This is the first phone that I and probably a lot of people have owned with the NFC chip. I have been digging around on the phone and reading about it on the internet but I still have some unanswered questions. I know it takes two chips to tango so there may not be much information or many users with experience with the technology out there, but any info would be appreciated.
1. What native capabilities/apps does the DNA have to utilize this chip? - Found the setting for it under settings>more
2. What apps on the Google Play store are good to use for this?
3. Any tips/tricks/interesting uses people have found for it?
4. Any other pertinent information.

Some people on the Galaxy Nexus forum started writing their own NFC tags. My friend fooled around with it, and made some tags that opened things like Facebook and Gmail when scanned.

Take a look at the app nfc task launcher. You can buy some nfc tags and program them to automate all sorts of tasks and activities on your phone.
There are a few other nfc apps to play around with.

Where is a good place or who is a good manufacturer for these tags?

There are a lot of useful/cool things you can do with NFC Tags. Most revolve around automation.
On my website, I keep a list of the NFC Apps that I find work the best and are most useful (there are a ton of nfc apps on google play, but many of them are useless or just not built well). Here's the link to that list: http://www.andytags.com/nfc-apps.html
On other pages, I have list of ideas of things you can do as well as some videos demoing some of the apps/uses. If you use Tasker, then the possibilities are endless since Tasker can do almost anything. But even without tasker many of the apps will do the things you'd want to do most.

Tasker looks amazing.. has anyone tried it on their DNA? Some people were mentioning compability issues so I just wanted to see if anyone here had any experience with it.

I finally bought some Mifare 4k NFC tags and tried some stuff with NFC Task launcher from the app store. I programmed one to open Pandora that I can scan when I get in my truck and another to toggle airplane mode for my building at work. I haven't gotten a lot of use it of them though because they are a little problematic to scan. Sometimes it takes several seconds. I can just unlock my phone and start an app in that amount of time. Not sure if it's the tags, the chip in the phone, or both.

Tasker works fine for me, I have it set up to detect when my phone is wireless charging.
Are there any ROMs or Apps designed for use with a phone for kids in the 10-14yo range? I would like for my child to have a phone for emergencies and i was going to pass down my old one, but i can't really find much to lock it down with. All i have really been able to find are "sandbox" apps such as kids mode, kids place, or the like that allow specific apps, but disable all cell/wifi features. These are more designed for letting your toddler play with your personal phone, which isn't what i'm looking for. What i am looking for is to still be able to have cell/wifi, but include: Approved/unlocked apps. Disable the dialer and restrict outbound calls to a predefined, non-editable list. Limited or no marketplace access. Lockout on settings.
There are a lot of tablets that i have seen designed with kids in mind that do this kind of stuff and I've seen similar phones like Kajeet or Firefly, but that would require the purchase of a phone, which i already have and a separate plan. There's stuff like cheap flip phones, but that would still need to be acquired and I figure with all the fun stuff Androids can do they will make sure they carry it around with them.
there was once an app call kytephone.com that did exactly this, but they where only around for like 6 months and then shut down. while the app can still be found in some places and side loaded, its no longer on play store, but it required internet access and a login to launch. since they are shut down, you can't create accounts or login anymore so even a side loaded version is useless.
If it could be done with separate apps to lock down stuff, that would be good too. I know the play store has content filtering and PIN for purchases, there also seem to be plenty of child friendly browsers out there for web filtering, and i could use app lock to lock out settings, but the difficulty i found was with the contact list and dialer.
I would prefer to stay with the stock ROM to keep T-Mobiles wifi calling, but if there's a custom ROM for this, that would work also.
Any thoughts, ideas or suggestions?

Ok, I wouldn't call myself a fanboy but I'm pretty in to the Samsung ecosystem. Note 2, 3, 4. Original Galaxy Gear, Tv's and now the Gear S. Coming from the O.G. Galaxy gear, I thought the Gear S was a worthy upgrade. Water resistance, bigger and brighter screen. I have been very patient with Samsung and them rolling out apps to there watches. The Galaxy Gear never really got the apps I wanted unless I hacked it and cracked it with android apps made for phones. That kind of held me down for a bit. Then it just got too cumbersome for a watch. Especially with Nova Launcher and the battery drain was horrible because it just wasn't optimized to run like a phone. Here comes the Gear S, to solve all our problems. It just seems like the same old crap to me. Don't get me wrong, I really like the watch. For notifications and an occasional news feed it works awesome. Even the pedometer and the fitness functions seem to work better. But with the looming release of the Apple Watch I have to ask. Where the hell are the apps?!! I'm already hearing about all the different apps and developers working on the Apple Watch apps. I have a feeling its going to be another lopsided battle like it used to be with Android and Apple in the appstore a few years back. But why?! Samsung has had, damn near, a 2 year head-start in this category. You mean to tell me after releasing 5-6 Smart watches that they still cant conjure up any app support? I see the same old half baked apps in the app store everyday. No popular apps like facebook, youtube, instagram (there is a fake one that might be ok). It just seems as though samsung doesn't follow all the way through.
I know they are working on the next big thing, but I feel like we have all been left in the dark by buying another Samsung experiment. Its not fun being the guinea pig anymore.
Have a look down the back of the sofa... you'll be amazed what you can find there.
It's a watch, with the addition of gear notification extender installed I'm struggling to think of anything more I need/want it to do. My note 4 is superior in every way so the watch is just for a glance or a response on the fly.

I still think it's better than the Apple Watch because you don't have to have your phone with you. All those stupid apps mean nothing when you're working with a 2 inch screen.

I agree with OP, I would like more apps. In fact, I already gave up checking for new ones.
If I receive a notification that a friend posted something on facebook, I want to see what they posted. If they uploaded a picture, I want to see that too.
I want to respond to what's app messages and not just receive them!
I do love the smartthings app that let's me turn on/off lights from my wrist, that is awesome !
Google is working on iOS compatibility for android wear devices, I so wished the Gear S could be fully compatible with my work iPhone6 and my Note 3... Sort of have the Gear become the hub manager for all my devices...

Xenozu Player for Youtube, works well. click on pic to play, and text for info
GearTweet for Twitter, much improved lately
GearGram for Instagram and plays video as well as shows pics
Basic Video Player, load videos to your Gear through PC to play on app
Wearable Widgets, I can use it to control my lights at home that on on my WeMo switches, using WeMo widgets; I can see my outside surveillance cameras using the IP Cam Viewer Basic widget
IPCameraViewer, I can see my indoor home surveillance camera feed through Gear S app
OperaMini for web browsing
Milk music for streaming to my bluetooth headset at the gym, without having to carry my phone.
S Health, I have used very well to track and motivate myself to move and exercise more. I lost 85 lbs. last year and it gets some credit. Program finally much better than it was.
I too hope they push for more, but in the end it will be up the the other companies and developers and they will probably go to Apple due to shear volume of sales alone.

I have the same extra apps as you. I have wemo switches and a foscam camera outside. The ip camera app is great because it doesn't need to be paired to a phone

I agree with the original post. The watch falls short of its potential. I generally use my phone for most types of communication. There are times, like in my car, when grabbing a phone is impractical. This is particularly true if my wife calls and reminds me of something I need to do in the future. With my Gear 1 I could double press and add a calendar reminder, no problem. I could controll Pandora which was great with a headset in my Miata with the top down. Cousin Sammy is trying to make Tizen into their version of i-something and they are losing sight of the consumer. Stop giving me watch faces and give me some interaction with my phone apps. That would fulfil my interpretation of their promise when I bought it as a companion device. Sammy watch should work well with a Sammy phone.

This is off topic, but how did you control Pandora on your Gear 1?
On the stock setup, I turned on Pandora via my phone and put it away. The music control on the watch would control volume and I could skip songs. Couldn't change favorites but it worked OK otherwise.

Don't know that I need such an app. But I love your standalone way of thinking. I see no reason why I should need a companion app.

The main reason why we need a companion app is that the smartwatch is a very limited computing platform so far: reduced screen, no keyboard (the Gear S is a big exception to the rule with the Fleksy keyboard and its 2" screen), tiny speakers, few memory and limited storage in general.
In a companion mode, the main app processes information on the smartphone using its power and connectivity capabilities (again the Gear S is another exception to the rule with BlueTooth, 3G, Wi-Fi and USB). The smartwatch app only displays information or performs some interaction with the user.
The Companion design is very useful for many apps where the smartwatch lacks of the power or interaction needed. But it drains battery at the same time to the watch and to the phone. The Wi-Fi connection is better in saving power especially in idle mode. You are lucky again if you have a Gear S and you can synchronize your smartwatch via Wi-Fi!
Because, the Gear S exhibits a tremendous autonomy as a computer platform, I choose it for my future standalone apps!

Agree with needing stand-alone apps. Can you create an audiobook app with bookmarking and 15 second forward/backward skip functionality? I go running with my Gear S and gave up on trying to listen to audiobook because I keep losing my place in the books

There is not one audiobook app in the app store, and other Gear S owners have asked for the same type of app, with the addition of sleep timer functionality within the app.
My books are all MP3 (between 7-14 files per book) that I copy into the music folder. Since each file is around 50 mins long, bookmarking and skipping back and forth is imperative. The app would need to know to play back files within a subdirectory as one book.
I tried to use the regular music app, but gave up, because I kept losing my place in the books
