Flashing Redmi Note 2 With Clean ROM? - Redmi Note 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was going to buy a Redmi Note 2, but I noticed some of the reviews on Aliexpress say the phone comes with malware and that Chinese advertisements pop up regularly. The reviews say you have to flash a clean Miui ROM to resolve the problem, but I had a few questions about doing this:
Where do you get a clean Miui7 ROM for the Redmi Note 2 from?
Do you need to root the phone in order to flash the ROM?
Are there any step by step instructions anywhere for flashing the ROM?
I'm not really up to date with this sort of thing so I'm grateful for any advice you can offer.

Official ROMs are available from en.miui.com. Please read their forums for info on the different types that are available for the RN2. At the moment there are stable and developer Chinese ROMs available (these contain only U.S English and Chinese), the latter being rooted.
Unofficial multilanguage ROMs are available from xiaomi.eu, in two flavours, stable and developer, the latter having built in root via the security app.
My phone was delivered with a full multi language ROM including UK English language and region available, but it was buggy and had malware, or at least adware that is not present in the official ROMs. I installed an official ROM before entering ANY personal information or accounts.
Go to the download page for the RN2 on en.miui.com, there are full instructions for the various ways to flash a ROM. You do not need a custom recovery, you do not need to be rooted, you can even do it from the built in updater app, even if it's the unofficial multi language ROM that you're flashing.

Thanks a lot for the detailed advice. It looks easy enough, so I'll go ahead and order the phone.
I notice the stable ROM is MIUI6 and the developer ROM is MIUI7. Do you know if they'll be releasing a stable MIUI7 ROM any time soon?

I'm trying to download a clean ROM, but the downloads seem to stop at 3MB or 16MB when it should be 700+MB. Any tips? (This is from the official site... as far as I can see)

Try using a download manager like jdownloader or download from xiaomi.eu

I made a video guide -

I've managed to download the weekly from xiaomi.eu was nice and quick this morning using a French mirror from Androidfilehost.com
All I need now is the damn phone. Lol

Remember guys, to have a super fast download from xiaomi (normaly it's http:// bigota........) you just need to copy/paste the download link to your browser and add a "o" (not a zero), and you'll have fast download
i.e. http://obigota.......

How to get rid of bloatware on Xiaomi Redmi Note 2

Hi,
I would like to start a new thread - How to get rid of bloatware on Xiaomi Redmi Note 2.
I bought RMN2 at Geekbuying.com and its MIUI is full of bloatware.
When opening a new tab in chrome browser sometimes a second/additional tab opens with new page.
e.g. (global.ymtracking.com/trace?offer_id=106438&aff_id=27742
d2c5yjc1pv3tab.cloundfront.net/apk/10848.apk1 )
redirecting to
phonebooster_546227637488bc7fd512af8a71adab1e.apk
which has ANDROID/Levida.A.Gen Add Ware Virus
I have also observed that some new apps were installed in background.
It is downloading 20150305011920.apk, 20151013045927.apk, 20141230064828.apk and installing Cleanmaster, APUS, UC Mini.
Android Version: 5.0.2 LRX22G
MIUI Version: 66.77.33.00(LHMCNCH) | Stable
How can I get rid of the bloatware?
a) flashing a new MIUI Version - please post a link to an eu version
b) removing infected apps?
I installed the beta miui 7 eu rom. It is great. Just changed the name and used update.
Search the forums for more info.

But 5.10.16 has a battery drain. I turned back to 5.10.8.
For those of us less than expert.........
I bought 2 of these Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 Smartphones. Malware, bloatware, battery sucking crap all preloaded and reloaded if I am lucky enough to uninstall it. I have flashed update ROMs from Ulefone and iOcean but this Miui ROM process may be over my head. You guys know of a tutorial site where they step through the process for newbies like me? (I need English, Google, Play Store, etc) thanks, dac

TRY " smiui " in google search.
OR go http://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-2/development/rom-smiui-rom-kitchen-major-xiaomi-t3225567

Good luck.
My screen is going double layered when it is cold and when i keep using it,it goes hot and goes all ok again
Noob question: do I download the weekly release ROM and rename it to "update.zip"? Is it that simple? And do I use the factory Mi Recovery to flash the updated rom? Where do I save the file? Into the "download" folder or just into the main internal storage?
Thank you!

The rom is not the real miui rom to my knowledge, you should change to the official rom
Hi everyone. I think bought a cooked phone to (seller echoice2016 on amazon.de, on the bill it said etotalk.com). I also experienced random opening of different tracking websites and I started thinking - I have a credit card attached to my google account and these ****ers could easily install keylogger.
So, ASAP I need to reflash something else. Now, I can't access recovery, all I see is this:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzuJV8WP2qMyNUFvSUhja2t0b0k/view?usp=sharing
Any hints, please? I'd also appreciate which ROM to use. I'd like a stable as stock as possible ROM with gapps but without MIUI email, calendar and other nonsense, because I want to use my own aps.
Thanks in advance!
RMN2 bloatware
Hi all
Complete noobie here
Just bought a RMN2 prime (2gb+32gb) which is currently running 5.0.2 LRX22G on MIUI 66.77.55.00(LHMCNCH) | Stable
I am getting so much bloatware and viruses, I need to change the OS.
Should I just download the Hermes (xiaomi.eu_multi_hermes_V7.0.6.0.LHMCNCI_v7-5.0.zip)
rename it as "update.zip"
load it onto my phone
restart (volume up + power)
Wipe
install?
... or is it more complex than that
Any help gratefully received

You can do this, bug after you will be unable to update. So, first install the xiaomi.eu developer rom
Then with flashify install the TWRP Recovery (check on xiaomi.eu the download, it's on the download page, scroll down). Then go to recovery and install the stable rom. After do a wipe data and cache.
You xan do the next updates with TWRP.
If you don't install the developer rom before you can't install the TWRP so you have to install a china developer, install the TWRP, install the update and do a wipe data.

Partner has just got the redmi 2 (8gig version) and has bloatware. can freeze it using titanium and all is well but would prefer a better rom(stock) what is the latest rom and where do we get it from?
Go to xiaomi.eu and go to the weekly ROM section
hi guys i'm a old school android geek that haven't mixed with android phones in some years now so consider me a noob and i have the Redmi note 2 prime 32gb version with spyware in it version miui 70 stable 7.0.99.99 LHFNYUN in android version 5.0.2 LRX22G.
and i wish someone to help me and give me detailed instructions to which rom to download and also how to flash and i need gapps to so please keep that in mind and i'm greatfull to the person that helps me.
i used the windroid program to install TWRP and superSU now so i need to look for a stable rom now to flash if you have any tips please tag me
but i can't say it was easy to use the windroid program to do it i needed the xiaomi pc suit drivers to be able to flash the stuff and i hope this helps other redmi note 2 pro users out there to root.
I'll post my experience with phone and the roms I tried.
I bought it from merimobiles and it came with plenty of Chinese apps, overall pretty annoying... So I installed the development version of miui 7 (china version). Less bloat, but still the ui was a bit laggy sometimes, battery ok. After awhile battery started to drain much quicker, charging was slow and it got warm during usage (browsing).
Then I installed the CM12.1 build 5 from needrom (cyanogenmod-3) There's a thread going on about it.
I am very happy with this build: much faster, charging is "normal", phone doesn't get warm (I don't play games). There are things which don't work (see the discussion on the thread) - e.g. led notification is only red, but they don't bother me, for what I need, it's great.

Cyanogenmod CM12.1 for unlocked bootloader

hey guys,
just wanted to tell you that at the miui forums there is already a cyanogenmod 12.1 ported for the redmi 3. its a zip to load via TWRP and only for unlocked bootloader.
its the 4th version and it's pretty much stable. been using the rom as a daily driver for 5 days now and everything worked so far. i havent tested every function but camera, gps, wifi, 4g data, bluetooth, etc works super fine. only thing is that battery life is superior on original miui rom. anyone interested in getting rid of miui check out the link.
http://en.miui.com/thread-249717-1-1.html
p.s. wipe phone first before installing CM.
p.p.s. don't forget 64bit gapps if you need it!

Great news!
How bad is the batterylife and is the pictures taken with the camera as good as with miui?
I dirty flashed this 4th version over the 3rd one. No need to flash gapps if you dirty flash from previous version.
There are 5 chinese apps, I froze them with titanium.
No issues so far. Been using the 3rd version about a week now.
So how is the battery life?
battery life with the 4th version is pretty much on par with miui now.
this cm comes with root (toggle in developer options) so i just uninstalled the 6 Chinese apps with system app remover.
What about camera quality, focus speed and HDR? Are those on par with MIUI?
Chinese user here! I flashed this ported CM 12.1 this morning. I also found the annoying existence of Baidu and 360 apps preinstalled in this rom. Because im not sure how xposed works with this ported CM 12.1, so i flashed back to MIUI 6.3.25 for there's a relatively stable xposed support
Using it for over 2 days now and I am impressed.
Its very stable and fully operational.
Apart from chineese apps pre-installed, theres not even one fault with it.
Battery and camera just fine, as on original MIUI.
Beauty and simplicity of CM was just what I needed for my Redmi3.
Cheers.
Does someone know if this will work on redmi 3 PRO?

Most likely, it wont. Even though phones have exactly same specs, you might find that there could be some differences in things like sensors, camera etc.
So yeah, it might boot, but you most likely will be annoyed by multiple things not working (including fingerprint sensor)
there are a few versions on the miui chinese forums (which I can read and translate), anyway what I've read is that 1 of the CM12.1 ROMs come with trojan horse (but scanned via a chinese security app 360 antivirus) - http://www.miui.com/thread-3980415-1-1.html (the user said she was on CM12.1 4th version)
Please do try a scan with your antivirus (on Android, I use Sophos) of choice just to be safe. I would do it but I'm still waiting for my bootloader to be unlocked.
What I've heard on the forum linked above is that development from cofface is trustworthy, hence I searched and indeed there is a CM12.1 ROM that was just uploaded. (http://www.miui.com/thread-3986022-1-1.html) It does not appear to come with any Chinese apps like the 4th version listed above. Maybe it's worth a try? (I'm not sure)
All CM12.1 versions:
http://www.miui.com/thread-3985299-1-1.html ROM dated 3/30, modded by Liberation, original by Flour_Mo (comes with Chinese apps)
http://www.miui.com/thread-3986022-6-1.html by Cofface (doesn't seem to have any bloatware)
http://www.miui.com/thread-3968326-1-1.html 4th version by Flour_Mo
CM 13 is also in the works but will take some time to become stable..
**apparently there is a buggy LED notification in all CM 12.1 builds

Thank you very much for clearing this up! I knew that there was something dodgy going on with those Roms!!! All the crap they are saying about "how we should use those apps and support devs" did sound like pile of sh*t to me. Someone from here really should post some screenshots of AV scans there and expose those bastards. It's really annoying that someone is even trying to do that...

When I was trying cm builds, the performance was actually really good. But somehow I started to like miui about free RAM, there was around 1.2 gigs available, I think. That decreases to 1 gig after you install gapps.

Go to miui forums and people usually re-post Roms to some other *drive website like gdrive again, I do not recommend using any of those scammy Roms until it is clarified that Roms are actually clean and legit

i think some of the developers there are legit (like the rooted ROM on this forum by greatslon and TWRP recovery by cofface http://www.miui.com/thread-3917207-1-1.html), not to worry, I believe it might even be false positives, since the AV scan is from a Chinese AV app (360 security) so... there is a chance its reporting false positives. Just have to see the response from those who have already flashed the ROMs. As for links to download, alright, will try to re-upload those ROMs or post the link to download here. Its actually pretty safe to register your phone number because its linked to the MIUI servers (the Chinese like to use phone numbers as a way to access many features, such as Airport WIFI etc)
To those wondering how to see the download links - its like the english version of the MIUI forums. you will have to set up a forum account, then comment once to gain "experience" and then the download link is revealed.
Hello guys, unfortunately I can't move my apps to the SD card. I have a UHS class 10 64Gb SD Card.
It says that I don't have enough space, while I have a lot, like 57Gb free.
Is anyone having the same problem, if not, how can I solve it anyway?

Sorry, I probably should have explained more what I meant.
cofface is a legit dev, who seems to be doing a great job for out little community.
But other devs, who do stuff like pre-installing some weird apps... I honestly cannot think of any excuses of why they are doing that, apart from spying/collecting your address books/etc.
So yeah, the only rom to try is cofface's at this moment. But then again, I can't seem to find any download link in that Chinese thread.
Anywho, I'm looking forward seeing cm13 on our phones, which is pretty exciting. And hopefully Android N in a near future ^^

I've posted the ROM in the xda forum and uploaded the ROM on google drive and MEGA. here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-3/development/rom-cm12-1-redmi-3-t3348916
the forum functions like the english miui forums where you have to create an account (your english miui account will do fine) and comment before you can see the download link! and the pre-installed apps are the chinese alternatives to the google apps that they don't have access to. If I'm not wrong.

Some help understanding my Redmi 3

Hi guys,
Long time Android user here - I've recently sold my Blackberry Priv and have picked up a Redmi 3. I'm struggling to wrap my head around the ROM terminology for this device.
- I am based in the UK, I can see in my device settings that I am on a 'Global' ROM
- I can see that there is a 7.3 version of miui available for this device, but cant find a reliable download source (currently running 7.2.7.0.0 - LHPCNDB)
- Will Miui 8 be released for this device (Global?)
- If I choose to flash the device with a Chinese version, what will the differences in the software be?
- The BL unlocking processes confuses me - do I literally need to send a request to Xiaomi for this to be done or can I do it via a tool?
I think this is all for now - I'd appreciate some help clearing up the above questions.

Hi guys,
Long time Android user here - I've recently sold my Blackberry Priv and have picked up a Redmi 3.

There is no official global rom for this device at the moment. Your rom seems to be a cooked room by the seller.
Official rom comes with English and Chinese only (and a lot of Chinese useless apps)
My suggest is to flash official developer rom (you need the developer rom to unlock bootloader), unlock bootloader (yes you need to apply for it to Xiaomi). Once unlocked, install twrp and a stable unofficial eu rom (this one has no OTA but is clean off Chinese apps).
If you have the no-pro version, you can also try the CM12 from this forum. It seems to be a very good rom.

You should apply to unlock your bootloader first; just make a Mi Account and go through the process. You might have to wait a few days (I waited 6). Some good tutorials are available on the MIUI forums or here on XDA.
After you've unlocked the bootlader, the next step is to flash a custom recovery such as TWRP (also on XDA), then a custom ROM of your choice. I reccommend installing xiaomi.eu if you live in Europe for the good localizations. Otherwise you can install the Chinese Stable / Dev ROM at your choosing; it has English language but some of the Chinese apps might annoy you. MIUI8 has been released for the Chinese developer ROM, and therefore the xiaomi.eu custom ROM which uses it as base. A CM 12.1 build is also available on XDA if you're into that, although it has some bugs regarding the camera, fingerprint sensor, and GPS.

Is it true that leeco phones will not receive update?

Is it true that leeco phones will not receive android 7 ?
Sent from my Le X820 using Tapatalk
Why?
Do you have any source for this? How do you know?
NOT TRUE - http://www.droid-life.com/2017/01/06/leeco-expect-software-updates-soon-address-user-pain-points/
yes, but he does not speak of nougat
I was just reading that you won't be able to receive any updates with international stock rom installed.
Is that really true? I can't find any option in settings to search or install any updates.
I am kind of happy with the international stock rom. No Chinese apps installed, no bloatware (so far found) and google play store is working.
Thanks!

What do you mean under international stock rom? Could you be more specific?
There are so called "webshop" roms, which are - as you can see in the name - modified by the online stores. Those roms are based on Indian version of eui , installed lots of bloatwares, multilanguages are contained. These are not official roms, not gonna be updated.
You should consider installing offical chinese/indian rom, which is gonna be updated for sure.

A user can always update the shop rom with the latest official rom via recovery. The easiest way to do it.

I am not really sure if I am running a Shop ROM. Just bought the phone from Gearbest.
I just thought that the Indian Version is the international version with multilanguage. I have LeEco Store installed and 3-4 other apps. But it really seams to be a Shop ROM because of the missing update option.

Can you explain what to do?
Just download the latest Indian version than rename it to update.zip and put it in the root folder and after that Power + Vol + and thats it?
I just dont want to lose German language on the phone. It is for my mother so usability is the most important, you know.
Thank you guys in advance!

Guess you are right. But you won't get OTA updates, if you use webshop rom. I didn't get neither.

Very simple. Yes.
I have Deutsch in my latest official Chinese 20s.
So does it mean that I can flash/update eather Indian or Chinese ROM just over the shop ROM without losing any data and language?
Sounds too easy for me
Yes, its easy like that i upgraded from shop rom to 21S Chinese - and I was wondering that german is better supported in 21S Chinese then in the germanized shoprom version ... only bad thing was - i lost the google play store.

And to get back Google Play Store you have to download it in LeEco store or just install the Indian version instead of the Chinese, right?
... or use this one -> https://xiaomininja.com/2016/07/15/...l-google-play-services-on-miui-8-video-guide/
I installed the cookie version 92 2 works fine. After wipe wipe data, flash with twrp and is done. Try. The zip file is called
X820_TWRP_ADVANCED_V3.1.1_CUOCO92. ZIP
yes but i heard leeco engineering work on android 7
Heyyo, yeah that international EUI ROM is modified and won't get OTA hence the check for updates is missing.
For my x829 I couldn't upgrade to Indian or Chinese EUI directly via the recovery and update.zip. It would give an error message about file errors. Only way for me to flash other ROMs was to use TWRP via temp boot via fastboot and then flash other ROMs.
I ended up not liking even newer EUI versions so now I use custom ROMs as they have a better setup with the more like Stock Android experience with the quick settings in the notification drawer.
It's still hard to tell if LeEco will be able to follow through with Nougat for their phones due to all the financial issues they have... But meh, tbh I'm not worried given how darn good community ROMs are and how they don't have the odd quirks that EUI have.
Albeit, it would be nice if they at least put out kernel sources for Nougat (or I guess Android O which will be out sooner than later) which could improve community ROMs a bit

It was said by January. Still they didn't released an update :crying:
Last update i got was on 14th October 2016. When ever i send a mail asking about the next update they respond like we will inform in a week or two. But they never did. By the end of march they said that they are working on android 7 but it will take more time. They said expected release will be july last week. I mailed again now. No responses from them.
I like the EUI very much. I don't want to install some custom rom. But same time, this thing have lot of bugs and many futures need modification.

A moderator on the Xiaomi Forum just confirmed that you have a fake ROM. It seems that some resellers are flashing these fake global ROMs in order to sell them as Global.
Well, AFAIC i definitely would like to try this 'fake' ROM. Mine may be very real but also very much in chinese/english only. I wouldnt mind for myself, but my mother not so much. I'm pretty sure this is basically a reseller's modified CN ROM in order to sell as global with added languages.

can you have unlock bootloader and installer twrp and backups for me this rom
please
I received my mi pad 4 with this 'fake' global rom.
I've been using it all day and it's pretty good. It's miui but with integrated Google play out of the box.
If it is just the CN version with Google play services pre-installed then I'll stick with it for now. I don't have the ability to check if there are nefarious modifications made to this rom, but I know I'm taking a risk on it. Also I'm pretty sure there will be no over the air updates for it which is a bummer.
If there was a xiaomi.eu rom available I would flash that straight away.
The official CN image: does this include English at least?
In my opinion, I don't use this unknow chinese mod rom because she maybe contain malware.
Just use official MIUI rom or custom rom made by a good dev like in XDA.
