/Nexus9.html
This basecally explains that Nexus 9 has a partition called PST (Persist) whose only job is to provide the value of this flag. I was wondering whether it is possible by using Linux could get a more direct access to the partition and change its binary value to enable the "enable OEM unlock" variable (Described by fastboot as "Ability is 0").
I had this idea because one day when I bootlooped another device and ADB on windows failed to recognize the device I booted linux and used ADB from there. And the phone was reconized.
This works because Linux can view partitions with different filesystems, where as windowns can only see partitions which have been formatted into "Windows" partitions (e.g. FAT32, NTFS).
So in theory using a Linux OS to access the different partitions in Android should show up much more information, and give you better access. But apart from this I don't know much more. I will be testing this theory out in more detail. But I am challenging the more experienced contributors out there to help out in overcoming this issue!
Please, this is a real issue which is limiting newer nexus devices. If anyone has any new ideas please share by commenting, and lets help each other out to find a solution to this problem.

Yes, in fact I have the same exact link in the OP.
But unfortunately as I have described my case is quite unique in which I don't have a custom recovery. This in turn means I have no access to ADB because no partitions are mounted.... I'm stuck with using fastboot for now.

Unfortunately as described in my signature my N9 was stolen.
But I'll change the title of this thread to [SOLVED] so that others know where to find an answer.

Seriously, you are a lifesaver.
The simple fact that you can sideoad the preview and that it flashes system unconditionally saved my Nexus 9.
This infomation should be stickied because it is the only solution if you are stuck in between versions. I was on LMY48T and adb sideload of the correspondig OTA showed "unexpected content" (Error 7).
This allowed me to boot, and unlock OEM & bootloader.
Huge thanks!

WARNING: THESE FILES ARE BASED ON THE OXYGEN OS 2.1.1 FIRMWARE, PLEASE ANALYZE YOUR DEVINFO IF THE VERSION IS DIFFERENT TO MAKE SURE NOT BRICKING SOMETHING!
I have not upgraded my device to 2.1.2 yet because there have been some issues with the newest firmware.
Tested and confirmed working on:
OxygenOS 2.2.0 - thanks to @pryggi
OxygenOS 2.1.1
Hydrogen OS 1.2.0 - thanks to @fareed_xtreme
I looked at this thread, thanks to Naman Bhalla for this great work.
and found out that the file attached to this post is the answer to my problem, described in another thread.
After the whole day of work analyzing and dumping and saving via adb from my device to the pc and the other way around i finally did it.
On the frist screenshot is my situation before flashing the new devinfo, on the second after flashing the devinfo from the thread mentioned above.
By changing the bits with a Hex Editor of your choice, or by flashing the files below via dd:
Code:
dd bs=4096 of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/devinfo if=/sdcard/oneplus2-devinfo-factory.img
The output should look like the following:
Code:
0+1 records in
0+1 records out
1024 bytes transferred in 0.005 secs (204800 bytes/sec)
You can restore your OnePlus 2 to a factory state while still having root or unlock your phone again without having to wipe it! :highfive:

Thanks, I was waiting for this for securing my OPT. Has anyone tested, if it works also on OOS 2.2.0?
Just to clarify, the dd command should be executed in TWRP console?
Would be cool if someone could make an app for this like the Nexus devices have:

Hello pryggi,
It should also work on OOS 2.2.0, you could check that by dumping the partition (by reversing the dd command) like this:
Code:
dd bs=4096 if=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/devinfo of=/sdcard/oneplus2-devinfo-oos220.img
And looking at the file in the hex editor for differences or by posting it here and i can check it for you.
I have executed the dd command from ADB Shell with the Phone connected via wireless ADB.
You can also execute dd in the Android Terminal Emulator App.
Thanks for your reply. My device is already unlocked. As I don't have a computer with ADB/drivers at hand right now, I managed to run the dd command in Terminal Emulator app after elevating with su. Result is attached. Viewing it in hex seems to confirm, that at least the locking bit seems to be in the same position.

Thank you for the Dump, i can confirm that the bit is at the same position and the unlock bit is the same.
I compared the file attached at my first post with yours and they are identical ( see attachment, sorry its german, meaning is they are identical).
So by flashing the factory.img from my first post or unchecking OEM Unlock allowed in the developer Settings your device should be locked again and can be unlocked by flashing the unlock.img via dd in ADB or the Android Terminal Emulator within the Phone.
Thanks for the further explanation. I was just wondering about this OEM Unlocking switch in dev options. What would happen, if one would use dd and the factory image file to lock the bootloader and leave the OEM Unlocking switch still unlocked...
I also am interested if this type of locking-unlocking can be done in TWRP... If it can be done there, then it does not offer any benefits in security, if my logic is correct. Although, I might be drifting off topic here.

As i can remember i tried that too, by flashing the factory image partition via dd and leaving the switch on, the switch gets toggled off when rebooting, because the switch is just the representation of the unlocking bit in the partition. So when it is turned off, the software will set the bit to zero, means the device will get locked on reboot. Turning the switch on will not override the bit and the device can boot unlocked and the switch will stay on.
It is hard to explain
Your Idea about doing the same thing in TWRP since the ADB is available there is interesting.
I think the problem here is, that once you onlock and flash a custom recovery via fastboot, and relock the device, you already tampered with it, and twrp does provide much more options than the stock recovery image (ADB commands, ...).
So the problem here lies in flashing twrp.
I solved this problem by keeping the stock recovery and locking the device via the image file.
Once i want to use twrp, i unlock the phone by using the unlock.img and use "fastboot boot twrp.img" to boot twrp to backup my device or some other action.
I know that this means if my device gets bricked in this locked state with stock recovery i will have to unlock it normally, but before making any important changes to my software i always unlock my device first in case something goes wrong and with the stock recovery i could not even flash anything so making huge software changes requires me to unlock my device and boot twrp
Hope that this post helps somehow

It is also possible that OnePlus changes the layout of that partition in one of the upcoming updates/releases and that is why it is still mentioned in the first post, thank you anyway.
@thedropdead I've a question: I should use the "modified" devinfo.img AFTER I go back to stock, if I want to unlock my phone without wiping data, right ? So I go back to stock, flash in fastboot or in terminal emulator the .img, and that's good ? I'me unlocked without data wiped ?

That should be the plan if i have understood everything right.
So you are on the custom ROM, want to go back to the stock ROM?
If that is the case i do not see why you should want to flash any image.
You can use TWRP to wipe and then flash the stock ROM, your phone should still be unlocked right?
Please someone correct me if i am wrong.
It would be great if you could tell me what you are trying to achieve.
The unlock image had the purpose to help someone unlock their device if they have a rooted device but have locked it after flashing everything for security reasons.

Okay thanks for the clarification.
In the Case of using some unbrick Tool and thus resetting everything including recovery to stock your phone should lock on the first stock boot.
Once it is locked and you do not have root, which would be the case, you have no possibility to flash the img via fastboot or the emulator.
so in conclusion you are better off with wiping and flashing via twrp so you can still flash something if anything goes wrong
It works on OxygenOS 3.0.2 too. I edit the same location using a HEX Editor. And everything is fine.
Hey guys, sounds like this is exactly what I've been looking for. Thanks for figuring this out.
But, I'm a bit of a noob, so can you break it down into like a hundred very clear steps?

Have TWRP but not root HDX 8.9 3rd gen

I got a new Motherboard and daughterboard in my HDX Apollo. I was able to get TWRP on it, but it keeps saying i dont appear to have root. I tried installing the latest supersu but it apparently didnt work. Anyway, i have realized that i just keep getting myself into trouble playing with root. All i want is to get my 3rd gen back to 4.5.5.1 fire os and wait for the fire os 5 update for it(hopefully) Any help on how i can do that? Ive tried downloading the latest Kindle update for apollo, renaming the .bin to update.zip and transferring it over and installing it but it never boots further than the 'kindle' screen.
Thanks for your help, sorry to be a pain
If you're on Fire OS 4.x you don't have TWRP, but Safestrap v4. After what you've done, do you still have access to Safestrap? Installing an amazon update with Safestrap installed, or even just rooted could easily mess up the device, i.e. brick it.
I don't think it's fire os 4x then. It does boot into the twrp interface and is fully functional but when you go to reboot into a different recovery it says something like "it appears you do not have root. Would you like to install supersu?" Even if I say yes it acts like it installs but apparently doesn't. I can post pics later

- how did you "install" TWRP (method)?
- how are you accessing TWRP - just pressing the power button or some key combination (yes, it's important)?
- does a graphic vaguely resembling Frankenstein appear when you power up the device?

I installed TWRP using the method instructed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/kin...-to-unbrick-kindle-fire-hdx-firmware-t3277197
When i want to get to TWRP i press and hold Power + Vol UP until it rebootes into the Teamwin screen and TWRP. It is version 2.8.7.0 now(the instructions got 2.8.5.0 installed then i upgraded)
I dont remember what the graphic looked like when booting into TWRP but i know it said TeamWin. I can check when i get it charged back up enough to turn on. Ive had it sitting unplugged for days and the battery ran dead. I hope this is enough info to help get me pointed in the right direction. Thanks!
Ok, if it's the real TWRP which it seems to be, Safestrap has no TeamWin logo at boot, I'd suggest you leave it be. Currently you can use all available ROMs, so if there'll be a future version of Fire OS you could use a TWRP flashable version of it. I doubt there will be a Fire OS 5 update for the "old" Thor/Apollo line though.
You would destroy the possibilities you currently have by updating to Fire OS 4.5.5.1.
Meanwhile you can unlock your bootloader (if you haven't already), and update TWRP to 3.0.0-1 (requires unlocked bootloader).
Don't I need root though? How can I unlock my bootloader from the stage I'm at now? I'm just a bit afraid of proceeding in case I brick it again

There's no risk in unlocking, the bootloader either unlocks or it errors/fails. Try the one-click-solution first (might require the PDANet drivers). It's recommended to update the bootloader to 3.2.3.2 (do it only, if the unlock worked ok).
TWRP can be updated from TWRP itself, so I'd recommend doing it that way. Just be sure to flash the TWRP image to the recovery partition.

Lack of a functioning ROM could prove problematic if ADB is not enabled. I do not recall if the version of TWRP you installed provides native support for MTP which is essential for moving files onto the device. You may need to go the manual route to unlock bootloader which still requires tethered access but only at the fastboot level.

Just curious on one thing. Whenever i see a ROM to download it says i need to unlock the bootloader and have root before i can do that. In MY case i do NOT have either, yet i was able to flash a new recovery(TWRP) How is this possible? How would i go about installing a new ROM or unlocking the bootloader?
Is there a way to flash the stock recovery back so i can reinstall fireOS and start from scratch?
Is there a way to tell what bootloader i have from within TWRP?
I realize i probably should have done a little more reading before i started messing with it :/ I do appreciate all the help you have been able to provide so far!

I would be happy just going straight back to full fire os - Stock EVERYTHING and not even worrying about running another OS. I just want to have a usable tablet again!

Unlock bootloader, Asus ZenFone 3 ultra zu680kl

There is tool from Asus this month to unlock the bootloader. You should know that you lose the guarantee and may no longer receive official updates. After you install the apk and restart the phone, all data on the internal memory will be deleted.
Whoa! the unlock tool is out!
Is there any chance someone can make a root guide? I really want to buy Zenfone 3 Ultra but I wouldn't do it without root method out there. Any help is appreciated.
Were waiting on a dev to compile TWRP for us then we can get root
Trying to root ZU680KL
Hi!
I have unlocked my ZU680KL with the Asus unlock tool. Bootloader shows 'unlocked'.
Then I unpacked the stock boot.img (from WW_13.6.15.21_20161215, this what I have installed) and using Vim I set:*ro.secure=0, ro.adb.secure=0, and*ro.debuggable=1 in default.prop.
Repacked the new boot.img and flashed it with 'fastboot flash boot new-boot.img'.
'adb shell getprop' indicates that the new setting was applied.
Yet in the stock recovery mode I cannot install SuperSU-v2.79.zip and no adb devices are seen in recovery mode.
What else is needed? Do I have to edit something in the stock recovery or must wait for custom TWRP?
I was following the basic instructions found here:
https://machiry.wordpress.com/2012/10/26/getting-root-access-on-android-the-actual-way/
iirc, there's already a thread going where both root & TWRP have been successfully loaded

when the ultra 3 first came out, many suggested waiting for a boot loader unlocker, & not updating any Android versions, because an unlock program might not work on subsequent Android versions. Is that the case? ... or does the unlocker work on the newest Android version too.
Thanks
.
The official download link is
http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/ZenFone/ZU680KL/ZU680KL_SIGNED_Android_M_UnlockTool_2017_0222.zip
Available from page:
https://www.asus.com/us/supportonly/Zenfone3 Ultra(ZU680KL)/HelpDesk_Download/
I have just downloaded the zip, made the APK and installed it on my Zenfone 3 Ultra.
When I run the app, after clicking all the "are you sure..." acknowledgements, the app does not succeed in unlocking the bootloader. The error message indicates an unknown or perhaps network error, and suggests I "try again later..."
Running WW_14.1010.1804.75_20180612
Anybody else seeing this?
Ideas??
Reading on the ASUS blogs, they indicate it isn't supported anymore (no surprise), but shouldn't it still work??

Note the links above no longer work. Yes, you can get to the page, but the unlocker isn't there any more.

Does anybody know which version(s) of the stock ROM this works with? I've tried a couple, and all of them just yield the "unknown error" when running the unlocker.
If you know of a stock ROM version this works with, please post a URL for where I can find it (as it's proven really hard to find specific versions...)
Thanks in advance.
agree it no longer works. getting the unknown error...wait message that everyone else is getting. there are other XDA threads that indicate the same.
Keeping bootloader locked. Used ADB to install full root with Magisk and Recovery with TWRP. Phone is working fine and even the SafetyNet checks pass as well. Debloated with ADB App Control program (paid for full version).

Hello. I can confirm that on this phone TWRP can be flashed WITHOUT unlocking the bootloader, since that seems not to be an option anymore (since the official unlock tool doesn't work anymore and neither are the usual commands for unlock).
Indeed it is weird that we can install a custom recovery and root with the locked bootloader but i've done it yesterday and there is no problem. My bootloader is locked, I have TWRP installed and root by Magisk latest.
You just need to boot into fastboot mode (press volume up and power at the same time), connect your phone to PC, go into where you have stored your adb and fastboot folder and in that folder open a CMD prompt and enter the command "fastboot flash recovery" and copy the name of the TWRP for our device after "recovery". And press enter. Then you disconnect from PC and navigate in the fastboot menu to the section "recovery" and press power button to boot into TWRP.
After that you can flash latest Magisk zip from the "install" section in TWRP and there you go, you have root.
And the bootloader will still remain locked, hence the safetynet will pass without any problems (play store certified).

It's what I've been saying and what I posted originally. I posted to help others out. I don't have to argue with users here that say it can't be done. I did it and mine is still working 100% correctly. I stand by what I said originally and what you just posted. And the comment that I was lucky is ludicrous. Luck has nothing to do with it.

Yup. It's not a matter of luck. It just can be done without unlocking bootloader on this phone. I can't explain why, because on the majority of phones you can't do anything without unlocking the bootloader. Although an explanation could be the lack of server maintenance from Asus side (since the problem with the unlock tool seems to be from their servers) for this phone. But yeah, you can have TWRP and root on this phone with the bootloader locked. That is a fact.
PS: I'm running the latest official firmware (.75) from Asus.

Ditto. Running 1804.75_20180612 official. Also running and keeping Magisk at 23.0 to retain safety check functions. Magisk 24 removes that, but you can reinstall back to 23.0 without any issues and just ignore the updates.

You can install Magisk 24 without any problems. For me it doesn't break safetynet and play store says "certified". Even without enabling zigisk.

Messi got you covered.
Personally I would recommend against rooting right now. There isn't much to be done with the Aristo at this point in time except to make backups of your system. Most you'll end up doing is learning a few things about why mixing system based and systemless mods can lead to pretty unpredictable results.

This is exactly what I've wanted to do - preferably by having direct rw access to the flash, like I did on my old phone. Unfortunately the only viable custom recovery procedure right now (messi2050's) involves wiping the userdata partition (unless you somehow happen to have an unlocked bootloader). To make matters worse the userdata partition is encrypted AFAIK. Surely the keys are stored on the phone somewhere but there wouldn't be a way to get them without some exploit, and I don't know if this phone is popular enough for someone to bother researching and publishing an exploit.
There was some progress here (github.com/Lekensteyn/lglaf) on reversing and exploiting LG's LAF protocol in their recovery OS, but it hasn't been updated for more than a year now. If anyone wants to play around with that code, be sure to read this issue (github.com/Lekensteyn/lglaf/issues/7) which has ongoing attempts at reversing LAF's current auth methods. I don't have the time right now to dive into this unfortunately.

Power your phone off.
Hold VOL DOWN WHILE PLUGGING DEVICE INTO COMPUTER WITH USB - this will bring it to the fastboot screen. If you have all drivers installed then you can simply open a cmd window and type "fastboot oem unlock" - which should unlock the bootloader - if all drivers are installed. Then continue with the tutorial as usual.
Is root worth it
So, I have an LG ms210 (Lg Aristo) that I've own for a little over 3 months now, but i have been experiencing this issue since about 1 week into ownership. The phone seams to have a RAM leak or something similar as about every hour it slows down substantially, usually to the point of freezing, or crashing all together and restarting on its own, even if not being touched since I power it on. Ive been thinking about rooting it to debloat, but im not sure if it will help, or if i should just invest in a new handset. I have since factory reset it, deleting more high-resource apps, and leaving it bare-bones system apps and nothing else, but the problem still persists. The carrier i MetroPCS if thats a factor, but i dont see why it would be. Any thoughts?

If you still have trouble reaching recovery after this, either download an advanced shutdown prompt from the market. (There's one literally called advanced reboot) or you can download a terminal emulator app and use the reboot recovery command with root.

I did that already, im trying to get xposed up and running but my model #lvl3 doesnt match what is in the terminal in twrp. I still get a weird error ph4u
Most likely shows as the lg stylo 2 plus as I guess your using the lineage backup. So just use the model of the lg stylo 2 in terminal? Guessing as I don't use xposed. What do you use xposed for?
To get it running on the aristo is to either edit build prop values to match the ms210 model, or remove the device requirements from xposed's update binary.
failed remote cannot flash this partition in unlocked state.
Anyone?
can some walk me thru this idk what im doing wrong but i go into adb i reboot bootloader and when i try to fastboot oem unlock it says device not found what am i doing wrong?
question
does this root works for lg ms210 security patch level jan 1 2018?
I believe the root is just twrp so it should work fine. Just update first then follow the steps for flashing twrp and the most recent magisk and probably dm verity thing. If something fails it can be eaily reflashed with the original firmware with correct software and the firmware image/kdz.
Edit: try to reinstall the lg drivers? Also a try a tool called minimal adb and fastboot here
Help. It just staus on "" waiting for device " with oem unlock step

[TOOL/UTILITY] Script to fix bootlooping Nexus 6P / Nexus 5X for Android O and lower

Script to fix the Nexus 6P / Nexus 5X Bootloop problem
Credits
99% credit goes to @squabbi for teaching how to patch files yourself and @XCnathan32 for discovering the fix itself.
1% for me for making the script .
DISCLAIMER
THIS PROCESS WIPES ALL YOUR DATA (unless your bootloader is already unlocked) AND PROBABLY YOUR WARRANTY TOO! USE WITH CAUTION! I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BRICK YOUR PHONE!
THIS PROCESS WILL MAKE YOUR PHONE SLOWER (6P 2 times slower, 5X 1.5 times slower)! PLEASE USE ONLY AS A LAST RESORT!
PLEASE CONTACT YOUR WARRANTY TO TRY AND GET A REPLACEMENT BEFORE PROCEEDING!
What does the fix do?
The problem with those phones are the cores of the Cortex A57, and they need to be disabled.
What should you do?
Before proceeding, make sure you have OEM Unlocking enabled on your device, or the flashing won't work!
1. Download the zip below
2. Extract the zip
3. Extract the boot.img from the image you've downloaded (the script explains how to do it if you don't know how) to the folder you've downloaded
4. Open "Script.bat"
You should also download a factory image from this link (unless you live in Japan, don't download the Softbank versions, and unless you live in Australia, don't download the Telstra versions):
6P - https://developers.google.com/android/images#angler
5X - https://developers.google.com/android/images#bullhead
The script itself was not tested, but the method did work on my 5X so it should work.
If you have any requests, you can comment them here, and maybe I'll add them. One day.
I do plan on adding TWRP and Elemental X patching one day, and if there will be many requests that day will come earlier.

Hi,
Thanks for this method, massively useful for someone who doesn't know what he's doing. I've managed to get past the OEM Unlocking but once I run the script and get passed the prerequisite steps I came to a halt at the Flashing. It just gets stuck at "Waiting for any device". Have I missed something here?
Running ".\fastboot devices" brings up my device, so it is connected.

I spent hours this weekend trying to get mine to work too. I was getting some DLL errors but I just made sure to install the system wide adb/fastboot/drivers (instead of running powershell/Cmd from a specific location). I didn't have to use the .\ prefix and it fixed my DLL errors. Maybe worth looking into for your situation. Sorry I don't have a link handy for the system wide fastboot install, but I definitely got linked from somewhere in XDA to a youtube tutorial.

nevermind, turns out my bootloader is OEM locked so this wouldn't do anything for me until that's dealt with
my first time ever flashing anything, only because i'm being forced to due to Huawei's incompetency, so I'm figuring out a lot of things along the way
at the moment, I just tried the trick to heat the phone up using a hair dryer to force it to use fewer cores just to access developer settings; no luck and still looping
Thank you for the script! I followed the instructions for my Nexus 6P, but after running the script, my phone gets stuck at the boot screen (the Google logo in the center and unlock icon at the bottom of the screen). It's been sitting like that for a few hours now lol.
To confirm, I downloaded the factory image for my 6P, extracted the boot.img from the image-angler-opm5.171019.019.zip file into the script's folder. My phone has TWRP flashed, bootloader unlocked.
Is there anything else I could do to save my phone?

Hi there
thanks you for help.
I've tested the script with android 7 - 48 c boot file and 8: OPM5.171019.019 boot files. and can't boot phone successfully. I'm used the android kitchen and no success.
My friend has a 5x which fixed with twrp. I was tested this before and I tested the way with him again and we could not fix again.
I think our problem is different, As my 6p sticks on google logo and reboots continuously but his phone sticks on colorful dots. He could boot to recovery mode after using twrp but my device does not enter recovery mode.
I have two question if any body can help.
1. if any one has successful boot please tell the version of OS and twrp that flashed successfully
2. Is there any debug test finding true reason of boot up problem.
thanks

Yes because unlocking bootloader and flashing un-stock images voids warranty, so you should clean everything you can and stock it back and tell them that it never happened.
