Marshmallow experiences? - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Post real life experiences with stock version of final M.
Still waiting for OTA.

Marshmallow is way better than Lollipop. I am waiting for new method to root it.

there already is (elemental)

It certainly does fix a lot of the lag around the UI as it also does on the Nexus 6. All in all a pretty good update, although I can't comment on battery life yet.

Before I give my thoughts I should point out that at this point I'm wondering if something was wrong with my N9 on Lollipop....
So far M has improved my experience with my N9 roughly eleventy billion percent. Some previous issues I had with tablet were:
- If any app(s) were updating... set it down and come back later. It was completely unusable while apps were updating and they took forever. My N4 remains completely usable and apps installed WAY faster
- Rebooting was a similar situation. I dreaded rebooting my tab (even though it would briefly perform much better) because of the amount of time it took
- General slowness/lag/reloading of apps. Every time I used my tab it would just have moments where it would stall out.... so if I was swiping between pages on my home screen I'd see part of one and part of the other and it would sit there for a second or two. Often if I was reading an article in the newsstand app and wanted to view it in the browser I would debate if I wanted to wait for it to load (obviously worse the more tabs that were open). I could be in Chrome reading XDA or something and then go out to reply to a single hangouts message and then go back to chrome and have to wait as it once again reloads everything
- Random battery drain. Sometimes I'd charge it to full and just leave it sitting on my nightstand and come back a day later and its at like 60%
So far in Marshmallow (granted its only been about 24 hours) every one of those issues seems to have been completely fixed. Its sort of mind boggling actually. Previously when I grabbed the tablet I prepared myself for an exercise in frustration. Now I pick it up with that same worry but after mere seconds of using it I completely forget about it and just zip around as one would expect. I was initially quite unhappy with my purchase and have sort of been keeping an eye out for a good deal on another tab but if my N9 stays working like it is now I will have no reason to bother looking around

I sideloaded the OTAs a few days ago. After some sporadic but reasonably heavy use, initial comments are:
-- Memory management is better. I can now consistently have 3-4 Chrome tabs open without tab refreshing. This was my only real complaint about the N9 previously, and 6.0 appears to have cured (or significantly mitigated) it.
-- I really like being able to tweak the quick settings panel via the UI Tuner to get rid of stuff I rarely use. (Press and hold the gear icon in the quick settings panel to reveal the UI tuner in the full settings menu (right by developer options).)
-- I can't believe they took the time/energy to modify the notifications shade so that it pulls down from where your finger swipes, instead of always from the middle. Seems an utter waste of time but what do I know.
-- I don't see a huge difference in battery life. But, I have things set so that very few apps have push notifications active so doze doesn't really have my use case in mind. Battery life is certainly not worse.
-- I like having an actual date on the security update status.
-- On tap is nice, I suppose, but not really groundbreaking.
-- Love, love, love the permissions control. So far I have turned off some permissions for a number of older apps not coded for 6.0, and gotten the warning about the apps not being coded for it, but the apps still seem to work. I just wish you could fine tune the permissions grouped by app instead of grouped by permissions (i.e., see a list of controls per app, instead of a list of controls for each app under each permission). Am I missing that somewhere?
-- Overall, there are some refinements/improvements and it does not appear to have introduced any bugs. That is a successful update in my book.

+1 to everything you said. The stand by time is amazing on both my N9 and N5. Just a few percent loss over night and through half the next day. I'm very pleased.

I've been very pleased with Marshmallow. Lollipop was incredibly frustrating on my N9- I've rarely used it over the last 5 months due to it being extremely unresponsive, particularly in Chrome. It's much better now- but I have to wonder how much of the improvement was due to starting fresh (I flashed a factory image) versus improvements in Marshmallow itself. It's only been a couple days, so we'll see how it holds up over the next month.
As others have noted, battery life during actual use doesn't seem any better, but stand-by time for me is greatly improved. There's very little drain over night.

[Q] Help! Battery While Sleeping

Long time lurker, first poster
So the quick/dirty is my tablet's seeming to loose battery rapidly during 'sleep' (hit
power button, screen off). Not always, but sometimes.. Atleast ~10% per 8 hours, about 20% in ~3 hours in the attached BetteryBatteryStats (was away, didn't touch it, went from ~42% to 22%), is this normal?
The first time I noticed it the tablet was at about 72 pct (then I slept), 8 hours later it was sub 30. My phone was next to it in comparison went from 98 to 92 during the same period.
I've not rooted the tablet but I installed the GoLauncher, nothing in the battery stats (attached) seem to jump out at me, other than the WiFi waking it up 291 times?
Do I need to manually disable WiFi every time I hit the power button?
What kind of idle times are you guys seeing?
I'm pretty sure if I left this sitting for ~34 hours it'd be dead, seems kinda crazy that it can't get better standby time then that, my Droid Incredible sitting idle can last at least 3 days and that's fetching email and facebook messenger. In fact I think that's a deal breaker and i'll be returning this thing if I don't see improvement, the tablet's a quick/handy thing to use now and again, but if I have to wait about as long as it takes my laptop to start up (full bootup) then I don't see much use.
I had a similar problem. A full day of light usage and it's down to under 50%. I had to charge every day. Battery usage said it's mostly the wifi.
So I installed "Juice Defender plus" ($2) from android market. And set it to let the defender automatically enable and disable wifi, plus let it auto disable wifi after one minute if it's not connected to a network. Also set it to disable connectivity in the middle of the night.
After nearly 2 days of slightly above my normally light usage, the battery is still at over 70%.
please check the other thread regarding the battery life. I did a factory restore, and it seems to improve battery performance.

I'll give that a shot and report back, kind of a pain to have to do that after just a few days, worries me long term
In regards to the Juice App, i'm not really interested in rooting ATM, not sure if i'm sold on this thing yet, the potential is there but there are several things I just can't get used to on it yet, like navigating around apps (lack of back button, bar being on the bottom), and terribly missing the optical sensor (droid incredible) and auto complete. And B&N's App Store is a pretty sad sight in comparison.

At least on your last point, one of the best reasons to root is to gain access to the android and amazon marketplace. Forget the B&N store, except for maybe books.
Disabling the BN cloud service seems to increase the battery life a lot. I used app quarantine to disabled the service.

What do you have syncing? I have nothing on this except Go Launcher, Amazon Store, Solataire and MXPlayer. No email or social networks going and mine lost 4% while sleeping for 8 hours.

We had a problem almost exactly like this when the first GB kernels were being ported over to the SGS. The solution was to toggle the WiFi sleep policy to anything then set it to "Never."
This should help with a lot of the wake-up/plugged-in drain that you are experiencing.

[Q] No Bloat, No Sense... No Batteries?

First time poster, long time lurker...
As far as I can find, I have not seen this issue come up for anyone else. I recently jumped in with the temp root to clean up the bloat and to de-sense. Process went great and everything that I attempted to freeze is froze.
To my dismay, the last two days (since I performed the clean up) my battery life has taken a severe turn for the worse. With screen off I'm losing about 10% an hour, which is way more than before. I used to easily get a day at the office, but now a morning is a lot to ask.
I've checked the usual suspects, and have gone as far as uninstalling any new apps that I've installed since the root. All to no improvement.
I suppose my next step is to re-bloat to see if that brings me back to where I was. But before I go that far, has anyone seen or heard of this problem? If I'm the only one, I suspect my cause and effect is off. I fully expected this to help the ol' battery... But its been the opposite.
I have the exact same problem, I am going to factory reset mine as soon as I have time to set everything up again.
My battery life has literally dropped in half.
~John
Bummer, exactly what I was trying to avoid. Oh well, that's the risk we take I guess.
With all the memory and speed this phone has there is no reason to freeze anything. I can live with bloatware until I get s-off.
When you go freezing apps you alter the way the phone operates. You could have frozen something that the system needed to operate using less
Power. Now your phone works harder and uses a lot more power. This phone is faster and smoother than any rooted phone I ever owned.

True statement. One of the reasons I have not updated my temp root script to include de-sensing is because every time I try it it runs like crap. Seems like it just struggles looking for things the framework expects to be there.
Ah, the voice of reason! You are right, I was tottaly content until I started f'n around with the insides. Ill unfreeze it all tonight and keep my fingers crossed that I don't end up needing to reset.

Agreed... This phone is a beast with an OEM extended battery. I used %40 in 14 hours with my standard usage, which includes about 30 mins worth of calls, receiving emails and texting.

+1, i'm very satisfied with the stock battery on daily use.
When I travel, I throw in the extended battery and I'm watching an entire season of Arrested Development, no problem :x
I haven't desensed, and I only froze some of the bloatware, like the friendstream, nfl mobile...etc. that were in the app's folder, just to keep it clean, but I've learned I just crowd it up again as soon as I start downloading apps No task killers either, just use the one that shipped with it to kill some lingering apps now and then.

I was actually using your tool... appreciate your work on that, it's flawless as far as I can tell. Was going to thank you over on the development board but being an XDA noob I was not allowed!
I thawed everything out and will see tomorrow if I'm back to where I should be. If so, I may give your recommended list a try and see what that brings. I was really liking not having to see all that crapware everywhere I turned.
That is the reason I didn't use the de-sense option. I only froze some of the bloat that i really didn't use. I was afraid that if I de-sensed, it would cause more problems than it fixed.
I started a thread where I gave a long list of freezeable apps, it's linked in one of the stickies in the dev section, and I have left them all frozen. Something like 30 apps frozen. I have NOT de sensed though. I lose 1-2% an hour while idle, though the first 10% from 100 to 90 lasts much longer (complete opposite of my old Dinc which would drop the first 10% in ten mins!)
Well, I bit the bullet and factory reset tonight. We'll see how my battery fares tomorrow.
I had ADWLauncher installed before with a theme and custom icons etc. I left all that out this time.
I do like Sense quite a bit (I love the widgets) so I'm sticking with that for now.
I have two extended batteries I bought with the phone and originally my battery life was outstanding. I could stream audio all day at work (switching between iheart and Sirius) and still have battery life on my way home.
This is outstanding, no other phone I have owned could do that. Lately, my battery life is in the toilet however. I killed an extended battery in a half a day.

definitley looking forward to hearing about the results to the factory reset. i haven't had great battery life but i've also temp root and cleaned pretty soon after getting the phone, so i don't have too much to compare to.

Let us know how it goes, I'll do the same. I used my freeze script to thaw it all out... hopefully I can leave this thing on my desk for a couple hours tomorrow so I can get some good data on idle usage. Fingers crossed it goes back to the way it was.
I have actually been using Go since day one. I never really tried sense, but it drives me nuts not having a dock bar... I think we can all admit the bar at the bottom is a waste of space. Anyway, I played with it a little tonight and it seems super smooth with good looking widgets (as you mentioned). I may have to get it all set up sometime and see if I can get over my dock bar hang-up.
I had the same battery problem as you and I have yet to even temp root my phone(I run Windows 8 Dev Preview, drivers are unsupported). I don't even play games on my phone and had the same issue. It isn't a root/bloat/de-sense issue.
AtL, that battery chart looks painful. Read the issues list if you haven't already... Some folks have reported battery life like that and ended up trading in and getting one that behaved a little better.
As for my issue, after half a day it looks like thawing everything out was the ticket. This chart vs the one in the OP clearly shows a much slower idle draw. I think I'm back to only charging once a day.
So let that be a lesson to everyone... Be careful of what you think you don't want.
The factory reset seems to have helped some, but it's still not back to where it used too be. I have been streaming iheart all day on 4g using an extended battery. I got probably 6 hours out of the 1st battery & I'm down to 80% on the 2nd battery now.
I think the 4g network may be partly to blame in that I think my higher battery useage started almost exactly when the national 4g outage occured.

I have been here a while bud. I was just posting to show that I had the same issue while NOT using Temp Root or anything you had used in your experience of the problem. This has only happened to me 1 time.
Debloated with no issues
If you know what your doing and have exp with this debloating / desensing will have only positives on your battery. Im pretty sure that horrid battery life had nothing to do with debloating. And as the OP stated it only proved mild imrpovements aftyer hard reset. Unlikely debloat caused that.
Took phone off charger this AM
would explain why when I had the rezound, the battery life started out great, then get beyond terrible.

Awful battery life?

Hi all,
Got my 920 a few days ago, and while it's a beautiful phone, I'm finding the battery life to be awful.
I've only installed a few apps on it, otherwise it's vanilla. With WiFi and GPS off and only moderate Internet usage (mostly Facebook and IM+) i get a max of 10 hours out of it.
My Galaxy Note easily does twice that with the same usage.
Is there anything I need to check/look for, are there apps that show what's chewing through my battery so much?
I love the phone but that sort of battery life means it can never replace my Note as my main phone.
Thanks!
I should add, it's running the Portico update. No crashes or random reboots that I've seen.
I have only had mine for a few days, but I have found with all WP8 devices (and I have tried most) a hard reset made a difference to battery life. Annoying, but true it seems, well, true for me. I have no idea if it is a placebo but might be worth trying if you can be bothered.
For your info, I am getting good battery life on my 920.
You need to discharge and recharge the battery a few times before the battery life gets better. In about a week you should find the battery life improves.
It was the same for WP7 too..... The software will calibrate the battery over time.

I actually did a hard reset when I first got the phone home, out of habit really. I don't mind doing it again, but maybe I'll give the battery a few more days and see what happens.
Also check your background apps.
it'll get better
when I first got my lumia 920 the battery life was shorter than my old NL 900.. but after a week or so and after I did a deep cycle now the battery will easily last for 48 hours... in battery settings it usually shows 4-5 days :good:
battery life is hit or miss, some days you'll get wonderful battery life and others its horrible, I know that its hard to measure battery life because you just cant replicate the exact same usage everyday. I find it hard to believe that the galaxy s3 (basically the same hardware) has better battery life, battery is only 100 maH more.
I honestly believe its a operating system/ application issue, I believe that there are some applications that are cycling and wasting precious juice from the battery. better coded apps/ better OS control will really be a big deal in the next os upgrade.

I've found turning off background tasks which are not required makes a big difference on the battery. Each time I install a new app, I look at the background tasks and see that it doesn't get added. Only tasks I have running are weather and a news reader app.
Also, I will not allow location on apps that don't need to. Searching for location when an app opens also drains a battery somewhat.
That being said, with my use, I easily get 2+ days (48+ hrs) of battery life.
May be it have to be synced
In my opinion, one reason why this phone need the run in for the battery life is in the first few days it need to be synced with many clouds, facebook, facebook photo, nokia drive....etc. As this will make poor the battery life in the first run in. But after one week everything done, the battery life becomes better. Just guess.
I've also noticed that with bluetooth turned off I get substantial more life out of the battery(but I tend to forget to turn it on when getting in my car, then I dont get calls on my cars bluetooth). I agree with disabling push and do a manual poll on your email servers, I dont have facebook or any of that stuff on the phone. Im mainly on twitter and on my email.
from time to time I see the Location services running when I unlock the phone, I've disabled the location service on bing search but that still comes up from time to time. Like I mentioned before I think the OS has tons of pros and like any other OS in its "early stages"(I say this because windows mobile has been out for some time pre iOS and Android, but it will get better over time as the company realizes main stream OS are getting replaced as the go to home PC.
My experience with Nokia Phones is they need 1 or 2 weeks to get the full battery life....
The first 4-5 days they really have a horrible battery live.. But as I said it's getting better after 1-2 weeks...
BTW I'm really impressed with the battery life of my HTC 8S, I'm getting 2-3 days out of it with heavy usage...
My Lumia 920 achieves a little bit more than 1 day..
I've had the phone since it was released(when it really bad battery problems), I was going to go with the 8x but I really love the camera on the lumia 920.....
Ok for the past two days I've been using my phone with bluetooth off and i've been getting really good battery life, a friend of mine has a surface rt and he was having an issue with the battery depleting even when he left the device on sleep for hrs, he noticed that after disabling bluetooth the issue with the battery went away, this clearly points out an issue with the os and the handling of Bluetooth.
Surface RT and Lumia 920 have a totally different OS i don't think you can compare them that easy...
And it well known the Bluetooth deceases the battery life of every smartphone... It's the same with NFC (Tap&Send) and super sensitive touch or Wifi...
Just turn off the things you don't need...
My Samsung Note 10.1 tablet has no noticeable difference with Bluetooth on or off (that is, not actually using it, just having it enabled). It's using BT 4.0 which has very good power efficiency.
Any idea what revision of BT our Lumias have?
It also makes a difference if you switch your bluetooth on to be visible or not...
Ii is the same with Wifi you can activate to be notified when open networks are around... If you do so.. your wifi will use more power because it is constantly searching for new hotspots...
Well, it's been a few days & recharges, and it seems the battery is getting better.
Thanks for all the suggestions from everyone. I was severely disappointed with the initial battery life, and while it's getting better, I hope it keeps improving. Switching background data services such as push mail and chat makes sense when it comes to preserving battery of course, but so far from all the smartphones I've owned, this is the worst performing of all in terms of battery. I don't want to have to manually check mail or log in/out of chat, since that defeats the purpose of having a smartphone imho.
It's the only thing I have against the Lumia so far... even though WP8 is not as customisable as my Android phone, I certainly appreciate the design and how it works. I'll just keep crossing fingers for more battery conditioning
I think there is something like a help app from nokia on the phone...
You can disable the live tiles you don't use and the automatic xbox live sync service...
I wouldn't totally disable email sync... I just reduce the syncing interval...
If you have a lot of email accounts (maybe more) it even makes sense forwarding them all to a new email account and syncing all your emails
with this 1 account...
There are a lot of dirty little tricks to improve your battery life... Maybe every
single one don't make much difference... But all of them do...
With a lot of frustration, I have been experiencing high battery drain also, with the phone staying warm even while idle.
Following various comments, fixes, could be' on various forums, I hard reset my new, less than one week old, phone.
I was kind of annoyed, surprised it took a very long time to recover, with a picture of gears churning on the screen.
Finally it booted up with a message, reset or restore. Wasn't expecting the choice. I chose restore to see what's up.
There was an amazing amount of stuff to restore.
After restore completed, my phone was still having battery drain issues. I decided to check out what this back up and restore thing was.
Pardon me I never read the manual. No need to go into discussion of the process.
I then chose to disable back up and restore, soft reset, and boom. Battery usage is now at -2%/hr. instead of -12-20% idle.
Have any of you tried this?

Battery Woes

About a week and a half ago, my battery went from draining ten percent in a typical day (hour to an hour and a balf of constant use, browsing Facebook, web, email - if I really went ham I might go down in the 80s) to easily closing in on the 50s if not more.
I've tried several factory resets, gotten the lollipop upgrade that just hit, removed apps, upgraded apps - nothing. I'm on stock and haven't had this phone more than a month. Android System is typically the worst offender for battery usage according to the settings monitor.
Please help. I was so impressed and now I'm at a loss.
If you've done factory resets, then I would say, factory reset again and stay on stock apps. Don't install anything else. Monitor what happens with your battery life. My guess is, if you have installed other apps since doing the factory reset, it's an app that is misbehaving, even though you see android system being the main culprit. More than likely, it could be an app that isn't releasing resources correctly or hasn't been updated to run correctly with LP. That usually points to a sign of improper programming, or they haven't update their app yet to perform correctly under LP.
If things are running fine on stock, start adding your apps back one by one. Install one app, leave it for a few days and see what happens. if battery life stays the same, then move onto the next app. Hopefully, you'll find the app that's giving you issues.
If even with just stock apps you are having the issue, then it might be a hardware issue, possibly even battery. But, if it's been working fine before the LP update, I highly doubt that. My best guess is it's a misbehaving app.
I'm still having problems with nothing else but stock apps, unfortunately. The problem started shortly before the update - does that support that it's more hardware or more software related? The phone is still fairly new and though I know that doesn't rule out a bad battery, still kinda hoping I don't have to deal with Verizon and getting a replacement.
Talked to Verizon, they said "we checked, battery's fine." So... guess its not the battery? They said it "could take a month to normalize after the update."
I would buy a replacement battery and install it, see if that helps. They are cheap and it's good to have one anyway. The Ankers come in a 2-pack with a nice universal wall charger.
Verizon is not even bothering to check really, are they ? Did they even loan you a replacement to prove to you it's not a bad battery ? Doubt it. Do it yourself.
It really sounds like you are having excessive battery drain due to a wakelock problem like with Google's update service. Check around here for threads about how to diagnose and mitigate that.
Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk
I didn't expect Verizon to help, but they definitely impressed with just how little they offered. I'm spending today with Wi-Fi and 4G off, unless browsing, for which I turn the latter on. In my half hour lunch I've noticed much, much better battery usage. Thoughts?
Edit: change of location seems to drain it quicker (school vs McDonalds parking lot - former worse than the latter). Signal was three bars in each, though.
I've looked a bit ino wakelocks but will read up on it more tonight. Problem I've found is how many detectors require root access, and I'm not real interested in rooting.
I just got my G3 last night and rooted it and did a few things to minimize battery drain and today, after almost 12 hours of light to moderate use my battery is still sitting at 81%.
Pretty sure there's a memory leak on stock vs985 lollipop... Or at least from what I had read and experienced

Is Elephone even trying to do anything?

I mean.. there is some serious hardware inside, but software is literally an unlimited stream of crap. So many obvious and infuriating bugs and they don't even fix them. Is it even worth using this phone anymore?
I'd love to see an 8.1 update but I'm curious about what's biting your phone. I see nothing to complain about on the ones I and my son received last week. There's no new build on them but battery, wifi, video sync, call quality, even the camera focus problem most people reported don't seem to be an issue.
I was careful to remove the adups spyware on the first day, and added Greenify, noLED, Life360 and the latest action launcher. I also limited background apps to 3, and turned off as much location tracking stuff as possible in Google Maps without completely neutering it.
I get about 6 hours of SOT, and despite life360 the standby drain is negligible - if I set out to conserve battery I can get 2 days easy. The only downside I can find to this phone is that the decacore eats battery when playing Monument Valley 2.
But maybe it's just that my usage patterns are different. Can you describe some of the things that your phone does that bother you so I can try them on mine? And did you already get rid of the adups junk?

I have not removed the junk that a comes with the phone. Did you root to do this?
I am not having the issued described here in XDA as well.
I am getting roughly a day with my battery.
In my experience, it is the screen that is eating up my battery.
When Auto brightness is on, it gets too bright for me so I setup a custom auto brightness using tasker.
No need to root to remove spyware, just install ADB on your computer and then do per https://forum.xda-developers.com/elephone-s8/how-to/beware-com-adups-fota-myapplication-t3741622
