Update made screen unresponsive. - Xperia Z4 Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
My Z4 just asked to update the ROM, and afterwards, the screen has areas that are no longer touch sensitive.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue?
Thanks for any ideas!
Jim

Have you tried rebooting, then opening the Diagnostics app and running the touch screen test? If there are still dead spots showing in the test, you might want to flag it to Sony support.
I'm not certain if it's a software or hardware issue, but I have found both pre and post-update, that the touchscreen occasionally becomes less responsive, to the point that trying to use a drag gesture doesn't work without the touch dropping out. This happens every couple of days, and I suspect it's to do with throttling as it coincides with very sluggish performance. Seems to resolve itself when left for a few minutes, or a reboot.

Yes! I thought it was just me. I have a tempered glass screen protector and removed it to confirm whether it was causing the issues. Also ran the diagnostics which ran just fine.
It seems to be perfectly fine after a reboot and then the longer you go the worse it gets.
Hoping that this is fixed in the 5.1.1 update whenever that happens.

The conditions that this occurs does seem extremely sporadic. After playing Star Wars Uprising for ~45 minutes yesterday morning, the touch screen failed to recognise any swipes or taps, to the point I had to force a restart with the power button to exit the game. After leaving the Z4 for 15 minutes, no issues at all.
Last night I managed to play the same game for over 90 minutes, and today for another 90 minutes with no problems at all.
I'm starting to think that it could be performance throttling, alternatively I have noticed the screen getting particularly warm above where the SOC sits. Could this temperature be affecting the screen sensitivity? Using CPU-Z I have found some of the sensors reporting around 70C, battery around 35C, though this is after running intensive games. I'm unsure if the upper temperature is normal for this type of chip or not.

I have the very same problem:
Tempered glass from IVSO and the original case from Sony.
Since the update the touchscreen is VERY unresponsive.
I removed the case (!) and it got better (seriously, WTF?).

Does it mean to remove the tempered glass will solve the problem?
But it was fine before upgrade to 251. Sony sucks...

I reset to factory settings, and that may have cleared it up... but I'm not positive.
I'll update this thread when I play with it some more.
Did anyone have success with removing the screen protector?

OK - I can confirm that a factory reset after the upgrade does not solve the problem. My tablet cannot pass the touch screen diagnostic.

I removed the case, not the screen protector.
But some issues are left, so i hope for the next FW-Update...

An update:
I reached out to Sony's support group. They suggested downloading the PC companion app and having it reflash the .251. This does a factory reset.
This made the touchscreen response significantly worse.
My next step is to see if they will let me downgrade to the previous release, because the tablet was working flawlessly on that release.

Sony support says you can't downgrade to the previous rom. I found flashtool, but can't find the old rom to flash onto the tablet. Still looking...

Noticed the same thing after the update.. Hoping for a fix soon as it was flawless before the update.
Now simply browsing is annoying because it either misses swipes or registers them as longer swipes, causing the page I'm trying to read to scroll down super fast as if I flicked it when I actually scrolled slowly. :crying:

There is no update coming. Sony does not acknowledge that the problem exists.

Need more people to post on Sony offical forum, tell them this problem.

I'm hoping the .253 version helps this problem. It doesn't appear to be available for anyone yet.

Here is a complete tutorial about flashing any firmware on your Z4 tablet, even downgrade to an older one.
http://www.xperiablog.net/2015/03/1...peria-lollipop-using-xperifirm-and-flashtool/
I flashed Nordic version of 28.0.A.7.24 firmware and my touchscreen sensitivity is back to normal
If you have any questions about the flashing procedure feel free to ask.

I had this exact problem after updating to 224. Ran the Sony Pc companion program on my windows pc and did a full software restore on my z4. problem solved.

I'm not sure whether is it because of root or Xposed, but after doing a factory reset, the touchscreen seems a bit more responsive. It is after rooting or installing xposed that the problem comes back up.

Ah, I also have intermittent touch problems. Until now I kept thinking it's because my finger is too cold or something, but I have it since upgrading to .224 also. Rooted and running Xposed v.85.1.

Yea, I kinda think it's either because of root or Xposed that's interfering with the touch sensors. But I'm kinda leaning onto to Xposed that's causing the problem.

Install CANNOT be clicked

Did anybody here experience on SK17i that when you install an APK coming from say, a file explorer or even the "Application Installer", then you click on the program you want to install, you can't click the "Install" button?
I mean you can click it but it won't register. And there's nothing you can do about it, unless power cycle the phone, and randomly experience the issue again.
I am pretty sure that this is not a hardware problem as the touch screen works everywhere, only in Installation this problem comes up.
I noticed this on the stock .335 firmware, and now that I flashed the .368 I thought it was fixed, still there sometimes, randomly.
But when it works (immediately after a power cycle), it works just as normal.
Installations coming directly from Android Market does not have this problem.
I don't install/uninstall apps regularly so its not much of a big deal but I really find this strange. As I am not fond of doing reboots and waiting for phone to start up just to find out it has that issue again, what I do is just install using "adb install" when connected to my laptop.
Any similar experience, and how is this resolved?
i was .335 now .368 but i don't have this issue sorry.
I'm curious when you say reboot do you turn off the phone completely or you have an app.
in the market Fast Reboot closes all app but keeps phone still on. maybe that can help in some strange way instead of turning off the phone, if thats what you mean.
thanks for the response. like i said its rare i encounter this, but at some random instance it happens. if i had no choice i power cycle the phone (sorry i mentioned reboot in the 1st post), but it is power cycle. i know the "Fast Reboot" application, but what that does is just kill all apps, not really reboot
btw, a program that really reboots the phone on one click is "Reboot Control Widget", which I have installed (rarely used though) and it needs root.
Same issues have happened here randomly. I am running the .368 firmware with google market automatically updated to the newer version (the windows phone 7 like).
Nope. Didn't have this problem
Sent from my SK17i using XDA App
Could that be because the installation file is corrupted or invalid?
^ Not so, because after a power cycle, its almost 95% the error disappears and you can install it normally. Strange huh...
I have this issue sometime, which the version is 4.0.A.2.364
and will try the 2 'reboot' app mention in this post, thanks.
2 days ago my phone totally lost responsiveness of touch screen. As in touch screen dead. I'm sending it back today for seller to replace. Good thing I bought a cheap arc yesterday.
What's evident here now, is this issue could be telltale signs that eventually the touch screen will die so arrange for backup and warranty.

Yes that may be the case. In any case, because of that event, I was able to get a cheap Arc. Now i'm thinking which do I keep when the SK17i gets back.

Just an update on this matter.
It seems the app "Screen Filter" which helps reduce the brightness contributes as one of the cause or maybe the main cause of this issue. I happened to observe it on Xperia Arc on rare occassions. When I turn off the app, Install clicking works afterwards.

Glitchy Touchscreen

For about 4 days now my screen has been acting up and giving me quite the annoyance. It initially started while i was on Deck's "gbsense-e3d-deck [1.0]" ROM. I wiped cache and dalvik then re flashed the ROM twice but the screen kept malfunctioning. I was forced to perform a factory reset and re flash a new downloaded file of the same ROM which fixed nothing. I wanted to see if it was a ROM specific issue so i flashed CyanogenMod 7 VALPHA3 and the issue was still present but to a much less annoying degree. Now it seems as if my device doesnt register touch around the midsection. That makes me unable to select anything that may be in that area. I have tried multiple multitouch apps and testers to "diagnose" what is going on with my touch screen, but all i can gather is that my screen might be ****ed. The phone works flawlessly excluding the touch screen's unresponsive zone, so i don't know whether it's a hardware or software issue. Any insight concerning this matter is welcomed, Thanks.

Could it be a ground issue? Try holding the phone in your hand and see if it still does it. I remember my OG Evo having a similar problem when I laid it on something non conductive.

It occurs both while in hand or on a surface. An example is if i pull down the notification bar, depending what hits the affected zone, i'm unable to select it. I used SBM quite often and now when drawing for example a straight line up it would look like this _____________ __________ (vertically of course) the gap being my speculated affected area but much wider.

Is it possible that both of the roms you tested are using the same kernel? I would swap out the kernel with the stock one just in case. At least it'll rule it out lol.

I'd take it one step further and return completely to stock, if it STILL does it, then I would guess it's a problem with the digitizer and you would either have to buy a replacement one, or take it to Sprint. If you don't have TEP then HTC's warranty should suffice.
Possibly related?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1267124
It looks similar to this issue, but you are getting it with a single touch instead of with a multitouch. I get EXACTLY the same thing if I use a second tap while drawing a line. Try "multitouch visualizer 2" from the market and see if it registers one tap that is on all the time or if you can actually get the full 4 touches at once. I doubt it will be insighful, but it can't hurt--and if you have an "always on" (perhaps in the button area below the screen) then you know the digitizer is bad.
If it is the same issue, try restarting and give it time. Mine has gone from happening often to happening about 1% of the time. It is software and can be "corrected" by either time or a restart. It is WORST on the first boot after flashing something (even JUST a stock kernel). I have absolutely no idea why.
Good luck. I hate this junk. My Evo 4G never had this sort of glitchy garbage, but, whatever it is, it is likely due to HTC's glitchy kernel!

I would also like to know whats going on.. I have two evo's 3d and my friend was telling me that he is having issue with the touchscreen he is still on stock... and my was rooted the same day I got it and has no issues.. He mentioned that the same area mentioned in this thread is the are affected in his phone... could this be cause by the screen digitizer??
Ignore this... Thought I found what my issue was... But wasn't the case
I had the same problem but it only seemed to be in one horizontal strip of my screen. Im not sure what caused it maybe its from me dropping it or what. I also did try to flash other roms and kernals but still no fix so i said to myself im going to put it back to stock and take it to sprint. There they looked it for about 2 minutes and deemed it was a hardware issue. The guy asked if i had a warranty. Two days later i received a refurbished phone.
So in all revert it back to stock... search on htcevohacks . com
Take it back to sprint and show them your problem. They should also deem it as a hardware issue and send you a replacement

[Q] [MINIPRO] Back button not working?

Sometimes when im using MP my back buttong is not working, no vibrate and doesnt even respond with vibrate. what could be the cause of this problem? anyone experience this?

Same here.
I wasn't aware this problem until I flashed CM7.2.
Does someone experience this in stock rom?
And I find that it usually happens when I wake up in the morning or from afternoon rest for 2-3 hours. The variation in environment condition, such as moisture, may cause that to occur?

True, needs reboot im using stock rom not rooted, .62 FW XMP Black
hi.
i have also had problems with the back button on my SK17i playing up. I haven't updated my phone past 2.3, O2 are so kind and won't let me.
Now unless I'm a really soggy person, my back key decides it doesn't want to work today when my phone is bone dry (to me anyway). It did have an episode where it was in a pocket of a tent where alot of condensation gathered, but the back key was playing up before then...
I'm getting really frustrated by this as the only way i have to be able to get the key working again is to turn it off then back on. My phone isn't rooted or anything...it just decides (more frequently as the days go by) "you want to go back...nah not today methinks..." I'm getting to the point where I'm considering throwing in the towel and just getting a whole new phone...
Aha. I knew I couldn't be alone.
Facing this across two three roms now.
Gets more severe as the days go by.
Regards
N
i know its kindda of on an old thread haha..... but.. hmmm it seems its fairly common, anyone has a solution? im having the issue too, i have to reboot to fix it.... thanks in advance
I have the same problem, and for me it definitely started after the OTA update to ICS. But, when I go back to [flash stock] GB it's still there.
When I installed CM9 (and later CM10) the problem was gone, gone, gone... So lovely...
Unfortunately I had other problems with these ROMs that in the end drove me insane (!!!)
So now I am on a stock-based custom ROM, which is super fast and smooth [w/ rage kernel 3.2] and it took me a while before I realized the problem came back so obviously for me it's something that comes with the stock rom (that gor changed with the upgrade, but doesn't change with a downgrade, to GB).
Also, I noticed that if I press really hard it works as it should -in realizing this I remembered that I had similar problems caused by a protective film I used in the beginning, but when I upgraded [the protective film] to one of substacially higher quality this wasn't a problem anymore. But now if I peel up the corner by the back button it is clear that it gets way more responsive... But not enough to say it's back to normal.
These are the things I have been able to gather about this issue. But I guess all you really need to know is that if you use CM9 (or CM10) [w/ extended kernel] this problem is not an issue anymore -so what does that mean...?

Help! Lag Problem, Screen Unresponsive - Recent..?

Recently, the past couple of weeks, my XTZ has been lagging out a lot, the keyboard has been freezing, and the screen has been going unresponsive a lot! I've had it since June and this is a recent problem. Its not the launcher; one of the first things i did was install Nova launcher, however i am running stock (I believe build 370). This is getting to be a real problem as i have to restart my tab in the middle of important tasks (as i'm mainly using it for school now). I am rooted using DoomLords easy rooting kit ( i believe v13, maybe 14 but i doubt it) and bootloader is still locked. And no i dont have a live wallpaper and recents is cleared plus i use greenify. Thanks in advance for any help.
Don't know if this is related, but I just updated to the official 4.2.2 update a few hours ago, and the touchscreen on my Tab Z is unresponsive, doesn't want to register any inputs

Yes, I do. I've had it about a week
So I restored my device with flashtool (still .370) and i'm still getting slight lag out issues. It's definitely better than before, but the screen still goes unresponsive and I have to lock and unlock the device in the middle of whatever im doing. Also, ive noticed it registers multiple touches at random moments. For example if im on chrome and my tab is lying flat on my desk I may go from scrolling a webpage to zooming into it, all whilst using one finger. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[Q] Xperia Ultra increasingly slow/ unresponsive screen

To keep things simple, I had a cracked screen on the Ultra which was replaced last week. However now the phone screen is slow and unresponsive after about a minute of use (fast & like new after right turning on however).
Ive tried the mod tweak found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2522657
As well as the thermal screen calibration here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2470070
There is no change with either mode. Cleaning with alcohol only works for a few minutes, and yes Ive removed the ASF for no change.
It should be noted that when booted at first minute or two, the touch inferface is quick and brilliant. After a minute or so it gets slower and remains so. Typing a text is a gruelling affair at that point,
Ran 4.3 android and updated to 4.4.4 and also no change in performance.
Does anyone have any ideas/ tips or pointers?
HELP!?!
An app with a memory leak?
Looks quite normal. RAM 1.1GB used; 600MB free.
Unless thats not what were talking about?
EDIT: might be up to something. using advanced kill on Go taskmanager EX and its seemed to do improve the situation in the short term. Will keep testing
Well got about that far thus far. The advanced kill works sometimes, but none of the apps look out of whack (from my basic knowledge anyhow)
Any help/ links in diagnosing a memory leak would be very appreciated.
Don't suppose you've got the Google now launcher? I had to uninstall as they introduced a memory leak in the last update.
Un updated it just in case.
Its tough as even watchdog lite isint detecting much. com.google.android.gms:snet at startup took 22% CPu but otherwise its steady.
Grr jezz I even did a factory reset to 4.4.4 and its still there. Would trying a custom rom help?
Well as an update manage to completely wipe and reinstall the OS. No change in performance however
Does anyone know if a faulty screen install could be to blame for this?

Could well be, but i find it strange that it acts normal again after a reboot? That alone indicates that it's something wrong with the software. I still hold a finger on a process gone wild. Do you have Recovery installed? If yes, re-flash the ROM or flash something else and see if that solves it. I would personally flash a stock ROM and flash it with Flashtool so you don't have to root or void any warranties, and it'll be the simplest thing to do in case the screen is still acting weird after flash, and you want to get it checked out again (since it most certainly will be a hardware issue at that point).
So, fire up Flashtool, download a complete stock ROM (TFT), flash it, test it. Is it working fine now? Sweet. Keep using the ROM. Is it still the same thing? Contact the repair center again and tell them what's up and please do tell them that you've already done a factory reset, since that's the first thing they'll do themselves. Do not tell them about Flashtool or any other hacks or tweaks. They'll probably blame you if they think that you're an XDA user. "Oh, so you've been playing with it, and you bricked it and wanna fix it for free, bla bla".
Ask if they can open the device again and check that everything is fine and that you haven't received a faulty panel.
Ive actually did a complete tft flash of the original xperia ultra software. No change whatsoever vs previous state.
Im increasingly suspecting a hardware issue. Could it be a poorly plugged in cable? Its random chugging/ smooth response is completely confusing...

Did you flash the exact same FTF that you've always used, or did you flash one from a different region? I would try the GPe ROM if i were you, just to be sure, but don't bother doing it if you're not rooted and ready to flash. Yes it can easily be a hardware issue, and you should probably contact Sony or your nearest service center.
As an update I tried installing a fresh tft flash of a different build but same issue.
Notably noticed that the notification light on the screen is not working at all, so currently looks like a hardware issue. Will keep updated for reference & visit a repair centre
