Glass screen protector anyone? - Droid Turbo 2 Accessories

I don't have a DT2 yet but may purchase one by the end of the week. The outer screen is plastic and I read a post where people saw some Turbo 2's on display at Verizon with scratches on the screens. I also read that they will have the replacement external screens for sale for $30. I would like to put on a glass screen to protect it. I have one on my GS4 and it is great. You can't really tell a screen is on it. But since the Turbo 2 already has 4 screens I wonder if an additional screen would cause an issue with the display's brightness and resolution. Anyone put on a screen protector yet?

I had the store apply the flexible glass protector from Verizon. Realizing that you can replace the outer plastic lens (screen protector), you may not want to do that. However, the outer lens gets micro scratches too easily for my liking. So, I have a glass protector on top of it. A bit of a belt and suspenders situation, I'll admit. From my experience, there is no issue with display brightness from having yet another glass protector on it.

What I have been wondering is: Instead of putting a screen protector on top of the outer lens, would it be possible/better to remove the outer lens , and replace it with a tempered glass screen protector? That way you get rid of that lousy Verizon logo and get a glass look & feel. Thoughts?

I've thought about that but the glass protectors I've seen so far are not a perfect fit. The only perfect fit that I've found is the oem from Verizon. But its still early.

Motorola has stated this is a bad idea on the customer forums. The adhesive they use with the outer plastic lens is different. You'll need an outer lens, and glass on top, if you want glass. Otherwise you void the warranty. The Verizon glass protector is well made and I see no reason to chance it. I had a fresh outer plastic lens and put the glass on before using the phone once. The screen is pristine. The check mark is no reason to void the 4 year screen warranty.

Can you post a pic of what your VZ glass protector looks like?
We can easily get rid of the "check mark" once the force is released and they Moto is selling plastic lens replacements for it.

Honestly, there isn't anything to see. It's a near perfect fit.

Thanks for the input Dave, I'm browsing the Moto forums now and see that post. Where did you see the info about the adhesive being different? Moto definitely says that "using your Turbo II without the official Shattershield lens voids your warranty", which obviously makes sense. I would never use it without any outer lens; my thought was that if the OEM outer lens is replaceable, then I could technically replace it with anything, right? If something happened that I needed warranty on, I could at the very least take off my third party glass protector (I'm a fan of Skinomi products) and put a Shattershield outer lens back on? The checkmark does suck, but it's not a huge deal for me to begin with. People seem to be having success with putting a screen protector on top without compromising screen quality, so I guess it's not as big a deal as I thought.
Also, what the hell is "flexible" glass? Seems like an oxymoron. If flexible, unbreakable glass was a thing, wouldn't everyone be using it??? I wonder why they didn't make the outer lens glass if it's something that's user-replaceable.

I was more referring to the thickness of it... I have only seen those glass privacy screens and usually they add considerable thickness to the front of the device.
You are saying this lays flat on it, just like a plastic one normally does on a glass screen?

I'm absolutely getting VZW's tempered glass protector. In the past, I've been adamantly against them since Gorilla Glass makes having one redundant, but since the top Shattershield lens is plastic, it is necessary. You can buy the Shatterproof lens from Moto (sans Verizon logo) for $30 every few months, or buy the glass protector for $25 now and be done with it.

Did any of you apply the protector yourself? or did you have the store do it?
Is the glass protector able to be reapplied? Might wait until I get rid of that VZW check then get the glass protector.

I'm also wondering if one can just use DT2 without top layer. There are many reports of outer layer easily scratchng, even for me after 2 days i have a faint scratch. Without the layer screen will likely look a tad crsiper and i wonder if anyone has used it w/o the layer and seen how strong the 4th layer is.

I think this would be a HUGE mistake. Put either a sacrificial moto outer lens on solo, or with a glass protector. But to leave the interior lens unprotected seems like an invitation for a permanently scratched screen.

I ended up getting one from Amazon. It's a $7 one that is Tempered glass. It's on the screen now & it's wonderful, very hard, hides finger prints etc. It's the 1st tempered glass protector I've used. The bad news is that I got an email a few days before it arrived saying that they just found out that the screen has a very slight curve to it so the bottom of the protector tends to peel up.....which it does indeed do. I'm leaving it on until I find a suitable replacement for it. In the same email they asked me if I'd like to receive some basic plastix screen protectors as an apology free of charge. Haven't received them yet. Might be worth looking into the Verizon one. I've never bought a single Verizon accessory before as they are rediculously expensive.

The one that I bought was by Supershieldz. Just checked & it looks like they already have a new version to replace the original one that I bought.

Nothing like having to use a condom to protect another one. But I agree replacing a glass screen protector is preferable to paying more to replace a plastic one.

So is anyone doing it raw? IE no top layer.

Well even though the shattershield screen is shatter proof it isn't scratch proof. So a screen protector is needed. You can't have everything.

I wouldn't recommend going balls out. The second screen is plastic too and not replaceable. You need some kind of top layer protection whether it be theirs or third party.

I just got this for my phone. If you do apply it yourself pay attention to the edges and corners, especially the top right corner where the "Front" sticker is. The sticker was covering a big bubble that I did not notice until 5 minutes after the apply. Putting pressure on it for a few minutes fixed it.

[Q] Fusso oleophobic coating and Z Ultra

The oleophobic coating on my phone started to wear off and an ugly stain is left at the bottom corner of the front panel. I came across this fusso product and wondering if it possibly can cover and hide the part with no coating on the screen? Also I am not sure if at all it can be applied directly on the ASF or it is meant for glass surfaces only?
Maybe you can advise me with any solutions?
By the way my phone is only like 10 days old and I baby it.. it's just ridiculous.

yes I can help
you got 2 solutions.
-Take it off original screen protector. (I know it's a pain for you but it is a choice)
-Buy another screen protector and put it on top. Stain WILL disappear.
My recommendation for you is GearMaxx (front and back). That is a top of the line product.
I have removed the original screen protector (which is a pain). Tomorrow I will receive my Glass-M screen protector and try it out. It's supposed to have very good fingerprint protection. A bit more expensive but seems like a good product.
Though I am also gonna order a bottle or two of the Fisso product you mentioned. Funny you mentioned it because I first saw it just a few minutes ago on another site. Also got good reviews I've seen. Albeit a tad expensive.

Oh removing the back protector on my old Z was a nightmare I don't want to go through that hell again ever. Putting a second protector on top looks like is the only opt to me for now as the Fusso coating is meant for glass surfaces only, maybe it will harm the protector or won't work properly idk.

I think it only works properly on naked glass so the protector has to be removed. Though indeed it was a pain and took me about an hour with acetone and knife. Though I miss the oleophobic coating a lot.

Who needs a screen protector? Make stock glass oleophobic

I took off my stock screen protector a while ago and installed a tempered glass screen protector since the stock glass has no oleophobic coating and feels a little sticky. Well my screen protector chipped so I removed it and applied a coat of rain x. It feels great! Still slightly more sticky than gorilla glass but much better than the stock glass. I applied some to the back glass too just for protection under my case. The glass is more shiny and attracts fingerprints less. Any fingerprints are wiped off easier. I highly recommend using rain x instead of a screen protector after removing the stock layer. Now I'm pissed that I spent so much on those stupid screen protectors that are hard to apply perfectly and chip/crack after a few months.
..exactly what tempered screen protector did you buy? You have a link?
Great idea!!
Might use this on my new mobile phone, as I am looking to upgrade to this model.

I started with the one everyone on here recommends, m-glass. I got some crap under the front glass so I ordered the explosion proof front protector off amazon. The front protector chipped near the microphone after a few months and when I removed my case I noticed the m-glass back had cracked. The glass protectors feel nice but are too expensive and not durable imo.

Not sure if you want to be in regular contact with those chemicals: http://goo.gl/yLmN1d
Known eye irritant.
May want to consider something less toxic like http://goo.gl/le5xtW if you want to go down this road.
So, I did this. Looks like a lot of forums have threads about Rain-X yielding positive results.
I also found this post and followed one of the comments.
Not sure if its available everywhere, but for glass coating I use Gtechniq G5. It lasts way longer than Rain X.
Applying is the same for both, tho.. The trick is to clean the screen as good as possible, and use something alcohol-based to make the surface free of residue from the cleaners. Put some G5/Rain X on a cotton patch and apply it in a THIN layer on the glass in "up and down" movements (not circular). Let it sit for a while (2-5min), then apply a new layer the same way on top of the previous layer and let that sit for a while again. Use a clean hot water-moist microfiber cloth to buff it off, and a dry one after.
Let the glass cure for a couple of hours (NO TOUCHING), and your good to go. The G5 coating should last for at least 6 month, and your glass screen should be resistant to dust and fluids. MUCH easier to clean too!

Screen protector that covers the whole display?

I bought some screen protectors off eBay and they leave about 2mm of space on both sides of the display.
I'm fine with the screen protector not covering the entire front panel but it should at least cover up the display. Whoever designed this film must be out of their mind.
Anyone know of an eBay seller that has a screen protector that actually covers the entire display?
EDIT: I know there are threads about this but they're all about the glass protectors. I'm looking for the film protectors.

Its seems to be the one thing thats hardest to get, I thought the S7 Edge would be the one that would be difficult to get screen protection for given the nature of the screen. I dont know whether its the 2.5D glass on the S7, but any review for screen protectors seem to be bad as there are gaps down the sides. I usually get a glass protector straight away but holding off for now until I decide whether I'm going to bother or not. I had considered one of the film covers but might just go for one of the full screen glass ones like the one below, although I really dont want to take away from the looks of the device.

I bought a tempered glass screen protector off eBay that covers the entire edge but leaving a tiny bit of room for a case to go on without lifting the protector. But the downside is you can see the dot matrix in the sun which isn't a major problem for me. I would rather see a good protector that i paid $10 that had dot matrix then see scratches form over time.

Is it the digitizer that you can see when looking at it with bright sunlight?
No. Since the whole protector isn't sticky like the plastic ones usually are. Only the touch screen part of the protector have these little dots that you will see in bright lighting which is to make touch feel normal. Can be quite annoying sometimes but i get over it. Worth the protection to me

I think you meant it doesn't cover the entire front panel which I'm fine with.

should i remove the screen protector?

I find that the (plastic) screen guard that's provided with this phone is a major smudge magnet. I'm thinking of removing it. I'd like any feedback from anyone who has already taken it off.
Cheers.

There doesn't seem to be an oleophobic coating on the display because they expect you to keep the screen protector on. So taking it off might result in even more smudges. Personally, I didn't find the screen protector that came pre-installed to be a smudge magnet. I actually found that it reduced them. I'm not saying the protector necessarily has an oleophobic coating, but that I didn't have a problem with smudges on it. The only reason why I took mine off was because there was some black dust underneath the screen protector and I couldn't get it back on without more dust appearing under it. So I just removed it completely. You might have to buy another screen protector of your choice that will better repel smudges to your satisfaction.
I've taken mine off because I scratched mine with a paper towel (like wtf?) but now I wish I haven't, because things stick to the screen easier. So unless you have an alternate screen protector ready, I'd recommend not.

Thanks. This is information I didn't have. I have a couple of other devices with no plastic cover; I don't have the smudge issue with them. But if there's no coating on the h5, then it's probably best to keep it on.

Plastic is not the same feel as glass on the fingers (don't know how to explain it better in english), and it scratch must faster.

Bought a generic 9H on eBay for 1€
I also have a transparent silicone case for the same price
I also bought the Nillkin 9H, but the other is still good so....
I took my plastic screen protector off the moment I got my tempered glass screen protector. Couldn't really remember how the original one felt since I only had for a very short period of time. That said, I recommend taking screen protector off for something better.
The stock screen protector is trash, all it does is act as a fingerprint magnet.
I did go to a Nillkin 9H. Wow - 90% reduction in smudges, and it is more sensitive than the stock plastic. Dropped the phone a few times, no issues. I do have an iPacky thin case, and it shows the abuse of daily use, but survives fine. It is also very thin. The thick cases defeat the whole purpose of our slim beauty.
I found that replacing the factory plastic screen protector with a high quality glass screen protector makes it a little better in terms of less fingerprint smudges and protection.

I have literally never used any screen protector and have never had issues. However, YMMV. I immediately took off the screen protector that came with it. I did buy a nice cheap protective case from Amazon prime. It has enough lip to protect the screen and I always make sure not to put my phone in the same pocket as my keys or sharp items.

Great.
I removed mine last night, can't believe how much better the display looks without it.

Screen's Lack Of Scratch Protection

I don't know about you guys, but I have to say this is the easiest screen to scratch of the g series phone since at least the g2. Has anyone else noticed this? I have a bunch of small scratches on the edges on the screen on the left and right that are small but noticeable.
Just check cos mine came with a screen protector on so if yours is the same then it's just that getting scratched.

I got mine and ripped the transportation foil of and installed the spigen Steinheil Screen protector. And stuffed it in a rugged armor case. I want my phone to be safe

Under the foil there is a factory fitted screen protector, on mine at least.

Same here, mine came with a screen protector already installed... I ordered mine online so the same day I pretty much ordered an Urban Armor Gear case, so I had that pretty much a day before the phone arrived from Koodo.
The only thing I've managed to scratch is the glass by the LED Flash on the camera, light scratches that may or may not come off with a buffing. I keep on touching the camera instead of the fingerprint sensor, if I grab the phone the wrong way... so I clean it with my shirt or hoody so that's probably where the scratches are coming from.

As others have pointed out, you must have left the plastic coating on the screen. Gorilla Glass 3 is not easy to scratch.
Not to be fasicious here but I would know if the screen protector was on the phone due to the sheen and raised edges. Definitely not that. The screen itself is fine, it's just the small bezel spaces around the screen that scratch easy

LOL, I hear you OP. I don't know how anyone could have a screen protector on their phone and not know. I don't use screen protectors because to me they always look terrible and are uglier then a few tiny scratches that I can barely see (which on my last 2 phones that are always in my pocket I have had 0 scratches). I just inspected my G6 and I don't see any scratches on the front. I think the whole front is covered by GG 3 which is strong against scratches.

Generally I agree, but the tempered glass protector is nearly impossible to notice. Clear, good coverage, and feels like original glass. Not like the plastic protector at all. I'm pretty rough on my phones and would really like to keep the phone in its naked form, but I don't want to risk it.

I have got plastic factory protection screen on that has barely any scratches.
Using the factory plastic screen for 2 weeks and surprised at how well its holding up to be honest
There TGSP are really nice. Just like using the original screen. Inexpensive too

Also, My G6 only came with what appear to be factory protection plastic, at least that is what it seems like to mesince it has a little white tab to remove it with and the phone did not come in a plastic sleeve, which is common these days.
On my V20 I left the factory protector on and it held up well
I received mine with a glass screen protector pre-applied which is nice to have. I have the 64GB/Korean version (LG-H870DS)

I know it's been awhile since you posted this message but I would like to know if you still have your phone. if you do I'm having the same problem right now I have a lot of tiny scratches on the edges of the front screen, the screen itself is not scratched deeply or noticeable at all when you turn on the display you can only see it on the edges when the screen is off and I have checked and I can't see any screen protection pre-installed on the display as some people have said. has anyone figured out why does the front screen scratches so easily my phone is the Korean version H870DS, it came sealed and i peeled the plastic protection as soon as I unboxed it ( phone is 2 weeks old) and has lot of scratches on the front and none on the back or Lensens
I had a Xperia Z5 previously for a year which i used with no case and no screen protector, barely got a scratch and i definitely treated it worse than my new G6

I received the exact same version of the phone from amazon about 2 weeks ago and I've got a lot of scratches on the front screen, how did you figure out yours came with a tempered glass pre-installed? I've checked on mine and I cannot see Any Factory screen protection, however the box came sealed and only had a plastic cover that obviously was only meant for shipping

Mine fell off from the 4th floor (to the pavement) and not even a single scratch.
I was holding my nexus 6p in one hand and the G6 in the other. I accidentally dropped the nexus (the metal back) onto the G6's screen, then it slid off onto the couch. Just from this, there are lots of tiny scratches on my G6.
