From 5.1.1 to 4.4 so you can root - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

You do not need root to do this. This will wipe your device, back it up if you care. When I truly thought about it, I really didn't give a hoot about a backup. Contacts are stored on my SIM.
This is a guide to help you get from 5.1.1 on a g900t to 4.4 so you can get your root on. It is important to note that you have to downgrade and it is even more important to note that you can brick your device and you assume all responsibility for actions you take.
(If you truly like 5.1.1 and custom kernels, be sure to stop here and go to this post instead -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=61877146 )
I wanted to root my S5 and had no idea how to do that. Well duh, you pull up youtube and look for the guy with the most trusting voice, good instructions, and more likes than dislikes and root your 5.1.1 right? Nah, that bricked my phone. Then I actually had to learn about my device, others like it and spent a good 4 hours meticulously fixing my device.
Now, installing root will trigger knox but I believe downgrading to 4.4 from 5.1.1 may not, but I cannot be 100% sure since I already triggered knox thanks to Mr Youtube bricking my phone.
Once you are on 4.4 you can root your phone using a ton of guides all over the place. For someone new to rooting a samsung device your google searches may be something like "S5 root" and eventually evolve to "S5 root g900t lollipop 5.1.1" and you will get nothing, spam or people asking the same thing with others saying "You can't do that". I didn't care about 5.1.1, I hated it in fact, so these comments saying "no you can't" kinda pissed me off.
Items you will need that I will link you to ->
Odin
Android 4.4 image
Optional: Android 5.1.1 image (in case things get scary and you want to revert)
Let's Start ::
1. Download odin from your favorite source (Sorry, there seems to be too many weird links on google for this, but here is a forum post on this website -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2711451 ) and I am not comfortable hosting it.
2. Download Android 4.4 image, sources for this ->
Sammobile http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G900T/
Alternative: http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=SM-G900T
These sites are so damn slow. I got the image uploading to Mega atm and will update this post with a Mega link when they finish.
Optional: Download Android 5.1.1 image (ending in FOG6) so you can revert if needed, sources for this ->
Sammobile http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G900T/
Alternative: http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=SM-G900T
These sites are so damn slow. I got the image uploading to Mega atm and will update this post with a Mega link when they finish.
3. Grab your phone and turn it off.
4. Hold in the Volume Down button, the Home button and then hold down the Power button until you see a message telling you that you are going to break your phone and void your warranty. Confirm you wish to break all the things by pressing the Volume Up button.
5. Plug in your phone to your computer and open up Odin. In Odin you will see a bunch of blank boxes and hopefully one of them on the ID:COM section is blue which indicates your device is plugged in. If you see the blue box showing connected, you can continue.
6. Click Options and make sure the only 2 boxes checked are Auto-Reboot and F. Reset Time. In the section to the right (Files [Downloaded]), check the second checkbox next to "AP". Click the text labeled "AP" and select the 4.4 android image you downloaded already. The program may sort of freeze up but just wait for a few seconds and let it clear up.
(You should read the rest of these steps entirely before continuing to follow).
7. Click the start button at the bottom and wait for it to finish. You want to catch the next reboot fast so you can enter into recovery otherwise you have a sweet softbrick boot loop. If so it is no big deal, yank out the battery because you need to clear some cache and factory reset.
8. When the reboot is coming back up, quickly hold in Volume Up, Home Button and Power Button to get into androids default recovery. Once you see blue letters at the top left "Recovery Booting" you can let go of the button combination.

9. Go down to the option to "wipe cache partition" using the volume keys and use the power button to select it.
10. Go down to the selection "wipe data/factory reset" using the volume keys and use the power button to select it..
11. Check the section at the top "reboot system now" using the volume keys and use the power button to select it.
12. Give it a little bit of time (2 minutes max) to get passed the tmobile carrier screen and you should see the new device setup screen. YAY you downgraded to 4.4 and now all those wonderful guides on rooting your S5 become relevant to you at last!
If you get nervous and want to chop back to 5.1.1 follow the exact same instructions but select the 5.1.1 android image instead of the 4.4 one.
I hope this helps someone new to this that is on 5.1.1 and seeing a lack of resources on getting to root and not caring about 5.1.1 in general. I actually think you can get all the features of 5.1.1 through custom roms once you get back to 4.4.
If I am missing something, left something out or mistyped something please let me know.
Rooting the S5 is really up to you. Some people swear by it, but if I can be honest, once I had it done on my phone I was severely disappointed (and felt regret) in the lackluster apps and things you can do. The best reason to root for me was to control permissions (which is a paranoia game you start to play with your apps) and freeze system apps that came with my device. Freezing the silly ass software update that kept bugging me to update was fantastic as well as the oogle of google apps I will never ever use like Google Music and TV, My Magazine, etc.

That is a pretty cool article, but seems really geared towards people who already know what to do a little bit though right? This definitely did not pop up on any google search, but if it did at the time when I knew zero about rooting, I would have clicked away if I can be honest. Sorry man.

Not really. Just about an hour quicker and not losing everything.

I was new to Android too with this phone about a month ago.. I would suggest playing around with it first, figuring out how you like your widgets laid out, what your settings for all your apps should be, etc, before you consider rooting/flashing.. Initially the battery may seem weak, but give it time to stabilize (and also your usage will go down once the newness wears out).. Through various posts you will figure out what apps are good, which ones drain your battery, and which ROM fits your need.. I'm on unnamed ROM and love it.. Let me know if I can help with anything in specific!

Check out the terms and acronyms link in my signature, so you have some basic level of understanding the terminology in the posts.
Look for some apps that interest you in the Android Market, just to start getting a feel for all the things your phone can do with applications...
Decide where to start - such as getting apps that need root level permissions (like Titanium Backup), and how to root on your phone. Or do you want to customize how your phone looks? See what you have available on your phone first, see what you like (or what annoys you!) and then how to change it. Basically get some starting goals.
Start looking up applicable posts, such as how to flash a custom ROM using Odin, customizations such as ADW.Launcher, etc. Be prepared for a lot of reading, and following instructions to the letter!
...(?)
Profit!
Seriously though, the phone has a huge amount of potential ... you have to figure out what you want to do. Chances are someone has posted a guide to do it (or someone helpful will reply) -- but it's up to you to decide what you want.
Your best bet is to read...a lot. Start here and here. And if you have questions about things, I suggest asking via IRC. People get pissed when the forum gets cluttered up. Best of luck to you.

Ok. here is the easy way to start your i777 SGS2 adventure
If you plan on flashing a custom rom you will not need to root your phone because all of the custom
roms here in XDA forums are pre-rooted.
Here is the best and easiest way to flash/install a custom rom and backup your original stock rom.
First you need to install the Samsung USB drivers into windows.
(Be sure to use the original Samsung USB cable for trouble-free operation)
Here is the link for the Samsung Unified USB Driver: http://api.viglink.com/api/click?for...13196871580881
After installing the usb driver above restart windows.
Now is a good time to download a custom rom of your choice, there are about 5 or 6 you can choose from.
I would suggest to download the "UnNamed" custom rom which can be found here: update-unnamed-v1.1.0-full.zip
It is currently the best and most reliable full featured custom rom you can find for our i777 phone.
After you have downloaded a custom rom you need to copy it to your phone's internal sdcard.
To copy the rom zipfile to your phone you need to go into the settings of the phone:
settings>applications>development>usb debugging and make sure that the "USB debugging" is disabled.
Connect the usb cable from computer to the phone and open "Computer" from the start menu in windows &
there you will find a "SGH-I777" drive icon.
Open it and you will see 2 icons, PHONE and CARD, copy the custom rom zipfile you downloaded into the
PHONE drive. (you will only see CARD if you have an external micro sdcard in the phone)
Now you need to download these two files below.
SGH-I777_ClockworkMod-Recovery_5.0.2.3.tar kernel: http://www.multiupload.com/QQKN7NJAFT
Odin3_v1.83.exe Windows Executable: http://hotfile.com/get/116095613/4ea...din3_v1.83.exe
Copy both of these files into a new folder on your desktop.
Open Odin3 in your new folder & select the PDA button & select the "SGH-I777_ClockworkMod-Recovery_5.0.2.3.tar" file.
Once this is done press the volume up & volume down buttons at the same time & hold them pressed
until you plug the usb cable from computer to the phone & you see the triangle on the phone's screen
and the "COM:XX" box in Odin3 light up yellow.
Then click the START button in Odin3 to start the kernel flash.
After successfully flashing you will see the blue CWM Recovery menu of options.
Select "Reboot System" from the menu.
After the phone reboots go back to settings and enable the usb debugging & power down the phone.
Now press & hold both volume buttons & press and hold the power button at the same time until you
see the SAMSUNG text on screen then let go of power button first then let go of the volume buttons.
Wait for the blue CWM menu then select "backup/recovery" then select "backup".
The phone will start backing up your stock rom at this point.
Once it gets done backing up your stock rom you can flash the custom rom.
To flash your custom rom select "Wipe data/Factory reset" from the menu.
Then select "Install zip from sdcard" & select the custom rom zipfile which
you have copied to your phone.
Once it gets done flashing & installing select "reboot system".
Using the blue clockworkmod recovery menu:
HOME softkey = selects.
BACK softkey = go back.
Volume Up/Volume Down = scroll up & down.
Now you are ready to use the phone. (at last!!!)

Remember if a NOOB can understand this then ANYONE can! - (that means you!)

Well..Downloading it for almost a half hour..the speed is low
Don't know if I should flash it through recovery or odin like the instructions said.
Looks like an uglier version of MIUI ^^
It flashes just fine through cwm. Runs great if a little slow. The animations when opening and closing apps are nice.
Before you flash however be sure to set your sim pin lock as off in the settings of your current ROM. As once you boot in to smartisan it will not ask you for a pin and you will have no phone connection and you sim will remain locked .
I like this ROM but there appears to be no way to change wall paper on home screen and it also appears not to be compatible with widgets.

chinese and english. Rom is 4.2.2, you don't have the "desktop" , just the icon mesh, most parts that should be fast are slow^slow^slow
For example, opening dialer is turbo fast, closing it is ultra slow
either cm based or just cm apps in it. Wiped it just now.
Better than MIUI, looks like iOS <3
Can I get all languages with Languags Enabler ?
Interessante
I downloaded the rom, installed, not as changing the edioma being English or Chinese, after all is not rooted, not the root supote, versdão beta, but future versions will support the root, is a bit slow, but it promises to be a rom interesting, will not desktop because the icons on the screen is not large distributed in bars, version 4.2.2 even being a pre-alpha cool, maybe I will follow this journey. Hugs!!

I installed it, and I must admit: I´m amazed, it is a very cool rom! I first thought via the videos: Oh, ok, just a luncher and boring... but wow. I was wrong. Really, it is amazing. And for a pre alpha it is very imprssive! Whoever codes this must a be a genius to get something like that with that stability and performance (Antutu 15800) and call it pre alpha. Others would call it beta. :good:

What about the music player? Same or different
I really hope that version 5.0 only comes to Asian phones (if at all and at most) because that's what typically people from there like. But in my opinion, the new style just moves further away from stock Android look and closer to iOS. The skin looks "heavy" and "bloat -ish". The notification toggles UI got worse and the rounded notifications is not useful. It's like a bit more childish theme. Would be nicer if ZTE actually let us and not them customize the notification toggles. They literally removed one of Android Nougat's offered feature here: customized toggles and hidden menu.
this method is working on G model too.
Installed and followed the instructions to the tee. I have the U variant. Phone is not booting into system, recovery or EDL mode. When trying to power on the phone it vibrates and light blinks twice. Same when trying to boot into recovery.
EDIT: I fixed my problem. It just isnt booting after following the steps tho.

Yeah, guess we'll have to wait and hope MiFavor 5 officially comes to the U version. After many months of using custom ROMs, I came back to plain stock + root and realized how much I missed it. Stock ROM with Nova Launcher isn't that bad. I mean without Xposed, not THAT much you can do on custom ROMs anyway, with the exception of a few minor tweaks here and there. At least not with what I want.
@WesTD do me a favor, please. Create another backup and include system, data and boot. I'm going to make a flashable zip.

That is good news! In this case I welcome functions over style as long as the style doesn't restrict them.

It worked on my 2017U. Instead of installing the Google Play Services linked in the OP, I installed it from apkmirror, along with Google Play Store. Worked perfectly. One thing I would like to add, if you are being prompted for a password upon startup, go to TWRP and perform a factory reset. I was and that's what worked for me.
Does Magisk work on this?
It looks like an update came out

[Q] Anyone delt with Samsung 5 Series Chromebook Model xe500c21? Need to Reset / Format somehow.
Chromebook is from 2011-2012. I aquired 15 of these units from an auction. All ex units from a local school. I was told all were removed from the Admin System. Yet when I log in i get the login screen with the icon and password box. So its obvious user accounts are still on there and i need to reset the chromebooks somehow. I went to add user i believe it was on the bottom bar and it took me to a google login screen (similar to FRP) asking for username @"school".k12."state".us and password. At the top it says "Enterprise Enrollment Managed by "school".k12."state".us". I have not been able to make it back to the original screen. I tried flipping the dip switch on the side to enable developer mode and it says it was disabled my Admin. Most likely so the kids wouldn't hack it. There is no options for me except a water down Accessibility Menu, Sound, Wifi and Shut Down.
I have tried esc + refresh key on the original login screen and also shift + ctrl + alt + r? i think it was. Neither worked. I have also read that there is a read/write screw that needs to be removed. I am still researching but have yet to find the best working method to bypass and reset these.
I plan on putting Android on a few if possible. On the others I plan on putting Chrome OS back on and Windows 10 on (slimmed down version since SSD on these are only 16GB).
I would appreciate any help anyone can provide.
Thanks,
phonecapone

Doesn't look like there is a read/write screw on this model. As well I have not successfully been able to enter developer mode. Model seems to be watered down. I had an RMA with Samsung but since 12 out of the 17 have no warranty anymore they want to charge for fixing them. I did hear from a moderator on samsung.com that there is supposedly a specific Chrome OS version that will work on this. Awaiting an answer back.
I have tried everything known to man and nothing works. My last and what should have been my first options are to contact Googles Support dept through samsung and also the school systems IT Dept to get the MAC and domain removed. Deprovisioned basically.
if you've still got these chromebooks around you might want to give this a try. i just got my xe500c21 a few days ago with an enterprise account lock. After long night of tedious trial and error i am officially logged into the developer console with root permissions. Keep in mind that i haven't *entirely* bypassed the enterprise lock, but now that i have root access it will be trivial... lmk if you need details....
the http://mychromehome.blogspot.com/2014/07/download-chromebook-recovery-image.html
this site has a ton of chromebook images you can download directly from google servers. if you check the file names for our device, you'll notice the 4 variables are: 3g, wifi, US, and non-US.
download whichever firmware *does not* match your current configuration, unzip it, and flash it to a usb using win32 Disk Imager.
https://ayera.dl.sourceforge.net/project/win32diskimager/Archive/win32diskimager-1.0.0-install.exe
make sure youve unzipped the .bin file and click the dropdown box to change "img files" to all. select your .bin file and click write. once its done toggle the dev mode switch to on and then reboot to recovery insert the usb. after it finishes you'll notice a new splash screen, then it'll boot up.
at this point if you get online and try to continue you'll still see the enterprise lock, but fear not. toggle the dev mode switch back to off and the reboot. it'll do the wipe and restart, then from the main screen flip the switch one last time to on, then reboot. now youll see an unfamiliar dialog warning you about the dangers of dev mode. proceed and wait for the chromebook to reboot. it took mine about 6 minutes so be patient.
once it reboots you can enter the terminal by pressing ctr + alt + --> (3rd key from left on top row)
login with username chronos
sudo -i
enjoy

Thanks a ton for that information. It has gave me some ideas and i'm sure will help others in a similar situation. Unfortunately I sold all ~20 something of mine and only have 3-4 parts machines left. All need screens and or are still locked. I managed to get all mine unlocked by calling the school district and having their IT guy deprovision all of mine but a couple.
The only chromebook I have left now is a 13 series? i think it is. Its put away else id take a look at it right now. It supposedly has no issues with dev mode which is why i kept it so i can learn everything about chromebooks then sell it off as im not the biggest fan of them personally. Have too many toys too. ha
Thanks for the advice, ill pass it along to a buddy who is doing some dev on chromebooks right now.

Android POS machine H10-1 made by Citaq? Can I reuse it for personal touch tablet?

Hey All
Its been a while since I got to play with anything these days but I recently found one of these POS 10in touchscreen units in the dumpster and it fires up into a menu running android. So I was hoping I could reflash this and use it like a tablet given it's also got a small thermal printer in it, so maybe try and save it from e-waste
I searched online for more details and came across this HERE which is identical to what I have so hoping I can root it and flash it with a clean android?
I would love to repurposed this to use as a touch screen tablet or similar, since it's got a GSM module and can take an SDCard too as I opened it up and took some pictures and I managed to get it in a recovery mode as well - from the PIX its using a rockchip RK3368

I am not sure if the mini usb port is a OTG port to try and use ADB but I have not been able to do much with it and hoping someone can guide me through to possibly a reflash or ways to unlook root and add in another bootloader/rom
I've downloaded the files from citaq website but so far not been successful to do much with it, has anyone played with these and turned them into something more practical for the home?
Here's hoping for some tips - Apology if this is in the wrong section, move as needed :good:

Device actually is running Android 5.1.1. It seems it has only 1GB RAM what is far too little to run a full fledged Android.
As long as you don't replace device's Stock Recovery by TWRP or similar recoveries, after a successful rooting don't install Magisk and/or Xposed Framework, you're on the safe side to play with, IMHO.
As 1st step check whether device is accessable by means of both ADB and Fastboot.

Hey, Thanks for chiming in!
So in order to get ADB and or Fastboot its suggested to enable USB debugging in the device system settings, but I am not sure on how to do this, would it be safe to assume this is already USB debug is already enabled?
Could I back up the original stock recovery
I'm a little green on the whole process hence looking thought I'd ask here, I don't think I even have an OTG cable handy
I will see if I can load ADB on a windows box and try and talk to this unit
Cheers
Kosti
@Kostiz
An OTG-cable isn't needed, because the recovery menu
doesn't give you the opportunity to load something from an USB-device
OK, some success!
I went back and connected a mini USB straight to the PC and ADB driver installed detected the android device.
Ran ADB in windows powershell
So whats the best method to backup the entire ROM, and recovery files in the event I stuff this up?
Do I use just ADB for this or someother tools?
I did try one tool here from the vendors website but stuck as not sure what the Chinese characters mean..
Is the fact that this is only 1G i couldn't run Android at all and needs to be stripped down?
Cheers

@Kostiz
Android Oreo Go Edition is a lightweight distribution of Android that runs better than normal Android on devices with <= 1 GB of RAM
How to backup device's Stock ROM is eplained here.
Thanks again mate!
Seem I have to do a lot of reading and thankfully everything is here, just got to spend time to read and have a go!
BTW how do I go about using volume rockers and power button to move around the menu in recovery when there is none but only the two buttons as shown the reset and recovery buttons on the main board?
BTW, the current ROM installed boots into a special menu, all other settings are hidden, would there be a way to enable seeing all the items and when getting the the settings (gear icon) that pops up in the corner, only takes me to the standard wifi menu to choose a wifi, so it seems everything else is hidden, if by enabling these I could potentially not need to do anything other than stop the default application from starting up - if that makes any sense
Could I just get back into a adb shell and try
adb shell
su
pm enable applicationname
I have to read up on rooting first I assume before I do much more, this is getting exciting, LOL :good:

You use Android's HOME button to navigate within the Recovery menu, use POWER button to select option.
Hi, fellas! Please help me with one of these Citaq H10 POS. All we have is bootloop with some custom ROM showing vendor's logo.
Forcing it into recovery gives me some dead android screen with "No command" text.
Please guide me through this challenge, cause I have no other option but to ressurect it somehow.
Good news is that I have another one that is working fine, so we could try cloning it or something. Please help!
Yet I can't attach pics, cause of few posts, but if needed I can PM some.
citaq h10-2
I am also stuck with this machine citaq h10-2 , i did use a wireless kb to move up/down and not the 2 buttons on the motherboard , i can talk with it with ADB but all you can do is put it in sideload to upload new firmware and put it in fastboot but in fastboot you only get a black screen , what I have don is > opened up developer mode but you have no OEM UNLOCK tick box in side so running any bootloader unlock dose not work and i have run them all, if you google this machine for flashing new firmware you only get XDA this forum, unless any body knows another place to get the info from please let us know as i do think this would make a nice tablet with printer, the firmware is 5.1.1 and would love to put 6.0 or above on it but. i did download some firmware and used sideload to install it but it come up with error , i did try and make a backup but cannot do it ?, I think the firmware was from a galaxy s5 , I am not into all this firmware flashing so I am learning as I go along and if I brick it up well it was for free any way as the takeaway was shutting down and he gave it to me so no loss, if any body knows how we can get 6.0 or above on this machine please let us know.
A big thank you to all that can help put android 6.0 or above on this tablet.
Did you guys take a look at the solution here ? It worked for me ! All with a 2k ohm resistor...
Hola, alguien tiene la Rom de este dispositivo?
