Root for ZTE Spro 2 and unlocking 200 lumens in battery mode - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Looking for information on how to root ZTE Spro 2 projector. The maximum projection illumination of 200 lumens is locked in battery mode and medium/low 100 lumens or less projection is useless. Too weak even in a dark room, so this restriction renders the internal 6300mAh battery useless.
The projector runs Android v4.4 KitKat. Any help would be appreciated.

In light of the overwhelming response to this request, I am forced to offer a starting bid of $100 USD, for anyone willing to root AND remove the illumination restriction on this device. Please PM me if you intend to look into this. Others are welcome to join in and sweeten the pot for the developer, willing to take this on.

Yes ebay sells it for about $50 including shipping. I just bought mine and it works very well.

zte spro2 root / remote control
thank yall for the reply.. lets keep this forum alive!
well ive bought a remote control seperately for my zte spro2 projector and it works like a charm. i just figured out that the remote control for the zte spro2 (without root permission) is UNABLE to POWER ON/OFF the device itself....
any information about HOW to power on of the device remotely
without rooting it?
(if there is any news about rooting the spro2, pls let me know, still eaiting there)

I second that request.. I know some have successfully rooted the ZTE SPRO 2?
Can someone share the procedure?
Can procedures from ZTE phones be applied here or do we need custom files?
Remote is available on ebay for $29 + free shipping. Cheaper than before...
Thank you!

There's the Spro2 remote app in the playstore that allows you to remotely control the screen. I don't think there is or will be a root for this device at this point.

Huge bug in the ZTE Spro2 projector. Service /system/bin/netmgrd uses 40-50% cpu constantly, even when idle. Notified ZTE software engineer, was promised a fix. 1.5 month ago.
Use "OS Monitor" to easily confirm/test.

I'm looking for a root too. This thing could be amazing if only we could root it.
Anyone bite yet?

Nope, if for only one reason, so we can fix that system process that kills the cpu and battery throwing the whole peojector out of spec. Half cpu speed, draining battery etc. Not what was promised on the specs.

ARE SOME KIND OF ADVACE OR ALREADY ROOTED ??:fingers-crossed::good:

I've heard some people having success with Kingroot, but it depends on which version of the Spro2 you have. I tried it on the AT&T model and it didn't work. All i want with root is to be able to turn off the hdmi check so i can project the cable tv app which is restricted by the hdmi.

Did you ever find a solution????

Has this been solved yet
I am looking to pick up the ZTE Spro 2 but like you said 100 lumens isn't enough and does render the massive battery useless. Has anybody found a way to unlock the lumen output. Thanks in advance.

KingRoot does a "temporary root". It usually goes away when you reboot and you need to re-root once again. Be sure projector is off when you try to root. For some reason having the projector on prevents root.
Once rooted the only thing I had problems was modifying the hosts file to block ads (ironically the reason why I wanted to root so badly). I have been able to freeze and uninstall bloatware without issues.
Regarding the lumens settings, I haven't really gotten into that. and frankly Im not interested since I use my projector in a closed dark room and do not use it as a portable device
I have the wifi non-sim version

Does anyone else have the bug that when a bluetooth device is connected it pops up a message in Chinese? I would love to be able to root to get rid of that.

ZTE Spro 2 Tips
Here's what I use on my Spro2 for outdoor use.
Slingbox with component cables connected to the cablebox. Allows remote access to all my cable channels with no projection restrictions. Duracell Dura12-9F2 12v 9Ah battery. Provides 6 hours of full 200 lumens projection play time. You'll need to buy a short (2 or 3 ft) dual line electric wire. Attach a power adapter tip to one end and quick disconnect connectors to the other to mount on the battery posts. For audio, I use the very portable but loud and crisp JBL Charge Bluetooth rechargeable speaker that provides 8 hours of play time and comes with USB ports to charge your portable devices (hence it's name). I also use a small multiple port USB adapter so that I'm not limited to one USB device. With that, I simultaneously connect a USB air mouse to remotely control the projector and a 4TB USB External Drive, filled with over 1500 movies, tv shows, concerts, sports, scenery videos, etc. Lastly, I have a 6” camera mini tripod I use to angle and level the projected image. I strongly recommend purchasing the Archos Video Player and MX Player Apps from the Playstore. Archos is an Android movie manager automatically downloads and allows you to view the associated movie posters, movie info, trailers, subtitles etc. for your movie collection, and you can use the Archos built in video player, or set it to use MX Pro as the default video player which gives you the best of both worlds in managing and playing your media. The projector, mini tripod, external battery, external drive, speaker and USB adapter all easily fit into a small back pack or similarly sized pouch. I also keep a portable tripod widescreen in the trunk of my car, but usually find a blank light colored wall to project on so I rarely need to bring it out. Do what I did and you will really get the most out of and enjoy this device. People are always amazed when they see me projecting clear and bright live sport events, TV programming or the latest movies at a park, beach, riverwalk or other relaxing place. So follow my tips, bring your favorite snacks and drinks along and enjoy a fun casual date or family night out projecting 6+ hours of your favorite cable programming, internet media or stored movies. Have fun!

Tv remote control

*update, the conclusion is that the current software is useless and as of the ppc6800 and the following HTC models, the IRDA port is either crap or non-existent, for that reason I am building a powered, universal adapter to turn any phone into a remote*
hello. first off, yes I know there are old threads about this, but they are dead and had a different take on this topic. I am looking to know if anyone has gotten any tv remote control software working on the mogul. I don't care about the distance so I dont want to hear about how the mogul is ill-equipped to do this, I just want to know what software works as I will use\make a IR repeater\booster that will give me all the range I need.
I have tried the following software
1-PDAWin tv remote controller simply crashes when I press any button
2- noviiRemote is not compatible with our IR
3- RemoteControl II v.2.12 stays it is incompatible with our processor and for that reason, it turns off the IR access... but the rest of the software works ??? odd
4- UniversalRemoteCE 4.0 Tested by wagonis, froze his phone with every try
5- Total Remote does not work, freezes when I try to record a signal.
Untested
6- UltraMote
can't find
7- VITO remote
so to recap. Has anyone found a working software? I will give a free IR booster\repeater to anyone who can point me to a proper and working programmable universal remote control software that works over IR and not the web (or even better, anyone who can get PDAWin tv remote working )
thanks.
Honestly, I've tried 4 different softwares from that list and none worked, if anything they kept crashing my phone...so I gave up before I caused any damage to my phone. If you figure out which one works though, please list it, I'd like to know and try it.
can I know which was teh 4th that did not work so I can update my list please?
UniversalRemoteCE 4.0 froze up my phone every time I tried to use it
Many have tried. I am pretty sure no one has succeeded.
in my best Airplane - The Movie voice
"good luck, we're all counting on you"
my best suggestion is to buy an older known compatible phone with stronger irda
i looked into it a bit ago and came up with a good solution and found two of the phones on ebay for $20...but never bought them
i know it would be convenient to use our daily cell for this feature...but its an uphill battle
dont give up...lol
double post
Since the whole software thing does not seem to work... I am going to set out on making my own! My goal is to make a universal-universal remote app; even cross-platform, and the way I will do this is with external hardware. Since most new phones do not have a good IR port, I will make an external IR port that plugs into phones, mark my words!
I will keep people up to date on this
I'll subscribe to this thread to keep tabs on this. Good luck.
Well I am very excited to say that things are moving along nicely. Unfortunately, my local electronics supply shop (that is actually worth going to) is closed during weekends since its a small business who's main clients are engineering students during the year . This means that My full prototype (with range booster) will have to wait, but the basic premise is working, and, depending on my schedule, I should have a working prototype soon. I have already gotten in contact with a few chinese companies to compare the price of production of the modules.
well, the project is coming along well, but I need some input from the community. 1 is a note, 2 is the important question.
1- the software will be open source. The exact format still has to be determined, but the main lead right now is java so that i can be universal for all phones (except the Iphone that will need its own app).
2- Should it be powered or not? The module is coming along well, but I need some input. If it is powered, I have to make the tough decision between having the ext-usb plug sticking out on the edge of the board, meaning you have a 9v battery dangling from your phone or a short cable (1-2 feet) that plugs in the ext-usb port and the module rests next to you. What is the best route for this? (Ideally I would love bluetooth, but I do not have the electronic know-how for this)

Why not make all? Powered and not. Corded and not. Are you encasing the electronics? If just for the Mogul how 'bout a phone case type add on putting the IR port on the right end of the phone while you're at it so we don't have to rotate our screens? That being said, with the Mogul getting dated, how 'bout for newer phones lacking IR ports all together like the touch pro and touch pro 2? Oh, maybe someone could help you out with bluetooth.
Well its not just for the mogul, it is going to work universally for all HTC phones and will be one little tweak away from working with other phones.
As far as corded or not, I think I will make it non corded and then you can just add it. It will cost a few cents extra but save alot on production costs of 2 different modules (if I go with powered, unpowered can easily be both).
The reason I am not doing powered and unpowered is that the powered requires a case and a battery and starts getting a little big (the size of half a thumb approximately), while the unpowered one is about 0.5mmx0.5mm. Also, making the powered one requires a much greater production cost as it would be made in china because if I make it myself, the powered one would be about 4 inches by 2 inches as I can't make the small traces myself, many of the parts are hard to come by and suftace mount is hard to do.
The reason that none of the programs work is because they require raw IR port access, not the IRDA protocol.

lol I hear ya. Everything is being delayed because the store I usually go to was selling IR LEDs for 4 bucks and they don't specify voltage so I had to order some online. I just need to get that stupid LED so that I can be done with the hardware and get working on the software.
I am still waiting on those diodes. I bought molding and casting material so that our IR emitters will look better than a loose set or components soldered on an extusb port
Anyone going to china who can buy ExtUSB ports for 50 cents with the breakout port? I got that quote from a company but I don't like sending unsecured payments and 10$ per extusb port + breakout board is going to make it pretty expensive for us. If so, let me know, I would like to buy a batch.
thanks.
since our device will work on many phones, instead of creating threads in every forum of every device, we decided to opt for a twitter account where we will keep everyone up to date on this project.
Spread the word!
http://twitter.com/wrctweets
Found this thread searching for a Bluetooth to IR converter, so I could use my Rhodium as a universal remote.
I was wondering... since all modern smartphones have Bluetooth, why not make a powered BT -> IR converter, which uses the HID standard? Since most phones have a HID application already (my old SE K750i could be used to control my desktop computer with HID), you don't need a lot of development on the phones itself. You'd need a way to program the conversion table (key 5 -> send PLAY IR sequence), I guess. You could then have a simple HID remote on simple phones or a full blown custom skinnable remote on a WVGA smartphone.
It would really be nice to have a Philips Pronto (or similar) universal remote where you can operate all sorts of equipment.
unfortunately, working with bluetooth at that level would be well beyond my expertise and bring the cost up $$$$$ because of the low volume of production. Also, making the drivers for this would be much harder and way to phone-specific, killing the intent of this device. Also, the way this works, it should work with any standard IR device.
I have a p4000 and am upgrading to a touch pro2, when I upgrade again in 2 years, I don't want to have to start the project over .
Finally, bluetooth device = more components = bulkier and = batteries!
I am getting back home late tonight and I will get back to work on the project (got the LEDs the day I was leaving).
ps. I do appreciate all feedback and comments.
thank you

sorry for being off topic, but do you know when the touch pro 2 is coming out in Canada ? And who's gonna get it telus, roger, fido or bell ?? (hope this is coming to Telus)
hehe, its out with telus waiting for mine in the mail now!
Inbound Ir
Will your Module accept inbound ir transfer? I am using a polar hr monitor that uses ir to download files to my phone. I've been looking for an upgrade option with ir without success. If your module will work, this is great news. Keep up the good work.

do you have any wonderful achievements on it?
well it kinda sucks doesnt it .. even i have got the same one ... things i of what i know ppl use rom manager after rooting .. but after installing rom manager .. what i noticed was that HCL is not at all in their list ... for crying out loud it even has Spice Mi tablet on their list but not HCL .. so i think we are stuck
it doesn't really suck that much.. hehe. I love the performance of it.. almost everything works with mine.. Skype Video calls, High End Games (Trial Extreme, etc), Jabber VOIP Calls, etc. I use VTL Launcher and it adds a lot of space on this tab. I use MultiLing Keyboard for Tab which increases the productivity. I wanted to make Junos Pulse Work on it. If that works, I see nowhere else. Any help there guys? may be the tun.ko file is needed for this

Hey, even I got this tablet from eBay, and came without warranty... and guess what, I also have issue with the GPS...it doesn't work is that the problem with all these models??
I have one more problem, it has facility of inserting Sim Card, but I am not able to make the voice calls from my Airtel SIM (2G). However, I am able to send and receive messages just like normal mobile phones. Do you have any idea about this?
One more thing to add, as it doesn't have warranty, it's product no. is not registered with HCL Service center and they are not able to provide any support on this.
Mine also comes with Nvidia Tegra.
Can you please guide me how to root it successfully? Does Android Market work after rooting it?
---------- Post added at 08:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:49 PM ----------
Can anybody please suggest which all applications or games are worth keeping on this tablet?
I am currently using a few games like Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, Chess etc. Apart from that it works as a good e-book reader...good to read books on big screen
Also, did any of you manage to register it for HCL support atleast, if not the warranty?
Even if it is a bit bulky, I feel it is worth the price we got on eBay!!
Please keep posting your experiences and new things you learn about it, which others can take advantage of

@vishalblr - there is not warranty or support from HCL for this Tab. But hey, who needs it.
There is no voice call support on this Tab. only SMS works along with GPRS/EDGE/3G.
I tried using the internet on GPRS, EDGE, 3G and Wifi and everything works perfect. I'm pretty much impressed with that.
You can install every thing on it after rooting. Android Market, Google Contacts, Google Calendar, Facebook, Google Maps, Google Talk.. etc which are compatible with the hardware and Andoird 2.2
For rooting the device, I used SuperOneClick v2.1.1 - ShortFuse. You can google for the instructions on rooting with this tool.
And about the games, I say every game works perfect. HomeBattle3D, CricketFever, other 3D games, Droidhen, etc etc..
I am very much satisfied with the Tab. I never felt a lag or force close on this device unnecessarily. I am trying to get Junos Pulse working on it. If any of you have become successful in connecting to VPN with it, please let me know.
Hi parameshwaran/sajavid
thanks a ton for your reply, i indeed order this tablet yesterday.
don't really care if i don't able to make voice calls but looks like this is disabled by manufaturer (same as ipad 2), should able to crack this.
also i am interested to upgrade OS of this device, looking at the hardware specification i think this device can be upgraded to gingerbread/honeycomb/iCS
if anyone able to upgrade it, please post here.

[Q] External Touchscreen Display

For the past few days I have been racking my brain and searching multiple forums for the answer(s) and I finally turn to XDA to hopefully help answer.
The thought: I would love to be able to take my DroidX connect it via HDMI to a 7" monitor in my car to have a nice view of the navigation, access to my music and all of the other items that the phone has to offer (which include data connection and accurate GPS). Sure I can buy an android based headunit or build a carPC but why when I have what all of that has to offer in my pocket? Then I got to thinking, to take it a step further, why not use a 7" touchscreen monitor so that I am not just passing video and sound via the HDMI but that the monitor registers touches to the phone.
WebTop is a great middle of the road solution as it would output the HDMI and allow the user to utilize the phone as the mouse touchpad on the screen. Sadly it is only offered for a select few phones. So on to my questions.
1. Did I some how miss a WebTop project being worked on that would do what I am talking about?
2. Am I wrong in thinking that drivers need to be worked out depending on the phone AND which 7" TS was used?
3. Most, if not all, android phones have video out capabilities, so outputting to the screen would be workable, but is there a better way to get the input hurdle worked out.. not a question just an open suggestion box.
Looks like a few more days or looking would have helped. Customgadz has what I need.
so what did you find? I searched for Customgadz, with no results. did you use hdmi mirroring with Android, or does this work with webtop?
Looks like the australian website has a solution to control an android device with a 4 wire external touchscreen using a module.
search for "customgadz remote touch"
Only pre-order now and the website states they start delivering end of januari

What is a good android box?

Hey,
I was thinking about an Android box thingy and there are many cheap options.
I would like to play around with some emulators (PPSSPP included) with a USB controller I have and watch some anime ^^ I'd also not like to spend in excess of ~$35 (max $45)
Any good cheap boxes that can do that? Preferably that support Lolipop since I love its UI.
I've seen ones with Amlogic S802,812 and 912 CPUs and RK3188 and 3368 CPUs.
Which one is decent? eBay links would be appreciated ^^ Thanks! (OpenGL ES3 support would also be nice.)
RK3188 drives my LighInTheBox mk809iv. It's got 2GB RAM, 8GB EMMC, a full sized USB 2 port, hdmi, microSDXC port, runs KitKat 4.4, comes with Kodi pre-installed. I rooted it with Kingoroot.com, so that I could run a vnc server on it. I remote control it with my phone which running the free Valence app, or sometimes I remote it with Screen Sharing on my Mac. It plays nicely, and I get decent enough Wifi speeds. It's run everything I have thrown at it. A quick search for mk809iv will bring up a whole lot of these devices, even some with 16gb EMMC. Some will arrive pre-rooted, others will not. Look for Realtek Wifi for best compatibility if you intend to flash it (which requires a PC). It is fun to play with, but looking back on the experience, I'd rather have had a small Android phone with MHL/hdmi-output, as it would have been much easier to set up if there was a screen on the device itself. Just a thought. Used Galaxy s3 handsets are getting cheap enough now, with the same functionality. Cheers!

Yep! Any suggestions regarding TV apps, websites with TV shows, forums for TV boxes and input devices? I don't really think the bundled remote would be something I'd wanna use. I've seen wireless small keyboards with trackpads, do you know anything about them?

The forum I use for my Android devices is usually XDA, right here.
I used a USB keyboard and a mouse to set mine up.
For the record, I rooted my MK809 IV, which has an rk3188 SOC running KitKat 4.4, with Kingo Root, to allow me to run a VNC server, because I use a free Android app called Valence on my phone as a wifi trackpad/mouse and use my phone's keyboard to type on the Android TV. Root allows me to use the free RemoDroid app to control my Android TV from my phone or tablets from anywhere in my house.
Kodi comes on mine, and it's a free app in the Play Store anyway. I tried to set it up last April, but it kept crashing. If you are into that sort of thing, it is a very capable media server for sure.
For playing local files, I think MX Player is the champion app.
I ultimately bought a Logitech k700 keyboard with built-in trackpad to use with mine - I purchased it refurbished on a Newegg special for fifteen dollars! I take that keyboard everywhere with me. I love it. I prefer to use an actual mouse, but since I bought the k700, I have not missed mice enough to actually plug one in. I like it because it is nearly full-sized, but still compact, and it comes already set up to use a single USB wireless dongle. Range has been great, and after almost a year I am still on the first set of batteries.
Just today I was looking into purchasing the remote that came with your TV box, so please, let me know if you like it.
I bought a Hubman USB 2.0 hub in case I need more ports. It seemed like a good idea to have it, but I have not actually plugged it into the Android stick yet. I'm sure it will support a mouse, keyboard & usb thumb-drive just fine.
I don't want to go too far off-topic, so if it's okay with you, I'll pm you a list of apps I use for video. Nothing seems to slow down my aging rk3188 quad. Your rk3368 octa-core is going to be fantastic! Would you please post a link to the auction? Even if the auction is closed, I'd love to take a look at the device. The price you paid is unbelieveable!

China gadgets also has firmware updates for it! ^^
Thanks, I'd love a list of apps!
Thanks for the links! It's insane that we can buy an 8-core computer for forty bucks. So sorry that I haven't checked in for a while.
I haven't really been watching TV or movies lately. When I've had free downtime, I've been playing a roll-playing game that's called Skydoms. I didn't think I'd get hooked on it, but then I did.
How is that box working out for you?

Seiki Media Streaming Box

Hello there.
About a month or so ago I saw an ad in the Canadian Tire flyer for a new media player for $99 on sale. Now of course I can't share a link just yet, at least not for another 8 more posts. But if you search Canadian Tire website, you can find it.
The purpose of this post is to see if anyone has tried this. It's got some pretty good stats. Plus the fact it has a one year exchange warranty and it's Canadian Tire, so if anything goes wrong with it within 365 days, you bring it back and get a new one. No questions asked. That's very appealing. So... has anyone tried this yet? Here are the stats.

What do you mean by this question? Can you add external storage? If that is indeed your question, then yes. I have a 1TB WD drive hooked up to it and watch "stuff" that way.
I mean to use as internal storage not removalable. Iv tried to get this to work to day but I can only get it to setup as a removable USB. Also this box comes pre rooted so do I need to download SuperSU app? Will that help to get things working proper?
