Petition: Z Ultra to be updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Hello everyone,
I made a petition about our favorite phone to get another update from Sony.
You can sign here

Phone/ROM-related petitions never work. Plus we won't have 100K people signing it - XDA isn't as big as you think, and people outside XDA just don't care or don't even know what's Marshmallow at all.

It never work or never tried.....i think xda is big enough...people will start knowing about marshmallow and regular people also like updates....maybe in a long run Sony will change its mind...who knows....it never hurt to try..does it .

I'm not saying that Sony won't change its mind under certain influences, just that the influence won't be a petition which can only gather merely thousands of votes in months.

Well, companies have their own practices and strategies....merely left behind certain product will sometimes benefits that company for a long time even some owner not happy about it....i think i understand some avid users will do this to get attention...but i also know why big company will not listen...maybe they care, maybe they don't but i think if you want to apply updated program or software to certain device is expensive....to want a profit, they need to do this i think...left the product that users a gradually left behind....

Why is having marshmallow important anyway? Nothing after android 4.3 really impressed me. Every new version is buggy and harder to root and the next version tries to only resolve those bugs and introduces other bugs. But I wish you well with your goal and I hope your petition works.

like I said before in another thread. I love my ultra and how it works on KitKat 4.4.4. the battery last longer and some apps work on KitKat that don't on lollipop. I've been on lollipop 5.0.2 rooted and on 5.1.1 rooted and I didn't like it and went back to KitKat 4.4.4. KitKat work very good with my ultra and i'll stay on it till it quits working or sell it. so I don't care for lollipop and marshmallow

I don´t think enough Ultras were sold to start a petition...

Not according to Sony themselves, but that could change. Don't expect it though.

I though GPE update are handled by google. If nexus 5 is getting Android M, no reason why others s800 phones can't.

Yup, and that's why we have no freakin' idea if it gets M. I sure hope it does, but it's impossible to tell. We'll notice in a week or two though. Cross your fingers!

go to sony official blog. the chance to be heard are bigger there. it's useless making a petition for this kind of issue.

I think, this is pure speculation, GPE has to be joint effort between Sony and Google.. Sony provide the bootloader and kernel and probably recovery too.
Google can then take a bootable platform and build Android on it.

I think another question should be whether xzu owners would be willing to pay, say, $10 for an upgrade. I would.

Sony released the 6.0 binaries earlier this week, which are proprietary Sony drivers which allows ROM developers to get AOSP running on our devices, so maybe they gave those to Google too, so they can port 6.0 to the GPe(?). I don't know. I'm not sure how the GPe program works at that level, so I guess all we can do at this point is to wait and see. (Give it 2-3 weeks)

So does anyone know if GPe version of Z Ultra is getting Marshmallow? I can't find info on this..If they get it, it can be ported to regular XZU as well, right?

Doesnt look like we will get latest android 4.3 for 2011 line up. The 2011 models are scratched by Sony. Only if few developers can port something for us.
If Xperia X8 got Jelly Bean running, I am sure some devs will port 4.3 onto our 2011 Xperias. Can't guarantee that it will work fast and be stable though.
1st of all, Android 4.3 is not even released yet. Even if it does get released, it will take maybe a few months before a developer actually succeeds at getting a working ROM.
Don't expect anything official from Sony.
sony are getting like Samsuck behavior-abandoned their old devices after making more new shining device..after all, xperia 2011 line are still in 'Ericsson'..hahah

This is a 2011 Xperia forum, so we are talking about 2011 Xperia devices, not 2015 ones.
Sent from LT18i with custom firmware by myself.
4.3 should work well on 2011, 4.2.2 (pac man) is not laggy on my xmp.
Since 4.3 is even lighter than 4.2, I'll say it will still work well, better I hope
4.3 will be probably come with less feature such as radio and camera in 4.2.2
4.2 is still not stable for our device, don't think 4.3 will be better despite being lightweight.

it think 4.2.2 is really stable only think may is battery drain if u heavy user...

As of i know.... There will be a release of android 4.3 a.k.a CM 10.2 for our devices too..... coz I just saw a few videos where android 4.3 was installed in Galaxy Gio and galaxy SII
So Fingers crossed for the CM 10.2 to release for our devices as soon as possible
Chances are good. In first screenshots I saw that Android 4.3 is using kernel 3.4, the same as Legacy Xperia which is based on 4.2.2.
There is a chance that we may get Official CM10.2. :fingers-crossed:
Till then Mike is providing support for most of 2011 Xperias (LegacyXperia) :good:
Let sony release the JB camera drivers first. Then i will worry about android 4.2.

no wonder sony is going down... can't the people at sony search a little and provide us a fortune... i wish sony ericsson was still present
The facts is,
When Sony Ericsson turned into Sony, they spent plenty of money in development & production of new devices to make a fame in market; but kept the hardware same/old for successive devices. Now condition is, they have way too many devices to maintain & money to spend on software development & software distribution for all the devices manufactured so far. It's not economical for them to do so now but as we customers have spent our money into their devices, it's our right to ask for software updates. So now they are giving reasons only to avoid old customers.
Now 'Xperienced' customers avoid Sony.

Confirmed, no kitkat

I guess that's why they gave them out. "Can you guys make ROMs for us? We're too lazy."

Huawei is basically saying "you're on your own" to anyone who received a device as a devloper. That's not a great position... It's a pretty solid slap in the face. My first thought as a developer is "ok, they are out, why would I bother". I'd cut more slack if the device was 18-24 months old but they are pushing this as their flagship currently and an alternative to the more expensive phablets on the market. Even Samsung provides "reasonable" support for "old" flagships better than this.
The crazy thing is the hardware should be more than able to keep up with 4.4/5.0. Unless they are jumping right to 5.0 this move makes 0 sense to me.
Modding. Mymind and xordos with my continual softbrick testing have managed to port a pretty much fully working TWRP onto my MT2-L05 device and I have uploaded a decrypted 4.4.2 rom for my Mate 2 in this forum, so why don't we collectively try and port it to your device, any help you need that are within my skillset I will happily provide....just a thought.. .... Download the rom I posted and see what you can come up with.. ..... .

Does Huawei use a tool like RSD or Odin for system images or are devs stuck with manual disk images and the like via recovery?
Hmm, I was thinking about getting one of these, now I'm having doubts. If we only
get third party firmware, would I still be able to run software which will not run with root access ?
Have any of those developers who received the free phones mentioned their intentions?

Right now I'd hold off. Buy something else. The operating system on this phone is already a year old. Support for things like Android wear etc will be questionable in 6 months.
If Huawei doesn't update it's phones you should go with something else. Just my opinion.

I saw the blog post on my G+ feed earlier today. I'm not really shocked, but it still really feels like a kick in the teeth.
I'm not sure what kind of luck we'll have getting a custom KK/LP Rom running on this phone. Usually the manufacturer-provided ROM is used as a baseline for other modifications to be made. If we were to spin our own AOSP Rom, could we even find the drivers and kennel modules to make everything work?
Where do we go from here?

The kernel is up on one of the hosted Huawei sites. A quick once over at the BABBQ indicated it's a fairly vanilla Qualcomm 3.4 kernel with some Huawei bits sprinkled in. Shouldn't be much of an issue for 4.4. getting a 3.10 kernel up for 5.0 will be trickier and is a big question mark as 5.0 isn't officially released just yet. At the BABBQ we also discovered they didn't implement all of the modem modes in the ROM. Another developer told me they might take a closer look but gave no detail for timing.
I've been tinkering with adb backups, titanium and xposed lately and I'm not liking the stock ROM much. They omitted large chunks of the adb backup stuff rendering apps like Helium useless, the SD cards don't come through to the root context properly forcing you to enable a compatibility flag in SuperSU in order to make titanium work and apktool and other standard tools choke nicely on the system apks. I had to fall back to running the smali decompiler by hand to find the right hooks in SystemUI for a simple xposed hack.
Adding to the fun their version of Settings.apk is missing a number of standard features which you can only adjust via Tasker/SecureSettings or by hand behind the scenes. They also didn't implement encrypted storage in the vold storage stuff so you're screwed in an enterprise setting.
Based on what I've seen thus far a source based build is almost necessary if you want everything android has to offer. However, vetting a ROM to ensure various new functionality is 100% will be a pain.
Huawei left out a lot and the lack of 4.4 is a serious kick in the teeth.
Horrible
I just purchased this phone from amazon on July. I wouldn't mind the no update but I want to get a google watch in the next few months so I'm not very happy about this announcement. For some odd reason, Amazon is still letting me return this phone so I'm thinking of returning the phone. What is another phone that I can get at this price range?

You can use Huawei's Hi-Suite software to flash roms to phone from pc. You can also pack roms up into Huawei's update format and flash them in quick update mode from your phone's external sd card, or you can install via recovery.
I bought mine on September 29 (didn't get it until early October) through the gethuawei site. I wonder if I can return it... I'll find out when there livechat is live today, the 29th of October.
After just one minor OTA update they officially announce no additional updates for their only US device... That's a deal breaker for me.
Damn, I was just about to buy this phone. Does anyone know of any good alternatives in Canada?

Not surprised , saw this coming from the early start . Thing is , there is no alternative with these features / size at the 299$ price tag . There are phones like the ZTE nubia / moto g / Blu products / etc but they don't hold a candle to this phablet . On another note , I've customized my phone to the max and i don't need a major OS update . Just me , this phone runs perfectly for my use . Fine if they just push minor OS fixes via OTA . Developers can be our saviours ! Let's not forget this isn't really a flagship ! You're paying for the experience as created/intended at the time . Let's wait and see

Agreed this 509 firmware is stagefright patched and was built like 5 weeks ago and its 5.0.2 I think this is all were getting and since the Z4v is no longer coming out I belive 5.0.2 is the end of the road for the Z3v. This 509 firmware is good though.
I can understand your frustration, but I wouldn't take it for 100% that Sony is intentionally excluding the Z3V... They will probably send the marshmallow firmware to Verizon, and because of that, we'll probably never receive it unless we get a lucky leak, but I doubt that because I don't think it'll even be a candidate for Internal Testing as I'm sure Verizon plans to push Lollipop, fulfill their year old promises, and be done with their EOL device.. so even if Sony does send them the firmware, Verizon is most likely going to sit on it until it's buried... But you have to think with articles like these, even if they are press statements from Sony, it's still likely that they could leave out the Z3V unintentionally because even though its a variant of the Z3, by saying the Z3 is getting the update, they could be collectively including the Z3V along with that... but either way, I agree that we'll most likely never get this update, and that sucks.... But I do think Verizon is going to give us the latest Lollipop for sure.... There's no reason not to jump it to 5.1.1 if Sony gave them the firmware, it's not a major update... I think they just wanted a solid Lollipop build in "testing" (an intentional leak out there to collect usage stats from people bold enough to flash it) with stagefright patches, etc to make sure they had a solid build before putting the finishing touches on the firmware. There is a different Kernel in the .509 version than the .485, as well as some other interesting differences that make me think they're gearing it for the latest Lolllipop... and really as long as we get that with working VOLTE.... I can be happy enough with that.

the thought did cross my mind that they would update 509 the rest of the way to 5.1.1 now that stagefright patch is out for z3 5.1.1 because it may be bad for business to have us on firmware we shouldn't have. http://phandroid.com/2015/10/07/sony-xperia-marshmallow-beta/ So the Z3 and Z3 compact are getting beta testing already.
Maybe leaked Marshmallow FTF for the Z3v soon.

Just though all the kids on here would like to know that there is a 6.0 release over the 5.1.1, after all numbers mean so much on this forum.
:good:
Didn't mean to kill the thunder of the leaked beta Lollipop.

I wasn't trying to be rude either I have had this phone for almost a year since it first came out and have received no support for this phone at all I have spent literally hundreds of hours trying to fix this phone myself because verzions incompetence I'm not sure for the reason for the leak or how it happened but I doubt very much we will receive 6.0 and I don't really give a **** I would just like them to realease a Lollipop version so I can have a feature I was promised a year ago -advanced calling. Also quick charge 2.0 is a listed feature- it's not. Verizon = Liars. Look at the Z4v that's a disaster to.

I am pretty tough skinned, it takes more than what you said to be considered "rude" to me.
I agree B.S. what VZW has done with the Advanced Calling 1.0, I am tired of getting the stepchild phones and VZW keeping us from getting the next OS release due to heavy-handed control. I mean Z3 getting a beta test for Marshmallow, seriously? Maybe the guy who got the leak can get Marshmallow leak, but I would like to have the latest OS if possible and I am sure others will agree.
An AOSP with a unlocked bootloader, I miss those days.
Is this bogus?
Hi I'm new to xda developers forum. Is this site BS that claims to offer a 6.0 rom for Z3v?
Since I'm new, I'm not allowed to share the link but it's from

If it was real we would have heard about it. If it is still wait until it shows up here on XDA.

It is fake
Man it was so great to have the Droid when it first came out. ROM competition was tremendous and you could lead anything you wanted; if you could dream it, someone was already working on it.
I have 4 of those beauts!

I have a similar experience. My last phone was a Galaxy Nexus, it was an embarrassment of riches as far as being able to modify it. Different ROMs everywhere you looked, modified kernels, etc... Thanks to baldwinguy77 I was running KitKat 3 days after Google introduced it, even before any manufacturers had released phones with it.
The Xperia's lack of popularity with the general public is probably the cause of it's noticeable lack of developer interest. Few devs have one so few work on it.
I really like the phone, it's battery life is second to none. I may have to be satisfied running Lollipop but at least it is rooted so there's that.

how's software support

How's software support from manufacturer? Will we be getting regular security patches OTA?
Will it be supported for at least 2 years?
Anybody owned an Oppo phone knows about their history with updates?
Also, is their OS smooth and battery efficient or just horrible?
Thanks for reading
I had the oppo find 7. The phone was very good in his time but the software was very buggy. Os updates were very bad and it tOok a very long time to see an update. At the end, oppo closed his website and community forums leaving europe. Fortunately, there was xda devs supporting the device like omnirom etc...
I like the oppo find x but i m very septical about the support and more about the camera mechanism durability. An other thing, viewing the camera mechanism, i douubt the phone have an ip certification.
Ps: i think oppo will leave the europe maket one more time because of their prices. They are not known in france for example and a basic configuration at 999€, peoples will prefer to buy an iphone or a samsung. Maybe a huawei or a xiaomi wich are more famous than oppo here.

I agree with you, you forgot The Lamborghini version At 1699 €. Huawei and recently Xiaomi are already well known and sold in France, paradoxically Oneplus too but not Oppo
I doubt Oppo will break into the European market. big company in Asia certainly but almost unknown in Europe and bad memories of their rotating camera on N1 and N3....
I'm from germany and i think nearly nobody here or in france/spain/italy/netherlands will ever buy this phone at a pricetag of 999€. Nobody knows Oppo so you can impress nobody with your "Noname Phone". If you want to spend that much money you simply buy an iPhone or a S9+.
The Huawei P20 Pro is only selling good at that high pricetag because of the telekom, o2 and vodafone with a contract. So you have to pay 1-300€ to get the device. An Oppo without contract is nearly impossible to sell.
Thanks guys for your replies.
ColorOS in Oppo Find 7 days were always a year behind. For instance, Android was at version 4.4 Kitkat and yet Find 7 was released with 4.3 Jelly Bean. It's true that Oppo had continued to support it for 3 years, but remember at that third year, Android was at 6.0.1 Marshmallow and yet Find 7's latest final release was Project Something OS which is 5.1 Lollipop.
For people that doesn't necessarily understand how to root, TWRP, or flash custom ROMs, something will go wrong during this process because none of those updates are OTA nor recommended by service centers.
Should something ever go wrong, Oppo official service centers will give you its original 4.3 Jellybean that does not even support unified partition of any kind.
Until this day, June 2018, people still asks me: "What kind a phone is that? The camera is amazing."
The camera is still amazing even for 2018. Unfortunately, Oppo is very bad at releasing software updates. For that department, Oneplus is the better sister company but its camera & audio is not as good as Oppo's.
I was told that if you want good audio, VIVO seems to be the better sister company but I haven't paid much attention to its camera & software update support. I hope this helps.
Anyone having an Oppo contact address? Marketing, developement section maybe. It looks like the support is bot driven. Asked them to forward my mail to the dev section, but well, lol.
To be honest Find 7 support was bad but also typical when considering it's contemporaries. At its introduction there was no monthly security update even for Nexus devices, it didn't exist. A whole bunch of OEMs were going to make you wait quite some time for updates and there would not be many. If they offer support similar to their contemporaries today as they did then it's going to be much better than it was for the Find 7.
Let's face it though; we're all going to have camera lift failure before the phone gets too antiquated.

Lol.
I got money to spare and i really need a new phone (current daily driver is OP2 with official LOS 15.1).
How will the chinese version fare in Sweden/EU? I don't think localization will be an issue after setting it up, just wondering if there will be issues with 3G/4G etc.
I was looking for freqs but didn't see anything, have I missed it? I'd beware the Chinese model, those can be trouble with the play store everywhere else. That is usually overcome by development but there isn't any way to know how much development this thing will see just yet. I'd certainly wait till I knew what it's play status was and the freqs... Haven't seen anything concrete on bootloader locks if any just yet either when I think about it. You're going to need that to get where you want to go.

Twitter is the best way
I have the Oppo Find 7; bought it in 2014. If I had to use one word to describe the official software support, its 'frustrating'. The software on the phone was always 2 versions behind the latest one every year. It was released with Jelly bean 4.3 and around that time 5.0 was just around the corner. It took them 2-2.5 years to release an Android 5.1 ROM. Every major update from Oppo required the users to factory reset the device and it was very difficult for a layman to perform these flashes every time a new ROM was released. All the official ROMs released were beta - Color OS 2.1 Beta, Spectrum 1.1 Beta etc. Usually you'll find tons of custom ROMs from third party developers from China devs but flashing them on the international version of the phone bricked the device. All of the oppo community was very active in reporting bugs and flashing ROMs, but the official supporters soon closed the community website and all other oppo forums as they couldn't keep up with the updates and bug fixes. Officially the Find 7 got 7 ColorOS ROMS (2.0.0, 2.0.4, 2.0.5, 2.0.7, 2.0.8, 2.1.0, 2.1.5 from 4.4 to 5.1) and all were Beta releases. All of them had at least one or more major bugs. ColorOS isn't user friendly and takes a lot of time to get used to, its a very bad attempt to copy iOS on iPhones. The only good part of the OS might be the camera.
I went to omni and never looked back; had no problems at all. You do bring up a good point though; a person should be prepared and willing to stay on the release software for some time. I myself will want to know who is going to be developing, or if there will be any at all. I'm fine with Oreo but I'm going to need an unlocked bootloader/magisk. As to their launcher, yeah, it's junk. Easily fixed at the play store however; I know I'll have my beloved Action Launcher on there in about 5 minutes. Assuming I buy of course, a lot of questions to be answered first.

completly agreed
So basically unless we get custom roms for this phone - stay away.
I wouldn't go that far, if the bootloader is unlocked and you're good hanging on the delivered firmware it might still be a go. I would be as long as it's possible to enable double tap to wake, I hate having to swipe. The software itself was not that bad with the find 7, it was the craptacular launcher that hurt the stock experience.
All that said if a good developer picks one up and starts development that would make a buy decision easier to make.

I've had a few Oppo phones, and like others have said here, the biggest problem is software update speed. Their issue is that they use ColorOS, which is a heavy skin on the phone. They tapered it back some recently, but it still ends up making them delay updates because they have to do so much on their end.
The phones are always solid, high-quality phones. They just care too much about how the phone looks, rather than how current it is.
I have a NEX from China, and it was pretty simple to add Google services working flawlessly.
I assume same will be for FIND X which i have pre-ordered already should get it by 18th July.

SS Galaxy View2. Still in production? Anroid 9.0 or 10.0 rom?

1) I noticed the Samsung Galaxy View 2 still appears to be active on the Samsung and AT&T Websites, but is currently out of stock globally and has been for a few months.
Does anyone know if this product is still in production?
-------------------
2) If it is still in production, and becomes available again, I do recommend this product for anyone looking for the largest available tablet.
Despite its shortcomings (only 1080p ips, mediocre processor and ram) it remains the largest tablet on the market, and I love mine.
-------------------
3) @deadman96385 I know you probably never want to look at Samsung View roms again after that last project, but if production continues on the View2, you may want to buy one :good: and then consider developing an Android 9.0 or 10.0 port (Currently on oreo 8.1).
I doubt it would be a pain like the original View rom. The awful proprietary charger from the View is replaced by standard Samsung usb C port at the very least.
This looks like yet again the only tablet on the market of this size. And it is, at the very least, popular enough to sell out.
The Oreo 8.1 is still supported by the vast majority of apps that don't require deep learning, and still holds 12% market share >>> but with google pushing 9.0 dev I think a 9.0 rom would vastly extend life of this tablet.
Thoughts?
Be well!
Oh are ATT bootloader still locked?
Oh wait are ATT bootloaders still locked with no way around? I thought Samsung devices were unlockable regardless.
If locked then I guess that makes my post irrelevant. Can someone confirm for me?

RIP. Understood. Thank you.
Then I will ask one last related question since you are qualified to answer:
How long do you see 8.1 Oreo remaining usable with the majority of app? From what I can tell from the dev release, 9.0 was made so that most apps developed for 9.0 API 28 can easily be backwards compatible with previous api. Is this true? Should I be confident apps will continue to run on oreo for some time to come?
This question should help anyone who stumbles across this thread decide whether or not to buy a used (or new if they ever resupply) Galaxy View2. Because I think if Samsung was going to update it to pi themselves they would have already.
BTW - on sale at best buy right now for $399.

I just grabbed one, to use for a project, but I admit that it's kinda brutal that it might be stuck at 8.0 forever. you cant even install Signal on it.
Hopefully a way around this appears to update it to 10.0 into the modern era. Must be why best buy dumped it -- recession plus shipped with end-of-life software

a lot of apps dont run on galaxy view 2. mail and youtube and maps will probably always run but lots of niche stuff doesnt run.
Hopefully someone figures out how to get this device from 8.0 to 10.0
Got my View 2 a few days ago and I'm loving it so far!
It would be such a game changer if someone could (somehow) get v10 running on the device.
Right now I can't get AT&T messaging working - I want to receive my text messages from my phone on the tablet - whenever I try to sign in to AT&T messaging I am immediately taken back to the AT&T Messaging login page. I've contacted AT&T support and they said they have created a ticket for support to resolve but not a lot of hope there... At least NumberSync is working.
From the sound of it, it seems it's very unlikely we'll ever see an OS upgrade which is sad but I'm enjoying device as of now!
i heard that samsung might change their mind and provide an update for it! but it might be thru at&t only
