ZRAM enabling issue - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello !
I installed few days ago a custom kernel (which is called White kernel) on my Galaxy Young (with a 2.3.6 stock ROM) as it supports ZRAM, but I had a little problem. I tried to use an init.d script to enable it but it doesn't work : It shows "invalid argument" in the log file, but it does when I put manually the commands in Terminal Emulator. How to fix it please ?
Thanks in advance guys.

Well, the developer and Galaxy's subforum are no longer active (because only few users use this kernel).

What do you mean? Do you mean you want a kernel to base a rom on? If so, then yes you can use those kernels, but just make sure the kernel is for a rom specifically for the device the kernel is for.
thanks
I search a kernel for my defy but the bootloader is not deblocked. So I can't find a kernel, can I ?
I would like port for example a rom from an LG for my defy ?
Thanks in advance

Your device needs to be rooted to flash a new kernel/rom. Is your device rooted?
yes it is rooted
according to this post,
"Porting an other device's rom
Well, that part is easy
- extract the system.img
- extract boot.img
- replace boot.img-kernel with the one from your stock Hero rom one.
- rebuild boot.img
- build update.zip package (look someone's hero custom rom to see how to do it)
- sign and flash
It should run place and make calls but probably won't have Wifi, BT, trackball support."
It is reallly easy ?
Thanks
For Kernel Manager (the first link in post #2), you also need to have busybox installed.

It depends on how much experience you have in these things. To me it looks pretty easy but you may find it more difficult. I don't know if you have experience in this so I cannot say if it is really that easy for you.
(Yay! My 500th post)
last question:
How know if the kernel is good? because there are many kernel !
Or Can I extract from my phone ?

Read what they say. Like if you want to make your device faster, then get an overclockable kernel. If you want to conserve battery life, then get one that says undervolt. If you want more freedom, then get on with many options. (It's all based on your preference). Me, I would choose one with the most freedom so that I can change setting (cpu speed, etc.) whenever I want. Also look for the latest version (if you want to have the most recently updated one). If you still can't make up your mind, then choose based on user reviews.
thanks
so all are compatibles ok ?
and how extract the kernel ?
promised after I stop
you can just flash them using an recovery menu, or use an app for this.
I dont know if rom manager could do the job, try it
thanks for all your answers

All kernels you see in the app should be compatible since they are supposed to be device specific but still check to see if it says the name of your device beside the kernel.
after have ported my rom on the defy, it reboot on bootloader with errors

Can you post some screenshots? Also, it may have been caused by the rom not being full compatible. It may have too many bugs to operate.

Likely to be a bad flash. Just reflash the kernel. If this doesn't fix your problem, then reflash your rom.

I can't send sms with stock rom and also teamleader 1.3 rom (Chinese), If this kernel can fix or not, thanks !
u can send sms with teamleader 1.3 but only with 3rd party app like go sms pro or handcent... about this kernel , as stated , no is a std kernel with root and custom recovery only...no tweaks or any others atm..

---------
OK, forget what I said. I ended up flashing this Kernel into my e120s. So far I do not see any difference. I'll use it for a couple of days to see if battery life improves.
Thanks for the post. Followed your instructions and made it very easy. Though you've missed one step where you have to manually place the .zip file into 'Tegrak' folder after odin. No big deal.
Thanks!
I think it just gives you custom recovery, with backup/restore options

SKT FB08 recovery and kernel
Thank you very much prodigiez. This is very encouraging to see work being done on this excellent and soon to be very popular device. I followed your great directions and succeeded to root the device.
To inform others attempting this procedure, I had trouble entering both the Download mode and the Recovery Modes... The button sequences seem to have changed or it's my mistake. I used
Code:
adb reboot download
to get into Download mode,
and
Code:
adb reboot recovery
I am grateful to pyrator for this ...

wifi error
I think i flashed that
could you help me to find the file?

Hi there,
I've got the same problem but with another ROM.
I have Wolfs TW Gingerbread and X10_2.3.3_DooMKernel-v06-FS-BootManager-v2.0.ftf with x10_gb_DooMKernel-v06-FS_wifi modules but there's still a wifi error...
The wifi module has to be flashed in xrecovery over the install custom zip option, right?
Edit1: Urgh, i see, i flashed wrong kernel version...had v05a instead of v06... :S
Edit2: So, now i flashed the things i wrote above, and i have still the error...i'm going mad xd
Edit3: Call me dumb or whatever, i finally figured out i had to reinstall the ROM after installing Kernel when the ROM was already booted once ;D

Read DoomKernel thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1253853
Dudes, fear not you're not going mad re: DoomKernel v6 WiFi modules.
I'm NOT clear on the specifics(long time ago) but at least I can direct a different line of questions.
The WiFi and or any *.ko in /system/lib/modules/*.ko is wiped on boot by /etc/init.d/00modules.
00modules is a text file and can be viewed (I wouldn't edit it)
You'll see the script clears all *.ko and then replaces them with those found in /system/kernel/${KVER}/*.ko
It uses busybox to do this.
I guess the logic behind it is, that different kernels when booted will use different *.ko.
So.... what I did was extract the wifi.ko and other *.ko files out of the .zip and then place them in /system/kernel/${KVER}/ where ${KVER} is you kernel version
If there is already *.ko file in system/kernel/${KVER}/*.ko I'd back them up before I overwrote them with new ones.
The new *.ko in /system/kernel/${KVER}/*.ko need the following permission rw-r--r--
This worked for me (almost years ago) when I was having problems.
NOW, I'm not saying this is the answer, but this may be an area to explore if WiFi reverts to an "failing" version each time you boot no matter if you install the new modules in /system/lib/modules or not.
Hope this helps...

[Q] About Tun.ko for Custom Rom

Sorry for this noob Q' but is there a pre installed tun.ko file on every custom roms here (Viking Rom v7.2 in particular)?
tried searching the system using root explorer but i cant seem to find it, tried installing tun.ko installer from apps store but it wont install.
thanks in advance. . .
Assuming Samsung didn't change anything from update4->5 (unlikely since the update5-based kernel I'm running still has it enabled), you don't need a tun.ko module because the support is built into the kernel by default: https://github.com/sgs3/GT-I9300_Kernel/blob/master/arch/arm/configs/m0_00_defconfig#L1318
