ROM for the ideal 'Wi-Fi only' experience? [Vzn Gal Nex (Toro)] - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Toro).
Hello, everyone. Anybody familiar with a build that focuses on making the Galaxy Nexus a wi-fi only device? Something that would maybe have Hangouts all ready to be used as the only Phone feature. Cellular disabled, an easily (or automatically) managed public wi-fi hotspot connector, Maps ready to cache your maps, etc.. You know...just no cellular service at all.

[Q] Trouble tether SGS2 to Playbook Rim

I have my Playbook and I get wifi and browse without issues when I tether with my iPhone 4, public and private hotspots, my router, etc
I have my Samsung Galaxy s2 and with the hotspot function I tether without issues netbooks, pcs, ipad, iphone, tablets with android. all these get wifi and browse perfect. But Playbook not
My playbook is connected to my wifi hotspot (Samsung Galaxy S2) with full bars, but I am not able to us any applications involving internet or browse at all. When I browse it says "Error: Couldn't reslove host name". When load a page freeze at 33%, get white and not more. After a minutes the error...
I try rename my SGS2 to short, long, alfanumeric, etc. with and without passwords, reset both devices, etc. always the same error. I try with other android phones (but froyos not gingerbread) and works perfect like hotspots for my playbook
not troubles Playbook and others devices

It's specific incompatibility betwen sgs2 and playbook?
Please, what can I do?
Thanks to all

[Q] Is galaxy tab 10.1 "WI-FI Direct" cerified?

Perhaps every one knows about the functions of wifi direct and how useful it is, on galaxy s2 it is very simple to connect the device to others with the same capability of wifi direct as you can find it in settings menu,
how about galaxy tab 10.1? although I could not find anything in the menu but still have the question if it is possible to use the device on wifi direct??
on some websites I saw wi-fi direct as a spec of galaxy tab 10.1, but could not find a clue on how to use it
I tried the Wifi Direct with my SGS2 and GT10 but it didnt work
On some website i read that Samsungs Implementation of WI-FI Direct is not like it should be because you can only connect with devices that have this feature.
According to the Specifications from the Wi-Fi Alliance only one device needs to have the Wifi Direct feature. EDIT: And this may be the reason why the GT10 doesnt have it

on the official galaxy tab specs site it says (wifi direct ) http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxytab/10.1/spec.html
where the F is this feature in our tab
Missing WiFi direct on Gtab 10.1
I was just noticing that, too. I have the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus with Android v3.2 on it, and there's an extra option in the "Wireless and networks" settings area for "WiFi Direct settings" but on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 with Android v3.2 that option is not present. I'm betting the functionality is present but it's just missing the required setup function. I noticed, also, that WiFi Direct is listed on the 10.1's specs. Unfortunately, no firmware-update love appears to be forthcoming from Samsung for the original Tab 10.1.
Look,
There is the Galaxy Tab 7.0, which I Would think, doesn´t have this options,
but now you have the galaxy tab 7.0 plus, with more features than the earlier model,....
So If there would be a galaxy tab 10.1 plus, the feature is guaranteed there included...., or a firmware update/upgrade comes..... and incude it....
greets
Since the new GS3 advertises their new S-Beam feature which uses WiFi Direct heavily, perhaps it would be to their benefit to make sure as many Samsung products have Wifi Direct enabled.
I wonder if NFC must be present in order for that to work entirely or not.
I have succeeded in getting a Wi-Fi Direct connection between two HC 3.2 10.1's (both P7510). Much good as that may be. I was not running any specialised software but could connect cleanly.
Disadvantage: after disconnect from Direct Wi-Fi the machine kept on scanning for Wi-Fi connections, even though the 'normal' Wi-Fi was switched off. A reboot fixed this.

[Q] Skyhook - How to enable it?

I have a Dual SIM Phone from China (Star A3).
It's a great phone for me, but I have one quite nasty problem:
Skyhook (Wifi Positioning System) isn't working in google maps (or isn't enabled?). For Samsung Galaxy S, I know there is a hidden app lbstestmode.apk which can be activated through the dialer, but for all the other phones, I can't find any solutions (obviously because on all the other phones it is enabled by default...) Has anyone an idea how to enable it, if not enabled by default?
Or well, let me ask the question in an other way:
What does lbstestmode.apk exactly change to enable Skyhook, or where is skyhook integrated in the software of Android (obviously not in Google Maps, otherwise it would work)?
Network location is broken on version 2.3.4 of this phone. IF you use a separate GPS app it will work fine.
IF you update to 2.3.5 then location service will work such as google maps, facebook check-in etc

[Q] Incorrect Location Without GPS enabled

Hello!
I did try searching the forums on this site and others but haven't found others discussing the exact same problem so here goes.
On my Galaxy S2, if I open Google Maps, my location shows my location incorrectly. I can understand without GPS it won't be exact, but I'm seeing my location as being at least a few blocks away no matter where I am. Same thing if I'm connected to Wifi, should that help or not? I used to own an old Windows Mobile 6.1 phone and before I would turn the GPS on, Google Maps would be off by a few feet, maybe a block or so. I was with Bell (CDMA) and I'm still with Bell (GSM).
"Why don't you just enable GPS and forget about it", you'll say. My problem is that I need more accurrate locations without GPS. I use a Cerberus which will allow me to connect remotely to the phone to get it's location if it's lost or stolen. If the phone is on, no problem, Cerberus will enable GPS in the background and I'll get the location accurately.
If the phone battery has died (which won't take long with the S2), I need to use the "Location History" to find the last known location (which won't have been retreived using GPS since I don't keep it on all day long).
1. Does anyone else have a problem retrieving semi-accurate location without GPS?
2. Why would I have accurate(ish) location with my old Windows phone and not with my Galaxy?
Thanks in advance!
Ala

Simultaneous Wi-Fi and Mobile Data (Cellular)

I want the application I am developing to use the Wi-Fi and Mobile Data (cellular) interfaces simultaneously on my Android 11 Galaxy Tab S7 5G device. The setting "Mobile data always active" does indeed allow fast interface-changeover. However, both interfaces are never data-accessible simultaneously. Using a third-party channel-bonding VPN service, called Speedify, this is possible on this Galaxy Tab S7 5G tablet. Speedify uses something mysterious called channel bonding with their VPN service to accomplish this. Also, a Google Pixel running Android 11 is also able to use both interfaces simultaneously, without any third-party utility help. In addition, the Garmin ActiveCaptain App also, somehow, gives this tablet the ability to communicate on both interfaces, simultaneously. How can my application use both interfaces on a Galaxy Tab S7 5G without using the Speedify App (not possible because of security and business reasons)?
Did you get anywhere with this?
How have you verified the Garmin app has this functionality? And when are both interfaces used? I wonder if only one channel has a typical data connection, and the other is for some other purpose (location, or something).
I think Speedify gets around the usual OS limitations by creating a single virtual device that all requests go through, then they decide which network to send packets on. It is neat to hear this can work on a mobile device though! I had assumed their service was for people on more typical PC like hardware.
In a way I'm not surprised Google's own phone has managed some tricks others haven't. Though I'd hope it wasn't an Android 11 only feature (meaning 12+ don't/won't have it).
This assumption of only cell or wifi being active might be baked in at an OS level to force better battery life. Personally I like flexibility and choice, but I can imagine less knowledgeable users getting angry at their terrible battery life (after they enable a feature they don't understand).
Maybe this is worth filing a bug with Android and seeing what they say? Or asking Samsung directly?
I was bummed when I figured out I couldn't just pay two ISP's for internet service and load balance across both easily. That my consumer router's optional 2nd WAN port was only a failover option (use one or the other).
As you alluded, for Samsung phones and tablets running Android 11 or Android 12, the ultimate solution is to route both WiFi and Mobile Data (cellular) data through a virtual interface e.g. tun0, via a VPN tunnel interface. I believe this will "shield" the Samsung one-or-the other route-switching that prevents simultaneous operation over both WiFi and Mobile Data. I am assembling just such a VPN now. I could certainly use any tips or suggestions from others that have already been down this road.
