Nova has always been problematic w/Fire OS for the specific reasons you cite. Other issues included inability to set Nova as the default launcher and rotation issues (both primarily under FireOS v3). I use and love Nova on all my Android devices but never got it to work properly with FireOS. See here for another option (untested).

Launcher 7?

Is there a launcher similar to (or exactly, lol) Launcher 7 that is compatible with the NT? I'm curious, mostly for my kids. Launcher 7 on the Market says it's not compatible with my device (possibly due to the fact that I'm running CM10).
You could try to sideload Launcher 7 on your NT and see if it works alright.

Working launchers list

I thought maybe we could all get on one page with launchers that work on rooted kindle fire hd. These work fine with no problems:
ADW ex
Nova launcher prime
Go launcher hd
FTL launcher pro
I also downloaded windows seven pro, it does work but it is a bit laggy and needs tweaking. (Yes I know, but I just couldn't help myself, wanted to try anyways)

Apex Launcher
thanks! which launcher would you suggest? are there any you can just download off play without further ado?
No all have to be moved to system apps and modified, (see go launcher thread)
I really like Nova and go launcher hd.
I've tried 4 different launchers:
Nova Launcher 1.21- worked after installing, would not start on reboot
Go Launcher HD- works, but the background image doesn't size right/shifts every time you rotate the screen
Apex Launcher 1.3- would not install
Nova Launcher Prime 1.0.1- works, no hide dock feature
Nova Launcher Prime 1.2- works well, slow to start, most features functional
the best way to figure out if a launcher will work is to download it, move it to system/apps, change permissions to rw--r---r---, DON'T INSTALL IT, reboot your kindle, and it should prompt you you when it starts to choose a launcher

Apex launcher works very well for me. Lots of controls - if you use 'em. Mostly, it just looks clean, and the maker took some pains to make sure that it worked well.
"Ice Cream Sandwich 2.4" - does not require root.

Mine worked perfectly fine once I got it moved to /system/app.
Whenever I rotate my Kindle to landspace while using Nova or Apex, it gets extremely laggy. Does anyone else have this problem?
Go Launcher HD
I can confirm that this works.
Have to be rooted, and side load it using Root Browser, by copying it to /system/app
Didn't even have to restart it, hit the Home button and asked me which launcher I wanted to use.
GOOD BYE AMAZON GARBAGE LAUNCHER

[Q] Changing the wallpaper in Apex Launcher on a Kindle Fire HD 6

I have installed a custom launcher on my Kindle Fire HD 6 using this method youtube.com/watch?v=v6_2GoSz5N4#t=19, however I soon found out that whenever I attempt to access the menu to change my wallpaper from the default black, the screen goes gray and I am returned to the home screen. Has anyone else found a fix for this? Does this problem persist in other launchers?
From what I read on other similar cases, changing wallpaper requires root.
From what I've read, the Kindle Fire HD 6 isn't rootable. Are there any other workarounds?

Besides on sideloading GAPPS and launchers, I think there is nothing we can do atm.

I think in one of these threads here someone has offered a suggestion of running an app that runs a transparent overlay of some sorts. Just remembered reading that somewhere here a few weeks ago? It might offer a temporary solution to not having wallpaper.

nova launcher strange issue

Hi!
I've recently installed the dev preview of Fire OS 5. It's amazing and really fast!
I've tryed to install a nova but, whenever i try to place a widget, my fire HD 6 opens the settings app
The stock launcher supports widget bye the space on the screen is very limite
I dunno
The 1st time you place a widget in Nova you get one of those "what do you want to use" prompts with the always/one time buttons. The choices, android.settings, are identical. Top one is Fire settings, bottom is Nova settings. You apparently chose top one and said always. Far as I know the only way to fix is to reinstall OS but maybe try a different launcher?
EDIT: Geesh (head-slap)! Above is for OS 4. I can only assume that unrooted OS 5 would always just go to Fire settings. Too bad. (Of course they don't want you to use alternate launcher. Boo!)
Thanks forse the answer!
Oh well, i think i home that the devs world root Fire os 5

Disabling Quickstep Launcher on Onn 7" tablet

I've installed and configured the Nova 7 launcher on my Onn. 7 inch tablet from Walmart.
The Nova 7 launcher works great. I've changed every function I could from Quickstep (the default launcher) to Nova 7 so I thought I was safe disabling Quickstep. Turns out that somehow or other Quickstep is still involved in handling multitasking since once I disabled Quickstep I could no longer get to the multitasking window. I re-enabled Quickstep and multitasking started working again.
Does anyone know if there's someway I can get Nova 7 to handle multitasking?
FYI I'm using Nova Launcher Prime 7.0.57 if it makes a difference.
I got the answer to this question from Nova7 support. They explained to me that this is just how things work. Only the stock launcher is able to handle multi-tasking. You can set a premium launcher as the default home app and give it all permissions and everything works fine but you need to leave the stock launcher enabled and installed if you want multitask.
